Baseball Rankings: Bishop Amat, South Hills and Glendora still top three, but also time to give Walnut and Los Altos some respect

Above: Los Altos pitcher Mike Luna.

Tribune Baseball Rankings
1. Bishop Amat (7-1) – After an incredible week in the Newport Elks tourney, they keep piling up big wins, beating Chatsworth 7-1 and pounding Palos Verdes Peninsula. When Paez is pitching, they’re truly one of the best, if not the best team in the state.
2. South Hills (6-1) — They deserve to jump back to No. 2 after beating West Covina, with a lone loss to Chino Hills. Looking at their schedule, they might not lose again until they face Bishop Amat on April 28. Oh wait, I forgot they have something called the National Classic inbetween. My bad.
3. Glendora (6-1) – The 1-0 loss at Diamond Bar was no knock at all, the Tartans have allowed two runs or less in six of their seven games. Pitching gets it done and they have it. The Tartans are built to go the distance.
4. Walnut — (4-1-1) – Along with Los Altos, another big surprise. They have a tie against Chino Hills and a 12-11 win over Diamond Bar. We should have had them ranked earlier, that was our mistake.
5. Diamond Bar (4-3) — The Brahmas can beat anyone when Kenny Mathews is pitching, but without him, they need to outslug teams, and they have the hitters to do that. The problem is, you’re going to lose games like they did to Walnut that way, 12-11.
6. Damien (4-2) -- Tough 7-6 loss to Chino Hills, not the way they wanted to open the Sierra League, and now they’re at Glendora on Wednesday. The league is brutal, there are no days off and it’s impossible to really predict games. Just play ‘em and see what happens.
7. Los Altos (6-1) – The No. 1 ranking in Div. III on MaxPreps was surprising considering they were ranked over South Hills, but they’re legit and probably the Miramonte favorites. They ended last year on a quarterfinal tear in the playoffs, and that confidence has caried over.
8. Gladstone (7-0) – Undefeated is undefeated. I don’t care if they’re a mid-major in our parts, they’re getting it done against who they line up against.
9. Northview (3-2-1) – Off all the pitchers in the Valley, lefty Eddie Pedroza is off to the best start. If only the Vikes had solid No. 2 pitching. Anyways, this should be good enough to give them the inside track in the VVL.
10. Bonita (3-2-1) -- Nice wins over Charter Oak and San Dimas, but the Chargers and Saints are having a tough year, so tough to make much out of it. Then there is the 19-3 loss to Claremont. This is why Los Altos is now the league favorite.

LA is way overrated only played one team above .500 and they lost that game at home. enough said.

  • kh

you just hated to do it,but we earned it.
like in bowling, rackem up.moe them down.
how could you place n.v on top.when they wanted no part of bonita for the third place slot in the glendora trny.we scored six runs off there ace before they know what hit them, and we would do it again.fred fred fred.i like how you down play cif champs s.d. and power house baseball school c.o. this year.but up play little glsn, and walnut .i hope l.a. is for real today the pitching to me is weak all around expect a couple kids here and there.so if your d.r. do you throw your ace today to try and keep a winning record or do you save him for thursdays game agaisnt the bearcats.i know what i what do?i hate leftovers, theres no saving food, lets eat while its hot boys.good luck my baseball bulleys

  • ENOUGH

    kh,
Give it a rest now . Must you keep coming on here about Bonita. Just let the boys play the games and the cards will fall where they fall. You are like a broken record. If they are that good it will show . They don’t need your constant harping on here if things aren’t your way . You sound like the kid who threatens to take his ball home and end the game if he doesn’t get to bat first.

  • warren spahn

kh, any coach worth a da** uses his starting pitchers the same day of the week all season long, you’re #1 guy starts on Friday, you don’t use him the following Tuesday or vice-versa, have another O’Douls willya!

  • scores

LA over rated??? That’s exactly what they said about them last year and look what they did in the Playoffs! By the way…what happened to Wilson? Weren’t they ranked #7 last time around?

  • socal baseball fan

Walnut and Diamond Bar will be meeting again in the Northview tournament. Problem for DBHS they have not found a #3 pitcher. Team will be stronger when Chester Pak returns.
Today I went to the Rogers Heritage(Arkansas) vs Redlands game played at RHS. Rogers Heritage was 9-0 before coming to california. On monday they lost to preseason baseline favorite Alta Loma in 8 innings. Today Redlands beat RH 6-2. Starting for Redlands was sr lhp Tallen Parker who went 5 2/3 innings and picked up his 2nd win in 2 days. He closed out the 7th inning vs Kaiser. Jr ss Kayden Glass and soph 2b Brian Ruhm homered for the terriers. Redlands looks like the #3 team from the CBL behind Yucaipa and REV. Next year with all the frosh-sophs playing major rolls they should be the CBL favorite. Frosh CF Sean Smith made a nice running catch with 2 on 0 outs in the top of the 7th.

  • really?

So Cal baseball, The Heritage team is VERY avg at best and made numerous mistakes vs Alta Loma and didnt take very many good swings against avg pitching on monday. Alta Loma the preseason baseline favorite?? Thats the first ive heard of that. They return only 4 players who played much from the previous season. On top of that, they have brand new, unproven pitching throughout the staff while upland (frazier-pepp) and Rancho (Reed-sd st) have div 1 signees returning on the hill. Usually youre reliable with your takes but i had to call u on that one.

  • over rated

LA has some pesky players ,,, but in my opinion is way over rated they have three legit players but besides that very weak team,,,,, and for the wilson game the game was 5-3 into the 6th inning and the reason it turned out so bad was because wilson took out their lefty in the sixth and put in a pitcher who threw BP Fastballs to them ,,,,similar with wilson without that lefty very weak team

  • O Douls for KH

    KH,
So worried about the Vikings of Northview. 6 runs off their ace before he knew it? Are you seriously talking about those little league homeruns at Goddard? Northview has moved on, so should you. The funny thing is the people at Bonita dread your comments here along with the rest of the valley…put a cork in it, not a wine cork though…cuz it might “taste so good when it touches your lips” ala Frank The Tank from Old School. Be glad you guys are 1-0 in the Miramonte. That should be your concern, rather than knocking any other team.

  • jib jib

    walnut? are you serious
    they almost lost to rowland
    wow.

  • Real Housewives of Hollenbeck

Hey mr odouls, how come Northview DIDNT play Bonita the second time at the Glendora tournament? Im hoping someone like you knows the real answer since it never was talked about here. Oh and while Im thinking about it, how come only the home runs bonita hit were little league? Did they make you guys stand farther away, like in the parking lot or something? If they did, thats too bad because you are really a good team and would have probably won if they hadnt. If your team was hitting on the same field from the same place why didnt you just hit more home runs? All of us know you are the better team and that you only lose when you are cheated by the other team or the umpires or something like that. Anyway keep up the winning and I hope you hit more home runs next time.

  • biggamejames

kh where are you? bonita trounces LA and your silent ? whats the dealio

Alta Loma beat Upland last week 10-7 and is the defending baseline league champions. Upland after playing a weak schedule is 0-2 in the baseline league. Los Osos seems to be playing well. Today Rogers Heritage hit the ball well however Redlands made some fine defensive plays. The ss and 2b for Rogers Heritage kept them in the game. The weakness was Redlands ran on the lhp who had a slow delivery to 1b and home plate. 3 times they stole second and the next batter singled them home. Finals could be REV vs Redlands with the edge to REV pitching. Redlands on thur plays Alta Loma.

    kh,

keep the posts coming no matter what the others say. We love em. At least u r passionate about your team and the game of baseball.

And Bonita just beat los altos, so u were right on.

Charter oak worked D ranch 13-5. D ranch seems to be overmatched coaching wise and the players just are not competing. dj wallace 2 bombs 380 and 400 plus.

  • Just askin’

playhardr – what’s behind ranking GHS #1 and BAHS #2? Just because or a reason? Have the GHS wins been over more impressive teams? Was the GHS loss to somebody better than the BAHS loss? Or just because?

  • Bonita & Northview?

northview didnt play bonita cause the game is getting a little old…doesnt northview play bonita like 6times in the summer? and i heard bonita had one hit that wasnt a homerun. Everyone knows you guys lost that game cause that kid was safe at the plate. You hit routine pop flies off of northviews ace. Tuttle’s homerun was on his tippy toes cause it was a good pitch and they got him what they wanted to do?pop up. Northview straight up outhit you guys. they had basehit after basehit after basehit, they played their game like someone said they play well. a loud rowdy game. If you guys are as good as you say you are, why not save the talking til northview has their tourny, isn’t Bonita in that tourny….and trust your not gonna get a cheap homerun their. so lets see how much pop your kids really have?

    just askn,

basically, my thought is that Glendora lost to maybe the best pitcher in the SGV, o cty, and la cty. So I am giving that a lot of weight.

I saw O lus pitchers vs Amat and they were no where near the level of D bar’s so thats about it. Ok o lu s guy is going to usc but he was not on that night.

I believe that Amat has great players and great coaching overall, (better coaching than Glendoras)however I am convinced that Glendora has deeper pitching and much more experienced seniors that will come to compete. The only thing holding Glendora back is the “spoiled kid attitudes” that could surface however with that group of seniors I doubt that will happen.

Glendoras achilles heel is facing a southpaw. They now have struggled against 2, Northview and D Bars.

  • ?

Saw the Bonita vs LA game yesterday and both teams look average at best. LA has no pitching depth and defense and Bonita’s pitching looked average. Tall Lefty was hitting about 80-81 on the gun. Neither one of these teams should be ranked in the top 5 in the SGV.

  • Baseball NUT!

I think AMAT should STILL be # 1, and SOUTH HILLS # 1a. Its pretty damn close. I follow BOTH VERY close, having went to AMAT, and had a son play at SH.
We can say Amat has had a tougher road to date, and that may be true, BASED on what the RANKINGS were in PRE season. Their opponents who were ALL ranked are NOT very good other than Orange LU. That can change come CIF, BUT Mater Dei, is a .500 team, as is Palm Desert. Chatsworth who has won city year after year is 4-3, and the defending DIV I champ CAPO VLY, is 3-5.

Its a long season, AND many teams can win a title. TRIB rankings should have a PRE SEASON, THEN NOTHING UNTIL MAY 1. Just remember its where they finish!
South Hills finished second in league, 8th in FINAL regular season CIF rankings, and WON IT ALL!

  • Where’s Damien?

Whats brutal is Damien at #6! They are flat out bad, from top to bottom.

No D, 2 bats and weak pitching. Did they show up today?
