Bishop Amat pounds Mater Dei 7-2, Zavala cracks three homers and the Lancers are 3-0

On a separate note, the L.A. Times reports that with Dodger and Angel Stadium unavailable, the Southern Section baseball finals for its top divisions will be held at the Lake Elsinore Storm, an 8,000-seat facility used by the San Diego Padres' Class-A team, on June 4 and 5. The other division finals will take place at UC Riverside.

Bishop Amat moved into the semifinals of the Newport Elks tournament with a 7-2 win at Mater Dei on Monday, which comes after Elks victories over Palm Desert and Corona Santiago. Bernardo Zavala, who we failed to mention in our preview, had three homers and five RBIs. When you're getting production from new names to go with the line-up they already have, that's scary. Brandon McNitt struck out seven in going the distance, sending the Lancers to Wednesday's semifinal against Capistrano Valley, the reigning Division I champions, at Capistrano Valley High at 3:15 p.m, and we're hearing lefty Paul Paez will get the nod. BTW, Capo Valley crushed St. Paul 16-2 and also is 3-0. Coach, what do you think?
"Its' Always nice to start out on the right foot," Lancers coach Andy Nieto said. "Mater Dei is Mater Dei, it's not one of their great teams, but they have a lot of tradition and are always good.
"I still don't think our guys are operating on full cylinders, but it's also nice to have others step up (Zavala) so you're not counting on the same faces all the time. It wasn't just the three home runs, it's how hard he's hitting the ball. Offensively, this team has a chance to compete, we just have to keep working."

How about those Lancers . Rep'n the SGV like no other can. Knocked Capo and MD down to show those oc boys how we all play ball in the SGV. Great job Lancers.

What's Amat doing in that cheap tournament when they could be facing the best teams in the SGV right here in the Glendora tournament. Chicken?!? LMFAO

Roy-wah, wah, wah...That old, tired excuse is so worn out! I wish I had a dollar for everytime somebody brought up that same OLD EXCUSE. The little D-IV school whooped up on the big bad D-I school the old fashion way, ON THE FIELD. Now because our coach is telling it like it is about our desire to play the best whenever, where ever, we have to hear the whinners and haters start the recruiting talk. If the other schools were all that, then the athletes that are about to start their high school experience would utilize the open enrollment rule (that by the way is available to any school) and chose to enroll in YOUR high schools superior school setting. Don't be a hater because some athletes and their families CHOSE to come to AMAT and not their local schools. If your kid is not a Sophamore, you to can be a lancer but you better hurry. Oh, and tell your kid to bring his "A" game because spots in our starting rotations are hard to get!

Being a BIG follower of AMAT football (played in early 80's) and South Hills baseball, ( son & nephew went and played for SH) I must say IF AMAT wins today @ CAPO Vallley, they should NOT only be the # 1 TRIB team, but the La Times, as well as the STATE rankings. While South Hills probably has more BATS 1 through 9, Amat's pitching VS TOP quality deserves the nod. I know Mater Dei, & Santiago BOTH lost their # 1 pitchers, but STILL!

Roy,
You can have ALL the talent in the state, BUT if you don't play together, nothing transpires. ASK the Yankees about 2001-2008, or USC football the last few years( and I am a SC ticket holder), or Red Wings Hockey. The TOP/BEST talent doesn't always prevail!

In the valley preview, nieto says, "I challenge anyone to say their schedule is as tough as ours" or something to that effect...how about waking up and understanding that it's real nice to make a great schedule when you get to call players and ask them to come to your school, aka recruiting...way different ballgame...don't act like you're doing something others don't do...

Yes I remember that post also Joe . I was speaking with my neighbor the other day who's son is a Junior at AMAT and plays on the baseball team. He mentioned Zavala to me and said they were trying to fit him in somewhere and get him in the line up . Sometimes it is worth it to stick around because you never know when your number comes up . Congrats to this fine young man fror sticking with the program and waiting for his turn. It looks like we have another fine team this year . Good luck to the Men in Blue and have a great season. Anytime we beat MD in any sport it's a great day in Lancerland.

Just Sayin: If any school belongs under the "...and more," it's Northridge, which I don't think has had a winning season in at least five years or maybe more. I think Fullerton has accomplished a bit more. :)

maybe CSUF falls under the "...and more" :)

Amat Rocks: Well, if Fullerton coaches are not there, than that says it all. But seriously, I'll be at the game on Wednesday to check your Lancers out.

Sevey(sp?) is a Junior catcher turned Third basemen. What can you say...The Kid's got game! Great job Sevey, keep it up! The Lancer rotation is going to be just fine for those who are wondering. Paez, McNitt and Zamora look like they will be able to handle the hurling duties this year. The Lancers still have McCraney(sp?)and Rio to run out to the bump should the need arise. This team is looking very, very good. Go Lancers!

I like what I see with this Amat team but it is very early to predict at this point. Capo Valley will be a big test but as the saying goes it is not how you start the race it is how you finish the race. Injuries play a big part in a teams success. Lets hope Amat stays healthy all season because this could be something special should they jell the right way. Lots of talent on this Amat team. Cant wait for the April 28th vs So. Hills. This game may be bigger then the Northview game a few years back.

What a lineup. This is the best amat i have seen . When your 8 hitter hits 3 home runs on the road aganist a div 1 school look out.
