Breaking News: South Hills freshman running back Aarel Vaughns checks out of school

South Hills’ Aarel Vaughns, the freshman brother of senior Geoffrey Vaughns — the San Antonio League MVP and a first team All-CIF Southeast Division selection, checked out of South Hills last week according to sources.

Aarel Vaughns is a running back and was the MVP of the Huskies’ freshman team who later joined the varsity roster for the playoffs. The speculation is that the younger Vaughns will wind up at Charter Oak, who desperately needs a running back, or Bishop Amat. Wherever Vaughns winds up, he has a good chance of playing because South Hills traditionally has let players transfer, opting not to challenge for “athletically motivated” reasons, which is what allowed Travis Santiago to go to Charter Oak and most recently junior QB Brock Booth to Bishop Amat. For those wondering where this leaves the Huskies, they still are solid in both positions, returning QB Vincent Hernandez and running back Jamel Hart, who will only be juniors.

All these transfers, its got to be for academic reasons right? The grass is not always greener. The parents are not setting good examples at all, when theres competition, we’ll transfer. Good luck.

  • ?

Do transfers to Amat have to take entrance exams like the incoming freshmen?

  • The Exodus Begins!

Betcha $100 he ends up at Amat!

    Gotta love Private school recruiting!

  • interesting

I think that vaughns and Rufus are cousins

  • bruiser

Calling all RB’s…SD needs a running back. Please send all letters of interest to the athletic office.

  • USC FAN

Dont be a hater because you couldnt afford private school!

  • SGV

What about San Dimas? The word is that they need a RB. Seems like the kid could really excel there, maybe start for 3 years. Rack up 5,000 yrds for a career. Have a shot at a ring every year. The younger Rufus checked in already, maybe this kid is next.

  • I wonder

Are the rumors on the blog true? Did a certain travel ball coach, who allegedly coaches freshmen football at Amat, recruit Vaughns? If Vaughns ends up at Amat this might be something to investigate. I suggest Hags re-evaluate those in his program because loose lips sink ships!!!

    BREAKING NEWS:

Fred’s a pretty good indoor soccer player!

  • FredJ

C’mon, my teammates carry me :) , I miss the days when I could run on all night and play game after game … it’s tough getting old and outta shape.

  • who cares

good riddance Vaughns family — south hills won’t miss the prima donna’s

  • Please!!!!!!!!

South Hills has accepted Amat transfers most recently Reyes Barreras and Dorian Wells.

Charter Oak has had a couple.

Let’s not get into how many Los Altos transfers.

The Point is Amat has had transfers, wished them well and kept rolling.

Now that they are getting transfers, internet dorks are getting mad? Quit hiding behind your mommy’s computers Trekkies! Go back to your world of Warcraft and level up to 990 evil magician status. Put down the baby oil and get a life

  • Bishop Amat is the School of Choice

And the mass exodus continues at South Hills. Check the writing on the walls boys because where there is smoke there’s fire and I am sure there are going to be two sides to this story. Bishop Amat will welcome you with open arms..!

  • jesusjr23

LOL… Yea it really sucks getting old and outta shape, I used to play 3 games Saturday and 4 games Sunday. Now, I can barely play one on each day, it’s SAD.

Oh BTW, you asked me yesterday what’s wrong with SH? I don’t know exactly, but this makes you wonder. I don’t believe he would’ve made an impact until his JR year, but he will be missed. The parents and boys were nice people!

  • SHBaseball

Wait…is this the same kid that just quit the freshman baseball team at SH last week cause he was benched during one game for being lazy? yeap! it is!!! he’s at CO now, now amat. his big bro still at SH tho…he’s a sr, so why leave? good riddance. kids now adays think they are entitled to play, rather than earning it!

  • BigDog

    Fred
These kids and there family’s better be careful because big brother down in Los Alamitos is watching. To all kids and parents of these kids you think playing for a winning team is going to help you with a scholarship “WRONG” recruiters could care a less who you are playing for they can evaluate you if you play on a good team or a bad team. They don’t watch the scoreboard they watch the kid who they are recruiting ONLY. Parents don’t ruin your kids High School days by thinking he has to be with a winner.Recruiters will find your kid no matter where he is!!! EDUCATION FIRST

  • My Two Cents

If he goes to Charter Oak, he will be playing for a coach that has no experience playing high profile teams like REV and Corona Centennial. Trust me people, Lou Farrar will not be ready come playoff time. He knows this and this is why he fought so hard againts moving to the Inland. I am by no means a Bishop fan. BUT I am also realistic. If this kid has to choose between a Sierra team or BA, he should go to BA. At least they know what its like to play tough teams from the Pac-5 division and other state ranked teams. No team from the Sierra is ready for the Inland Division. And the horrible truth is that Bishop now has a better chance of winning the Pac-5 than anyone from the Sierra winning the Inland.

It pains me to admit this…but this is the truth

  • 30+ Years Competing @ Division One Level

    Phantom Fan:

    Cathedral Annual Tuition: $7,210

    Bishop Amat Tuition: $6,105

YEAH! Pay $1,100 MORE per month for a crazy commute to Los Angeles to attend an ALL BOYS school that can’t hold a candle to the history, tradition, and experience that is Amat football.

Thanks but no thanks! Recruit elsewhere…

  • LH?

Don’t be surprised if this kid ends up at La Habra.

  • Hawks

Ouch! Somebody tell me why the very same school that used to get every transfer including the Vaughns brothers and Booth are now losing them to other schools? Something is seriously going on and none of us know from the outside. What’s the inside scoop FredJ? Why are kids suddenly jumping ship? I don’t care what anybody says because for them to leave that has to reflect on someone or something period. Hey South Hills, how does it feel playing turnaround is fair game? Canada’s last year to you and Vaughn now leaving you. Wonder what Vaughn’s older brother would have to say about this? Good luck to everyone involved because times sure are charging fast around this Valley.

  • Phantom Fan

We have had 7 Alumni play in the NFL. We have 1 Olympic Gold Medalist Bob Mcmillan. All this with 500 Enrollment compared to Amat with 1200. You guys at Amat are living in the past. We at cathedral are living in the future. Go Phantoms

  • just sayin’

Phantom Fan – you don’t want to play that game on this blog. Many have tried, only to feel the wrath of “The List”.

  • Phantom Fan

You Get what You pay for Amat Fan. We have 720 Enrollment at Cathedral. Take away the Girls from Amat and the School is dead. In 1985 they tried to close us down because of prime property downtown. The strong Alumni that we have and the Great Alumni Association fought hard and beat the Catholic Archdioses the only School to do so. Today We Cathedral are Private not run by the Archdioses of Los Angeles unlike Bishop Amat. That’s why we charge 1100 more in tuition.

  • Chargers!

He registered at Charter Oak this week. Let’s see how long he lasts.

  • kumugin

How much of this current wave of transfers is due to the re-leaguing, particularly the shift of schools into the Inland Empire and all the time and travel that will impose on families of ESGV players? Or is it simply that kids want to play, or win, and believe their chances are greater somewhere else? As long as the rules allow it, why all the mindless jabbering about it? Quality coaching generally equals quality programs equals quality performance and that equals wins. Teams are built of parts. Those parts had better be replaceable or, at least, interchangeable. That is why the IE schools have an advantage over us. More parts.

  • Tech Support

Got to love Cathedral openly recruiting anybody they can. It’s why you have many wins, few CIF titles, and no respect.

  • OK Phantom

I’m going to take it easy on you.

I’ll just list our current NFL players.
    Ralph Brown(Arizona), Bryan Russel(Seattle), and Will Robinson(Washington)

  • Coach Cry Baby

When B. Amat was coached by Verti, and seven key players tranfered to area schools, why didn’t you complain about your wecomed football players!

  • you don’t seem to listen

really people, south hills will feel this loss the same way they felt booth — tomorrow they’ll be asking vaughs who?? prima donna’s

  • here we go…..

Cathedral is weak! They haven’t done anything in years. They are the top of the bottom. Amat is going to smash the phantoms on their own field. if we don’t beat them by 30 I’m gonna be pissed. You Phantoms have no idea what’s coming?

  • Phantom Fan

I am going to end this. cathedral already beat’s Amat in Basketball,Soccer,Vollyball,Track, and in football Amat is supposed to beat us Right? . We get Kids from all over and Our location is alot better than La Puente. Amat has kids coming from Chino Hills,Pomona, and Mission hills. I know 1 thing I bet you Amat fans pass by cathedral on your way to Dodger games. You guys Amat are not any Tuffer than serra that’s for sure. We get a few Transfers every season, but Amat sold their souls to the Evil one and are letting anybody in. That’s the only way Amat can win. You guys at Amat talk about Transfers and the School’s around you. You Guys are getting transfers all the time. Talk about Ethics.

  • ForAllToConsider

Lets take a look at what has happened to SH in the past few weeks.
    1. A QB who checks out to Amat after attending 3 other schools, (yes I will include Walnut) where he got very little playing time. Fault: dad, because he did not like the simple fact his son was not playing or may not be given a chance to play and Bogan would not let him on staff.
    2. A freshman checks out to CO. Fault: dad, because he did not like the fact he couldn’t run the coaching staff in baseball. Dad has a history of trying to control coaching staffs and this time it didnt work. As a football player his kids never came off the field.
So SH, you are better off without Dads trying to control what happens with there kids. Your school will be better off.

  • Great marketing plan

More info directly from Cathedrals website:
    http://cathedralhs.ca.campusgrid.net/home/General+Info/History+and+Mission+of+Cathedral+HS

“In light of the long term need to provide such an education to the students of the oldest and poorest parishes and neighborhoods of Los Angeles, the Board of Trustees and the school administration have developed plans to begin the rebuilding of the Cathedral campus to serve the needs of the today and tomorrow’s students. Cathedral High School has served the Church and the Los Angeles community for 78 years. Its current facilities are outmoded, worn out, and overcrowded….”

Now I definitely want to go LMFAO!

  • South Hills Exodus

    Hawks

A lot of people have complicated theories about why players are leaving South Hills but I think it’s a very simple matter…

Despite their annual talent (often showcased by our very own GURU) South Hills has lost to Diamond Ranch two years in a row. Diamond Ranch has been absolutely dominated by Bishop Amat over the same period.

Now South Hills will be forced to deal with teams with strong programs like Bishop Amat on a regular basis in the Inland Division.

Most parents are pretty smart. If your son has to play against Pac-5 like opponents….better send him to a Pac-5 school or send him to a school that does not play this type of competition.

We’ll see where this kid ends up…should be interesting but I do not blame his parents.

  • Blue Dawg

Phanthom Fan is dillusional. They may have beaten us once in a girls sports, but football is a man’s sport and we will school your wanna be Catholic private school in your backyard. I just hope you guys have enough seats to hold our fans. Expect over 2000 fans, we usually outnumber the home crowds.

  • Oh noooo…Not Again…Phantom?!?!?!

Cathedral asked for over $1000.00 more per month and “its current facilities are outmoded, worn out, and overcrowded….” YES LETS ALL GO TO CATHEDRAL TO HELP RENOVATE! LOL! GEEZUS!

Didn’t Bishop Amat BEAT Cathedral in Basketball this year???

Who is this Cathedral clown anYways? You guys ever noticed there is always a new guy that plays the “Anti-Amat” role every year? Get’s old doesn’t it???

I THINK PHANTOM NEEDS THE AMAT LIST! LOL!!!

  • Pasadena

    Aaren,
I hope u come bak to where it all started man – pasadena. open door for you at muir, open door for you at “H.S”

  • BTW PHANTOM….AMAT BEAT CATHEDRAL IN BASKETBALL 67-56…BOOM!

    YOU GUYS!

PHANTOM IS RIGHT! CATHEDRAL BEAT BISHOP AMAT 2X IN SOCCER THIS SEASON! OH NO!

THIS MEANS THAT BISHOP AMAT IS DOOMED WHEN THEY PLAY CATHEDRAL IN FOOTBALL!

BOOTH BETTER TRANSFER BACK TO SOUTH HILLS AND JAY ANDERSON SHOULD STICK TO BASEBALL! HAHA!

  • PROUD Pasadena Parent!!!

Why is there so much hype over a FRESHMAN transfer? I do find interesting though that two younger brothers of older brother success on the football field have chosen to leave their respected schools for whatever particular reason. San Dimas was a surprised recipient of Rufus’s brother and I wonder who will also be shocked to see Vaughn’s brother on their doorstep. Both names have a Pasadena past in connection so the story lines are intriguing for sure.

I personally respect any decision a family makes whether any of us feel the decision is good or bad because parents only do what they truly believe and think is best for their child like the Canada family did last year. Good luck to every family and every school including the schools they departed from.

  • SGV Football

I don’t think there is anything going on at South Hills. Vaughns most likely was told he will have a very good chance of running the ball this year at Charter Oak or where ever he is going and his dad did not want to wait another year or two for him to run the ball. South Hills does not lose much with him leaving they have bigger issues to tackle then to worry about a third or fourth string running back. I know one of the freshman coaches and he said he was not that good and he quit a few times in games where he was getting hit hard. Also he said he was not the TEAM MVP but another kid that ran the ball a quarter of the times Vaughns did and had at least as many yards and touchdowns as Vaughns.

South Hills will have a good team with Hart, Canada and Hernandez on offense and the big offensive and defensive lines. The question is how will the coaching staff get the kids ready and how will they react under pressure but South Hills should be in all of the games this year.

  • AMAT4LIFE

I talked to former Amat great Kory Minor (Daylon McCutcheon and Ralph Brown’s fomer teammate and friend) the other day. He said that “many” kids are interested in playing at Amat and are considering to transfer this year.. especially after winning the difficult Serra League last year.. He said there are kids who are still skeptics.. but if they win league again and are “competitive” in the PAC 5 playoffs this year the flood gates won’t be able to handle the excitment. I cant wait to see Amat field a 100 varsity kids again playing the best high school football players and coaches within Orange County, LA County, and the Long Beach area..

  • Have fun with the transfers

    Amat4life,

It isn’t going to happen; those days have come and are gone. It doesn’t matter how good Amat may get. The issues with players now a days they don’t want to wait till their senior year to see the lights. Let’s see you got an LA freshmen transfer and a south hills senior transfer. What do both these kids have in common, friends within the Bishop Amat coaching staff? They both transferred over with arrangements. The long term affects of these arrangements are going to be interesting. That other quarterback you have waiting in the wings, is he going to wait another year, or is he gone. Your coaching staff is playing with fire, once the transfer come in the backups will start transferring out.

The big picture you talk about tradition, well now it looks like that is out the window with these transfers with arrangements. This has already started a chain reaction within your program. Why do you think these Bishop Amat parents are coming on this blog and asking what position they play, like they did with the LA freshmen player? From what I hear the LA freshmen player isnt very happy over at Amat either, couldnt imagine why.

For the record I am 100% sure both families talked to the coaching staff before they transferred over to Bishop Amat.

  • seriously folks

Did I read this right? From the school website?

The majority of the students of Cathedral High School come from the oldest, poorest, and in many cases most violent neighborhoods of the city.

How do I get an application?

  • reality

The reality is that 15 year old children changing schools for whatever reason is not news even if it is for football. These children have no idea what they are doing at that age and hopefully are guided correctly by their folks.Lets blog about the teams as a whole and not give attention to children who have proved nothing as of yet, as they move from school to school.

  • Big Deal

    Reality,
    I agree 100%. People he’s only a freshmen.

  • Baseball NUT!

This kid has proved NOTHING at the top level. We can’t assume because his brother was MVP he will be too! Let him go where he wants.

As for these threads regarding Cathedral vs Amat its just stupid.
However I do see where some are saying kids are flocking to Amat again. First let me say ONE SOLID season does not mean the Lancers are back! I am a 82 grad from Amat so I follow them close like alot of you. HOWEVER, prior to this past season the Lancers wer 27-26 the prior FIVE years with ONE playoff win. BIG DEAL!

I have said this many times and will say again. Since the last Lancer football title in 95, LA, SH, CO have WON a combined THIRTEEN rings. I dont care if its Div 1 or 12. We can all say well transfer studs came in to those three schools. Well if thats the case then my Lancers should have WON at least 4 more rings before 95 AND 4 after.
Amat 4Life talks about Kory Minor. Here was a kid who barely got out of Amat at 19. YES he was a STUD, but this is what AMAT doesn’t need. He also mentioned three stud players. Brown from Monrovia, McCutcheon from Diamond Bar before moving, and Minor from La Verne directly across from Damien. Not exactly a kid from Willow, or Orange, Fairgrove, or Amar st. Heck go back to Pat Haden in 69 he lived IN South Hills district. This school has NO boundries, and it hels for sports no doubt about it. But it also has the BEST education PERIOD!

So yes WE/AMAT had a GOOD season but ONE season doesn’t mean were back! We need to go DEEP in CIF for the next five years and into the at least the FINALS twice before this old grad says were back to dominating. Sorry, its just MHO.

Let’s put this all into perspective.

The SHills 3rd string varsity QB transfers out and a small undersized freshman transfers out.

Not a major blow to the program.

Booth was behind Shirley and Herrera at QB.

Vaughs was a good player with good moves but quite small.

Wish them both well, but not a major loss to the SHills program. Hopefully boff of them will be SuperStars at their new schools.

We got Vaughns younger brother and we also have the Freshman QB who is like 6-1 or 6-2 if not taller. They are already working out with us and will be put to the test during summer to see if they can make a starting spot. One guy you keep over looking is our Long Beach Poly transfer…

This year will be fun Glendora I hope your ready… Week 0 the entire valley will be watching CO vs. Glendora hopefully we both can put on a good show.

    Dear Amat,

I’ve never been a huge fan of you guys as I think we would have a couple more league championships at my school if all our jr. all-american studs didn’t end up at your place.

That being said please destroy Cathedral for me? Thanks.

  • LA new rumor

Some players at Los Altos are going around saying that the frosh running back, #2, from Los Altos will be tranferring to Garfield in the summer. If so Los Altos will be even more in trouble! The two frosh MVPs of the past season transfering. First to bishop now to garfield. LA we need some help!!!

  • just play

Lets just concentrate on the kids that are not looking for a way out of the schools because their Daddies are not happy with their playing time or are blind to their real ability.. sound familiar #14 shhs

  • Not EVen Close !

Amat doesn’t provide the best education in the valley, Damien does. Hands down. Sorry but I know kids from both schools and their as different as a Cavalier and a BMW.

  • Just The Truth

Well everyone is tripping out on the transfers that have taken place. Well we have plenty of weapons still at South Hills. Vince Hernandez is a descent receiver and defensive back, also will most likely be the back up QB. There’s also Jamie Canada who has great hands and is a awesome RB. There’s also Jamiel Hart at RB and the list goes on….watch out for Senior Victor Martinez at QB. He’s floated around in the JV level for a couple of years and is looking really good out there. I hear he’s been training really hard…so don’t be surprised because the QB position is totally up for grabs. You wont see him at any local combines..come check out the spring training and see for yourself the strength that South Hills still has! Go HUSKIES! NICE….GO FOR IT!
