Baseball: Northview claims fifth straight Valle Vista League title; Damien sweeps Diamond Bar to stay close to Glendora

Northview 13, San Dimas 7: Northview claimed its fifth consecutive league championship on Friday with a 13-7 victory over defending CIF champ San Dimas while the Saints secured their fifth consecutive runner-up finish in a league that has produced the past two CIF-SS Division 4 champions.

Damien 6, Diamond Bar 3: Damien High School remained in the chase for the Sierra League baseball title with a come- from-behind 6-4 victory over Diamond Bar on Friday afternoon. The Spartans trail Glendora by one game with two games left. Trailing 4-0 against Brahmas ace Kenny Mathews, the Spartans (17-5, 10-3) sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the top of the fifth to pull out the victory.

    Fred,

Dbar is two games behind Glendora. If they win today they, pull even with Damien, who holds the tie breaker, not even with Glendora.

  • Go Doyers

Hey… since when did Fernando Valenzuela join the Northview coaching staff? Que Guacho!

  • Aaron

Nothing like a back to back league championship to help dedicating the Tim Dewhurst Dugout at Bonita this week. Go Bearcats!

  • Nice Example

Really nice picture of a high school coach with a dip in. I hope the umpires don’t see this.

  • LetEmPlay

Valle Vista Champs 5 consecutive seasons!!!

    Northview 11
    San Dimas 7

Those Saints didn’t want to lay down but the Viking bats were too much today. Congratulations to both coaching staffs for running excellent programs to keep their boys in the running after losing so many seniors last season.

  • Spartan Fan

Damien gets a huge win over Diamond Bar!

  • Spiked

    Glendora 9-1 over Chino.

  • DamienScore

What a gem of a game today! Leyva starts Jr. LHP, Antonio Gonzales and he goes 7 innings to beat Dbar. Gonzales started a little shaky but settled down in the second and got stronger as the game went on. Mix good pitching with some great/timely hitting and the Spartans get the win. Jr. OF, Dorian Granados comes up with a big play to throw Matthews out from the OF to end the game. Go Spartans!

  • dbar

What was the Dbar Damien score? Who pitched?

  • DamienScore

Damien wins 6-4. Both teams Jr. lefties, Gonzales (Damien) & Mathews (Dbar), went the distance.

  • viking pride

Great job by the Vikings and way to come back strong after such a tough loss Wednesday. That is how champions are made. Another great coaching job done by Murph and staff. Murph – man you have to proud of the job you have done. Keep it going dude. Keep winning and doing great things with these kids and all the future Vikings. They are lucky to have you.

  • Damien Baseball Back On Track

Damien seems to be poised for a great playoff run. Good win for Gonzalez in the confidence department. The playoffs should be fun. Hopefully all SL teams do some damage. Two years ago no one was this excited about Damien Baseball but last year’s team showed heart and this year the players have continued to develop under Leyva’s direction. Hat’s off to Traver’s for making the move.

  • Deja Vu All Over Again?!?!?!

And So The Story Goes Again?!!?

Probably another first round playoff game against REV for DB (ask GB what that was like), but Chino Hills first.

Let’s see if they can finish the season on a “high note”!?!

Chino Hills will not be a pushover, but a late season spoiler again?!?!

Momentum at the end of the season going into the playoffs is very important on the confidence of any team.

Let’s see if the DB coaching staff can help develop any of that momentum from here on out!!!

    Good Luck Brahmas!!!

    On Track,

I’d have to agree. Yesterday was big confidence builder for Sparta. Leyva has done a great job of getting the boys ready. If the bats stay hot and the pitching keeps coming I think we are in for a deep run. I do believe that someone from the SL will make it to the semis again this year and we have a shot at doing that.

Fred did I miss something. Walnut beat the mighty South Hills baseball team 5 to 3. I see nothing about it. The Walnut pitcher Ruben don’t know his last name. Is the same pitcher that lost to SH 2 to 1. So I don’t want to hear that SH didn’t play thier best players agains him. I also would like to say great D from the SS Kenny. So Fred don’t be a hater on Walnut.

  • Damien Baseball’s on the rise !

Seen the freshmen team and they are loaded with athletes, absolutely loaded. Same goes for the JV team that continues to improve from last year. Leyva’s great skills is his take no nonsense approach to his lower level staffs and player selection at all levels. It’s his call and things are run his way, with great input and oversight.

I still would like to see more Damien Baseball T-shirts and caps out in public though. Let’s have some pride now that things are back on track. Helps with recruiting , lol.

  • Denell Chavira

    To Wal Fan;
The Pitcher who Pitch for Walnut against South Hills 5-3 His Name is RUBEN CHAVIRA left handed pitcher….Way to go Walnut….The SGV paper has a typo listed as Shavira…

  • SL Guy

No excuses now Fred! When the new rankings come out it should be Amat followed by Glendora and Damien; 1,2,3. Give the mighty SL their due.

  • Baseball NUT!

    SL Guy,

There should be NO problem having South Hills drop ONE spot, IF they lost today @ DIV II Alemany! If they WIN they probably stay put from beating a higher division on the road. Also losing to Walnut a second place league team won’t hurt much considering the Mustangs Tied Chino Hills, and Beat Diamond Bar once from your S.L

Also the S.L isn’t that mighty with ALL THREE Chino teams UNDER .500, and Diamond Bar will end with at least 10 losses, and is Glendora a one year wonder too? Remember they have averaged 10 losses the last few seasons. SO a DECENT league yes BUT HARDLY A POWER! I do give you credit for trying to sell the Sierra to those who are not big baseball followers.

  • sorry but…..

south hills didn’t lose against div 2 alemany

    win 18-5

  • SHDawgPound

    Walnut fans,
Before you go around and pound your chests, know 1 thing, you beat a freshman pitcher from SH after they had already won the league. So enjoy 2nd place and going 1 and done in the playoffs like you always do.

  • Baseball NUT!

After South Hills beat up on a DIV II team on the road, I think S.H SHOULD stay put!
Putting Glendora OR Damien ahead of the Huskies DOES have its merits, but also faults. We can take OUT leagues games for the TOP 4, as AMAT, SH. Damien, and Glendora are in leagues that have UNDERPERFORMED ALL YEAR! So then we go to Out of league.

AMAT has faced TOUGH competition and should be #1, here and in THE STATE!

SOUTH HILLS was in the CLASSIC, and faced TWO DIV I teams, TWO DIV II teams, and gave AMAT one of their two toughest games ( while allowing ONLY 3 hits)

GLENDORA HAS two LOSSES IN lEAGUE which is expected. BUT thier NON league outside of a DIV IV Northview team has been WEAK at best. Sure they clobbered Arcadia (who has 20 Wins) but they are not even ranked

DAMIEN has more losses than Glendora BUT their losses have been to solid teams outside of league ( REV, and Marathana)

I also beleive that Glendora is going balls out this season, and hoping for the best. Like I said in a earlier post they have averaged roughly 10 losses the past 4-5 years. They are loaded with Seniors, and have only 1 junior who plays everyday, compared to SOUTH HILLS who has a couple of BOTH sophmores, and juniors, and AMAT who will bring back the whole entire infield.

MY rankings for a TOP 5
    would be:

    AMAT
    SOUTH HILLS
    DAMIEN
    GLENDORA
    BONITA

Also would NOT have a problem either if Damien went to # 2. Just because someone has 20 victories so far does not mean they sould be # 1 and 2. I think Glendora HAS the pitching to go FAR in CIF, but they also NEED a VERY GOOD draw. El Toro, Chaminade, Santa Barbara, Los Osos, Crespi, REV, Foothill,Palos Verdes, Loyola, could all give them trouble. Guess after watching the TOP 5 in person at least twice each I am just NOT sold on the Tartans, But that doesn’t I am NOT rooting for them and I am hopeful ONE of our locals can bring home the DIV II banner.

  • socalbaseball fan

Watch out for CBL 3rd place team Yucaipa who is 20-6. Ace rhp Taijuan Walker is rounding into form and had a perfect game till the 6th inning vs AB Miller and gave up 2 bleeder hits. Some poor league champion will have to play the t-birds in the 1st round. Unfortunately I will miss the early cifss rounds as I am in France.
Try typing using a european keyboard sometime.

Hey Damien baseball on the rise..
“Seen the freshmen team and they are loaded with athletes, absolutely loaded”.???
If they are so great, then how come they went 0-3 against the GHS freshman team? That team must be really stacked. Don’t pick up the soap…

  • bball follower

Seen both play and the GHS team is pretty talented… Have about 5+ kids that should challenge for time/spots on the big squad next year.

Damien’s team definitely has some pretty good talent as well. They have a few players from establish Club organizations, Team Anderson, SGV Arsenal etc, as does GHS (I believe 2 of the top frosh players at GHS are Arsenal players as well).

Both schools should be able to field quality teams the next few years!

Too bad GHS is leaving the Sierra League though!
