Boys Soccer All-Area: Rowland’s Henry Calistro player of the year; Mountain View coaching staff earns coach of the year honors

By Fred J. Robledo, Staff Writer
Mountain View has become the mecca of high school boys soccer in the San Gabriel Valley.
The Vikings made history earlier this month by winning their second consecutive CIF-Southern Section Division 6 title. It was the Vikings’ third divisional championship since 2005 as they became just the second team in Valley history to win back-to-back boys soccer titles. The only other school to do it was Diamond Bar, which won consecutive Division 3-A titles in 1987 and ’88. (To continue, click thread.)

Because of Mountain View’s 2-1 victory over Oak Hills in the Division 6 championship game, Vikings co-head coaches Severo Juarez and Javier Aguiniga have been named 2010 Tribune boys soccer Coaches of the Year, an award they share with the third member of their coaching staff, Felipe Corona, after going 16-4-4.

“We love the game, and we’re proud of what we’ve done here and want to represent soccer and our school the right way,” Aguiniga said. “We’ve created a big name in soccer, and if that gets more kids to college and more college coaches come to see us, that’s great. We’re here to put in the work and get the best out of our kids.”

Rowland senior striker Henry Calistro, who led the Raiders to their first league title since 1985, has been named the Tribune’s Player of the Year.

Calistro, who displayed a blend of speed, touch and perhaps the best finishing skills around, led the Raiders to the San Antonio League title when they beat South Hills, 2-1.

“Henry is the best player I’ve seen in a long time,” South Hills coach Casey Stratton said. “I’ll be interested to see where the future takes him. He’s tremendous.”

The San Antonio League MVP helped the Raiders to a 13-8-4 record and scored half the team’s 64 goals to lead the area in scoring, which also was fourth best in the CIF-Southern Section.

Valle Vista League champion and Division 5 semifinalist Baldwin Park leads the Tribune’s All-Area first team with three selections. Mountain View and Los Altos both landed two players on the first team.

Baldwin Park’s Edgar Padilla was one of three forwards selected after helping the Braves to a 24-1-1 record with 20 goals and 11 assists, which also landed Padilla on the CIF-SS Division 5 first team.

Mountain View striker Julio Fernandez was named Co-Division 6 Player of the Year. He led the Vikings with 10 goals and seven assists.

Montview League Most Valuable Player and CIF-SS Division 4 first-team honoree Luis Fuentes was a dangerous forward too, leading Sierra Vista to the league title with 26 goals and five assists.

Mountain View’s Jose Ramirez, Diamond Ranch’s Paul Dewhurst, Los Altos’ Alan De La Rosa and Glendora’s Jeremy Bishop were the four midfielders named to the first team.

Ramirez was a steady presence for the Vikings, finishing with six goals and six assists to earn CIF-SS Division 6 first-team honors as well as a spot on the All-Mission Valley League first team.

De La Rosa had nine goals and five assists for the Conquerors, which not only landed him on the All-Miramonte League first team but also led to a CIF-SS Division 4 first-team selection.

Bishop helped lead Glendora to the Sierra League title, which was just the second boys soccer championship in school history.

Bishop finished with 14 goals and 13 assists for the 17-5-5 Tartans. Bishop was named the Sierra League Player of the Year and was chosen for the CIF-SS Division 2 first team.

Diamond Ranch’s Dewhurst finished a great career for the Panthers, earning Miramonte League first-team honors.

The first-team defenders included Los Altos’ Luis Pinedo, Baldwin Park’s Jose Pacheco, La Puente’s Alex Hernandez and Baldwin Park goalkeeper Freddy Salazar.

Hernandez finished second in the voting for Montview League MVP honors and was named to the CIF-SS Division 4 second team.

Los Altos’ Pinedo earned Miramonte League first-team honors and was selected to the CIF-SS Division 4 third team.

Pacheco earned Division 4 second-team honors for the Braves as well as a spot on the Valle Vista League first team.

Salazar earned Tribune first-team goalkeeper honors for the second consecutive year and also was the CIF-SS Division 4 Goalkeeper of the Year with eight shutouts.
