Northview Tournament: Charter Oak's Santiago dominant in 3-0 victory over Los Altos

By Steve Ramirez, Staff Writer
COVINA - Los Altos High School had faced Charter Oak's Travis Santiago before, but that experience did little to help the Conquerors on Tuesday night.
The sophomore looked dominant, tossing a three-hitter and striking out nine, and the Chargers baseball team won the Northview Tournament for the second consecutive season with a 3-0 victory over Miramonte League rival Los Altos at Maverick Park.
Charter Oak, also getting three hits and an RBI from Joe Reynoso, improved to 9-5. Santiago and Reynoso were tournament co-MVPs.
Los Altos, getting two hits from Justin Zamano, slipped to 11-5. Both teams return to league play next week.
"It was a very good ball game," Charter Oak coach Tom Quinley said. "It was very well-pitched by both guys (Santiago and Los Altos' Joe Munoz).
"Travis finally got his complete game that he's been wanting. I can't say enough of the kid. He threw a heck of a game."
Munoz wasn't bad himself, giving up just three hits, but a little wildness and an error in the second inning keyed Charter Oak's victory.
Reynoso led off with a single, then Miles Meredith walked and Matt Santiago reached on a fielding error to load the bases.
Munoz then walked Tyler Bailey to force in a run before hitting Aaron Henry with two outs and the bases still loaded to make it 2-0.
"A couple of walks and a couple of pitches here or there and it's a different story," Los Altos coach Andrew Formano said. "You have to give credit to (Santiago). He was solid. We saw him (last Thursday), and it was pretty much the same thing."
Reynoso had an RBI single in the seventh to make it 3-0.
Los Altos had a chance to tie the score in its last at-bat in the seventh. Santiago, who threw 110 pitches, walked Mike Luna and Jayson Dela Pena with one out, but rather than get rattled he followed with back-to-back strikeouts of Cesar Saenz and Donovan Magallon to end it.
"I was getting tired," Santiago said, "but I fought through it. I just kept my composure and battled."

Damien wins again 10-4. Jr. LHP, Gonzales gets the win and pitches Damien into the finals of the Chino tournament. Six consecutive wins and three solid pitch performance from their pitch staff. Tomorrow Spartans play Maranatha for the championship @ 6pm @ Chino HS.
LA's program is garbage along with Wilson's end of story! CIF championship in 2 years!! You must be smoking that good stuff hugh LA Supporter?
Hey Worthless is Clueless,
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm not talking about any teams. Nor am I from Bonita. You morons conclude that I am from Bonita because I am exposing the weak aspects of the Northview Tournament. I am well aware of what transpires all over the SGV. Last year, when Northview jumped ship, I thought it was lame. It doesn't take a genius to recognize the fact that this tournament is garbage. Instead of wasting time defending your tournament rules, try investing some time thinking of ways to create more parity. Don't dilute your tournament by inviting inferior teams. If you can tell me a time when an undefeated team in tournament play finished in 3rd place I'll be real impressed.
By the way, does CO's 3 runs against Los Altos qualify them as an offensive juggernaut? Or perhaps their 2 runs against Walnut. Maybe you should conduct a little research before you accuse another team as having "No sticks." Compare their run totals. How's that for "Clueless?"
It is so much fun exposing the ignorance of myopic supporters. Idiots are easy to pick on.

Hey Worthless, Everybody knew the rules of the tourney before it began. If you're Bearcats didn't like them they could have gone elsewhere. Remember, Bonita gave up 7 runs to D. Bar while C.O. shut out an equally good team Walnut. By the way, Bonita lost in last years championship game of this same tournament to Charter Oak. How soon we forget. Don't worry it will all be over soon, as Bonita plays 2 games next week against a red hot C.O. Hey No Sticks, Didn't Bonita only beat NV 2-1 in there final game.
yea i agree i think he will transfer to LP or Workman before he goes to LA
LA Supporter,
Understanding the situation between LA and Wilson and the situation between Stark and Baltierra's family, not going to happen. Trust me on that one, Baltierra will never play at LA. Will never get approved by CIF, for many resons.
Hey Worthless is an idiot part II,
It is laughable how you allege that my comment "sounds stupid" considering that you lack interpretation skills. If possible, go find a semi-intelligent person and have them interpret my comments for you. If you succeed in finding that person, they will communicate to you that my criticism is directed strictly at the "insignificant", errrr "Northview Tournament." I never stated that I am from Bonita nor am I suggesting that CO and LA are unworthy teams. If you have any logical brain cells, you would utilize them to recognize the fact that the Northview Tournament is worse than the BCS. It has become equivalent to the NIT. If this tournament were not so diluted, perhaps the Northview nation would not put themselves in a position to hand out apologies while simultaneously handing out championship merchandise. Tell the masterminds of this aimless tournament to think it through more thoroughly or start making funeral arrangements for it.
Who knows, if this tournament sustains its existence, Northview might abandon ship again. You never know, they might receive an invitation from the World Baseball Classic. Maybe they'll have a hopeful shot at dethroning Japan.
For your info i never talked crap about him,,,i think he is legit,,,but a little bird told me that he is not to happy with good old stark over there at Wilson and by the way there record is showing i can see why....
LA Supporter,
That is a great one, you guys were talking mad crap about Baltierra a couple weeks ago. Now he is going to be your savor. I guess what you are saying is you can't win with what you got.
Dont worry Los Altos will win a CIF Championship in the next two years, when Baltierra transfers to LA next year and leaves crappy Wilson!!!
Damien won 6-1 vs Westminster HS today. Sr., LHP, Amhrein got the win. He went 5 innings and looked good. Next up, West Covina HS tomorrow at 3 pm, then Friday vs Lakeside HS. This is the Brian Hamilton Tourn. hosted by Chino HS. Spartans looking good.
Bonits 2-1
It’s kind of surprising to hear this since the Bonita crew have a lot bigger fish to fry than winning a ‘worthless Easter tournament’. I’m sure that Coach Knott is way more concerned about beating the Conqs or the Chargers when the win improves his finish in the Miramonte.
As for the tie-breaker, it’s as fair as you can make it for a tourney playing single round pool games. Almost everyone uses the over all record followed by head to head, runs allowed, runs scored formula for picking the teams for the championship and consolation games. Too bad having ten teams messed up the chances of having the thing finished cleanly.
Bonita’s focus, (OK, the kids on the team anyhow), needs now to be beating C O, Los Altos, Wilson and the Ranch, getting a great seed in the Playoffs and making a deep run. A young team, growing up quickly and playing with a lot of heart right now, BoHi is under a lot of observer’s radar.
Just where they ought to be.
Worthless ,
Obvioulsy, you're a Bonita homer and that's fine, but that area is a semi-intelligent area, so why do you sound so stupid? National Classic Invites don't come a year in advance, so you have to go about your business like normal with scheduling for the year ahead. You wouldn't know this because Bonita hasn't been invited to the Classic! South Hills and Amat had to turn down whatever tournament they were signed up for before they got official invite, so what's the difference? Why the major complaints now? Are you the coach or parent? Take it for what it's worth, you were down 8 runs at home vs. Diamond Bar and didn't have to face their stud. You came back (wouldn't have happened with Matthews on the mound) and got a good win. Shut your hole and enjoy the rest of the week.
Not saying that it's worthless, but the title doesn't mean what it should mean when you have an undefeated team take third place.
As a Bonita fan it annoys me that the tournament rules didn't make this a semi-final. But it's ok boys you have two more shots at both of them and I'm confident you'll keep rolling.
I have never seen tournament that has an unbeaten team playing for 3rd place. The system is a joke. Last year, if I recall correctly, Northview did not finish undefeated in the Glendora Tournament. If you lose, then you can't credibly complain about tie-breaking systems. But how the heck can you be invited to a tournament, win all your games, and get a pat on the back. Let me guess, uh, don't give up so many runs in a victorious effort against a quality Diamond Bar squad, right? "Sorry guys, Diamond Bar scored too many runs against you. Your pitching sucks."
Regarding Northview, ditching your own party for a better one is an insult to your own tournament. I would cancel my party before I crash another. My suggestion is, put the tournament out of its misery or hire some semi-intelligent people for planning purposes because its embarrassing. In addition, don't invite teams that could potentially meet in the title game and then immediately meet again twice more the following week.
Wait a minute.....I know....maybe next year, for the Northview tournament, instead of competing, every team can flip coins all the way to the championship. Maybe that will create more suspense.
Worthless is an idiot-
you could not of said it any better.
Worthless tournament-
your coach knew the rules, you finished behind the other two.So before popping off here check out the facts first.
Congrats on 3rd place- well done!!
Worthless,
Bonita didn't win games over Charter Oak and Los Altos in this tournament. Because they won league games last week doesn't mean anything in this tournament. Last year, in the Glendora Tournament your Bonita Bearcats lost to Northview in the tournament and still got in the championship game when both teams had identical records. Was that tournament worthless to you also? If I remember correctly, you guys were pounding your chests after that win. It's unfortunate to have 3 teams undefeated like this year, but it happens. Also, I think Northview was in the National Classic last year during spring break. What's your response now?
Worthless Tournament,
I love how insecure you men or woman can talk down to a team that just won a local baseball tournament and try to belittle their achievement. Please enlighten us and tell us what would be a worthy achievement in your eyes?
The Northview tournament finale between CO and LA is the most insignificant title game in the history of sports. What a joke! Another team also finishes undefeated, has already beaten both finalists, and ends up playing for a third place. Is it just me or is the Northview tournament a spring break exhibition? Interesting, last year, Northview didn't even participate in its own tournament. What does that say? Somebody should pull the plug on this tournament.
Who won between NV and Bonita yesterday?
Great job Charter Oak on winning the Northview Tournament for the 2nd consecutive year. Keep it going through League. Go for another CIF Title Quinley!
Congrats to the CO baseball team for taking the Northview tournament home for the second straight year.
Both these teams will finish 2/3 in league..
3-0 score against LA LOL
LA is right where they belong, fighting for 3rd place like every year in league. 11-5 Record is way overrated! they beat up on a bunnch of weak teams. Santiago is Legit, good thing LA will not have to face him next year. Coac does not get his team up for big games,
