The debut of PrepXtra comes in the fall, which is 100 percent dedicated to prep football

No time to relax in the summer, over the next two months Aram, Steve and I will be working on PrepXtra, a magazine of 40-50 pages that will serve as our prep football preview instead of the traditional six-page newspaper special section that we produce every fall. This will be similar to our Rose Magazine and with the additional space we will be able to write a preview of every football team in the area, not just a league overview with a capsule. It’s the most ambitious project we’ve tried yet, which will include columns, features, and of course a cover story and picture that will set up the 2010 season. I’m taking suggestions on the cover shot and story, and any other items you would like to see in the magazine.

Last year’s cover: It was the “Drive for Five,” with Charter Oak coach Lou Farrar winning out and winning his fifth title. Now all three will be in the Sierra League. We’re taking suggestions for this year’s cover shot. Any thoughts?

    Freddie J,

Wow. 40-50 pages? Impressive. That’s a TON of work between now and August. Good luck.

Btw, will the PSN and WDN teams be covered, or is just for the Trib teams?

  • Aaron

Extremely good idea, it’s going to take a lot of work on yours guys part. Good thing you’ve got all summer.

  • FredJ

Stang Fan, yes, Miguel and Keith are doing the same for Pasadena, and the Whittier Daily News by Andrew Campa and Eric Terrazas will have one as well..

  • http://www.leaguelineup.com/miscinfo.asp?menuid=36&cmenuid=36&url=cochargers SGV FOOTBALL

    Fred,

Where do we sign up, I hope there will be a small charge for this magazine??? The cover story has to be Charter Oak, Glendora, Damien, South Hills and whoever else got moved into the Inland Division. Now its not only Bishop Amat who will be playing the nationally ranked in the playoffs. This is a great idea Fred.

  • DRanchhhh

In all honesty if it’s another Bishop Amat publication, who cares. Hope you guys are less biased in your reportings!!

  • high school watcher

    Fred,

Cover story should be did the CIF make the right move with all the changes made in leauges and divisions. All the questions will be answered in 2010. Something along those lines.

  • Jolly Rancher

that’s right – want no reminders of past two years butt-whuppins as you prepare for a third

  • Aaron

There’s no cover story SGV Football, preview of every single team in the coverage area. They should do a story with predictions, good ones and bad ones.

  • BA Blues

    DRanchhhh

When Diamond Ranch averages about 5,000+ fans at their home games, owns the top 5 football stories in the SGV Tribune (as in most clicked on), competes for 30+ years in the toughest division in California, beats Cal Preps #4 team in the nation, wins one of the most toughest leagues in the country,is regularly mentioned in the LA Times, beats Mater Dei twice in a row, etc, etc, etc…

On this day, DRanchhhh….Diamond Ranch and the rest of the SGV schools should get as much press as Bishop Amat.

Accomplishing great things makes a great program which makes great news. Your “being bias” comment truly shows how little you know about Bishop Amat and it’s history. You should respect your elders…especially those that kicked ur butt two years in a row.

Why does BA get so much press???? That’s easy…

Where was Diamond Ranch TWENTY years ago??? They did not exist…

Where was Bishop Amat TWENTY years ago? They were playing Esperanza, Carson, Mater Dei, Servite, Long Beach Poly, etc, etc, etc…Are you getting my point yet???

  • Norco

Very interesting…I look forward to it…How about including some of the Inland teams????

  • Don

Cover story? The new Hacienda League whose creation affects literally dozens of programs in three different Divisions has to be the choice.

Besides the obvious questions of how will Charter Oak and South Hills fare in the brave new decade, you can look at what the changes add or detract from the Mid Valley and ask how long the Section plans on allowing the Saints to dominate before they move them up to play with bigger schools as the did the Chargers and the Huskies.

Will their be any one team to emerge as dominant or will the Hacienda become like the old Sierra, a scramble to the finish with almost everyone still in the hunt as playoffs draw near. And the playoffs; emergent programs turning powerhouse in the Del Rio? Can the Suburban finish three teams like La Mirada, Mayfair, and Norwalk again? Will it be WesCo and La Mirada in the finals?

Or, you could go with Bogie on the SeaDoo again.

  • Wow seriously?

    BA Blues,

Hmm… Well Amat plays in toughest division because they CAN recruit. Public schools can’t. But CO still does anyway each and every year.

    Fred,

You should do a story on how tough Glendora’s schedule will be. If you take a look at it no doubt is it the toughest schedule in the SGV. Come on CO, Monrovia, West Covina, Lynwood, Canyon (Anaheim), along with the BaseLine league. Please name one team with a tougher overall schedule. And to go along with that schedule they are in division 2. Hopefully you give good press for the Baseline league this year. 5 teams in that league that are playoff worthy.

  • SGV FOOTBALL

    Wow seriously,

Are you serious! I love the CO recruits every year, too funny its not CO fault that players like to come play for a winning school. Also since you have seen the Glendora schedule can you post their schedule?

  • Norco

Well I respect your History through the years, the reality is BA has not been a factor in the PAC5 up until last year. Over the last seven years BA overall record is 44-36, you take away last years 10 win season and Amat is 500 ball club. So I guess thats why you hang your hat on ” we own the top 5 football stories in the SGV Tribune” Impressive I must say (rolls eyes)…” beats Cal Preps #4 team in the nation”…Ok because we all know Cal Preps is the supreme authority on HS rankings (thanks for the laugh)”is regularly mentioned in the LA Times”…your not serious are you? ” beats Mater Dei twice in a row” Ok…I will call your bullsh!t…BA the last seven years has played MD THREE times…in 09 BA won..in 05-& 04 BA LOST to MD by a combined score of 60-32….nice try clown meat…

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

    Not true, Norco

Amat walloped Mater Dei in 2005 — 28-7. I was there. Amat then missed the playoffs despite being in a three-way tie for the third in the Serra. It was Mater Dei’s only loss in league and the game wasn’t even as close as 28-7. Good Amat team. Sad to see them miss the dance. Jonthan Cornell, Carlton Fletcher, Danny Robles. Cool team.

  • amat sux

Norco. ha ha. also ask amat fan what has amat done the in playoffs recently. nothing

  • South Hills Huskies

Discuss the rewards and penalties being handed down from C.I.F. with some schools receiving relief as well as other schools moving to a level in spite of their success they still have no logical reason to be a part of the top tier division overall ie. South Hills, Damien, Chino Hills, Charter Oak, etc. You may also mention the rationale of geography, competitive equity, school enrollment, etc.

    Or…

An article detailing how and why the San Gabriel Valley has taken a back seat now in terms of athletes and programs to the Inland Empire and Orange County. What has lead to the demise of the San Gabriel Valley and why are the best athletes and schools no longer found closer to home.

  • Norco

    Aram…

You are correct…I look back at my notes and it was a 28-7 victory for Amat…

By the way Fred, whats going to happen when UCLA still loses the next two years to USC in football?

  • Ro

Bishop Amat does not have a chance this year in the Pac five but still will be the best in the valley.look what they did to diamond ranch last year.

  • BA Blues

    Norco

First of all, you just got schooled by Aram. That’s what you get for popping off, “clown meat!” LOL!

Second, you are always talking about how long it’s been that BA has been a factor, blah blah blah.

Here’s some other stats you should take a look like…

    # of Times Norco has Played the Following Schools:

    Long Beach Poly = 0
    Lakewood = 0
    Mission Viejo = 0
    Newport Harbor = 0
    Los Alamitos = 0
    Esperanza = 0
    St. Bonaventure = 0
    Hart = 0
    Edison = 0
    Dana Hills = 0
    Servite = 0
    Mater Dei = 0
    St. John Bosco = 0
    SO Notre Dame = 0
    Crespi = 0
    Serra = 0
    Oaks Christian = 0
    Loyola = 0
    Orange Lutheran = 0
Concord de La Salle = 0
    Santa Margarita = 0
    Tesoro = 0

Now I don’t know about you, but I do see a certain pattern…

  • DRanchhh

    BA Blues,

Everything you just said FURTHER justifies my comment. People like you. Your the type of FAN that causes people to dislike BA and it’s tradition. Your right numbnuts, not many of the schools were around 20 years ago, neither was the population that exists now. It’s like you guys are “FAME” whores at times. Who cares about 5000 fans?? Did that get you all a CIF game, no..no..no…better yet a RING? Everybody that comes on this blog is not a BA FAN. Most including myself respect what they have done in the PAST. Leave it at that. No need to gloat about recent activity. CO has accomplished more than BA alone in the last 5 years. And I repeat, if it is another publication that just reports on BA, no one wants to hear or read that mess every day. I’m JUST SAYIN’

  • just sayin’

but “Norco” has it on good authority that Norco called all of those schools and no one wants to play them. LMAO

Why not have a group photo of unsung players. Those guys who go to practice every day but will never get any press. Special teamers,2nd stringers etc. If not for these kids there would be no team.Ask the coaches for their input, put these guys in their team jerseys, print their names and just watch your mag. take off.

    Two words:

    Dennis Rufus

  • Hot Off The Press

X-head coach Felipe Aguilar of Los Altos is just a little pissed off with the way LA treated him. Felipe is in communication with Rowland High School to become the new quarterback coach. This has been validated by two different sources. The inside source stated he is the new quarterback coach at Rowland High School. Interesting how Felipe takes a job inside the Hacienda league, wonder why?

One of those sources also stated that Frankie Avalos is very unhappy at LA but LA has made it very clear they will stop any transfer attampt, via CIF.

  • SGV Fan

First of all its the “San Gabriel Valley” tribune not the press enterprise so wasting any ink on IE teams is a bad idea.

Second, we all love Bishop Amat and pull for them in the Pac 5, they are a private school and a collective home to all best talent in the valley. With that said, we can not hold them to the same standards as say Monrovia, San Dimas or Charer Oak these are public schools that do not do any reqruiting (okay maybe CO does a little) but they are a total different animal.

I think the front page should be a tribute to our defending CIF champs Charter Oak, San Dimas, La Habra, La Mirada and maybe Upland since they came in as an at large and ran the table in the playoffs.

    Just a thought…

  • DRanchhhh

    Respect this,

Get to the ship….then I will try!! DO what CO, SD, LM, LH, DR did and then talk. BLOG that!!

  • jcaz

Heres where it all seems to go down hill….

Brrrp-Ranch calls out Fred and says “its just going to be another BA publication”….

BA Blues responds with a few stats that Buurp-Ranch has trouble understanding, so…..

Norco chimes in with a request to the proverbial DJ (Fred) for news on schools that lye east of the Canadian rockies as opposed to the East San Gabriel valley (good try there, but really !)

Then, “Wow seriously” makes this claim that there is recruitment going on over at Amat, and thats why its not a level playing here, but then he qualifies that statement by saying that Charter Oak also recruits too, so thats I guess ?

SGV Football then throws his two cents in responds by saying its not their fault (Charter Oak) that there that good, and besides, every one wants to be a part of a winner right ? After all who cares it means moving across zip codes (illegally) because in the end, its all about getting a “good education right !!??”

    Ya right…

So…..Norco comes back with something now, because his manhood is being questioned by BA Blues. He decides to go all in, and throw down some heavy bacon with some serious schitz and giggles. He writes something back, but at this point, well, Ive already forgotten what it was, and anyway, who really cares, anyway ?

Ordinarily, that would be the end of things but, low and behold, good old Aram chimes in, and lays down some serious “wood” of his own by throwing down some smack at Norco.

He tells Norco to, shut the hell up by explaining to him that Amat did in fact do a slap down on Matter Dai not too long ago, and hes got the film to prove it !

Norco, to his credit, says, oh ya, wait a minute, by golly your right ! I can’t believe what an azz Ive just been, but hey, no bodys prefect right ?? In fact, Ive just checked my notes and low and behold, I was wrong all along (like he really has a book of notes stashed away somewhere under his bed).

Now….were still not done yet because……

BA blues come back with a few stat’s of his own (always a good idea because in the end, it always seems to baffle the crap out of these typs of people).

He make’s the point that the Norco football program has generally dogged most, it not all of the big boys up to now, and that the reality is that they still need to “grow a set” before they can lay claim to being on par with Amat.

Incredibly, Burrp-Ranch calls out all the faithful by saying “people like you” are the reasons why…..blah blah blah…..

At this point, I have to ask……

What exactly does he mean when he says “people like you ?” I mean, wasnt it he who stared this whole darn thing in the first place ?

Did I miss something here or what ???

    God, I love football season…..

  • AMAT 73

    Jcaz,
Like you say it’s all shitz and giggles. On another note maybe the cover of the magazine should be our three horsemen of SGV FOOTBALL Fred , Aram , and Steve. Easy way to settle the war of the cover. They are the ones who give us this outlet and who cover the teams so it only seems fitting. And with Fred on the cover at least AMAT has it’s representation. HA HA HA HA . Aram nice correction on the Norco blunder. Norco next time you want to slam AMAT take off the hater glasses and take a cleansing breath to make sure you get your facts straight and speaking of meat , how does that crow taste.

  • GameDAyatUSC

Already going at it and it’s ONLY JUNE! Going to be fun!

Here is a idea for the cover.

Put a CIF RING in the center. Then have 30-40 small logo’s of school’s ( or how many you can fit) with say a arrow or something facing toward the ring in the center, or poiting to the ring.

The caption: “It’s AUGUST, 60 teams from the SGV, ALL chasing the same goal! “The Ring”.

  • Baseball

Nice car. Is that what they give recruits at Charter Oak?

  • Norco

Posted by MD on OC Connect…pretty interesting..Top Programs in SS Edit | Reply

I have an old friend in Northern California who has a Master’s Degree in mathematics and a Bachelor’s in computer science. Several years ago, we put our heads together and came up with what we thought were reasonable criteria for determining the strongest high school football programs in the state. (Although he is a great high school football fan, he prefers De La Salle, and he would never think of posting on a public messageboard.)

He had some free time in the last week, so he ran the algorithm to determine which schools are currently the “strongest programs”. It takes some time to run, so only the Southern Section is currently completed. Just for the fun of it, here are the Top 50. Orange County teams are highlighted in red.

I`m still waiting for you to provide proof that Amat beats Mater Dei twice in a row. Also who brags about being in the paper and how many write ups a school has? I suggest you go back to holding the down markers on the sidelines, and making the team meals before games. As for getting schooled by Aram…lol…Are you serious? He corrected me…now in your world if you call that getting schooled well …I guess your whiter then I think you are….As for your list of schools you provided, thats all it is …its just a list…If you think Norco is not a HS school power in the Southern Section…then you don`t know your head from your @$$

  • GameDayatUSC

    Norco,

Interesting list! Curious on how he came away with this. What is the criteria? W/L’s, schedule, divisions, rings, non league games?
There are many on that list that have had ONE to THREE solid seasons in a row, but have usually been average at best for a LONGER period.

Lakewood as a example is in his top 15, yet outside of the past two years they have been average and either been one and done in CIF or have missed altogether. Another would be Oaks Christian. Very dominate in the lower divisions, but have yet to win it all up in the top divisions. Of course this is only their third year in DIV III.

These are just two examples. Many schools have been down and out for MORE than 4-5 seasons, outside of one year, so about 15-20 could be taken out.

IF IT was based it on scheduling tough NON league games, dominance for the past 15 years ( allowed to take out 2 years max, and how far they have gone in CIF ( not based on rings won, BUT how deep) then the TOP FIVE would be

    1. POLY
    2. MISSION VIEJO
    3. CENTENNIAL
    4. ST BONNIES
    5. ORANGE LU

lets not forget SOME inland schools ie… Chaparral, and V.M are less than 12 years old. So he has to be basing ot on the past 5 years!
    I would say,
If a school has a TOUGH LEAGUE but doesn’t play at LEAST TWO tough NON league, then points should be deducted. Same goes for a weak league, if you won’t schedule tough NON league games, go undefeated in league, then win one lose one in CIF, its almost a wasted season.

Alot of schools have a tough league BUT insist on cupcakes in NON league. They are like the FLA’s and LSU’s of the SEC. They think because they have three good teams in league, they think their league is so tough. Then they go ahead and schedule patsies. Makes NO sense to me.

If we base it on last seasons results, and this years schedule then SERVITE is NUMBER ONE HANDS DOWN!

Still a interesting topic, and discussion.

    Thanks~

  • Norco

just sayin…I seen that, but if you read his post…you would assume he meant consecutive years, now if he is hanging his hat on a FOUR year span in between games playing MD …so be it..

As for nobody wanting to play Norco…from what I`m told, Norco style is not conducive what most teams will see in their league and playoffs (spread offenses). I mean who wants to play a team that runs the ball 98% of the time, and dares you to put 10 guys within 4yds of the LOS…I always looked at it like this…No better way to work on the basics of football then playing Norco-hitting, tackling and checking your players manhood…Norco does not try and fool anyone…Old School smash mouth football…gotta luv it…

  • Corona Centennial Parent

    Norco,

My boy and a couple of his friends had mentioned this website and told me that some norco loser was putting some comemnts online and was making it sound like if norco is the cream of the crop. I have news for you pal, norco will not get away with that lucky 1 point win like they got last year. We tend to beat Norco by an average of 3 to 4 touchdowns this decade if you guys reading are not familer with IE ball. norco when you win some state titles in football then you can speak for the IE as for now Corona Centennial runs the IE.
Another thing check out our schedule we love playing teams out of our area, we have Birmingham week 1 with all their speed it should be a great game. Week 2 we got Mater Dei and you all know that will be heated and will be sold out.

    Welcome to the Dawg House!

  • Norco

    Corona Centennial Parent…
First of all I doubt this is a CC parent…But I will take the bait and respond…

    comments is spelled comments
    familer is spelled familiar

Ok now that we got that out of the way…find me a post where I said Norco is the Cream of the Crop in the IE? I have never disrespected CC on this blog, if anything I`ve given them nothing but respect . And you want top come on here and call me a loser for posting my opinion? Lol…Bottom line Norco BEAT CC last year, whether by 1 point or 50 a win is a win. And the funny thing is Norco did it by running the ball down your throats 56x for 370yds…averaging 6.7yds a carry…talk about physically getting manhandled. And what you failed to mention is Norco still has scoreboard on CC and is still BIGV111 LEAGUE CHAMPS. Also Norco overall is still has a winning record against CC and has just as many CIF Titles. Now CC has NEVER been to the CIF Title game FOUR straight years. It’s been 3 years since Norco won the championship, in those 3 years, you could make the argument that we’re “down”..And in those down years Norco is still in the semi-finals.

    Semis
    Semis
    Semis
    Champions
    Champions
    Runner-Up
    Runner-Up

If you don’t think that’s impressive, you’re either an idiot or you’ve got blinders on.
But I think winning 40% of the championships in the last 5 years is sufficient.

And another thing your playing a Birmingham who is 9-14 the last two years #1. And the only reason the MD game will be sold out is because of their fans..NOT YOURS…I can`t count how many times I`ve been to a CC game and their home stands were NEVER full. At least at Norco the fans ALWAYS show up.

  • Aaron

Corona Centennial has been pretty dominant this decade in the IE with three section titles and a state title along with another appearance in the state title game. So over the period of time you could say they rule the IE, but Chaparral is king right now. Show’s how hard it is to beat a team a second time but the margin was a little wider with Chaparral winning the second time on its way to a section title.

Why you IE guys traverse your miles onto our blog I have no idea. Can’t you worry about your own area. Is it because the Press Enterprise or Sun or whatever you guys read sucks?

I’m just saying you guys have no business over here because well this ain’t the newspaper for Norco or Centennial. Thanks Centennial parent that guy has been annoying.

GD@SC, this will be Oaks Christian’s first season at division III, last year they lost too Serra in the Div X title game. This will be Serra’s first season in Division IV. Just looking out there friend.

Norco – Wow man, you really lowered yourself dude. You went for the typo correction and tutorial on spelling when faced with a direct response. Rule #1 – let the small stuff go. Stick to the point. When you breakdown to spelling and word definition corrections you appear desperate in your convictions, not to mention unsure of your points. You appear to be grasping here and as a result you resorted to the school yard tactics of a rookie blogger. Re-load and try it again but this time leave out the obvious. • Dan

    Aaron,
Nerver stopped to think last year that Serra and
Oaks Christian were still in D10, with those two and other schools like Santa Maria St. Joseph’s Harvard Westlake and Cathedral, D 10 was a much tougher division in the playoffs than the South East and even La Habra’s Southwest division.

  • Aaron

Dan…let’s not bring facts into this. Yeah you’re definitely correct about that. Why in the world during the last realignment they weren’t moved up I do not know. Why they were only moved to the Northern division and not the PAC-5 I’m not sure. Joe Amat said that they’ve have to play by the Catholic Associations gold book to be admitted to the Serra.

I was just stating that Oaks Christian has not been in Division III the last three years and that this will be their first season competing there. That league=brutal.

norco you guys are done coach Gerhart will never coach the same as he did with Toby. Coltin will not be able to fill the shoes of Toby and all of us in the IE know that Toby was and is his favorite son. He didnt do it for Garth and he wont do it for Coltin, shoot i think they even retired his football jersey at norco. Who retires jerseys in high school? I hope all the private qb lessons for Coltin are sticking with him because when we line up to kick the ball off to norco be ready for norco to take it in the mouth with some real smash mouth football and Coltin hurting to get up. 10/29/10 is marked on all the calenders and then you can hang you hat on staying a .300 ball club when it comes to facing the Dawgs Corona Centennial.

norco dont forget to check for my spelling errors on this one, I might have some errors that I need you to point out for me again.

Nice website good to let out some fumes once in a while.

    Welcome to the Dawg House!

  • Norco

    Corona Centennial Parent…

Wow…People have been saying that for the last three years about Norco…And we have proven them wrong time & time gain. Norco is the smallest school in the BIGV111 with an enrollment of just over 2100 students…and yet we still went undefeated in league and still have been STATE RANKED the six years.

Now Toby jersey was retired because:
    1) He finished SECOND in Prep History in rushing yardage.
    2) He was a HS All American
    3) He is Californias All Time Rushing Leader
    4) He was a four year starter at Norco.

Now you say Gerhart will never coach the same? Ok what proof do you have?

Coltin will not be able to fill Tobys shoes? Coltin is a QB & right now he is 6`ft 200lbs running a 4.8 & yes he is taken private QB lessons, you wish you cold afford that for your son. And as of right now Coltin IMO will not even be the starting QB.

He didn`t do it for Garth? Garth was an All State OC for two years& is the starting OC for ASU

As for checking your spelling errors…. how about you just take a night class, pick up a Websters dictionary or better yet..use spell check…

    Aaron,
Yeah I agree, I’ve always thought Oaks and St. Bonnies along with Hart and Valencia and Canyon Country should have gone up with SO Notre Dame, but Hart and Canyon Country aren’t as good as they where a few years ago.
What was cif thinking with that 10 team Marmonte league, what a brutal league, not only is there Oaks Christian and St. Bonnie’s but Moorepark and Westlake are as good as any Pac 5 caliber team these day’s. I guess the only pre season games these teams can have is a week 0
game and I think that would be all, except for maybe a scrimmage.

If I had meant “consecutive years” I would have said “consecutive.” Bishop Amat has beat Mater Dei TWICE in a row.

What does it matter anyways? Bishop Amat has been playing Mater Dei since FOREVER…

When’s the last time Norco has played Mater Dei? OH YES!That would be….never.

Here’s some more history for you…

In 1988, Bishop Amat made national history by deafeating USA Today’s #2 team in the nation in the Carson Colts. But this is not what made national history. What did was that same year, Bishop Amat also defeated the #1 team in the country in the Loyola Cubs. Did the Lancers win the top division that season? NOPE! BA lost to Fountain Valley in the finals at ol Angel’s Stadium…

    SO LIKE…WHAT’S MY POINT?

We’ve been gunslinging with the best for a long time man…You don’t seriously think you can walk in here and talk toe to toe with any Lancer fan do you?

  • diogenes

Who rates the cover? The people who buy the tickets and fill the seats, whose purchases and donations make it all possible. They have been there forever, stuffing stadiums as far back as you want to go. In tough times, like now, they make all the difference in the high school football experience. Particularly for the players for whom the prep game is as far as it goes. The cover? A full stadium, rocking to a good game.

  • just sayin’

and only banners honoring CIF Semis and above. None of this “Fish Bowl League Champs 1985″.
I think what’s being said is if you asked high school football fans in other parts of the country if they’ve heard of Bishop Amat there’s a better chance they have than any other school in the Fish Bowl

  • best of luck to all teams

just sayin that a great point. even with all the great tams los altos had and the recent dominance charter oak has had it would be hard pressed to believe anyone outside of the fish bowl knows much about them. that’s sad. yet bishop amat has pat haden and other’s in the nfl and won multiple championships while still competing with the big dogs, albeit with various levels of success, they are still in the best division in the country.

just look how many baseball players come out of the sgv and yet bonita and glendora were making history this year, glendora by winning and bonita by just being there. that’s startling when in comparison bishop amat has won a mythical national championship and been ranked nationally at other times.

the girl’s basketball team under wiard has produced an incredible run most would envy but are they nationally recognized, probably in some circles. But I would suspect most people would say, “oh you mean that football school..oh yeah”

the irony is charter oak will get a chance to win a division 2 championship and make their mark. that’s all anyone is saying really. bishop amat has made it’s mark. arguing that makes one look insecure and envious.

the funny thing is whenever amat does well everyone says the same thing, “way to represent the sgv”. it would be hard to argue as well that charter oak has had a fantastic run the last three years. good for them but when you smoke your league and blank them all that tells you something, what i’ll leave to your imagination.

i’ve never understood the amat putdowns even when bloggers say their venom is motivated to off set amat arrogance. let’s see amat last year was smaller than any team in their league. every league team had nationally ranked d1 recruits in great numbers. every team had top flight coaching staffs and unlimited resources and ever team started league with a real chance to win it all. how many sgv teams or leagues can say that? not any. so i’ll allow for amat to ound their chest because they’ve earned it, especially after the last two year when they rebuilt before our eyes.

best of luck to all teams.

  • D1 vs. D2

You guys keep talking about D1 and D2, if I’m not mistaken D1 and D2 went away years ago. The two top divisions have to be considered equal, they are based on area not talent.

  • Fish Bowl Paradigm

D1 vs D2…no matter what its called we all know what we’re talking about, don’t we? To say D1 and D2 are the same is ridiculous. Name the top three leagues in each division and see how they match up. In all the SGV there are two teams that could compete at that level year in and year out, Bishop Amat and who ever is hot for their five year run.

To further illustrate that point Serra and Oaks Christian are jumping how many divisions? How about Cathedral, how many divisions are they jumping up yet Glendora is crying being moved into another “league” and Charter Oak and South Hills are complaining that they should have been left alone.

Carson, Dorsey, Long Beach Poly, Mater Dei, Servite, Orange Lutheran, Los Alamitos, Edison and others are all available for games yet we see SGV honks challenging each other exclusively. I see how people have asked Norco to get out of “our” blog…why? Because he has history on his side and actually knows what football looks like in the I.E.

Aram’s blog now has a Corona Centennial parent, let’s see how long before bloggers want him out as well. Over time I’ve said the Fish Bowl should schedule Cathedral, Serra and Salesian yet area bloggers said “they” had accomplished nothing. Guess they were wrong or why else are they jumping 6 divisions!! Not to say nothing of Serra’s State Championship Bowl victory.

Maybe it’s time for some eye opening preseason games before the Sierra League goes heads up with the big bad boys from the I.E. Last year Damien played eventual CIF Champ Upland in a winnable game but came up short because they lacked the mental toughness of a fist fight game. Games against Serra or Cathedral would have prepared them for that kind of in your face defense.

Either way the games are set and the teams will manage to do what they do. Best of luck to all teams regardless of what division they are in it’s all about competition.

  • BA Blues

    JFR

I don’t get what’s funny about our history. Before the internet there was USA Today’s top 25 teams in the Nation. In 1988, BA beat Carson who was led by legendary head coach Gene Vollnogle who at the time was the winningest coach in the history of California high school football. They were ranked #2 in USA Today’s poll. They lost to the Lancers (QB Brian Harmon, WR Jeremey Smith, RB Motu Ili, RB Adam Rodgers)in the preseason. BA would lose to Long Beach Poly the following week.

That same year, BA would face and defeat Loyola in the playoffs. Loyola was USA Today’s #1 ranked team in the country. Loyola’s defense was led by Matt Butkus (Son of Legendary NFL Bears player Dick Butkus).

It was quite a historical season that year. BA would play in the Big-5 (D-1) Championship and lose to Fountain Valley. BA came back from a 21 point deficit but ran out of time losing by just one TD.

Anyways, this is just a tiny part of our history and I think it deserves a little respect. And you can bet the farm that BA made national headlines when they beat both those teams. It was all over the LA Times and USA Today. And BA was all over a couple of smaller papers like the SGV Tribune and the now extinct Herald Examiner.

Norco – The Serra, Trinity, South Coast, and Sunset have been ranked as the top 4 leagues in the STATE each of the last two years. Yes – your Big VIII is a couple spots ahead of the Moore league on the average – but considering the Moore League has Long Beach Poly, who has been in 5 finals this decade, they have to be in the top 5 on that alone. Add Lakewood to that and it’s not very disputable. I’d love to see that matchup between Riv.Poly, North, and Corona vs the bottom of the Moore League.

    Aaron,
Love that post on Glenn Davis . Great point because which other school in the SGV can say they have a Heisman Trophy winner . I know MD has a couple and I believe they are on display at the school . Does Bonita have the same .
    Norco,
I saw your post to CC Parent and by my count you went back 7 years worth of history. I also saw your post to BA Blues on knocking him for 20 years back on history. I only hope for you that in the future you can still speak of Norco in the same manner in 20 plus years . Yes and I will be the first to admit we have had a dry spell but I firmly believe and many of the Faithful also believe we are on our way back . We still have a long way to go but we are on the right path.
    Drranch,
I see your getting an early start on your war with AMAT . One question I have for you . How can you post respect this and include DR in your “do what CO,SD, did” and I won’t include LH OR LM because they are not true SGV schools, in that reply. Did I miss something . Has DR ever won a CIF championship or did they win one last year that someone failed to mention in football . I do respect the program but you are way off base including DR with those two schools especially since CO has owned DR in the playoffs for quite a while now . Now if you are counting beating SH for the past 2 years as putting DR in that catagory ok but CIF titles no way.

    Amat 73,

I know not of any other school in the SGV with a Heisman Trophy winner. And to believe he bequeathed the trophy to our(mine and his) alma mater for a smaller trophy tells you a lot. Granted that no one knew what that trophy was…as I was in Elementary School!

If any would like to see said Heisman Trophy it is in the front office as 3102 D Street, La Verne CA 91750.

Do you disagree that the Moore League HAS to be in the highest division, if not just because of the strength of Poly and Lakewood?
Do you disagree that King, RivPoly and Corona are just as inept as Cabrillo Millikan and Wilson?

    There’s your breakdown

  • Norco

Now can you honestly say you can compare Leagues? I mean give me your criteria? I`m sure you can spin this..As for the Moor league being in the PAC5…What other division would they compete in? The LBU is an open school district so one competitively they can compete with the privates…two do you actually think they would move the Moore league to play out in the Inland Division or Northern Division for playoffs? These schools would complain left and right if they had to drive down the 91 on a Friday night for a playoff game. Also the Moore League in 2009 was ranked # 13 & #8 in 2008 when it comes to top Leagues, both years the BIGVIII was ranked ahead of the Moore League…Now I can make the comparison that before the BigVIII was formed The Mountain View which consisted of the Corona Schools was a top three League in the State..In 2007 the Mountain View league was ranked ahead of the #2 Serra, #4 Trinity, # 13 South Coast, #12 Moore and #6 Sunset-In 2006 only the Trinity League was ranked ahead of the #2 MVL…#3 Serra, #8 South Coast, #18 Moore and #6 Sunset…

    http://calpreps.com/2006/ratings/California_leagues.htm

Bottom line we both can spin this however we try, but honestly how do you compare a 4, 6 or even 7 league team to an 8 league team…YOU CAN~T no matter how hard you try too

    Sierra-FOUR TEAMS
    Trinity=SIX TEAMS
    Sunset-SIX TEAMS
    South Coast-SIX TEAMS
    Moore- SEVEN TEAMS

    BIGVIII-EIGHT TEAMS

Norco-since you asked. Here’s the criteria. You CAN rate leagues when you deal with numbers and averages-instead of totals.Top to bottom. If you get to clean up on bottom teams-they hurt you by having them on your schedule. Can guarantee there’s no Cabrillos or MLK’s on any Serra or Trinity teams non-league schedule.

Get back to us when you finish reading. You asked for it

    RATINGS
The most important thing to understand about how our computer power ratings system works is that it is 100% objective. The size of the schools, their division, the league they’re in, how good the school* or league are historically, their geographic location, how well liked the school is, how good the league is in other sports– none of these things are programmed into the system. None of them are there to bias it the way that they inevitably bias humans saddled with the daunting task of trying to figure who belongs in post-season play. Rather, they are just a bunch of teams with a bunch of results. Cold, hard, and unfeeling, yes…but as accurate, objective and fair as is possible.

*For national football ratings only, historical strength of the school is a factor early in the year in order to improve early-season accuracy of the ratings, but this is eliminated as the season goes on. For more information on this, please click here

We will start explaining how the ratings work when margin of victory is used as a factor. It is much easier to explain that way.

When margins are used, the differences in ratings between two teams is roughly a measure of how many points better one team is than another. An 80 should beat a 60 by 20, etc.

    Example:

Assume the following starting ratings. Don’t worry about how they got to this point for now- that will be explained in a minute.

    Team A’s rating is 90.
    Team B’s rating is 80.
    Team C’s rating is 75.
    Team D’s rating is 72.
    Team E’s rating is 70.

The way our program works is as follows. It systematically sorts through all the results for the season (season-to-date results if we’re dealing with an in-progress season). It takes each result and compares it to what “should” have happened given the ratings of the teams. It knows that if A played C, A should have handled them fairly easily. If A lost that game, or even squeaked by with a narrow victory, its rating is hurt, while C’s is helped. The system keeps checking through all the results for every team. Sticking with team A though, let’s say they also played D and won by 15 (that’s about what they should have done- no real impact on either teams’ rating there), demolished team B by 22 (which definitely helps their rating), and beat D by 10 (not doing quite as well as could have been expected- another “ding” against their rating.) When all is said and done, it takes the aggregate of how much better or worse they did than expected in all their games, divides that by the number of games played, and adjusts their rating accordingly. For example, if they averaged performing two points worse than expected, their rating drops from a 90 to an 88. (Please note: this is definitely over-simplified; it isn’t this straight-forward-mathematical. Points aren’t everything by any means- the win or the loss is always the most important thing, even when margins are used. There is a “diminishing returns” principle at play so as to not fully credit a team for blowing out a weak opponent. In addition to the cutoff point past which margins are not counted, there is a “win minimum” as well a maximum– a number which no win is credited as being below…because, of course, a one point win isn’t just barely better than a one point loss. Far from it.) All teams are adjusted similarly, and then we start over from the beginning with the new ratings- A is now an 88 and expected to perform accordingly, etc. This is done repeatedly until their is no longer any movement in the ratings, and they settle in where they “should” be.

Remember when we asked you to hold that thought on how they got to the point they started at? They didn’t start there actually. All teams start at 0. There is no bias at all- last year’s stats or pre-season projections are not used as a starting point. Everybody starts at 0 and the ratings run continuously until the movement stops. Its just much harder to conceptualize that way (and you thought this way was hard!)- that’s why we started the example off with the teams already having ratings.

When run without margins, the process is the same, but, of course, the margin of victory is not considered. A win is a win, and all wins are counted at the same level. Therefore, the examples of getting your rating “dinged” because of a closer-than-expected win do not apply. All that matters is the win (and who you played).

For an example without margins, consider the following situation:

    Team W-L Games List
    A 3-0 wins: C,D,E/losses: none
    B 2-1 wins: F,F/losses: E
    C 2-1 wins: D,E/losses: A
    D 1-2 wins: F/losses: A,C
    E 1-2 wins: B/losses: A,C
    F 0-3 wins: none/losses: B,B,D

Before continuing on, take a moment to analyze the data in the chart and think about which order you believe the teams should be placed in.

A couple of things are fairly clear. Team A is obviously having the strongest season thus far, while Team F certainly belongs at the bottom of the list. With a casual glance, you may not be able to decide which 2-1 team should be rated higher, and likewise with the 1-2 teams. A closer look would likely convince you that, of the 2-1 teams, C should be rated above B. B’s wins came at the hands of the 0-3 team, while C’s wins were against stronger competition. Likewise, B’s loss was against a weaker opponent than C’s loss, as C lost to the top team (A). Regarding the 1-2 teams, they have identical losses, but E’s win came against a stronger opponent (D beat the 0-3 team). So, E should be rated slightly higher than D.

Not suprisingly, when our system runs through this exact data, the actual ratings do in fact place C above B and E above D.

    Team W-L Rating Games List
    A 3-0 44.3 wins: C,D,E/losses: none
    C 2-1 35.3 wins: D,E/losses: A
    E 1-2 25.3 wins: B/losses: A,C
    D 1-2 21.2 wins: F/losses: A,C
    B 2-1 13.4 wins: F,F/losses: E
    F 0-3 0 wins: none/losses: B,B,D

One thing you may not have seen coming, however, is that B is actually rated below the 1-2 teams as well. Again, a close inspection of Team B’s early-season results reveal that their two wins were against the lowest rated team (and thus aren’t all that impressive), and their loss was to one of the 1-2 teams. In other words, looking at their W-L record alone (2-1) greatly overstates how well they have done. The 1-2 teams, particularly Team E, have had better seasons thus far. Team E, for example, had the win over B, and their losses were to highly rated teams. This suggests that, at this early point in the season, without further data to go on, E should be placed above B despite E’s inferior W-L record.

Rest assured, the process is many times more accurate than the over-simplified points systems that many sections/states are trying as an alternative to the subjectivity of the human process. Systems where, for example, 3 points are given for a win against a large school, 2 points for a win against a medium-sized school, etc. simply can’t compare with what we’re doing here.

    Happy?
