Tribune Athlete of the year suggestions?
Last year San Dimas' Ariel Shore (soccer, softball) and South El Monte's Manny Acosta (football, basketball, baseball) were named the athletes of the year. Who should take that picture this year?

Hay Housewife dont talk about things that you have no clue about, Behr was a huge part in the huskies going to the quarter finals in football two years in a row, He led the Wrestling team to two straight CIF titles plus winning and individual CIF title along the way, He also then turned around and was a very big part in leading the Huskies to two CIF apperances and winning a CIF title in Baseball. All three sports anyone will tell you Behr was a huge factor not only on the field but with his leadership he is just an awesome kid. Dont try to run him down you should be pushing for him, if you live on Hollenbeck he is the kid next door to you,
Lots more to football than scoring td's. Dakota was a big part of the Huskies football success last season.
He was also one of the top pitchers on the baseball team and I'm sure Fred is connected enough on Cameron to get his stats. As pointed out, a top notch wrestler as well as a good kid.
I'm sure Behr is good but his baseball stats are secret and he had only four touchdowns last years and he didn't even play as a 10th grader like you said. So maybe he was a great wrestling champ but I never heard his name mentioned but wrstling isn't very popular so what are you saying? Just because he played three sports he is the best athlete? How about boys who played other unpopular sports like swimming and tennis and water polo? I bet there are lots of them with many letters to.
Behr is the only logical choice. Four CIF titles and in multiple sports.
You cant compare a two sport athlete to a Three sport athlete. Let alone one that has excelled in all three. Behr still deserves it.
I agree. Joe Herrera led the valley in tackles, had 1000+ all purpose yards, best batting avg. most hits and RBIs in the valley. He gets my vote.
Joseph Herrera Is by far the best hitter in the valley. Fact His numbers speak for themselves. He is also the best linebacker/runningback in the valley. BEST ATHLETE of the year award should be his.
Behr was not a varsity baseball player as a freshman.
He didn't play on the football team as a frosh either.
I think he had pretty good success as a wrestler that year.
As a soph he was under used in football and baseball. This made his dad very unhappy.
Behr is the only name I have seen year round for the last three years in the Tribune. He is gets my vote. Woodward is good but Behr I believe comes out ahead playing three sports for four years in row that is hard to do and take one heck of an athlete. Twelve letters speak for them self.
Woodward is the obvious choice, he also won athlete of the year at his school
Woodward is the obvious choice, he also won athlete of the year at his school
Dakota Behr of South Hills has to be considered. He has lettered all 4 years in 3 different sports. This year has been an outstanding year for Dakota and he was selected the "athlete of the year" at S.H.
No brainer, no sissy sports, It has to be Behr of South Hills, the kid is the real deal.
Fred
Football,Wrestling,Baseball
It has to be Dakota Behr from South Hills, 12 letters,12 league championships, 4 CIF rings from differents sports, all league in wrestling and baseball junior and senior year, all CIf in wrestling and baseball, best touchdown to reception ratio at South Hills and the list of awards goes on just like the one he just got at South Hills for Best Athlete of the class of 2010 that over all the studs at South Hills. To top it off he is a great kid and has a scholorship offers in all three sports.
Woody Woodward from glendora
4 years varsity baseball
2 soccer 2 football
won all 3 league titles his senior year
first team in baseball and soccer should havebeen all area
commited to ucsb for baseball
Aram, stop with the spring "flag football", er I mean spring football stories that leads into passing leagues. It is taking way too much space in the already limited prep sports baseball coverage during the playoffs. Spring football coverage is a joke!!!!!!You've got to be kidding Arasm and Freddy
Matt Stark
Now there is a name from the past.
He was good enough in Baseball to be named CO-MVP of the Sierra League (1983) with a Sophmore from Edgewood: Larry Gonzales
boy because its baseball season i forgot the stud of the year award.maybe not play, because he only plays football
adam muema i mispselled his last i think.
theres no better in sharp and athlete in sgv then adam, hands down,
might even carry it all year ,the award because of the jod the stud did,
i still say hes the next walter payton.
what was u.s.c. thinking not having adam at the backfield the next couple season,
my second vote behind evan highly would be adam for back to back cif champions c.o. chargers.see you in the pros adam.great kid.
People! Please remember the headline. PLAYER OF THE YEAR.
NOT player of THEIR H.S CAREERS. So take out thier junior, sophmore, and freshamn season, UNLESS they are NOT seniors, then its the year they are in. ONLY this year counts.
MY SELECTIONS AND AWARDS AND MINE ONLY:
MALE: TOUGH choices: It comes down to 3 MAYBE 4 guys. So the choice will be tough. In NO ORDER BEHR FROM SOUTH HILLS, JOHNSON & ANDERSON FROM AMAT. RUIZ is a possibility, as is Herrera
FEMALE Gomez from South Hills should be a shoo in, but who knows. IF the pitcher from Bonita wins a title she may get it!
COACH OF THE YEAR---> hands down is KNOTT from BONITA!
FALL TEAM OF THE YEAR---- CHARTER OAK FOOTBALL
SPRING TEAM OF THE YEAR---- AMAT BASEBALL ( regardless IF they win CIF. THAT competition in NON leagues puts them over any other team who may win CIF, like DAMIEN, GLENDORA, OR BONITA!
BEST FANS FOR FALL AT LOCATION--- AMAT FOTBALL
BEST FANS FOR SPRING AT LOCATION--- tie-- BONITA SOFTBALL, DAMIEN BASEBALL
BEST TEAM WITH RETURNING UNDERCLASSMAN FOR FALL------ WEST COVINA FOOTBALL
BEST TEAM WITH RETURNING UNDERCLASSMAN FOR SPRING-- three way tie, AMAT, S/H & BONITA BASEBALL.
BEST PLAYER RETURNING FOR FALL--- tie- JEFFERIES FROM GLENDORA, AND BALL FROM ROWLAND
BEST PLAYER RETURNING FROM SPRING---- RUIZ FROM AMAT.
BEST CHANTE TO REPEAT--- L.V LUTHERN HOOPS
MOST HATED SCHOOLS---- TIE AMAT & S/H ALL SPORTS
MOST PASSION FROM FANS AT LOCATION--- TIE AMAT FOOTBALL, NORTHVIEW WRESTLING
TEAMS WHO WILL SUPRISE NEXT SEASON:
FOOTBALL---> BONITA,
BASEBALL---> LOS ALTOS
The obvious choice is J Mac!!!!
His record speaks for itself. Check his stats in football, nobody else can say that they beat the powerhouse teams that his team did for the past 2 years in football as well as baseball!!
Specially in football, remember scout guru said the team would not win 3 games. His leadership on football and baseball is unbelievable.
Melinda Gomez from SHHS, two year first team all CIF in V-ball and basketball.....Avg. 21 points this season, 28, 29 and 32 in the playoffs(scored over 1800 points as a four year varsity player)Nominated McDonalds All American, SGV Tribune all area first team in both sports....and a soild performer in the classroom as well. Have to count Iffy Imoudo from SHHS too for Football and basketball. Both players were leaders and the difference for their teams in both of their respective sports. Remove them form the progarm and it chnges the whole season....
dj of bamat hes a stud in both football and track
I can't tell you how many times I hear parents say a certain player plays scared. Seems to be the air chair know it all cop out that most non football player dads rely on. I hear it all the time, "he's scared"!
Think of some thing more original.
chris adams, he single handedly gave the damien basketball program respect.
How about that dynamo from South Hills Melinda Gomez. Hasn't she had a great high school career and is getting her ride paid to play for LMU?
Lots of good athletes in the Valley for girls I have to go with Kylie Price at Bishop Amat. All CIF in track the last 3 years. This year 2 CIF individual titles. (4 in all including 1 her frosh year and 1 last year) All Del Rey league in Volleyball lead her team back in to the playoffs as a MB. (Lost to a great St. Lucy's team) Only a JR.
DW
get a clue
weird name seeing as you're submitting a loooooooong shot. POY and he doesn't play two sports? shuts down his senior year of baseball.
get a clue maybe you'd be better off saying props to a great kid and leave it at that.
mike was a solid player.
People from Bishop Amat keep bring Rio's name into this picture first off he is a sophomore and has very good numbers for a sophomore. Matt Stark over at LA in the 80’s batted over .500 his sophomore year and also played football, no award. His senior year batted over .750 and won the CIF championships with LA his junior and senior year at football, no player of the year. Matt was a way better football player than Rio ever will be. When you start talking player of the year sorry Rio's numbers aren't even in the ball park. Just in case that comment wasn't clear to you Rio's is an above average football player nothing more. That is why Booth is over at Bishop Amat, Rio's plays scared on defense, just image how he would play at the QB spot. Daddy doesn’t want his little boy to get hurt.
sgv30years.......go back 49 years, look at Frank O'Connors record when CIF had A AA AAA AAAA divisions only, Frankie won the AA chanpionship game in 68, the AAA game in 69 and lost in the AAAA semi's to Larson of Alhambra along the way he beat Scott McGregor of El Segundo who spent 11 years in Baltimore with the Orioles, Jim Slaton of Apple Valley the Brewers number 1 pick in 1970 and number 1 starter for a decade, Pill was outstanding but his numbers don't match O'Connor who 38-4 I believe in HS with an ERA just north of 1.1
MichaeL Gonzales (Glendora High School)
He was a 3 year letter winner in football and baseball.
Football: (Sr year) 1st team All C.I.F, 1st team All SGV. Defensive MVP of the Sierra League.
Baseball: (Jr year) All League. (Sr year) suffered a shoulder injury amd making a comback.
this is sad to watch a kid lose his Sr of baseball. he is a hard working young man and strives for the best.
He is my pick!
Whitey,
VERY good question. I may go as far as Paez, could be POY from the LA Times, OR ALL of the Southern section. But not sure about the record for our area.
I thik his MAIN competition for ALL of So. Cal will come from Cory Hahn (sp) from Mater Dei. He sits at 13-2 and a .089 ERA with a couple games remaining, BUT he is also hitting OVER .400
I think Knott is COY, for our tiny area and the guys will share between Paez, and Ruiz!
A couple of girls can win from Bonita, but I wouldn't be suprsied if the Rodriguez girl gets it from S/H based on what she had to endure.
Does anyone know how Cleveland High's Bret Saberhagen did in 80-81. I know he tossed a one hitter in the city finals~
Whit,
Have you ever heard of a guy named Mike Pill? You might want to look him up. He was hands down the best pitcher in SGV history. His Edgewood team had 4 or 5 guys who played professional baseball.
SGV430 Ouuuut!!!
No disrespect but who is Joseph Herrera?
Sorry but I've been on the blog from about day one and I've never heard his name, no disrespect but I don't know what school he's attending. How is that possible?
Where is Evan Highley going to play next year? Didn't know he was Don's kid. Didn't he play QB as well for a spell?
wooowww i cant believe he just said that he was the bestlinebacker in the valley SMH @ him haha prolly one of his family members
Rio could not hold Joe Herrera's Jock!
is this the Joseph Herrera that racked up those "impressive" numbers (800 "all-purpose yds"? - really?) against great competition like Western Christian, Ganesha, Bosco Tech, Bassett, etc?
and you had to post this a half dozen times in several places. Seriously?
Not. A. Chance.
here's a stat for you guys, if Amat wins out Paez will be at least 14-1, has anybody EVER matched that, in the small pond we call the SGV heck he just might pick up a win in relief next Tuesday(again) make it 15-1......look at their schedule they've played everybody
152 tackles 800 all purpose yards. 590 batting avg. best on base perc. 39 runs batted in. Joseph Herrera best athlete of the year...........
Joseph Herrera!
Joseph Herrera. Any coach in the valley would chose this kid than any other in the valley to be on the football field offense or defense and the baseball field at the plate or in the outfield than anyone else in the valley....
If a high school athlete lead the valley in tackles and in bating avg. should he be the best athlete of the year? Not to metion he got all league running back
linebacker outfielder!
Well I have been to most of the Amat football games. Hands down that team was being ran by JMAC. Not Rio. Rio just followed the instructions by the leader which was Jerry Mac. He has lead this football team to great wins. Now for baseball well just go back a couple of years back. He was the starting catcher and won a CIF title. First team etc. Last year JMAC. also started every game and caught the two top pitchers and needless to say he won POY last year several other awards. Now for the present well his story is still be written hopefully add another CIF title this year and yes this Amat team is being lead by the Animal and JMAC point blank. So with no doubt JMAC is the athlete of the year. No question about that......
Joseph Herrera. Best linebacker in the valley. Plus he is the best hitter in the valley and the purely there is no better athlete than him.
Joseph Herrera led the valley in tackles and had the best batting avg. in the valley plus best on base percentage in the valley, and is a junior
joseph herrera
DARIAN JOHNSON BISHOP AMAT Athlete of the year
sticking with evan highley binita bearcats.impact player, goes both ways on football field all-cif this year and will repeat honor as the bearcat first basemen on the baseball field, one of the best all around defences 1 sack in the state, thats right maybe in all of h.s. the kid gets to ball steve garvey wishes he could of,and stoled 8 sb.hit 435 with a hand full of hr and aroud 30 rbi and will lead us thru cif with his abilitys not his school colors.hes a senior earn all he can, this award should hands down honor the senior athelete.underclassmen if your all that then do it your senior yearand take home the gold,
and i would second d=behr and jerry mac both solid young men it,good luck in life where it may take you.
go bearcats
Dakota behr. Look at what he's done. Football wrestling and baseball. He would get my vote
I really like this voting by blog thing but we need to somehow weigh the count to allow for all of the Bishop Amat fanatics who post here.
But then, maybe not. Rio and JMac tie, hook 'em up again next year.
WHOOOOOOO!
I see the Rio angle but let's not get silly. POY in Baseball, okay...got that but Football as well? There might be the problem of Rio not being around when Jerry Mac burst on the scene in his magical comeback for the ages last year. Last year Jerry Mac was pretty special but this year he was flat out a stud with an outrageous overall career record of wins, comeback and finishing with a League Title, something few thought was possible before the season started. Hard to argue DJ's impact but someone handles the Baseball team when the Animal isn't pitching. Let me give this some thougth but early on it's Jerry Mac.
I think Jerry Mac is a great choice what a player this kid has been for Amat. We will miss you Jerry Mac... Rio is as good as they get.. Amat can get some very good athletes.. Lots of other very good athletes in the sgv ....Congrats to all..
Rio Ruiz was not all CIF in football
Darian Johnson.......gamebreaker in football, CIF Masters Meet in track, enough said
Darien Johnsoon football/track
all cif in both and will be participating friday in the masters meet
Sophomore Nick Hynes of Covina. 2 years of varsity football and baseball. Is best known for baseball.
Fred,
Don't be afraid to be bold. Choose an underclassmen if he is deserving. Rio Ruiz is hands down the best athlete in the SGV.
Jerry Mac in a landslide.
I hate being right so often.
Engineered the greatest program turn around in recent memory, handles pitchers with the best of them. No ego, all leadership, all the time. There are flashier players but few role model leaders like Jerry Mac.
It has got to be Dakota Behr. Lettered in 3 sports for 4 years and has 4 rings. Had 6 or 7 touchdown catches in football. Placed 4th in CIF for wrestling and had 7 or 8 wins as a pitcher.
Rio Ruiz of Amat- Athlete of the year. All CIF football and All CIF baseball and will probably be named ALL NATIONAL.
Ariana Domasin from Bonita. Lettered in basketball and track, also field hockey, but didn't play field hockey this year.
