Coaches react to first-ever coaches poll

The coaches have had their say, and Bishop Amat High School is No. 1. Area coaches were asked to participate in a coaches poll that ranked the top 20 teams in the Valley. Some declined or did not respond, but the majority did vote and Amat received the most first-place votes and total points. “We’re flattered the coaches think enough of our program to think we’re the top team in the San Gabriel Valley,” Bishop Amat coach Steve Hagerty said. “I’m fired up, but in a respectful way it really means nothing. I hope they’re right. I hope they’re prophets and they are absolutely correct.”

    Interesting and kind of fun. Debating this stuff is also somewhat entertaining. OK so now with all the private schools can recruit blah blah blah (ummm CO kids from Duarte ??? come on, other’s with kids from out of district… every school does crud like that)..

    Here is how I see the rankings and how they should be ranked… line it up, if they all played each other WHO WOULD BEAT WHO …. end of discussion, it is all hypothetical. A team in a weak league and far lower division even if they win the CIF championship in that division lined it up on the field against the other team WOULD THEY WIN ???? Proposed Winner, higher ranking. A team in a weak league with a weak pre-season schedule that goes 10-0 who would get run off the field playing another school, should not be ranked higher, not whan asking the rankings of the teams in the Valley…. it’s like saying an undefeated 8 man football team who is 10-0 would beat for say Covina that is 5-5…. really?

    Wouldn’t it be fun if football could be like other sports (basketball, soccer, baseball) and we have a tourney for the local teams, King of the Valley …. not the “we would smoke you” knowing full well we will never know as the teams will NEVER line up against each other.

    Flip Flop one or two here and there, list looks pretty close on how they would line up if they lined it up against each other…
