West Covina boys basketball coach Kurt Messick resigns, girls coach Manny Lopez takes over

West Covina High School boys basketball coach Kurt Messick resigned to spend more time with his family, Bulldogs athletic director Brian Murphy said. After replacing Gary Prestasaster, Messick went 29-51 in his three years at the helm, struggling to a 2-23 record this past season. West Covina girls coach Manny Lopez will take over the boys program after a 16-11 season with the Lady Bulldogs.

Lopez has a solid background in basketball, having been an assistant under Prestasaster, Baldwin Park’s Marc Hart and San Dimas’ Gary Jackson before taking over the Bulldogs girls program.
“I’m excited for him, I’ve known (Lopez) since high school,” Murphy said. “He’s a genuine nice guy who works hard as is a student of the game, he’ll do fine.”
Lopez’s girls varsity assistant Stefanie Foster has been promoted to the Bulldogs varsity head coach.
Foster played for Bonita and the University of La Verne.
“She was Manny’s assistant for three years,” Murphy said. “She knows her stuff.”
