Just Tribbin: What’s up with CIF-State officials censoring your questions?

Anything and anyone you want to talk about…

I’m not going to explain this one, the L.A. Times did it for me: Tough questions apparently aren’t allowed here at the state basketball championships. Or even obvious ones. Fred Robledo, a reporter from the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, was attempting to ask Bishop Amat Coach Richard Wiard about suffering the worst defeat in a girls’ basketball state championship game when he was cut off mid-sentence by a California Interscholastic Federation official. The official explained himself seconds later, whispering in my ear to ask the question off to the side, not in front of the kids.

Also from the Times: Stockton St. Mary’s made its case. And Rams Coach Tom Gonsalves wants the whole world to know it.

    Fred,

You’re having a big month with CIF. I guess I won’t be shocked in August when we’re wondering why our press passes haven’t shown up.

  • Fred asked the wrong question

Fred should have asked the St. Mary’s coach why he ran up the score and pushed sportsmanship out of the picture.

This coach is a lot like Greg Wise at Houston Yates High School. He is more about the Polls.

Some coaches get it and some don’t.

  • Fred asked the wrong question

St, Mary’s used the game to prove he was the #1 team in the country by running up the score. Has Amat ever done that? Not sure but all winning teams know how to put a whupping on people especially in the league their in. Does it excuse the St. Mary’s coach, who knows his job was to either win a state championship or to try and win a mythical national championship (no caps).

The one question I have is why an injured player was re-inserted after obviously injuring her knee early and then going it another go and then going in after icing the knee. “That” I’ve never heard of but the player is in for a tough rehab road. I could maybe, and I mean it’s a huge maybe, if the score was close or the game was competitive~ but it wasn’t.

That should have been Fred’s first question, “How’s your player?”

A running fourth quarter clock was the right thing to do but even at that the St. Mary’s HC called all his time outs.

  • Steve Ramirez

You guys are missing the point. This is the United States of America. A reporter SHOULD be allowed to ask any question he/she so desires. It doesn’t have to be answered, but the reporter has the right to ask.

  • why

Why with such a record and ranking is St. Mary’s a D3 school?

  • sherlock

This is where our society is heading. You cannot say anything unless it is nice nice, or ask anything that nigh offend someone or put them on the spot.

Why dont we just become China West. This is way out of hand. Teaparty here I come.

  • Where’s the flavor?

Steve maybe the point is writers are guest and as such should respect the rules of the host. The point was “NOT ON THE COURT”.

Case in point, The Tribune purposely kept LVL out of the rankings for three years. The questions and issues bloggers raised were censored. The validity of LVL exclusion was meritless and then The Tribune has the gall to write about LVL winning a Championship for the San Gabriel Valley. The same SGV that has excluded them from tournaments, rankings and shunned them as pariahs.

Frank Deford has his usual “rubenesque”, his word, piece on his coming of age as a Sportswriter from his early days straight out of Princeton to the present. One story struck me when he mentioned writers so tanked other writers from other papers would write articles to cover each other’s drunk behinds. Imagine that today, heck, as if that doesn’t still happen. Didn’t a famous sportswriter write an article about Being on a plane to the NCAA Championship Basketball Game when in reality he missed the flight! What wrist slap did he get from his fellow writers? How about the reporters who hung out with Tiger and cheat on their wives and yet write stories about the merits of his apologies.

Steve with all the access you guys gets, along with the perks, the best question Fred could come up with is “How does it feel lose by the biggest margin ever?” What a douche bag! Lazy ass reporting!

Here’s a tough question. Why hasn’t The Tribune put any area coaches on notice for excluding LVL for three year and then casually mentioning the “start” by Covina to “break ranks”.. the story the reality of “ranks” and not the “breaking” from “ranks” that previously were ignored.

Any USC or Syracuse grads over there at the Tribune or are they still goo goo over a high school grad who worked at Fox….wow! Talk about big time!!!!

Didn’t Miguel actually mention during the Football playoffs, this past season, that he was going out drinking with the boys after a friend’s dad passed away…rather than report on a playoff game. Or was that all urban myth?

Write a story about “your” perception of what happened and then readers can know the writer…instead it’s like food without salt.

  • TEA BAGGERS

YOU DO KNOW THE “TEA PARTY” IS A POLITICAL CONSTRUCT ON THE LEVEL THAT WOULD MAKE MAO PROUD DON’T YOU?

    GRASS ROOTS? SURELY YOU JEST.

  • FredJ

Where’s the flavor, haven’t we gone over this? Since you have a short memory, let’s do it one more time. No. 1, The Tribune kept you out of rankings and all area no different than Ganesha or Pomona because you were considered “Bulletin” schools until a decision was made to include Lutheran in the Trib area. No. 2, Since the Lutheran three-year run started, I’m the one who has been reporting on the blog that area schools should play Lutheran, just ask your coach. No. 3, that wasn’t “the best question Fred could come up with,” it was one of several questions, which led to broader questions about St. Mary’s running up the score. No. 4, Lutheran has been invited to a local tournament, now it’s on them to accept, otherwise, coverage will be difficult during next season again, for reasons I explained on other threads. Local leagues, local tournaments and local head-to-head games take precedent over Lutheran-Sherman Indian, or Lutheran tournaments games hours away.

  • Fred’s a politician

Fred you should go into politics. LVL was clearly shunned for three years.
You’ve ignored the story behind why, who, when where and how? At least admit it was convenient how their State Championship coincided with their inclusion. No sense looking like idiots or having your journalistic integrity called into question. Now POY will be interesting, COY will be even more interesting and final rankings will be a political hot potato. Good luck wiping the egg off your face.

Haha, talk about a politician, why dont you just run ads supporting your candidates..

  • coach of the year?

are you kidding, coach of the year better not go to lutheran, that’s ridiculous. that should go to a hard working coach who overachieved not a coach who brought his own players in to win a 10A championship, c’mon.

  • Flavored “ranks”

    Running ads? Who’d running?

    Simple question.

Have to asked the area coaches specifically why they have not played LVL or invited them to tournaments previously or played in tournaments where LVL would play? You wrote it yourself…Covina “breaks” ranks. Duh?

Wheres that story? ~ and what’s a “rank”?
