Breaking News: Los Altos softball coach Lydell McCullough resigns; ex-football coach Felipe Aguilar to take over

Los Altos softball coach Lydell McCullough said he had to resign today after getting a promotion at work that will not allow him to continue as softball coach. McCullough was an off campus coach who took over for Greg Gano last year and led the Conquerors to their fourth straight Miramonte League title. They were 5-3 this year when he resigned on Monday. He will be replaced by assistant Felipe Aguilar. The Conquerors former head football coach will take over on an interim basis the rest of the season. With McCullough’s wife a teacher and in danger of losing her job because of ongoing budget cuts, McCullough said he had no choice to resign with his new position.
“It’s very disappointing, I feel bad for the girls because you always want to finish the season,” McCullough said. “But I have another team at home that is depending on me too, so there was really no choice.”

    Looks like Felipe is going to mess up another program. I thought LA admin learned there lesson at the football programs expense. He was the pitching coach on the boys team a few years ago, we all know how that worked out. Bring John up at least you have someone incharge that cares.

    Looks like pump your brakes. Los Altos football slide had more to do with lack of talent more than Felipe. He was not given the chance to grow with the program. It was a shamble when he got it and it will be a shamble next year. Why do you think none of the elite coaches were lining up to take the LA job? To tell the truth, i’m not really sold on the new coach either. Let’s see how did Northview do last year? Holy crap give the kid a chance to become a coach. If you really want to look at LA’s bigger issue lets start with the AD and work from there.

    John may not be the best but look what Felipe did to the football program in two years. Now factor in Felipe’s great knowledge of softball?

    The school administration fired him as head coach of the football program due to his lack of leadership then they give him the head coach of the softball team. What does that say about Mr. Garcia.

    I just found out the real reason why Lydell stepped down, pressure from CIF. Lydell has a good friend in CIF and was asked by him to step down because of all the complaints CIF was receiving from LA parents. The complaints centered around the three sophomores that Lydell recruited from South El Monte. All three sophomores were guaranteed starting spots on the team if they transferred over according to the parents. Lydell coached all three of these players on his travel ball team three years ago. The CIF undo influence rule is 24 months. To complicate the issue the program has lost quality players due to these transfers. Interesting now that Lydell is gone these South El Monte girls cant transfer back they used their freshmen one free move option, while staying at their current addresses in South El Monte. Looks like another Gano situation in the softball program. I didnt even notice until just know look who is replacing Lydell, Felipe.

    ur a joke and u need to get a life. that’s funny u mentioned the 3 south el monte girls. I know for a fact that only 2 of them played for him like 5 years a go. and they only played for him for 4 months. the 2 that did play for him are actually supposed to go to Mountain View and Arroyo. so actually, south recruited that girl to their school. The 1 player that didn’t play for him is supposed to go to south. but like I said, she never played for him. now what? know ur facts! it’s sad that u have to come on here and make up stuff. Lydell has been coaching for a long time and has never been accused of such things.

    Well since you questioned by comments I checked with two other sources both confirmed most of those comments. Two of them confirmed the CIF issues and all three confirmed the conflict with the LA girls and the South El Monte girls. Now if you want to split hairs about only two of them being from South El Monte so what. If you want to split hairs about it being 5 years and not 3 years so what. The general term that has been used about the team is these three girls came from South El Monte if they didn’t so what.

    Now the whole Felipe thing also makes it funny, A head coach that lacks leadership gets fired from the football program and then gets hired as the head coach of the softball program, you really start to question school administration.
