While La Verne Lutheran plays for another title, time to weigh in on postseason awards

With six area teams in the basketball semifinals, I was hoping we would do better than just La Verne Lutheran playing in Thursday’s Division 5AA championship against Windward at 8:15 p.m., at Colony High School. BTW, CIF doesn’t do us any favors by having 8:15 championship games, the deadlines for newspapers make it almost impossible to get game stories in the next day. We will have a short story, but forget about quotes from coaches or end of game photo’s with reaction from the winners, the late start make it almost impossible. By the way, CIF-SS spokesperson Thom Simmons weighed in on this by saying, “More important to us than meeting your (newspapers) deadline is providing a first-class venue for the kids,” Simmons said. “The way to do that is using the start times that we do.” Maybe he’s right, Simmons said kids and schools are more concerned with what time they’re playing than being featured in the newspaper the next day. Personally, I think players and fans care about both, but after the games end, CIF could care less what happens in regards to coverage. In any case, state playoffs playoffs begin next week, but we won’t know for certain until Sunday who are involved. So, start nominating boys and girls player of the year, coaches of the year and first team. Also, we hope to have dates for the Tribune/Star-News all-star game at Azusa Pacific soon.

  • Just sayin

I don’t think anyone can argue with SGV Pride’s list. Especially with coach of the year. Baldwin Park had a dream year I think coach had those boys playing at a higher level than anyone thought they could. Only thing I would ssy is that Miles has to be the MVP. His numbers were crazy and had he had a 3rd option on offence he could have lead the Lobos a bit farther than he did. The guy put up 41 against a ND team that knew that Miles was the Lobos only option on that night, The kid can flat out play. Amat was the one team I didnt get to see this season so I really dont know much about them, But the rest of the list I think is right on.

  • MY MVPs

If Most Valuable Player means the player who had the most “Value” for their team it’s hard to argue three players at the top of that list. In no particular order:

Chris Reyes Soph. Damien . Prior to Chris Reyes attending Damien Dunn had trouble getting out of the first round with teams that were far more talented than the one that just lost to Eisenhower for the second time in the Semis this year. Chris has lived in the shadows of Dunn’s guard happy offenses but make no mistake Reyes is the difference between losing in the first round and going to State.

Cooper, Junior LVL. This player gets kicked to the curb because of some jaded view that LVL shouldn’t have a seat at the party but few PG are as skilled with the ball and in running a team as he is. He has an uncanny ability to finish around the basket that really separates him from any guard not named Miles-Serrano. This year he’ll lead his team to a third straight CIF Championship Game and he’s been doing it as a three year starter who averages mad minutes and does it against stiff non league competition. A real talent who, for these parts, keeps getting better every season which is a rarity.

Miles-Serrano what can you say about a beautiful player like Bobby. His games speaks for itself and anyone who sees him play will say simply, “His game is nicccccce!” Handled playing with CJ Guerrero with class and character, handled playing without CJ with astonishing grace and commintment when most heralded players would have bolted or pouted, Bobby elevated, not only his game, but those around him. Equally adept at both ends of the floor he was able to control the game and let the game come to him in ways few could have.

Each player mentioned controlled the game at both ends, scored, defended and lead by example giving their contributions maximum value. I also considered Miller and Northrup from Bonita who were amazing all year and actually beat Damien, And Admas from Damien who was a shooting machine. Didn’t see Baldwin Park or South Hills this year but did see CO, Northview, Nogales, San Dimas with Bartolo , and a few others and feel comfortable with these three, maybe others could give their perspectives on MVP candidates without bagging on others.

Did Simmons really have the nerve to call Colony HIGH SCHOOL a “first-class venue”?

and “sgvpride” D-Hud is not even on the short list.

coach of the year has to be Coach Hart from BP his kids played hard won numerous games against teams that were way more talented…

Now comes the hard part who is player of the year??? Its pretty much a wide open conversation. I do know that at least kid should be named from LVL, AMAT, and DAMIEN.. Im glad I dont have to determine this.. Im going to name who I think should be ALL SGV 1st team…

Chris Adams SR. Damien- He averaged 18pts and makes big shot after big shot..only negative is 6’3 and only avgs 4reb..

    C. Coopers Jr. LVL- Averages 17pts and 6asst very mature an is leading LVL to its 3rd straight DIV. 5 final.. negative is only scored 2pts and was blown out vs Price.. Also plays in very sub-par league.

Daniel Rodriguez Jr. Amat- Averages 14pts 10reb 5asst 3 stls the JR. lead Amat in every category. Had huge game in semis vs Price. Plays in very tough Del Rey League where he average double-double..negative cant shoot free throws

Bobby Miles Sr. Workman- 26pts 13reb was everything to Workman without him team might have won 8 games maybe.. negative played against nobody..That league is as week as it comes..But have to give the kid credit he stayed instead of leaving like is buddy C.J.

C.J. Miller Sr. Bonita- 13pts 9reb big man in the middle. Was he main reason they almost won the Covina torny. No coincidence Bonita lost playoff game after kid went out with broken nose. negative should be leading scorer on his team. tens to get lost somtimes.

C Smith Sr. Glendora- 20pts 6reb kid can flat out play. Was hurt with back problems part of the season. negative has bad attitude at times, can it be coincidence that this was Glendora worst season in years???

Also for cosideration J.P.Rodriguez SH( best shooter in the valley ) C Reyes Dam ( soph is a beast but still a soft at times ) C Barbato Dimas ( can light it up but team was blownout by big boys of the valley )T. Goldston Amat ( 6’3 shooter was amzing from downtown but soft in the inside only avg 3reb 2ass )……..

just the facts: Cj Cooper he is the engine for the Trojans but it is hard to ignore Grant Jerrett 6ft.8+ center season,18.9ppg,10.5rpg,80%ft.had a break out game against Bishop Gorman 31pts,/29rebs, per ESPN recruits has a 94% grade and also is being heavely recruited by several Pac Ten teams including UCLA ,but again he is only a sophmore his time will come, all the above players are good choices.

  • lugo

My kid plays at Western Christian and Ive seen most of the kids in the area as we play in the same tornys they do. Im going to be as fair as possible and try to give you an honest answer to the top players in the SGV.
    1. C SMITH Glendora just an awesome outside inside player carried Glendora all year long. To bad he was hurt most of the year. He is by far the best player on this list.
    2. C REYES Damien dominated the paint all year. Has about 3-4 inches on every other big man but thats not his fault.
    3. C ADAMS DAMIEN Can shoot can shoot and can shoot..Big time money player to bad IKE is in the way every year.
    4. D RODRIGUEZ BISHOP AMAT Lead Bishop in everything pts reb ass. Coach on the team told me hes our MVP. I was at the Price game almost lead his team to the upset of the year
    5. C MILLER BONITA Saw this big at the Covina torny pretty much carried his team to the championship over C.H.

Most of these players I seen at the West Co and Covina tornys. There also those players like Miles and Cooper who I didnt get the chance to see. How can anyone argue with Miles I know he didnt play the best but numbers dont lie. And Cooper hes averaging 17pts and 6 dimes his team is the only valley team left in CIFs

  • Man Up

In my eyes until these other teams man up and play LVL then you have to give the edge to the LVL players, they are in the finals. All these other schools recruit and we have no problem with it why is it so wrong when LVL does it. You have the valley’s biggest recuriter over at Damien.

Just as I posted in a past thread, about Grant J. – CJ Cooper’s stats are also NOT padded by the league in which CIF forces LVL to compete.

Entire season 15.5 points per game Non-conference 17.1 PPG including a 29 point effort against Oceanview. Assists are down slightly 6 whole season 5 in non league game. Obviously those two numbers more than offset.

As with Grant, CJ numbers are actually lower because of the league in which they play and he regularly left the game early or the coach slowed down the pace.

TO not have these two in the top players of this area would be an absolute joke!

  • COChargerfan

CO’s Evan Barr should get consideration for first team. On the defensive side he is a beast…if you have any doubts ask the local kids that went up against him. Centennial’s all world guard Deonte Burton only got 14 pts against Evan and had one of his dunks rejected above the rim. And Evan averaged 20 pts a game and 10 plus boards. If Evan had a better jump shot he’d get a D1 offer.

FYI Fred R. your today’s paper article on Lutheran is incorrect that Jordan Salley he did not play all year due to a ACL injury our center Grant Jarrett stats 18.9 ppg. 10.5rpg per max preps please get the facts correctly!

LOL – Not only that but Darious (sic) Morris has spent most the year in Ann Arbor, MI. So I certainly hope he will not play Thursday.

saw most teams except BP and Workman but will go with Miles as MVP based on everything thats written
    best-
Adams-Damien,very consistent all year, clutch scorer, great off screens, takes the tough shot
Rodriquez-Amat’s leader, tough to defend,go to in the stretch
Jarrett- LVL, best inside presense, defensive monster, boards, outlet, put backs
Northrup- Bonita, true pg makes others better, best defender @ gd in valley, consistent scorer/outside/inside,could be best all around gd
    also-
Cooper- LVL, another solid guard, defense not as consistent as some, good leader,
Miller- Bonita, double double player, pure scorer, like other bonita kid would score more in other systems=more shots
Smith- Glen, scorer, leader, like his game, but injuries and attitude might question
Goldston- amat, part of the one two punch, runs the floor, good slasher, defender

note to “man up” >>>, these kids all play on good teams so 4th qtr is usually a time to sit or not run up scores, the debate is around the quality of teams played all season long not just the highlights, but they made my list debate or not

should be “man up”, >>>. We are 2 different people.

The only point of my post is that for someone to feel Jerrett and/or Cooper do not belong on the list because of the league they play in, is a ridiculous concept. Both of these players have excled against some of the best teams in the State/nation. The stats are not padded by their participation in the Arrowhead. Of that there is NO debate, the non league numbers speak for themself.

    >>>, my mistake, good catch and agreed, I don’t doubt the talent, just explaining were the debate can start, remember they made the list. Check around your town & the sgv, lots of good players who could be on list.

  • More info

Hard to overlook Grant Jerret from LVL for POY honors. He was all tourney 1st team against top talent during the tough preseason schedule where they beat Division 1 Eisenhower as well as other top teams. He didn’t collapse against Price either while being double teamed by their bigs.

  • not sure

How can the LVLuth kids compare to the upper level players? Forget the club ball this is about the 25+games played in high school. And kids in the area, do the LVL kids live in the sgv?Take nothing away from ‘em but keep it level and in the sgv.

  • >>>

Pretty sure these honors are for PLAYING basketball and begrudgingly Fred has admitted LVL is in this paper’s coverage area.

This has nothing to do with where they sleep and eat, that is done at home.

Interesting you only point out LVL, when your argument could possibly apply to a few school’s who have players listed throughout this thread!?!?!?

  • right…

just saw the private vs public in the soccer works here too, different playoff division levels, commute in, recruited…you get the jest. Fred, glad its you not me, keeping it fair here is my take

Coach Hart or Dunn darkhorse-Ekler(needs to go further?)

POY- Miles shoots a ton but needs too
    Adams- Damien big time scorer
    Rodriguez- Amat glue of team
Smith- Glendora great season, thou injured
Northrop-Bonita does everything needed to win
    Cooper-LVL another does everything guard

note 3 privates and 3 publics?

  • JERETT FAN!!!

Grant Jerett is hands down the best player in the San Gabriel Valley. When is the last time any of us have gone to high school games and see head coaches and assistant coaches in the stands?? He is quiet, fundamental, and impossible to stop one on one in the post or free throw line area. Im sure we are all proud of our MCDONALD ALL AMERICAN “NOMINEES”…… Jerett is the ONLY kid in this area to have a chance to be a REAL nominee/candidate for the game. Over 5,000 girls and 5,000 boys are nominated each year. Top 5,000 is terrible……..and top 100 is tough enough!!! No senior or nominated player in the Valley is CLOSE to top 100!! Look it up if you do not believe me. But Jerett is a Legit top 25 player in the nation in 2 years!!! He is top 50 in the soph class right now. Did I mention that he’s a GREAT KID!!! Forget about all of the negative thoughts and press at LVL, the kids are good kids!!!!! Any coach in the Valley would love to have these kids!!!

    1st team

mvp – Bobby Mils (never seen him play, but he is the hype comes from everyone commenting. Also, the character to push on after left high and dry by Cezar.

    Grant Jerett – Enough said

CJ Cooper – men lie, women lie, everyone lies at some point. NUMBERS DONT LIE!!!

Chris Adams – Got better every year. Still room to get even better!!

Tyler Goldstein – Wish h had one more year. Continues to improve. Shows flashes of his uncle, former Mcdonalds all american 1994 Jelani Gardner

Chris Reyes – If he loses the “gentle giant” personality, he could really be something to talk about by his senior year!!! Would be a great match up of 10th grade bigs with him and Jerett.

    others :

bruce english – most athletic player in this area since……..I cant remember a athlete like him locally.

calvin smith – Numbers on paper look better then seeing him in person. As a 10th grader I thought he would be a D1 6’5 point guard at a mid major. Looked like he either got burnt out or lost motivation.

TEAMS – No “I” in team!!! – Complete team effort schools

bonita – bonita always has a group of undersized players with heart bigger than la verne. You can see the fight and determination of a under dog in every game. Playing with a chip on your shoulder can sometimes bring the best out of your team. Ecklers coaching style is almost like the little kid at the playground that was picked on and beatin up for being the smallest. But later found the weight room and grew a couple inches to be able to fight on his own. Whatever it takes!!!! They keep winning.

south hills team – Had no clue they were any good!!

San Dimas – Welcome back to BASKETBALL!! I read and heard names from that team each week that I never even knew played.

    CONGRATS!!!

As far as public versus private there is no argument in regards to LVL.

They have not played a single public school in the playoffs. In fact the only true public schools they have played this year has been in invitationals. I am pretty sure schools like Eisenhower, Compton, Pasadena, Clovis East, Dorsey, Oceanview and Centential have no issue playing LVL.

MVP- Adams damien put up 34 in semis what else do you want from MVP

    1. MILES stats are great did everything for his Workman
    2. Rodriguez Bishop Amat silent Jr is only reason Amat went to semis
    3. Cooper LVL keeps playing and winning championships
    4. Smith Glendora only bright spot in an off year for basketball program
    5. Barr C.O. played out of position his whole carrer and still put up great numbers
    6. Johnson Northview the kid average a double double the whole season I cant believe no one has him on the list

  • Pure Net

“What more does he have to do?”

How about a league title. Seems most POY’s have that on their resume.

    All the others do.

  • Dave

I think you guys should start some kind of national criticism of the H.D. Woodson girls coach Frank Oliver, here in Washington, D.C. where i live. His team ran up the score 86-1 over McKinley on Monday night, then on Wednesday night in first round of playoffs Woodson beat Cardozo 94-0. The McKinley coach was on local radio here talking about how Woodson was “pressing” in the game. Ridiculous. That guy should be fired like the Dallas HS coach.
There is NO room in high school sports for a beatdown like that in 2 consecutive games.

  • Anonymous

I coach at one of the schools in LVL’s “weak” league. We are a small school and we do not recruit. I’m not implying that LVL does, but it will be interesting to see what talent they have coming in next year in the freshman class. Coach Cooper’s son is a freshman. Is he the end?

I work with the talent that I have and we work to get better each year. LVL was not forced by CIF to be in our league. They chose to and had the opportunity to get out when the re-leaguing process started 2 years ago. Now they want to get out and do something like Price does…they should have thought of that 2 years ago.
Grant was POY in league and CJ was O-MVP.

Grant J is a very good player. It helps that he’s pushing 6’9 and routinely sees guys guarding him that are 6’3 or less. But, his talent speaks for itself.

CJ was the reason why LVL won vs. Windward. He can do anything that’s asked of him. Most importantly, he makes his teammates better.
