Mayfield girls volleyball coach fired after three straight CIF titles because, ummm, the school wants to go in a different direction?

Go ahead and try making sense of this ... Ernest Banaag, the most successful coach in Mayfield Senior School history, will not have his contract renewed for the 2010-11 school year. Banaag, in his four years at the parochial school, led the volleyball team to three consecutive CIF-Southern Section championships. Banaag said school officials said they wanted the program to "go in a different direction."

"That's all they would tell me," said Banaag, who coached the team for four years. "They wanted to go in a different direction. I don't know what direction winning CIF three years in a row is. If it was for due cause, then I would understand. If it was three losing seasons, I would be happy to go. I did not fulfill my duties. I asked them if they slept on it if it would change their minds and they said no."

Robledo's thoughts: The school should give an explanation. You have a coach publicly asking for one after winning three straight titles. I would understand if the coach went quietly because there was some inner turmoil with a student or teacher that they both didn't want going public, but for him to be let go out of the blue after everything he has done for the school doesn't make sense. It's not fair to the coach because of the way he was fired, it makes it look like he's done something wrong that we don't know about. If he says he hasn't, and asks for an explanation, the school should do the responsible thing and give one.

Ernest, you should consider Diamond Ranch. They are apparently losing their head coach for the next school year and currently have very young teams for their girls and boys programs.

My daughter played Club ball for Ernest 4-5 years ago. He was one of the best coaches she has ever had. He treated the girls fairly and knew how to motivate his players to get the most out of them. She is still playing today and I can still say he is one of the best! Best of luck to you Ernest, you did not deserve this! It is just sad that in this day and age parents think they can rescue little Suzy out of every difficult situation in life.

Ernest respected the girls, parents and everyone around him. He coached my daughter a couple of years ago and I still see him now and he's as hospitable as ever. I remember they fired the coach at Los Altos last year and all for the same reason, you have those one or two parents that complain. It's really sad that school administrators can basically tell these parents to shut-up.

"a different direction" hummmm I guess you do get tired of wining...

VB Fan, I couldn't agree with you more and it's so irritating when schools allow these type of parents to run a program. However, it works both ways because it is just as irritating when a once good coach is left with absolute power and not have to answer to anyone and mediocrity becomes acceptable...Joe Pa is a perfect example of that. I think demanding more from your coach is acceptable AND needed many times but it comes at a price, just look at Pod over at Bonita, great guy, loved by the community and therefore if you ever speak out against him err his coaching, then you are the bad guy and everyone slams you, when in reality all you really want is NOT to settle for mediocrity. Having said all this, if your coach delivers and is not doing anything illegal or harmful then I as a parent I think you just have to roll with it even if it means your kid doesn't get to play. So if this coach is like you say and makes them all earn their spot and plays his best players then I would love for my kids to play for him even if they don't get enough playing time...

From what I hear Damien is starting a new Boys Volleyball team next year.

Might want to inquire. Get a fresh new start.

Too bad. Ernest is a great coach and it will be Mayfields loss and another school's gain. Unfortunate to have parents with money that rule the school and whine if there kids don't play. If the best players are on the court, it makes them all work harder to earn that spot. Teach your kids that life isn't easy because after all, Mom and Dad won't be there with their checkbook their whole life. Teach them work ethics and self respect.
