Bishop Amat’s 2010 Football Schedule; Wake me up when they get to the Serra

Okay, maybe the headline’s a little harsh, but after the Orange Lutheran and St. Bonny’s games the past couple years, you start to get use to those matchups and expectations. Having said that, I understand how difficult it was to fill their nonleague schedule. In past years this certainly wouldn’t help their strength of schedule argument when it comes to Pac-5 at large berths, but there are no more Pac-5 at large berths, so it doesn’t matter. The great thing about the new five-team Serra is that three spots are guaranteed, and by the time they get to league and playoffs, the heavyweights are there waiting anyway. So, guess we just have to be patient, see if they can start 6-0 and watch how they do it, how convincing they do it, and if there’s enough swagger to carry over to the Serra. Hey, it’s Bishop Amat, it’s fun every time they show up regardless of who’s on the other side.

    First, it is unfortunate that CIF broke all logic and precedent by moving St Bonnies into the Maramonte League, creating a TEN team league and giving schools only ONE non-league game. It would have been fun to travel and give Bonnies a chance to avenge last years loss. That might have woken Freddie up a bit and prevented him from “yawning”.

    Fortunately, it says something about the direction of the program that some might say this is a boring schedule – when those same people would be saying it would be a big stretch for any other valley school and applauding them for challenging themselves. Again… perspective.

    Here’s some info and my take on each non league game

    Sept. 3 vs. Garfield @ELAC
    Historic program. Great venue. Good crowd. Fearless squad. Smart Week Zero opener
    Sept. 10 at Dominguez
    CIF Semifinalist. Respected outside the Fish-Bowl. Athletic Moore League-ish team.
    Sept. 17 Muir
    Reviving an important rivalry. Lost to All-World,2-time CIF Juggernauts Charter Oak by a point on last play of the game. No one was yawning then. And they’re better this year
    Sept. 24 Damien
    Local Catholic matchup. Amat’s closest competition to the east. Should happen every year regardless.
    Oct. 1 at Cathedral
    Another Catholic matchup to our West. CIF Finalists.11-2. Lost to Oaks Christian in Finals. In Amat’s league in other sports – making this another natural
    Oct. 8 Venice
    A Top City power on an annual basis. 10-2 last year and will play anyone. Get’s Amat back to a traditional City matchup like the old Carson contests in the past.

    And then you have league play in the 3rd toughest league in the NATION (that only got stronger w/addition of CIF Finalist Alemany) last year to defend the 2009 SERRA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP.

    In a perfect world we’d find a way to add St Paul to the mix – another one that should happen annually. But they’re not up to it now. Maybe soon.

    Don`t be to disappointed with the schedule. It`s only temporary. To play these teams now it will only help recruiting. By beating these teams Amat will get some these teams better athletes or even better their best incoming freshmen in the next few years and than expect Amat to play all of the big boys of high school footall,.ie.. Servite, De la Salle, an out of state team, etc.. People Steve Hagerty and staff know what they our doing. Just watch out in the next few years.

    Ok, if you want to know the truth understand Big Lou was also our Psychology teacher besides our football coach (literally he taught AP Psychology on campus forever) so when the rest of you are upset by his quotes unfortunately unless you’ve played for him you don’t get what he’s trying to say.

    He’s very calculating in what he says and does and not unless you truly have been around the man do you appreciate his generation of coaching. His tactics and ploys always not only got in the opponents head but ours too and for that I would do anything for the old man because he always brought out the best and worst in everyone.

    So kick back and enjoy the ride because Charter Oak may get beat at first but once they figure out the lay of the land I guarantee you they will make some noise. Think about it. Big Lou already has rattled your cage and is probably someplace LHAO!

I suspect they just want to get noticed;because no one really cares.Just like that coach from Garfield set up an all San Gabriel Valley Football Team . Asking why play Garfield is like asking why play Charter Oak, Glendora, Damien, West Covina, Diamond Ranch, etc. Check their record vs the Lancers over the last 6 years – in Amat’s so-called “mediocre” years. The rest of the SGV has yet to win a game vs the Lancers in that time.So about those other SGV teams – “They have no team to speak of.” Amat plays them because “I suspect they just want to get noticed;because no one really cares.”

    Look everyone, Bishop Amat knows what they have to do to get student athletes back into their school. Amat will not play teams like Cor. Centennial, Norco, Chaparral, Oak Christians, Mater Dei, Servite, or De La Salle. Loom at the teams they are playing next year. 4 of 5 teams are in the location of the student that attend bishop amat. It’s a about the recruiting. Amat has schedule much tougher teams in the past, but Amat kind of struggled. Losing to O.Lu, Los Oso, Valencia, Vista, Carson and Hart both back back years. Don’t dis credit Mike DiFiori and Mark Verti for having the balls to play against better teams. Knowing that there league (old Serra) is the toughest league in the nation, they still schedule very good competition. and the last thing about the hole Charter Oak, Amat played C.O. and destroyed Charter Oak. 28-0 and 35-7. Charter Oak score 1 TD in the attempts.

    The last two years Amat has beaten OLU, St Bonaventure and Mater Dei. Bonnies might as well be Oaks Mater Dei beat Centennial & Centennial beat Chapparrel who beat Murrietta who beat Norco – so they’re all the same.
    The present Serra league w/Amat,Notre Dame, Crespi, and Loyola was ranjed last season as a tougher league than the Trinity , with Mater Dei, Olu, etc
    If you read Joe Amat’s post at the bottom – it looks like a tough schedule that makes sense. For sure tougher than anyone else in the SGV.

    Don’t be too suprised when you see some of those IE teams on our schedule in the near future. There is a method to Hags scheduling and I know you can see it. As you can see we are getting back to what the Faithful are used to seeing as far as AMAT football. We take a lot of heat from the locals but as you can see we only have one local school on our schedule so what does that say about them. Another point is the teams we are playing are playoff teams or have been in recent years in their own divisons so its not like we are playing door mats .

    I’m not an Amat hater. But I am weary of the incessant blather of how great the Lancers are. While they are a good local team, the reality is they are a mediocre team on the national level. A number of years ago, I believe they were ranked nationally, but haven’t been at that level in awhile. When a team has the ability to draw the best players from a huge demographic like Amat, they SHOULD in fact, be awesome! But over the past few years, they would have been beaten by no less that 200 public schools from around the country. So….be happy you win a majority of your games, and occasionally a playoff game. But for the love of ……..! Please dial your “we’re all that” rhetoric back a notch!

    Bosshawg – Last season Bishop Amat was the League Champion of the 4th best league in the 3rd best Division _in the country_ and was ranked 101 in the Nation by CalPreps/MaxPreps – public or private. Their ranking was #17 in California (public or private), #12 in all Divisions of the Southern Section, #5 in the Pac5 and #5 in Southern California’s Division2 – and of course #1 in the SGV.
    Now find me ONE example of anyone on here stating anything resembling “”we’re all that”, besides any actual facts, much less “incessant blather”. I bet far less than the number of “Amat haters’ that you claim not to be. Remember Bill Parcells once said, “You are what your record says you are”. The rankings above are a result of a teams record, their opponents record, and their opponents opponents record. Id say they are what their ranking says they are.
    Now go chase those dadgum Duke boys!

    Let’s break it down by frequency and by actual individuals. MOst haters will be surprised it’s all on them.

    What’s hilarious about this most Amat haters, or really any hater when you think about it, is this over powering “need” to take it upon themselves to “put (fill in the blank) in their place!” It’s always an over powering “need” to stop someone from making any comment that trumps the hater’s own life.     Same goes for those that question BA schedule yet never acknowledge the teams that play BA while conveniently avoiding their own team’s lack of being the “Garfields and Cathedrals of the world” and seeking tougher than Fish Bowl competition.

    Same goes for Amat’s “never gonna smell a Championship” talk yet somehow forget to address Gano, Boagn and Farrar’s comments about “double whammies” and “long rides home after getting your butts kicked”…I almost feel out of my chair hearing all those coaches make comments that would be laughed out of any Pac 5 coaching meeting.

    The Fish Bowl has been dumped in the Ocean and everyone will see how tough BA has had it for years playing bigger, faster, stronger teams and competing to the bets of their ability. 10-2 and Hagerty doesn’t win Coach of the Year…that’s just plain S.T.U.P.I.D.!!!

    No one needs to brag about Amat. Their history comes in the door before anyone looks at the players individually. Those that believe Amat’s best days are behind them only need to ask last year’s opponents who are still scratching their heads wondering how and why?
