Baseball: South Hills-Northview will meet next season under the lights; "New" SGV baseball tournament in the early stages

| | Comments (24) |

Since last week's Bishop Amat 2-1 victory over South Hills in front of more than 1,200 folks under the lights at Mt. San Antonio College, some interesting things have happened. South Hills and Northview have agreed to meet on a Friday night next year, as well as Bishop Amat and South Hills meeting again, and we hear their could be more nonleague "mega matchups" under the lights next season. And there's more, Bonita and Northview are teaming together to create a San Gabriel Valley tournament at the beginning of the season, one that could match the best teams of the SGV with several of the best from the Inland Empire. They're hoping for a quality 32 team tournament with several commits already. Locally, South Hills, Damien, Bonita, Northview, Los Altos and Covina are in. Redlands East Valley, Yucaipa, Rancho Cucamonga and Los Osos are committed from the IE. This has all the making of something great, with organizers hoping first-round games could match SGV teams against I.E. teams so we could keep a count of how the two areas perform against each other. It's a wonderful idea, and a great way to start the year. Team interested in participating (hint, hint Bishop Amat) should contact John Knott at Bonita or Darren Murphy at Northview.

On a side note: Yes, this tournament is scheduled the same week as the Glendora tournament, which obviously will affect it now that Northview, Bonita, Alta Loma as well as Bishop Amat will not attend. Sort of a good news, bad news, I know, but I like the idea of a huge area tournament.

Henderson field puts fear in the pitchers. Either the pitch gets good location or its gone. Don't fear the short porch.

If they do this, make sure that there are lighted fields that can bring in the fans. What helped make the sh amat game so awesome was a game under the lights for the kids.

I will never forget the amat northview game under the lights 2 years ago.

So knott and murphy make sure u get lights.

Loyalty,

Not a harp on the Glendora tourney, but take a look at who was actualy in it.

Without AMAT it lagged a so called super power. ( However NOT even they knew the Lancers would be this strong) Sure Northview, D.B, and Bonita were involved, but again nobody really KNEW what to expect with those teams this year. Granted they all turned out OK, but look at the Don Lugo Tournment. They had San Dimas, and South Hills. BOTH CIF champions. Shouldn't those teams be in a local tourney? I mean SH has been comitted becasue they were champions, or in the finals the last two years. But where there is a will there is a way! Also Glendora can no longer put together a field for thier tournemenet knowing 90% that they will will it!

I would scrap the Glendora tournment for ONE year join the SGV tourney, and see what happens. They can alway go back.

I mean who wouldn't want the Tartans involved with the best of the valley next season?

I would think Diamond Bar will most likely continue with the Loara tournament in which they have played for many years. Former AD Ray Moore was from Loara and helped run the tournament. Advantage of the Loara tournament you get to play good teams from the OC and Long Beach area. Moore has Vista Murietta playing the past several years.
Another good concept would be having a sierra-baseline league challange where you match the best teams vs each other. This year you could have had Glendora vs Upland,Damien vs Los Osos,Diamond Bar vs Rancho Cucamonga and could have been played at minor league stadium in Rancho Cucamonga.

It was asked earlier...

What happens to the Glendora tourney? Those people have been putting on a quality tourney for many years. Why not get all these teams to take part in that tourney or as mentioned earlier, hold this during Easter break.

Enough about the small field etc... that's an easy out for someone to say that.

Sort of disappointed that Fred J and/or the Trib doesn't try to make it work..

Just me 2cents...

As much we ie... me and most others would like AMAT in this tourney IF it transpires, I think the Lancers will FINALLY move up to DIV I. Also I think AMAT heads to FLORIDA for a tourney next season. Just a hunch!

Northview beats south hills. said:

Northview will be a tough team to beat next yr, all but 3returning next yr. also returning the hard throwing 6-4 Xavier Martinez.

-Northview over South Hills is my prediction for
next yr.

Heard from a source(wink wink)nieto is already a NO on the tournament. Not a knock or anything like that towards him.....but man up get in the tournament. Murphy and Knott(especially Murphy) made this tournament for a reason.
Come on Andy.....

I would prefer the tournament to be an all SGV/IE rather than include OC teams. The OC teams will be playing in either the long standing Loara tournament or the Newport Elks.
You could bring in teams from the Temecula/Murrieta area along with strong programs in Riverside like Arlington,Riverside Poly,Norco, ect. From SB area you can include Cajon,San Gorgonio,Redlands who may be the CBL favorite next year. Redlands has the 2 best freshmen in the CBL in P Angel Landazuri who is 6-2 and CF Sean Smith. 3 sophs start for the terriers.
Yucaipa will be in a rebuilding mode next year. REV returns 4 starters next year.

Alright, think about it this way 16 teams from the SGV(8 from ESGV and 8 from WSGV), 6 from the IE, 4 from the OC, and 4 from the City, 2 from San Diego.

That way it is an SGV tournament but you have half of the participants from outside the SGV.

What about Charter Oak baseball team? Include the Chargers because I know for certain several teams that would embrace the opportunity to play them head to head!

Have the game anywhere but Mt Sac! That place is very nice, but way to small for the crowds.

I mentioned this in another thread right after the great matchup of last week.

I also noted like Amat 73 that the O.C NEEDS to be involved. At least 4 teams, two public say Beckamn, and Mission Viejo as well as two private say M.D, and O LU. They should also try a few teams up the coast, like Santa Barbara, Camarillo among others. And lets not forget one or two city boys like Chatsworth, and Taft. It will creat a AMAZING scenario, and generate major PUB!
ALSO a team or two from Arizona, or Hawaii can be considered.

ALSO:

IF a tournament is held, and procedes go to a charitable cause. I have TWO bats and ONE I will be willing to auction/raffle off and give 50% of the money to the charity. IE..... Domestic abuse, or prostate cancer research.

The bat is certified as authentic, as has a value of about $3,500.00 TODAY. It will only go higher, and experts have told me it COULD reach $ 10,000 in about 10 years, and as HIGH as $25,000 when a FEW are decesed. On the bat are autographs OF
Puljos, A-Rod, Vlad, Bonds, Manny, and Griffey!
SIX FUTURE H.O.F's and ALL SIX SHOULD will have OVER 500 HR's, and ALL but Vlad Guererro SHOULD have OVER 600!

Fred,

You know Nieto has the biggest ego in the area. He will NEVER enter a tourney with Murphy in charge.

Maybe it can replace the old Elks tournament held at Ralph Welch Park in Pomona,CA. This tourney was held during Ester vacation. I know many districts have changed their vacation week. This tourney had the best of the best playing from far and wide. Many MLB players and Hall of Famers. 32 of the best teams battling it out for three days. It was fun to be apart of it as a player and coach. It would be great to see a tourney like this come back. There would be many scouts at these games with their radar guns and telling baseball stories.

Don't worry about West covina being there they have the worst baseball coaching staff ever. LOrenger QUIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first that comes to my mind is what will happen to the existing tournaments already played in the SGV. If indeed the SGV wants to establish a tournament of any type of stature it should also include teams of the OC . Too many teams from the SGV would just water the tourney down , Maybe 8 from SGV 8 /IE , 8 / OC with the rest from all areas to make the 32 teams . Have a part of the proceeds go to a worthy charitable cause ( it might make it easier to get teams )and at the same time start a great tourney that the SGV could be proud of also .Maybe Fred can get the Trib or parent news group to be the lead sponser since it will include many teams in the various papers areas (HINT,HINT,HINT). Let's also not forget the teams of west SGV as they also fall under the banner of the SGV even though that are not covered by the Trib they are still in the SGV.

I would question Amat and sh. Heard from a source AMAT will not play bush league sh....

Why? The programs are bigger than the coaches.

Fred,

You know Bishop Amat will never enter a tournament co-sponsored by Darren Murphy as long as Andy Nieto is in charge.

Bishop Amat is a tough one, especially if this new tournament is at the same time as the other big tournaments they play in against D1 competition. But it would be great to see Amat in this one for sure.
