The Scouting Guru on full summer workload with lots of inside info to digest as fall nears

The Scouting Guru has been all over the San Gabriel Valley and beyond, and like always, he’s offered to share his thoughts, free of charge. Don’t hate, enjoy it for what it’s worth, which is one man’s opinion on the talent in the San Gabriel Valley.

Random musing and notes while on the Passing League circuit for the next two weeks….(to read all of it, click thread).

* Having seen all the teams in Southern California, clearly the best team in the Pac-5 is Lakewood High School. They have it all. Speed on the perimeter with the big guys up front. Their QB is nothing more than a great high school quarterback, but with all the personnel that they have on the field, the QB doesn’t have to Joe Montana. They looked really good in the championship game of the Santa Fe Tournament and made both San Clemente and Loyola High School’s (which are pretty darn good teams this summer) look like mid-level high school teams. I make them the 4-5 favorite to make one of the two spots in the Pac-5 finals in December.

* Another team that looks really solid in passing league this summer is Chino Hills HS. I have a philosophy when it comes to teams in the Sierra League. If have you have at least one D-1 bonafide college prospect on your team, your team becomes the team to beat. Well, I really like Ifo Ekpre-Olomu of the Huskies along with Nate Harris. Now, Olomu’s strength is on defense, but he clearly a playmaker on offense and I love the way that the CH offensive coaching staff is using him on offense. Nate Harris is also a solid RB, but he needs a lot of work at CB before colleges can label him as a DB prospect. But the thing about Chino Hills is that their WR’s are doing a great job in running routes and their linebackers on defense are showing that they can play in space. They are clearly the team to beat in the Sierra League and their bell-weather game during the pre-season is against Redlands East Valley. And folks that have read us on a regular basis know how much I think of REV.

* In case you didn’t hear, South Hills finished 8th in the lineman competition at Saddleback College in South Orange County. When you consider that Mission Viejo finished first and that teams behind South Hills included Mater Dei and Tesoro, it’s easy to see why many have tabbed the Huskies as the best OL/DL in the SGV this year.

* I had a chance to watch Santa Fe High School as well and I will tell you this, they are as solid a team as I’ve seen in a while from a Jack Mahlstede team. I make them -3 favorites to beat Charter Oak in week 4.

* People have asked me what my board looks this summer and what colleges are hitting home runs in the SGV/IE. Well, if had to pick a team that has made the most of their offers, it’s San Diego State. These are my second-tier prospects and where they with their recruiting.

1- Chad Jefferies, QB, Glendora (Committed to San Diego State)
2 – Darius Guillory, ATH, Chaparral (Committed to San Diego State)
3 – Dennis Rufus, ATH, Charter Oak (12 offers including San Diego State)
4 – Ryan Henderson, DB, Rancho Verde (Committed to Utah)
5. Jemond Hazely, WR, Corona Santiago (Committed to San Diego State)
6 – Dominique Williams, WR, Garey (three offers)
7 – Taj Teague, ATH, Pomona (two offers)
8 – Jordan Smith, OL, Redlands (Committed to San Diego State)
9 – Aaron Almond, DB, Diamond Ranch (only offer is from San Diego State)
10 – Superiorr Reid, RB, Arlington (no offers)

As you can see, 4 of my 10 second-tier prospects have committed to San Diego State with two more having offers from the Aztecs. I seriously don’t see them getting a sniff out of our 1st tier prospects, but they have done a great job so far. And if I’m the two players that have offers from San Diego State, I’m not saying to commit to San Diego State, but….

* Which leads me to this interesting little note regarding Charter Oak’s Dennis Rufus. Earlier last week, South Hills OL Siaosi Aiono committed to the University of Utah. I like the move for two reasons. One, Utah has done a great job in getting players that are on the board of a lot of Pac-10 schools and are fringe players to getting offers from schools like UCLA, USC, etc. A perfect example of that is Rancho Verde DB Ryan Henderson. This is a kid that runs a legit electronic high 4.4 40 yard dash and has very good DB skills. He was on the board of a lot of Pac-10 schools, but no one would give him a shot and offer the prospect. Henderson did it the right way, he went to their camp, did real well and got offered.

Well, when word got out that Rufus got offered by Utah as a WR, my thought was that this kid needed to commit to Utah right away. As of the date of this column, he hasn’t and now it may cost him. This was a recent item in ESPN.com’s College Football Insider Blog…

Recruiting coordinator Morgan Scalley told Lya Wodraska of the Salt Lake Tribune that with 16 commitments already, Utah may slow down the recruiting process for the time being while it holds out for some higher-rated recruits
who are more likely to become Pac-10-caliber players. “We haven’t changed much outside of making sure that this class is a Pac-10 level class,” Scalley said, “and we feel like it’s headed in that direction.”
Numbers-wise, the Utes are ahead of where they usually are at this point of the calendar year, which could be a direct result of early speculation (which obviously came to fruition) about their conference move. That is affording Utah the luxury of slowing down the pace.
“You want to make sure the guys you are taking are guys you wouldn’t turn down, but at the same time you want to have scholarships available to late-bloomers guys and guys who might fall off from elsewhere,” Scalley said. “But we aren’t taking commitments just to take commitments. We are taking those commitments from guys we think can make a big difference. We are going to challenge (in the Pac-10).”

Rufus might just be seeing the business end of college football. Sometimes it doesn’t pay to wait! In case you are wondering, Utah is at 17 verbal commitments as of the date of the column.

* Yes, I hear you, you might be asking me where are some of the others players in the SGV as far as my board is concerned. Well, let’s take a look at them. The way that I rank them is that I place them in tier’s – just like the NFL does when they start putting their boards together. Here is an explanation of what the tier’s mean.

1st Tier – BCS Prospects
2nd Tier – Mid-Level D-1 FBS Prospect
3rd Tier – Lower Level D-1 FBS prospect/Definitive D-1 FCS Prospect
4th Tier – Prospects

The advantage of doing the tier’s at this point of the season is that you can follow the money. You can look at who has offered prospects and who hasn’t. Plus, you can get a handle on prospects when you starting talking to assistant coaches and seeing where the prospects are landing on their recruiting boards. So let’s take a look at the first tier players in no order of preference.

Tier 1 – Div. 1 BCS Prospects

Ifo Ekpre-Olumu (DB, Chino Hills)
Siaosi Aiono (OL, South Hills)

Olumu is the best player in the area. The kid is a stud. When you have California and Oregon battling to get you, you can see why he has a high grade. Aiono has his Pac-10 offer and took it. Could be the best OL that has been produced in the SGV in more than 15 years.

Tier 2 – Mid-Level D-1 FBS Prospects

Chad Jefferies (QB, Glendora)
Dennis Rufus (Ath,, Charter Oak)
Aaron Almond (DB, Diamond Ranch)
Aubrey Coleman (WR, Walnut)

Even though Jeffries was offered by Oregon St (and believe me, I think that Mike Riley knows a thing or two about evaluating QB’s) – I just want Chad to have a great senior year on film. All reports from the Glendora coaching staff indicate that the OL will be much more improved. If he grades out, Jeffries moves to the first tier. It’s a wait and see on Rufus. You can make a valid argument that both Jeffries and Rufus both belong in the first tier… and I wouldn’t disagree with you. It’s a razor thin edge. Almond is clearly a mid-level D-1a prospect and colleges are concerned about his academics – thus the reason why San Diego St. is the only school that has offered him. I just don’t have a high grade on Coleman. Call me in the minority – but I just don’t think he is a Pac-10 player. His film is not very good and he is not used very well on the football field at Walnut. Plus, a lot of colleges took him off their boards because of his academic status. Looks like a more bust than boom with him.

Tier 3 – Lower Level D-1 FBS prospects/Definitive D-1 FCS Prospects

Wallace Gonzalez (TE, Bishop Amat)
Wardell Crutchfield III (LB, Baldwin Park)
Demetrius Jackson (DB, Baldwin Park)
Jacoby Carter (DB, Diamond Ranch)
Peter Nonu (DL, South Hills)
Jeff Vargas (OL, South Hills)
Allen Brown (OL, San Dimas)
Daniel Kessler (QB, Claremont)

This is where the fun begins for a scout like me. These are players that you can start making calls to coaches in the fall if their tape is excellent. If there is a player that can move into the second tier — it’s Wallace Gonzalez. He did a really nice job at the USC camp. He just needs to have great senior year and be honest with his baseball status with college football coaches. It’s OK to be a baseball prospect more than a football prospect. WC III didn’t really impress me on film and the UTEP offer still doesn’t impress me. Anxious to see how he performs against South Hills. Jackson really caught the eye at the Nike Camp at USC. He did a great job. He has an offer from a D-1 FCS school – but he could be a better player than that offer. Again, senior film is going to be really important for him. Carter is one of those players that caught the eye in his junior game film. He was very solid. I know of a lot of D-1 FCS schools on the west coast that are hoping that he is available in December. Same thing goes for Nonu. He did a nice job (from all reports) at the Boise State camp and we’ll be pushing the pavement for him really hard when the season stars. Jeff Vargas has everything that you are looking for in a D-1 FCS OL. Size, strength and (most importantly) grades. When you have a core GPA of 3.8 on your report card, you move up a lot on recruiting boards. When you add to that resume the fact that he is a stud wrestler, well – the picture is complete. We had a chance to work with Allen Brown at the USC camp, and he just couldn’t break in with the elite talent that showed up at USC. He is solid – but college coaches are a little leery of taking wing-t OL. For a college coach that takes a wing-t OL ,that means you have to retrain them to understand zone blocking concepts and some coaches are just not willing to take that chance. I mentioned it earlier with Vargas, but the great thing about Nonu and Brown is that they all wrestled their junior year. It’s a big plus for them and it may pay off big time in December and January.

Tier 4 – Prospects

Andy Orozco (OL, Charter Oak)
Charlie Avila (DL, Charter Oak)
Kevin Kolbeck (TE, San Dimas)
Christian Oduno (OL, Bishop Amat)
Maurice Dupleasis (LB, West Covina)
Josiah Thropay (TE, Charter Oak)
B.J. Lee (RB, West Covina)
Garrett Pendleton (QB, Bonita)
Tarez Lemmons (OL, Bonita)
Remontay McClain (WR, Covina)

These are players that have some skills, but either grades, size, speed, elite football skills or a combination of those four things fails to get them into that third tier. It’s tough to say whether these guys can make it into the third tier or not when the season begins. Especially if they are academic casualties.

* And to answer your question Aram, no, Notre Dame was not going offer Jeffries and would not have offered Jeffries if he had a great game against Charter Oak. Here’s something for you to consider, Notre Dame no longer recruit’s the SGV.

* Attention Bishop Amat fans. You might want to come to South Hills on Thursday and see one of your main rivals in Crespi HS throwing the ball in a 4-way that includes South Hills, Charter Oak and Upland. Let’s see, you have two CIF champions from the 2009 season, a semifinalist and Crespi (under the astute direction of head coach Jon Mack who knows a thing or two about winning CIF titles) – this could be the four-way of the summer.

Hope to see you on Thursday.

    James,

What will you write when Dennis Rufus goes to a Pac 10 school? There are tons of people that commit but you out of all the people you should know that it does not mean squat until the loi is signed. Utah will have to continue to recruit even is you believe the BS about having too many commitments early. PS Rufus was burning your boy Ifo Ekpre-Olumu on a couple routes a couple weeks back in a passing leauge game at Chino Hills.

Did you cover this weeks events at the NUC 100?

  • Norco

“Having seen all the teams in Southern California”

    Thanks for the laugh…

  • Bob

WOW. You gave all of us a lot to chew on– Good stuff! I want to commit on one thing. One of my contacts is a head coach in the Moore league (LB Poly, Lakewood,Compton, Jordan) When D1 coaches go to one of those schools he will stop of at most of those schools. He told me most of the D1 school’s know who they want before these kids are seniors. They are ALL big on what a player did his Junior year.Of course they hold a few spots for kids who have good senior years but by rule the know who they want before the season starts. When they don’t get one of their 1st tier players the they go to the next level.I saw Gendora QB Chad Jefferies (Joe Montana??) in two of his big come back wins last year and I have seen CO Dennis Rufus many time in the last two years. Both these players WILL get more offers from D1 schools.Keep up the good work !!!

  • Aaron

Sometimes when you think James Escarcega might be alright, he comes at you with these.

1st let’s put your name behind these things. But then again he’s not willing to go out and find the kids, or give kids that he has found a higher grade so that he doesn’t lose a contract.

Here’s a question, when an athlete asks use your service, do you take their money, recut their highlight tape and get their film sent or do you deny them if you don’t think they got what it takes?

  • AE 1178

    JAMES

DYK: there is an OL from WC who is close to being offered by 2 or 3 WAC schools. No joke. UTEP is ready to offer him. If he improves as much as he did last year, he could be a PAC 10 kid, not my words, someone else’s words. Go back and watch your CO v WC film. He was dominant in that game.

  • Bob

What time does the 4-way start at South Hills on Thursday ??

  • just asking

Guru, it is still unclear to me what your role is in the recruiting process.

A few questions that may help clarify.

1.Who employees you as a scout?
2.Are you a newspaper staff writer reporting what the recruiting services are writing?
3.Are you a self proclaimed scout who is trying to compete with the like of Scout & Rivals?
    4. Are just another passionate football fan with an opinion and forum to express it ?
5.You talk about film can anyone send you film to break down and if so who gets this information after you break it down?
6.I have seen you volunteer at some of the local camps, do the schools expect you are there to cover the event for your paper or to grad/rank players? If it were to grade/rank players could there be a conflict of interest? (Scout & Rivals very independent and are not specifically associated with a school)

Just some of the questions that can help the readers understand your perspective.

  • HuskyFan

    Just Asking,
Guru is just a lonely guy trying to figure out what he is going to do tomorrow

  • Norco

Is it just me? Or does every time Guru post his nonsense, he leaves a bullseye on his forehead? I read his comments…and well I`m reading them I get the image of him jumping up and down, waving his arms and yelling, “You can’t hit me!” I hope he answers the questions….

  • Aaron

He claims to have been at South Hills as the “Head of Football Operations” when they won a title at midway of the last decade. Many say he was the get back coach. He likes South Hills.

I do know according to Murray that he still works for South Hills and now also Crespi.

  • Aztec Nation

Guru is somewhat right about Utah’s recruiting this summer. Utah is not playing any games with prospects this summer, it’s either you want to come and play for them or they find someone else and they have done that. My suggestion for Rufus is to head South and take that offer from SDSU.
Coach Hoke is making it very interesting getting players like Adam Muema and Chad Jeffries and some others. Are they they status of USC, Texas? No, but their building a team in a few years we will hear alot more about.

  • Ask Jaime

Aaron who’s Murray and how would he know who Guru works for. So if he works for South Hills and Crespi than both are recruiting without recruiting. I mean how else can you look at it?

Come to South Hills we have an official college recruiter on staff. Same goes for Crespi.

Guru I have a quetion for you. Damien’s Polonio was on no one’s list last year, not eve yours but some how signed with Villanova.

Here’s what would be cool. Break down his high light film for us. I’m sure you have his film.

What were his strengths and what were his areas of concern for you seeing as he was in your own back yard, so you must have an opinion.

What was the GURU’s take on Polonio?

  • Aaron

Actually I made a mistake there, but that happens almost every time I click on Andrew Campa’s Blog since it says Murray in the address I always think about his predecessor at Whittier Daily News.

Andrew Campa says so right here:

“San Gabriel Valley scouting guru James Escarcega, who currently works with both South Hills of West Covina and Crespi of Encino, proclaimed Lakewood “the top team in the Pac-5 Division” and said he would be “surprised” if they didn’t at least make it to the championship game.”

    http://www.insidesocal.com/murray/2010/07/santa-fe-toc-finals-info-and-m.html#comments

Spells it out right there for us all.

  • blong2

Dominique Williams has 8 offers 3 from the Pac 10, Utah,& SDSU are among those schools. Real sleeper. @ 6’4 185, Tremendous ball skills.

  • So no one from Norco?

Hmmmmmhhh….I think somebody is incredibly full of sh!% and it’s not the Guru…put that in bs averages equation.

  • BigDog

    Norco
This blog is for SGV teams only and Chino Hills as well because they play SGV teams. Please leave this blog and focus more on the Daily Bulletin blog.I’m sure they talk plenty about Norco.

  • Aaron

Re-read this list…wow James. You screwed up big. Aubrey Coleman has bricks for hands. But he is on that tier for one reason, except he’s going to a BCS school…wouldn’t that make him Tier 1. He’s gonna be a DE at Washington. He’s a physical specimen that is for sure.

If you go to his blog he doesn’t even look st SGV prospects.

Here’s his top tier, a Norco kid is at five:
    http://ierecruiting.blogspot.com/2010/05/updated-top-10-for-class-of-2011-spring.html

  • Guru????

    Mr. Guru,

I believe you dropped the ball again. Your evaluation of talent has been really off the mark. Everything you said about this person going here or that person going there is as USUAL absurd.

I really don’t get how a guy like you actually has a say in who’s good and who’s not good. I mean, the way you evaluate talent is off the mark. Nothing that you said is true. I’m not going to put any former players on blast right here. But I have noticed that everything that you have said has not come to pass.

You go and grade these players like you are some sort of expert, but what you are is a former Coach that really LOVES SOUTH HILLS! Is BIAS to SOUTH HILLS and everyone that has read your columns knows that as well. They also know you are full of it!

The proof is in the pudding, you rank players so high these last couple of years, but these players that you have ranked so high neither attended a BCS college nor went to a college that you’ve predicted. Don’t get me wrong you might have guessed right sometimes. But you knowledge of these players has demonstrated that you are not a guru, but more of a comical columnist that tosses our random thoughts.

In conclusions, even though you think you have this recruiting all broken down, in all honesty you don’t. These college recruits and evaluators see the potential 10x more than you do and know the bigger picture, so for you to say that this person belongs here or there is absurd. Let the colleges do the recruiting because they are the people that know what they’re doing, instead of some HUSKY LOVER!

Stop your “TIERS” process, because it’s just plain ignorant. The colleges know what talent is and you have shown other wise. Stop scouting and just do something.

  • Now the Guru is a Pac-5 expert?

“San Gabriel Valley scouting guru James Escarcega, who currently works with both South Hills of West Covina and Crespi of Encino, proclaimed Lakewood “the top team in the Pac-5 Division” and said he would be “surprised” if they didn’t at least make it to the championship game.”

Ummmm..I’m sure Lakewood is going to have a good team. I’m sure they looked impressive to you considering you have about 2 years (3 at the most) experience with Pac-5 football. BUT The best PAC-5 team next season is going to be MATER DEI!

Stick to South Hills ball, dude. Help them figure out a way to beat Diamond Ranch! LOL!

  • jacob

    hey whats up

  • Why does anyone care?

Interesting the displeasure with Guru never changes but the voices do. What part of what the Guru does upsets bloggers so much. He has an opinion and gets paid to give it to colleges. I might be a bit upset if I was a college and he was telling trade secrets or sharing information “I’ve” paid for but then again that’s between Guru and the check writers.

Last year out of all the “recruits” in the area I said Golden had the most talent and every one said it was Adam Muema but in the end Golden is at Washington State and Adam is at San Diego State. Sometimes it’s just that simple, look with your eyes instead of your heart.

I know a few think Pendleton is a solid D1 guy but he’s a bit casual at practices and that hurts him. Jeffries is all business and that helps him. I hear this linemen or that linemen is a can’t miss every year and then I see them play and I think, where’s the feet, where’s the motor, where’s the grades, where’s the finish? You get the picture.

Sometimes bloggers need to distance themselves from the process. every one seems married to the kids somehow. “Hey Guru what about MY kid”…and by MY I mean somehow I know the kid.

Colleges don’t usually blow things like this. Marshall Faulk might have had the best balance and best vision of any back in history, surely he had the highest Football IQ of any Offensive player by many accounts, yet he went to San Diego St. and probably to the Hall of Fame. Didn’t hurt him.

What has always bothered me about the Guru and his haters is this. Why do you need his affirmation?

Tre Hale was no where on Guru’s list. Neither was Josh Polonio and who had Ryne Morrison anywhere but APU/Occidental yet two of the three signed LOI and the other is a walk on at UCLA. Go figure. All three had great grades that helped for sure but can others say the same thing, I mean about the grades.

Instead of getting mad at the Guru for his picks just tell us which players should get some attention. People are human and I’m sure it doesn’t help any player to have the Guru bashed by any one school.

My take on him is this. He’s not very good at conveying his information in this medium, too much gush and not enough substance. Like dating a girl who packs on the make up…after a while it’s just embarrassing.

Would be nice if, for once, he’d write a piece like a professional rather than cheerleader or a drunk at the end of the bar. Can’t imagine any Coach rummaging through his drivel and taking him seriously.

  • Another one who doesn`t know what he is talking about

Mater Dei will not be the best team in the PAC5, they will not even be the best team in their league. Servite and Orange Lutheran will.

  • sgv scouting

Wow, I thought I was going to have trouble next week with info because I’m working on recruiting columns for the three area preview magazine’s and you guys come up with questions and observations.

So – in true Peter King style – I will have a Q and A column over the weekend – after the Claremont Tournament of course – and answer all your questions.

  • OH NO

How nice is it that we can look forward to columns in the prewiew by our resident genius on the recruitment of our SGV players by the one and only guru .

  • we care because

Guru is missleading people to belive he has knwoledge that schools are using for their recruiting purposes. Which I don’t think is true and is why he won’t answer the questions.
He is a guy that goes to camps, reads recruiting sites and volunteers his opinion.
That is a lot different than being paid for your expertise and having the ability to get kids recruited.

Guru please tell us which one it is so we know what we are dealing with.

  • HuskyFan

    Guru
Do you think Huskies have enough to play with Diamond Ranch this year.Where do you think they will end up in there league at end of year and what do you think there record will be.

  • SGV realist

I am not being bias towards Azusa High.
But Azusa highs line has been destroying all lines in the SGV.
They have not been to a lineman competition this year and lost.
I seen a kid on the team who is a DE and benches 315lbs runs a 4.6 and has no recognition(Andrew Rocha).
They have a sophmore linemen benching 335lbs. A DE/OG named Edwin Garcia who got MVP and All-Valley last year.
The recievers are solid. So solid that they whooped all the teams who are supposed to be the ones who run through the “Aztecs”. People need to see what they’re up against this year. The Aztecs have it all.
They have also defeated San Diams’s line, BP’s, And others who don’t matter. Scherf is doing something right there.

Aztec pride speaks loudly for the team who has no recognition. I tip my hat to him for that.
I am ready to see Azusa finally get the C.I.F. championship this year. I have no doubt they can destroy everyone in their path this year.
    Goodluck to the boys.

  • Norco

SGV realist…I always appreciate great OL play….Do you have any videos to post up from these players from last year?

  • sgv drop a dime

Azusa I would not be bragging too much I have spoken to a number of the football players and they have ADDMITTED TO TAKEING TREN! This PERFORMANCE ENHANCEING DRUG IS ILLEGAL. The worst part is it will destroy there young livers. Big price to pay for a few good years. Good luck azusa.

  • scherf is doing something right?

Joe knows what those kids are doing! Make no mistake about it. Plus beattle is a no clas peace of crap. They should be Fired! Poor kids.

  • shfan

fred you might want to check out the crespi vs sh passing leauge game @ shhs thursday should be interesting.

  • Not even all the local schools

James you haven’t visited the Diamond Ranch Campus AGAIN and your information is incorrect AGAIN! First, I know your allegiance to SH makes you dodge our campus, but at least do your work before you call yourself or allow anyone call you a “Guru.” Second Aaron Almond has more offers than just SDSU. He also has New Mexico State, Colorado State and Portland State that I know of for sure. I heard he has others, but I figured you can do your homework. Also you don’t even mention Chase Price who has an official offer from San Diego State. He also has other choices, but AGAIN, you can do your homework. Jacoby Carter also has offers, but of course you wouldn’t know that either. Guru, obviously your connections are not very good, you are misinformed, you don’t research all the schools (and yes considering DR has produced several scholarship athletes and been to back to back finals I would think it would be significant enough for you to look at), you don’t do your homework, and you are bias to certain schools! And why should we refer to you as a “Guru?” Why don’t we all just say James has visited a campus (South Hills), has done a little, very little, research, and has compiled a list of players who everybody knows has a possibility of being recruited. Lets drop the “Guru” title. You haven’t earned it.

  • WOW not good

    sgv drop a dime

Are you saying Scherf is a cheater? Are you saying Scherf knows his players are taking illegal drugs? I heard people in Azusa get fired for cussing what happens when they let their players take drugs?

  • yikes

    SGV realist

I have read here that Azusa players are taking illegal drugs do you think that is helping their lifting?

Also, nobody is worried about Azusa and their bench pressing, so they are taking drugs and benching they better get their butt in the squat rack and squat. Benching is not a football movement at all. What you are telling me is Azusa is going to be really good at the bottom of a pile pushing guys off of them.

  • Mantis Toboggan

Sure, Azusa players may be taking Tren (most likely Tren-Xtreme or X-Tren, which is in pill form, opposed to the actual illegal steroid which is available in injectable form to give your liver a break). Tren is a pretty powerful pro-hormone, promising everything the label says (that’s a first with supplements, am I right?). It’s effective, relatively cheap (it costs more for a bottle of protein at GNC than an entire cycle of Tren), and easy to obtain. But, what these football players don’t know is…

    A) Tren is very harsh on the liver when you are too young, and I doubt these guys bought Milk Thistle and the proper PCT to go along with it.
    B) Tren is not a bottle of Talent.

Azusa may have the strength to keep up with Non-Sorry-League teams, but let’s keep in mind here, THIS IS STILL AZUSA FOOTBALL. If things are still the same, which I’m assuming yes, because I am by no means an old guy, then no decent high-school football teams should be worried about Azusa taking Tren. It’s still essentially the same team, except now some of the players probably have Jaundice.

So as I sit here on my cloud of judgment, handing down life lessons, I leave you with the moral…

-Tren is excellent when you’re of age (25+).
-Azusa players… if the allegations are true, that’s sad you have to take Tren when your friggin league contains Bassett, Ganesha, and Workman.

    Follow Me on Twitter!

    …And GO AZTECS!!! LOL jk.

Of course the Guru and other South Hills fans want nothing to do with Diamond Ranch. South Hills football has been on a steady decline the past couple of seasons despite the Guru’s attempt at showcasing the “talent” at South Hills.

Unfortunately for South Hills, if you have someone showcasing your “talent” to the media and then you lose two years in a row Diamond Ranch, this actually makes Coach Bogan look REALLY bad. Every year, especially during passing league season, South Hills is hyped up to be something that Coach Bogan is simply incapable of doing.

    James,
If you work for both Crespi and SH what colors will you be wearing tomorrow. I’ll be there with bells on to see.

  • SGV FOOTBALL

    AZTEC FAN,

I don’t thinks its Azusa the team the people hate on its their situation. For example in the Montview Azusa is the only team that has a decent rating (8.9)the rest of the teams have either a (0) rating or a NEGATIVE rating! The top tier teams in the Southern Section are in the 40+ range as far as rankings go. Then you go to Azusa’s schedule they only have two teams that have positive rankings but again that means you are playing (8) teams that either have a negative ranking or a (o) ranking… Meaning you guys should be league champs every year.

JUST FYI to all the kids out there either taking or thinking about taking tren please do not. This substance is not safe for people under the age of 25! If any of you have taken this go see a doctor because people do not realize the damage you have done to your liver even with small dosages. Not to mention you guys are going through the acne phase right now and this stuff creates crazy like pimples on your face and back. EEEWWW nasty just thinking about it.

  • AZTEC PRIDE

Drugs, Roids, Yeah Right! I know for a fact if the Athletic Director only knew of this, she would probably fire the whole coaching staff and the WATER BOY! (SHE DOESNT PLAY)! Before you make statements like that, you better have the facts and evidence!

You don’t make allegations like that and placed that on a BLOG, because that isnt cool and thats how peoples reputations get damage! Coach Scherf and Bettle, I believe there motto is WORKING HARD, will get where you want to be at the end! I have nothing but the up most respect for the entire coaching staff, because they also show these kids how to become upright adults.

You know what they say, if there not talking about you, your doing nothing. AZUSA KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, BECAUSE YOURE ON FREDS BLOG AND ARAMS, SO YOURE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AZUSA AZTECS

    AZTEC PRIDE!

  • Mantis Toboggan

    @AZTEC FAN

    I’ve seen Azusa’s schedule… It’s fit for a JV team.

All those teams should get blanked, with total yardage under 50.

  • Frank

thanks Sgv, well said! I don’t think anyone is against Azusa football, but we all recognize that they may be an ok team, but they are in a very weak league. It has shown up last year that when they played a good team they did not fair very well. But there seems to be a group from Azusa on here who wants to make the team sound better than they are. Maybe they are hoping that by mentioning the team and dropping names of their children on this blog it will help get them scholarships. Ive been to Azusa games, yeah they looked good against Duarte who almost didn’t have a team last year, and is struggling to keep one this year. But when they played SD who I would say is good team, Azusa looked lost, and it showed in the final outcome.

  • WOW not good

    Aztec Fan
You are right I have not been to too many Azusa football games, in fact I have never been, but I know a lot of people involved in the school and all I am asking is the head coach knows about this use of illegal drugs? I know coaches have been fired for much less at that school.

    Aztec Pride
You say their if their AD knew he would fire the whole staff, my comment for you is maybe he does not want to know. I have heard he has favorites and if you are a favorite you are good but if not he will fire you for dumb reasons. Again I do not know much about Azusa only what I hear from those involved in the school.

  • why

    Aztec Pride

Azusa has been winning because of the soft schedule and weak league they play in.

2008 schedule had a combined record of all teams including your killer playoff teams was 43 and 82 and 1. In case you do not understand that is 43 wins 82 losses and 1 tie.

2009 was better because the whole league played Ganesha, Keppel, Mt. View, etc losing schools. Like ha been stated before their teams have a negative or zero rating when it come to schedule.

Just face it they play nobody they have not accomplished much!

  • Aaron

Not an Azusa fan here at all. Azusa went to the Semi-Finals last season and it was not a fluke. They played San Dimas tough in that game, and then San Dimas depth took over in the fourth quarter and Azusa was spent. This year won’t be a fluke either. Do I think they’ll win it all, I doubt it with teams like Schurr, SD, Monrovia, and Whittier Christian.

You know what I think…whoever says their players are taking Tren has an axe to grind.

Anyways, plenty of Southeast teams at the Claremont tournament this weekend…and Workman. I want to see what Morrison is doing, hope for the best.

  • Wilson Parent

    Aaron,

You want to see what Morrison is doing over at Workman? They supposely beat Los Altos, as you known we have played both, they are real close. LA has the better qb and Workman has the better receivers. Careful when I say better, not saying good. Personally I was shocked how poorly they played us, basicly we scored at will.

We will be at the East LA College 7on7 tournament this weekend, 32 teams. Will be real interesting all those LA city teams.

  • Blank

    Guru,

I have a serious question. How on earth do you not believe in Aubrey Coleman as a prospect. Set aside the academics and issues he has (I know this is a problem). However, I truley believe you just don’t think he is that good. What is your complete take on the kids football?

Here is mine. He is the best “Prospect” in the Valley, by far. 6’5” 220+ lbs and can move the way he can is not your everyday player. Remember, college coaches don’t care how productive you are in HS when you have all the potential in the world. Too many factors can change his productivity, like Walnut playing this future DE/TE at Free Safety. It’s a joke. Washington see’s the intangible’s this kid has and correctly evaluates him as a “tier 1″ guy…why don’t you?

  • bmteducator

Having seen Aubrey Coleman, he has all of the physical attributes that make an athlete a division one football player. I agree with the concerns about the young man’s mental make-up to succeed at the next level. Having watched the Walnut coaching staff’s handling of the young man, it looks as though he has been hindered by their enabling of his poor work habits and lack of maturity. It is a shame that he was not in an environment that had a strong leadership base to add the structure and discipline to prepare him for life in college. Hopefully, there are others who have the best interest of the young man at heart (not their own), who he respects, that can mentor and guide him because sadly that seems to be missing.

Yeah, I ageree-Azusa is in a weak league…But many of these boys that are on Varsity have played football for YEARS-starting with the Azusa Raiders. For many of them this is their Senior year and they want to take it all the way! They’re hungry for the BIG WIN. As for the “drug rumors” I only know a handful of these boys & the last time I checked “Muscle Milk” wasn’t illegal. These boys work hard and are very dedicated to the sport. As for name dropping…Actions speak louder than words-check your weekend paper-the good ones are mentioned EVERY weekend! Constructive critisism is a good thing…but what’s up with the negativity..alot of “Al Bundy’s” out there…Who killed your dream?..These are boys..shouldn’t we, as adults encourage our youth to strive for greatness?….And if any of the Aztec’s read this-Stay strong, keep your head up & DON’T let ignorance and negativity get you down!!THIS IS YOUR YEAR BOYS!!! Ahh…looks like we have more Gurus…and a lot less relevance. Funny thing about High School football…sometimes you don’t know what you got as players develop. One of the tricky things about being a high school coach. In the case of Aubrey, he did not play ball as a soph….I would call him a raw talent as a JR. He has to grow into a position. Watch the tape of the Arroyo…and you will see the impact he had at safety. Watch the tape of Bonita and you will see the impact he had at DE. Walnut does not have the depth that a lot of other schools are blessed with, so you have to play him where he can best help the team. Obviously you could play him just about anywhere. So, I don’t agree with your analysis of playing DE/TE. Really, you must know that many high school players end up playing different positions in college.

Now, this year we have developed some capable safeties….therefore, you will get to see AC on the line more often as he learns that position.

As far as how the coaching staff handles him….that’s just a piss poor comment. How many great high school players have attitude issues. Are you going to try to tell me the Glendora coaching staff lacks leadership because WG left. No..Glendora has very well respected coaching staff.

I guess the bottome line here is……he got a D1 scholarship. I know it’s hurts to give credit where credit is due….but try to be strong. Aubrey came to Walnut for a reason.

  • http://HATTERS!!!!!!!! aztecs #1

OKAY SO THE AZTECS TAKE 1ST PLACE LAST SATURDAY AT GLADSTONE H.S & NOW PEOPLE WANT TO ACCUSE THE PLAYERS OF TAKING ROIDS!!! GOSH WHAT NEXT? COACH SHERF IS THE ONE INJECTING THE ROIDS IN PLAYERS BUTT CHEEKS…GIVE ME A BREAK…WHETHER OR NOT THEY HAVE A WEAK SCHEDULE, WHY DO YOU CARE SO MUCH..LET THEM ENJOY THEIR GLORY..AZUSA HAS COME UP ON TOP FOR A FEW YEARS NOW..WHAT DO THEY GOT TO DO TO EARN A LITTLE RESPECT..So they dont play what YOU call STRONG teams, all that matters is that the schedule they do have they beat..so FYI it does not matter whether they play a big, strong, more regonized or a nobody team a win is a win..So get over it already!! It’s funny how there are So many haters on this blog, but I dont hear you saying anything at a game about how much they suck and I’m sure you dont do that b.cuz u wud get cracked..All you AZTEC haters keep hiding behind this blog since this is the only place you talk trash..The Aztecs boys are on thier feild everyday..say something to their face….PEACE!!!!

  • yeah right

“say something to their face…PEACE!!!” does anyone else see the irony?

As far as the Aztec Raiders go just check out their history. Heck the coaches pictures look like mug shots. Only place where they play oldies instead of the Star Spangled Banner and ankle bracelets are mandatory. I wouldn’t be bragging about the Azusa pop warner teams too much. Where else can you see Pop Warner kids with tattoos and gossip about who got paroled on the sidelines? Coach Scherf did miracles with in that area but the Azusa Raiders, come on! Real ballers play for Covina.

  • AZUSA

    YEAH RIGHT?

real ballers play for COVINA??? hahahahahahahaha, until the playoffs come around! TWO YEARS IN ROW!

  • AZTEC #1

Thank You Azusa “real ballers play for covina until the playoff 2 years in row” got that right..& just for the record I was not the one that made the comment about azusa Raiders, but this is were your ignorance is at. What do the coaches pix looking like mug shots and the oldies playing have to do with the kids that were playing on the field?? like I said before, stay behind the blog..that must be pretty embarassing for covina to have gone that far and get wiped 2x IN A ROW AND THE 3RD WELL ON IT’S WAY..THERE WILL BE A 3PEAT…

  • Why I don’t like the Guru (besides the bonehead comment about seeing every team in Cali and his even

First, the Guru barely acknowledged Amat’s upset win over #3 in California St. Bonaventure. He treated it as if it was an every day occurrance in SGV football rather than the historic, dramatic, and nationally recogized contest it turned out to be. Hell, even MAXPREPS did an article on the victory. Did this surprise me? No, but it still pissed me off. You can bet ur bananas that if one of the Guru’s overrated South Hills teams beat St. Bonnies, he would have…well…you know where I am going with this…

It was only after being harrassed by BA fans (including myself) that the Guru finally gave a half hearted congrats. It was this incident that PROVED to me that the Guru’s intent on this blog was to showcase the talent at South Hills and to promote his own business. Lets face it….South Hills and BA have always competed for the same athletes.

But forget AMAT for a second….Why has the Guru never acknowledged or congratulated DIAMOND RANCH for their victories over the Huskies which I am sure were dramatic upsets on their own. And Guru wonders why everyone thinks he is bias? lol! And of course his disclaimer is “this is just one man’s opinion.” This guy should be an anchor at Fox News.

Now, we have learned that the Guru is now working for CRESPI! WOW! What is he doing for Crespi and why won’t he answer any questions in regards to his “Guruship?” Is anyone else confused?

Regardless, I don’t like him and every Amat fan that I know does not like him either because of this blantant bias toward SH. I think he’s lived far too long in a South Hills world which has, if you will forgive me, “fishbowled” his mind. I know this because he goes to one passing league tournament, is impressed by Lakewood, and declares that they will be in the Pac-5 final! LOL!!!

This is a man that obviously bleeds South Hills blood and has maybe seen Esperanza about 6 years ago and probably witnessed that crappy Tesoro team last season. Now he gets a job at Crespi and is all of a sudden completely knowlegable in Pac-5 ball???

Am I the only one that thinks this is absurd?

  • SD MOM

SAN DIMAS = CIF CHAMPS….. Good Luck and Health to all the Football Players!!! Remember its High School Have fun!!!!

  • Hello

Did anybody go to the South Hills 3 way with Crespi and CO?? I know I did and CO cleaned house once again scoring pretty much at will on them! Crespi was bigger but CO definately the more physical team! congrats to CO!

  • bmteducator

Baby Blue I think you made my point. From what I understand the Glendora Coaching staff held Wallace accountable for some actions that were in their view not acceptable. He has since transferred. A decision that he and his parents felt was best. The Glendora coaching staff made what they felt was the best decision for all the stakeholders in their program without worrying about losing a star player because in the end it is what was best for everyone.

That the Guru would write what he has about Aubrey should tell you that there are many who have voiced these concerns to him. No one seems to doubt the young man’s talent because he is a talent, but it is the job of adults to hold kids accountable when they make decisions that in the long run may be a detriment to their future.

  • Class of 2013

    Coach James Escarcega,

My son was at passing league yesterday and is just a sophomore but this summer being his and my first experience with 7 on 7 I had my opinions about yesterday but what was your evaluation of the day as well as some of the athletes. Talk about the teams and their strengths and weaknesses. You seemed very intense and my only confusion honestly was whose staff are you coaching for or are your working for many programs? Is that a normal format to a passing league game. I had never seen that before. How do I get in contact with you about potentially helping my son with recruiting within a year? I’m confused because I saw you talking to every team but you don’t seem to be as involved with Charter Oak obviously as the other two schools?

  • Sgv realist.

Azusa is doing good right now. They are making people upset just because those peoples kids aren’t on the underdog rising team.

Relax though they aren’t doing anything illegal. Scherf is on top of it all.

I think everyone is looking for a scapegoat to the expected loses this year.

It just isn’t moral or even fair.

    Goodluck Aztecs.

I pray when you pray before each game.

Hey AZTEC FANs, Come on look at your schedule you play some of the weakest teams in high school football. You guys did a great job beating weak teams. Queen of the pigs. When ever you play a team out the area you get spanked. example Bell Gardens 34-6 L 2009, Aquinas 31-18 2008. I predict you guys will go 0-2 in first two games and beat everyone else.
