Just Tribbin, the end is near ....

Anything and anyone you want to talk about. With baseball and softball playoffs starting next week, swimming ending this weekend and track getting ready for its biggest three weeks of the season, the end of another high school sports season is near. Which reminds me, any thoughts on the boys and girls athletes of the year? Or just talk about what you want, that's what Just Tribbin is for ...

Athletes of the year should excell in more than one sport and excell in the classroom as well. The athlete of the year is an athlete who makes their team better; meaning you subtract that player from the team and it changes the whole outcome of the season.....Two South Hills HS athletes in the top five for consideration should be Iffy Imudo (foothill/basketball)and Melinda Gomez (volleyball/basketball) Both have earned first team all CIF in their respective sports and both were solid anchors for each of their teams. On top of that, they maintained a high level of performance while excelling in the class room too.

They sure ignored Quartz Hill. Farce!

Jefferies is the man said:

I said this last year and again at the end of the season, Jefferies is a special, special talent. If I was him I would have transfered for sure after an awesome JV year. Seen him as a JV and said here he should have been a three year starter, yes even in front of QB K.

He's a winner and while Damien beat Glendora by finally playing their best four quarter game I don't believe they ever broke Jefferies. Few kids have that combination of size, speed, balance, vision and flat out arm strength in the clutch, he does. Some kids can throw the ball a country mile but a laser strike to win a game, not many.

Next year he'll get his due. Glendora blew a good thing when they had a shot at a full season with WG and Jefferies and possibly a CIF Championship. Few could have stopped that combination considering WG made CIF with QB K.

Great to see he's making a name for himself.

How far off can the CIF polls go? I have this vision of the voting coaches gathered at some pizza parlor; after everyone has sprung for a pitcher, they vote. I mean, you expect them to be a little off for the first few weeks but hey, they're seeding playoffs Monday.

While we are awaiting the final version I thought it might be fun to look at what the CIF-SS D3 Poll gave you this last week, just seven days before the deep thinkers in Los Alamitos announce the brackets. (The comments of course are strictly my own)

1)Beckman – Very solid, beat Pacifica and Northwood twice; other wins were vs pretty soft teams
2)Alhambra – Beat Arcadia, rest of the wins have been against tomato cans
3)South Hills – Very good team, probably the favorite; beat Mater Dei and Los Osos, won league
4)Hemet – Played a lot of really good teams, lost to all but El Segundo. Brett boys ask: Hemet?
5)Rancho Alamitos – GG League guys must be picking up the pizza tab for the vote meetings
6)Bonita – Solid, beat Diamond Bar, San Dimas and Northview, swept Charter Oak and Walnut
7)San Gorgonio – Beat Granite Hills, won the San Andreas
8)Culver City – Played well against football schools like Notre Dame and Oaks Christian
9)Ocean View – Best team in a soft Golden West league this year
10)Cal High – What happened to my homies this year? Napoleon's brother is the best of the DR

Part of what they missed:

The San Gabriel Valley League – Did CIF somehow sneak the SGL into another division? And, OK, I have a small bias having played against Jim Zorn a couple times in High School but ignoring Downey, Gahr, Paramount, and Warren is just criminal. At the least we are talking about schools that average 3800 kids, at the most we are talking about schools who have whipped teams like Hemet, Palm Desert, Moorpark, El Dorado, Servite, and Cypress … what are they thinking?

Charter Oak – Pretty much ignored all year, hilarious; beat Crescenta Valley, Northview, and Walnut, swept D Ranch and Los Altos. Same record as Cal Hi, played tougher opponents than two thirds of the teams named on the poll.

The San Andreas League – The poll picking bone heads have San G rated #7 in the poll but where are Cajon and Colton, they're both like 18-8.
