There is nothing like a Q&A with Diamond Ranch coach Roddy Layton, who predicts the Charter Oak-Glendora outcome, and weighs in on Bishop Amat-Charter Oak debate

Diamond Ranch coach Roddy Layton almost made me want to suit up the way he was firing up the guys at practice this morning. It was like watching a coach chewing out his players in a movie, or firing them up with words of what the first few days are all about, which is work, work, work. He talks about a lot on the this video about the way he inspires, his forecast in the Hacienda and Southeast, the anticipation of facing Diamond Bar for the first time, and his thoughts on the area’s best teams, and who will win Charter Oak vs. Glendora. You don’t want to miss this.

That man Roddy can talk, great interview Fred, Chase Price also impressed me with his humility and team attitude. looks like Diamond Ranch will be right in the mix again.

    Coach Layton:

You’re a good man with a generous heart. I had the pleasure of meeting you while my son trained with B2G.

My son Charlie and I thank you again for your advise and your generosity.

Good luck to you, to Chase, and the rest of the team in this coming season.

If memory serves, the guy before Coach Layton was no shrinking violet when it came to booking non league games; Servite, South Hills, WesCo, Ayala (pre La Puente bus run Ayala) and others.

Anyone remember Tom Leach? Seems ole Tom is doing OK for himself after having moved on over to Chaparral. Maybe Roddy might consider a one and one with them.

And who is Fred Welch? Was he talking about Harry Welch?

  • Panther Fan

Don, Don’t forget Leach also booked against Oaks Christian, Edison, Bishop Amat, Colony and scrimmaged against LB Poly.
I like what I hear, now I want to like what I watch. Let the games begin. Only two weeks to go.

Correction on some facts. The athletic director at Diamond Ranch was Jaime Sandoval and he was the person who scheduled Sevite. He was from Servite. They played before Leach. Ayala and Diamond Ranch competed in all sports long before Leach or Layton came to Diamond Ranch. Diamond Ranch did not play South Hills under Leach. Colony and Diamond Ranch were both in the Mt.Baldy league and that is why they played. The scheduling of Colony was under Layton. Oaks Christian and Edison were scheduled under Leach, but signed under Layton. Layton and Leach were on staff together. Bishop Amat was scheduled under Layton.

Freddie, that is what it is like everyday with Roddy for the players and parents of Diamond Ranch. The man can motivate a crowd. Great coach and always brings energy and knowledge to his program. Also, Layton did say he is working on next years schedule including St. Bony. He keeps the expectations high at Diamond Ranch.

It’s good to know that someone like Panther History is out there. It does get a little confusing trying to remember all the coaches and who they played against. My goal was to make aware the high caliber teams that DR has taken on. They may not have won but at the same time it did bring excitement to the game for the DR fans, especially when some of the games were very close. There have been at least 6 coaches during the first ten years at Diamond Ranch, Layton starting his 5th season is the longest lasting. I hope he stays long term to keep the program consistent. It was the one to two year and out syndrome that kept the team from beng the often mentioned power it has become. Layton put DR in the ranks with the other top programs in the area, both in SGV and IE. You can now look around the SGV and IE and see head coaches that were either a former head coach or an assistant coach at DR who have done very well. Inglima at Ayala, Rice at Colony now starting at Pomona, Fleming at Ganesha bringing up that program, Leach at Chapparrel. It would be good to see DR go against Chapparrel. I would also like to see DR schedule with some top team from the Marine League (LA City Section) known as the toughest league in the City Section.

    What a relief.

Funny how FJR always posts a thread on DR, other threads always come fast after so that the DR threads are pushed down into the archives. But thank you anyway for recognizing DR FJR!!

Few men are as remarkable as Roddy Layton. Over the past two plus years I’ve yet to see a kink in his armor. The man is a bonafide staright shooyer from the word go. I thought, actually prayed, that Roddy would get the Damien gig but every time I thought about it I thought about “his” players, “his” community and “his” impact on the lives he touches every single day.

Gano and Co were great choices but I think Roddy would have had a great impact on bring players over from Pop Warner up. He’s a “talker” for sure but much like my hero Lou Holtz, I could lsiten to both all day. Tough walking away from a converstaion with Roddy and not feel like “you not doing enough” in your own life.

Most high school coaches understand their role and admittingly appreciate the impact they hopefully will ahve on their school. Roddy is front and center in that dialouge. Just listen to the man talking about “texting” Dom Farrar. Those that question his personality/convictions need only appraoch the man. Just look at teh players faces when Roddy’s name is mentioned, speaks volumes.

Over the years I’d had teh pleasure to walk the sidelines at DR games and meet soem incredible individuals, who just happen to be outstanding athletes as well…Jasona dn Bryan Bonilla were just incredibel individuals as were Sermons, Lengyl, Wells, Gibson, and of course the mad man himself Gus Viramontes.

The irony of so much DR hate is that every time I’m with Roddy all he does is introduce his players like he’s the best PR man in the business. Unbeknowest to teh players it’s “practice” for the future when they hit the Real World and have to conduct themselves as men. The man just never stops teaching, preaching, fighting, campaigning, coaching and inspiring.

I can say honestly it’s been a priviledge to call Roddy a friend, great family man to boot.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
