Kim Hernandez hit a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and send Bishop AmatHigh School to a 2-1 victory over rival St. Paul on Tuesday afternoon. The win improved Amat to 10-12 overall and kept its stranglehold on second place in the Del Rey League where the Lancers are 6-2. St. Paul fell to 14-9 overall and 3-4 in league.
“Being a senior, this was my second-to-last home game and I just wanted to pull through for my team,” Hernandez said. “I knew it was gone when I hit it. I felt the power. I was just thankful. My team is always there for me and they always pick me up, so it feels good to pick them up.
Freshman Sabrina Anguiano went the distance and recorded nine strikeouts to get the win. But it wasn’t without a little drama in the seventh before the Lancers celebrate.

West Covina 8, Rowland 1: West Covina High School looked to be in trouble, but the Bulldogs instead had visiting Rowland right where they wanted. Alyse Gutierrez had a fourth-inning grand slam and West Covina overcame a one-run deficit en route to an 8-1 victory over Rowland in a key San Antonio League softball game on Tuesday. The Bulldogs, who also received a home run from Yvette Cano and a solid effort in the circle from Dekota Monarrez, improved to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in league play.

Northview wins 7-2: Northview High School took over sole possession of first place in the Valle Vista League softball standings on Tuesday. The Vikings, with a team batting average of .447, struggled early but sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth inning. They scored four runs to break open a close game and knock off Covina 7-2. The win gave the Vikings (15-5, 9-1) a one-game lead over San Dimas and a 1 1/2-game lead over the Colts.
“I think it has something to do with this field,” Vikings coach Jeff Butler said. “I’ve been at Northview for six years and they always give us fits here. We have a great hitting team so I don’t know if it was butterflies or whatever because we knew the importance of the game.”

NV team’s batting average of .447 is fool’s gold. They are in the arguably weakest pitching league in the valley. They did see decent pitchers in the Santa Fe and Charter Oak games and they produced nothing.

  • softball dad

Corrspondingly, Amat’s batting average of .252 is low, but they have faced termendous pitching against Ettiwanda, Santa Margarita, Mater Dei, Los Alamitos, Santiago, Orange Lutheran, San Marino and Carson. The Lancers are on a roll and watch out for them in the playoffs!

Wow J, looks like you got the inside scoop! Were you in the dugout when their Coach said all of that? So are you saying that Seniors should never be sat? Senior Status = Starting Line-up…that doesn’t always work out especially if a coach bases his or her line-up on such things as work-ethic, talent, production, attitude, etc. Take care everyone!

NOT AT ALL ANONYMOUS, I DONT CARE IF YOUR A SENIOR OR FRESHMAN, BUT IF YOUR RETURN THE CORE OF YOUR TEAM BACK AND MAYBE NEED TO MOVE ONE OR TWO PLAYER’S TO GET YOU TO THE NEXT LEVEL, WHY WOULD YOU START TO BREAK THE WHOLE THING APART. AND YOU KNOW WHAT, WISH I WAS IN DUGOUT, AND BEFORE YOU ASK, NO I DONT HAVE A PLAYER ON THE SQUAD, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK THE PLAYERS… WHY FIX SOMTHING THAT IS NOT BROKEN……

  • HSballsucks!!!!!!!!!!1

Tired of high school ball please please end! these HS coaches are killing me. They don’t hit when your suppose to, they don’t run when your supposed to and worst of all they don’t bunt when your supposed to. How do they interview these guys?

J, they didn’t have the “core” of their team returning! Their starting Pitcher, SS, Third Baseman, Left Fielder and Center Fielder from last year GRADUATED! With 5 out of the 9 positions open…their coaches are going to need to move more than a couple people around! That’s more than half of the starting positions open for players to earn!

BOOYAH!! Well they told you, J! Sounds like you need to get your facts right before your trigger happy fingers start typing away.

Easy on the judging… let’s try to keep it positive for the girls. It’s soo easy to “coach” from the stands…

  • left 4 dead n sierra league

St. Lucy’s beat “21-3 Ayala” in the bottom of the 7th!!!! SL were trailing 3-1 going into the 7th and with two outs scored 3 runs to win their first Sierra League game. Great win Regents!!!!!

  • http://johndoe@yahoo.com AMAT insider.

From the inside i see that the coach gave up on the team, he said it was a re-building year. that sound like giving up on your team, what a coach!!!! If you look at max prep some of the girls that he is starting are batting under 200. Good job in making the line up coach. he was better off as an asst coach. Give it up Jesse.
