Baseball: San Dimas, Northview take care of business in the Valle Vista; Diamond Bar and Glendora win in the Sierra

Above: San Dimas’ Shawn Kennedy, left, went 3 for 5 with two RBIs to lead San Dimas to an 11-5 victory over Covina on Friday.

San Dimas and Northview took care of business Friday, each scoring victories over Covina and Baldwin Park respectively.
The Saints, getting a little help from five Colt errors, received two RBIs each from Shawn Kennedy and Kevin Kolbeck and rallied back from an early 5-2 deficit to score an 11-5 win at Covina.
Northview got a two-run single from Bobby Ramos in the sixth and won at Baldwin Park, 9-5. San Dimas and Northview play for first place on Wednesday.
San Dimas coach Mike Regan: “The best thing about Friday for us was that our guys learned how to fight back. We haven’t really done that this year. Today, our guys showed a lot of heart and responded.”
Northview coach Darren Murphy: “No disrespect to Ganesha and Pomona. I think everyone feels the Valle Vista League really starts with Baldwin Park, San Dimas and Covina. Baldwin Park is the first of three tough games (for us) and this is always a tough place to win.”
Covina coach Pete Loaiza: “They took us out of our game. We allowed them to take us out of our game. That’s just something we have to get better at. We have to make sure in pressure situations and tight ball games that we have to deal with the mental aspect in a league battle against a good program.”
Baldwin Park coach Jake Berendregt: “I think our inexperience kind of caught up with us. We came back to take the lead (4-3) and battled a good team for six innings.”
Other results
Kenny Mathews had another solid outing as Diamond Bar continued its surge in the Sierra League with a 2-1 victory over Chino in nine innings. Mathews went the distance for the victory.
Glendora had too much for Chino Hills, scoring an 8-2 win.

Looking at max preps the brahmas had to go 9 innings to beat Chino 2-1. LHP Kenny Mathews pitched all 9 innings fanning 14 and giving up 3 hits. In addition Mathews and Jeff Crowe had3 hits each. Diamond Bar hopefully will get OF Chester Pak back soon as they miss his big bat.

In the Redlands Baseball Invitational REV and Redlands won their pools and will meet tomorrow at U of Redlands for the title. Bad thing as the schools will play each other next friday in the CBL 2nd game. Look for freshman Angel Landazuri to start for the terries with REV using lhp 6’5″ soph Justin Jacome. Redlands hs had a slow start to the season however they have played well in this tournament beating Kaiser,Rogers Heritage, and Alta Loma. REV advanced by beating Etiwanda,Montclair, and Rancho Cucamonga.

I’m surprised Damien only scored 3 runs in defeating Ayala. This Damien team is not clicking yet and needs to start playing better baseball if they are to be any factor this year. Glendoras easy win over chino hills looks ugly for the rest of the sierra. They have d1 scholarship kid who hasn’t even thrown an inning in league yet…scary. the Mathews kid is a stud, don’t let the coach throw your arm out kid. You have a future.

Impressive showing by the Colts jumping out to a 5-2 lead early until the foul-ups.
Covina can take down San Dimas if they can get to the Saints early again and keep the lead strong. Good showing by Northview. The Vikings and Saints are on a 3-game league winning streak. The league game of the week will be next week’s showdown with Northview at Covina, the rivalry renewed.

In the title game of the RBI classic Redlands East Valley beat Redlands hs 4-2. These two teams will meet friday in a key CBL game.
In the IE Invitational Upland hs beat Colton 7-5. Upland will next meet Riverside Christian and then Wilma Carter in pool play. They should easily win these games and get into wednesday’s finals. Upland has played in 2 weak tournaments including their own and outside of league is 7-0. In league play they are now 0-3 with the loss friday to Claremont in which Upland’s ace Frazier took the loss. Upland was #9 in the D2 poll.
Yucaipa took another double header beating Compton Centennial 13-2 and 6-0. Yucaipa opens CBL play wed vs Eisenhower. Yucaipa should be the #2 rated team in D2 polls next time they come out behind Crespi.

The VVL Game of the Week is Northview at San Dimas. Why, 2 back to back cif champion, both 3-0 in league, going head to head is first on the docket to be honest. I like some stuff I see in Covina, but a rivalry isn’t renewed until Goliath (Northview) is knocked down first. That’s when the rivalry gets some respect again. Been incredibly lopsided last few yers in Vikings favor. Good luck to the VVL this week. What do I know anyway, I’m a Charter Oak fan.

The LA Times has Bishop Amat at #2 this week behind Lakewood who starts a freshmen ss. He was on the USA 14 and under team last summer.
The LAT does include Glendora in the top 25 along with Upland. I guess Eric Sondheimer does not follow Upland closely and does not know they are 0-3 in Baseline league play. Both REV and Yucaipa made the top 25. Top Division 2 school was Crespi.

It’s all good. The Lancers are just getting ready for the upcoming National Classic. Gonna be good! I believe the Lancers just knocked off the Royal this past weekend. Didn’t get a chance to go but was wondering how did it go? Was it Amats pitching , Hitting or both? If you were there please share.
