Baseball/Softball: Bonita gets a Daily Double with wins in baseball and softball; Amat softball comes up short

Above: Anthony Ramos connects for a single during Thursday’s Miramonte League game at Charter Oak. The Bearcats took control of the league title race with a 13-4 victory.

Thursday was a solid day for Bonita High School.
The Bearcats, getting three RBIs from Anthony Ramos and two each from Evan Highley and Mark Lindsay, along with six errors from host Charter Oak, routed the Chargers, 13-4, to take command of the Miramonte League race.
The softball team bested Los Altos, 3-1. Chloe Wurst scattered seven hits with six strikeouts to lead the Bearcats, who also received a two-run double by Clarice Spathias in the win.
In the other big game of the day, Bishop Amat’s softball team came up short, losing at home to St. Joseph, 5-4, in a battle for first place in the Del Rey League.

Bonita baseball coach John Knott: “Charter Oak has pretty much dominated this league for the last (decade). We haven’t done very well at their place since I’ve been head coach. I’ll take a win over them anytime. It’s special for me to be part of win here, at their place.”
Charter Oak coach Tom Quinley: “If people would have paid to see this game, we would have refunded their money. Bonita just gave us an old-fashioned whooping and they are just better than us this year.”
Bonita softball player Chloe Wurst: “It’s all about the defense. I’m nothing without my defense. I gave it the best I could. You can’t always bring it every time.”
Los Altos softball coach Felipe Aguilar: “Our girls battled all seven innings. We had our opportunities, but sometimes in softball the ball bounces certain ways. That line drive (to Wurst) was the biggest play of the game. Today, we hit the ball, but they ended making some big plays.”
Bishop Amat softball coach Jesse Mendez: “When it starts going your way, good things happen. We were down and battled back. We’re getting better and these girls are working hard and we hit the ball well today.”

This should be quite a battle between 2 excellent freshmen pitchers! Both Rodriguez of St. Josephs and Anguiano from Amat have been dominant in league play. Now that the Amat bats have started to show life, this should be a great game. Lets go Lady Lancers!

The MaxPrep schedule has an extra game at Charter Oak in the mix and the dates are wrong. If you are going to watch the C O – BoHi Varsity game go to Charter Oak.

The Frosh and the JV’s are playing in La Verne.

I know this blog is for Varsity teams, but I wanted to comment that all three levels of Bonita’s baseball teams are having a GREAT season…Congrats to them all!

Bonita is playing really well, hopefully the bats will stay alive. They might want to reconsider playing the JV catcher who has a blazing bat! MW had two more doubles yesterday, and a long skyrocketed homerun on Tuesday. CW has strong command of her pitches and she moves the ball around really well. It will be interesting to see if they can make a run

The reality is I’ve noticed that Bonita’s programs in the three major sports appear to be on a major upswing, not to mention girls volleyball. They must have some talented girl athletes in La Verne. Congrats students and coaches. P.S. I don’t intentionally omit the other teams of Bonita,/ it’s just that very little if anything at all is written about them.(golf,swimming,track,wrestling,etc.)No scores, standings, nothing for all the schools in the valley in the other sports.

Where is “Clueless?” Oh Where, Oh where can he be. Report yourself Clueless. I would really like to listen to your rationale this week.

    fred meally,
It’s great that you have such a high opinion of MW. And it is great that she is doing so well for Bonita’s J.V. but anyone who knows anything about high school softball knows there is a big difference between J.V. pitching and Varsity pitching. The problem that MW faces is there are already 3 girls on varsity that can catch and if she was better that any of them, the coach would have put her on varsity to begin with. How is she going to feel if she goes up to varsity and sits the bench? What good is that going to do her or the varsity. And by the way, all 3 of those other catcher’s will be back next year too!

  • the real Dori

Don’t post comments under my name!! use your own name and keep me out!!! The coach will do what he feels is best for the team, period!!

Its the JV coaches job to tell the Varsity coach about a player who is ready to move up I’m pretty sure KC will bring her up for CIF but that’s not a for sure she will even play. Mom and Dad need to be patient it will come.

As we wind down the back stretch of league lets take a look at the NON league games left FOR THE TOP 4 as they get ready for CIF.

Still play Loyola Div II, and South Hills Div III champs.

No non league games but face Damien twice this week

still face AMAT, and DIV II # 8 Alemany( who just beat Crespi)

BONITA # 5 in CIF, and NEW # 1 MAX PREPS
Faces # 7 Walnut n DIV III rankings non league.

MAX PREPS rankings came out last night, and CIF come out tonight.

I see FOUR damn good teams and with Bonita & South Hills in same division, we can actually see THREE CIF champions come the first Saturady of JUNE!
