Wednesday’s wrap-up: Glendora playing host Arcadia for tourney title; Amat, South Hills get wins in Classic; Damien wins tourney opener

Thursday Update: Bishop Amat closed the Classic with a 9-5 victory over Salpointe to finish 3-1, and South Hills bounced back from an 0-2 start to win its final two games, beating Mater Dei 4-3 with Cody Doyle singling home Dominick Martinez in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie. Our locals went 5-3 and 4-0 the last two days, showing once again the SGV can play with anyone. Also, Damien beat West Covina 12-4 and needs a win over Lakeside on Friday at 3 p.m., to advance to Saturday’s Chino High tournament finale.

I’m starting to wonder if the mega game of the year later this month between South Hills and Bishop Amat at Mt. SAC shouldn’t of been Glendora vs. Bishop Amat. At this point, they’re clearly the best two teams and would love to watch them in a quick three-game series, to see which pitching staff would win out. Amat has the better hitting and probably the best No. 1 in Paez, but the Tartans have a staff capable of shutting you down three straight. Too bad the Lancers skipped the Glendora tourney, would have been a great final.

Glendora 5, St. Francis 4: Glendora High School’s Joseph Winterburn didn’t have time to hang his head after giving up two runs in the seventh, an inning in which the Tartans saw their two-run lead dissipate. In the eighth, Winterburn redeemed himself when he knocked in the winning run with the bases loaded on a single to center to lead Glendora to a 5-4 win over St. Francis on Wednesday in the final day of pool play in the Apache Invitational at Arcadia High.

National Classic: Bishop Amat and South Hills both won on Wednesday. Paul Paez threw another gem, a two-hitter in a 2-0 win over Peninsula. After losing their first two games, South Hills bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Cottonwood behind freshman pitcher Adrian De Horta, who also threw a two-hitter and struck out six.

Chino Tournament: West Covina couldn’t overcome its miscuses, losing to Maranatha, losing 4-3 in the Chino Tournament.
