It’s with a heavy heart that we report that South Hills star softball player Britney Rodriguez lost her brother Tony in an auto accident Thursday

Our thoughts and prayers are with 18-year-old Tony Ha and Jacinto Rodriguez, the brother and father of South Hills high star softball player Britney Rodriguez. Britney’s brother Tony was killed and her father Jacinto hospitalized after an auto accident Thursday on the 10 freeway. Jacinto Rodriguez’s injuries aren’t life threatening, but obviously this is a very difficult time for the family. Funeral arrangements are pending, and those who would like to help with donations can use the address below.

Thank you, Mr. Robledo, for sharing this.

Tony was Brit’s greatest fan and best friend. He was at practically every single one of Brit’s games…not to mention all the hours that he would sit on the benches at South Hills just watching her practice. He was very proud of Britney, but it was a quiet pride, something that you could see just by looking at him. He was the only brother of 5 younger sisters and you could tell he would do anything for any one of them. I will miss him. My families prayers and condolences are with Jack and Mary and the girls.

(Just as a side note, the address for donations is not the families home address…it is a post office box that was set up specifically for this occasion.)

Sad to say after I picked my daughter we ran home, before we headed to the mall to get some shoes. As I got on the on-ramp at Via Verde, it was backed up. We saw the Rodriguez van. We were there roughly at 3:00 and they said the accident was at 2:25. We saw Mr Rodriguez in a stretcher waiting to be put into the ambulance. OUR prayers are with the Rodriguez family at this time. I will make sure I make a donation tomorrow from my 9 yr old daughter’s name.

correction on my previous comment as I am in a daze…”he was the only brother of *4* younger sisters”

We all need to pull together and help the Rodriquez family. They are a very close family and I can’t even fathom what they are going through, so please all sports families and fans lets do this and help one of our own.

  • Be careful out there

This is the second time in a few years that South Hills has suffered a traffic related tragedy. The Football team had an terrible incident as well. You never know when something like this can happen. Whenever I se high school kids driving like mad men thru parking lots after school of after games I cringe. I sold a car for this very reason. Every time I was in it I had some idiot buzzing me and taking liberties with my safety.

What an incredible tragedy and in broad day light…actually both South Hills accidents happened before sunset, so these things can happen at any time.

Our prayers are with the family.

Today, Britney Rodriguez stepped onto the field for the first time since her brothers passing. She went to school in the morning, wearing her softball varsity jersey, as is the tradition for all varsity team players on game days. She told her mother Mary in the morning that she was returning to school, her first day back since the tragedy, dressed to play only because it was what Tony would expect from her.

Today South Hills played against Walnut. And although a league game, I must say that to me, todays game wasnt about winning or losing it was about coming together in the face of a tragedy. One would expect the ribbons worn by all the South Hills players Dodger blue in color, since Tony was an avid Dodger fan, with Tonys name written on each one. What one wouldnt expect were the arm bands worn by each and every player and coach on Walnuts HS team, also with Tonys name on them. Prior to the game, flowers were discreetly presented to me and asked if I could give to Tonys mom, along with a sympathy card. And the Walnut parents were amongst the first to clap when Britney approached the plate. What a classy group Walnut parents, coaches and players are! Thank you!!

No one can really know what was going through Britneys mind during that plate appearance we only saw the tears streaming down her face, through our own tears. Her deep fly ball to right barely missed going out of the parkwe all jumped out of our seats in anticipation. The ball was caught, but Britneys mission was accomplished facing her first at-bat without her brother in the stands. We, South Hills and Walnut, all applauded herwe all stood proud WITH her and proud OF her.

One more good thing came out of all of this, at least for me, personallyat the end of the game, an old friend and I made our peace. Because when tragedies such as this occur, one realizes that life is too short to live it with regrets.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
