Thursday Final: Covina not slowing down, routs Gladstone 33-0; La Puente rallies in fourth for 35-27 win over El Monte; Pomona wins

Thursday’s results and GAME STORIES
Covina 33, Gladstone 0: - If you expected a letdown after WestCo, you got the wrong team, Colts roll up 400 yards total offense and QB Billy Livingston throws for 189 yards and a TD. But the real story here is Colts soph RB Gevontray Ainsworth, he’s going to be a special one for sure.
Ayala 25, Colony 0: — Chino Hills, Claremont, South Hills, Charter Oak and now Ayala. Now if Damien does a number on Diamond Ranch, you’re talking six deep in the Sierra..
Pomona 13, Montclair 0: – RB Demetrius Counts was too good, rushing for 206 yards as Red Devils go to 2-0.
La Puente 35, El Monte 27: - Lions led at half and were up 27-21 in fourth when Warriors rallied.
La Habra 23, La Mirada 17: — In the battle for No. 1 in Whittier, La Habra survives scare of starting 0-2

    Hey Fred Just a question.

What is a ZERO (0) week. I guess that speaks wonders about the ZERO’s running CIF. Why can’t or doesn’t CIF use week ZERO as week one and say you have eleven (11) weeks to play ten (10) games. If you want a scrimmage in week one (1), scrimmage. If you want a BYE in any week start your season at week one and schedule your bye accordingly. Common sense says you don’t use ZERO unless of corse you are a ZERO.

  • EL MONTE ALUMNUS

Hey Fred, By the way did you read the story about HECTOR URIAS? Played football for El Monte High School back in the day, with Ray Mc Neal who was was SGVTRIBUNES player of the year in 1980,and Henry Omana was the QB. Hector also race cars at Irwindale Speedway and set some speed records.

Sad times for the City of El Monte, who was well liked. Rest in Peace!

    EL MONNTE LIONS.

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

    Wow,

CIF does call it Week 0 and some reporters do, too. You’re right, and for some reason it really bothers me too when people say zero week. I don’t know why, it’s just a pet peeve of mine.

  • diogenes

Just struck me, how long have el monte and puente been playing each other? Long before it became La P for sure and before LP and West Covina played their 7-0 CIF championship battle in 63. All everything George Farmer (ucla) for LP and Sandy Durko (SC) and Ken Weiss (cal) among the stars for the winning Spartans,

  • MONTVIEW INSIDEOUT!

Let’s GOOOOOOOOO GLADSTONE and make the MONTVIEW LEAGUE SHINE! Play hard, because they can’t take hard hits. COACH SANCHEZ, bring your intensity and hopefully your players feed off that.

GSTONE will crush CTOWN, BET ON IT.

  • C-TOWN

Montview insideout, YEAH , because West Covina couldnt hit, and werent very physical. I was being Sarcastic in case u didnt catch it..G-stone, jus show up please so u guys can get crushed and we can be 2-0. Now go back to the Montview league and fight for 3rd or 4th..

  • SGV FOOTBALL

I know this is off topic but is Cody Clements going to be playing tonight since he was taken out of the OLU game late in the 4th? I heard he was questionable and a game time decision. Fred or Aram have you guys heard anything?

  • CtownG

I agree. Sad story coming outta El Monte about the former Lions player and business owner. But let’s be honest. Gladstone up front cannot hold the Colts at all. Covina has a pretty experienced QB in Livingston and as for the receivers go, speed, speed, speed. It doesnt matter about all the bias around here, results count! Montview League isnt better nor stronger than the Valle Vista League. So all the respect in the world for Al Sanchez, an SGV coaching veteran in high school football, his team cannot play at the pace of Covina. Colts 42, Gladstone 0.

Pomona is not a very physical team and compared well against Montclair. I think Ganesha will beat Pomona this year.

    1.Baldwin Park
    2.San Dimas
    3.Covina
    4.Wilson

    Valle Vista Insider,

I don’t know what game you were watching but Pomona played physical in my eyes.. They layed some pretty hard hits out there tonight, especially coming from their secondary..

  • NKOB

La Habra was missing their returning senior QB who has committed to Wash St, because of a knee injury that will maybe keep him out a few more weeks. If Cody CLements had lined up under center and runs the “O” as the defending champion QB that he is, La Mirada loses by 14 points at least. It was way to close for anyone on the La Habra sidelines to be comfy with. They have Servite next week, which could get ugly if they dont covert red zone opportunities into TDs, something they are having major problems with. La Mirada looked much better coming off that surprising loss to St Paul last week. The Matadores had the ball at the La Habra 12 yd line with 1:45 left in the game, down by 6 with no time outs left….it was a great finish, but the Highlander D kept everyone covered and the QB contained in the end! The only thing for sure is that there is PLENTY of room for improvement needed by both squads if they are “expect” to win their respective divisions. Neither of those teams will cakewalk over anyone in the finals unless things get fixed. Norwalk, Servite, and some DR coaches too were seen in the crowd. HELLUVA GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey Valley Vista Insider!

You need to do a little more insiding – there are 7 teams in the Valley Vista – you completely left out Northview

  • Bones

Speaking as a Covina fan, I think Pomona’s win was awesome. It does our league good when our teams earn the ‘W’. BALDWIN PARK UPSETS!!

  • C-town USA

Uh, here are the REAL VVL Standings 2010 (IMO)

    1 – Covina

    2- Pomona

    3- Baldwin Park

    4- San Dimas

    5- Wilson

    6- Northview

    7- Nogales

I was going to catch the live feed tonight but decided to go and watch the first half instead. Here are some of my impressions from the game.

I went to District field last year to watch a few games but never really noticed just how close the stands were to the actual filed of play until this evening. I guess that after having watched the Amat game at ELC College last Friday night, I have to say that it was kind of nice to realize just how close you are to the action right here in your own back yard.

BTW Fred, I did take notice of the kickers name and was going to ask you about that, but it seems that you answered the question before I had a chance to ask it.

Saw some Northview Vikings players wearing their football jerseys at the game Tonight. They made more than a few folks turn thier heads when they walked in on the visitors side this evening. Not at all unusual to see then actually, because in the past, whenever I have been to district field for a Thursday night game, I have often noticed kids and even coaches from other schools in attendance. I guess thats why Thursday games are kind of special. Kind of a community thing you know…

Covina looked pretty good out there tonight. After seeing this performance, I can certainly see why West Covina had such a hard time against them last week.

Anyway, Covina really dominated both sides of the ball tonight. The Colts really stuffed Gladstone on both sides of the ball tonight as the Gladiators were unable to move the ball against a very formidable Colt defense.

Additionally, I have to say that I was very surprised by just how well Covinas offense was clicking tonight. Livingston was really showing off his arm this evening and his receivers made him look even better by making some very good catches of their own.

Unfortunately for Gladstone, you could obviously tell (early on in this game) that Covina was going to go away with a win tonight. The only real question of the night was not if they were going to win, but by how many points they were going win the game by.

The only bad thing that I could see about this game, for me anyway, was that if your team clearly out matches your opponent, I kind of feel that there is no need to try to go out there and try to run up the score on them. The fact that Covina was throwing deep into the end zone after simply dominating the game so early on, kind of irritated me if only just a bit. Now dont get me wrong, I know that you can always make an argument about this sort of thing, but to me, I have always felt that you can be more of a sport if you bring in the bench warmers much earlier rather than much later in a game

  • AMAT 73

Might be zero week because some schools are not in session yet and most have their first game the first week of school . It also may be outdated to call it that as most schools are starting up earlier now . Also it was a very rare occasion that schools had a bye week back in the day and now you see it quite often with the many schools playing games zero week . Jcaz it’s been a few years since I have been to CDF but the closeness I believe is due to no running track there. Just imagine how close you would be at AMAT with no running track similar to the visitors side.

  • Born and Raised SGV

    Jcaz,
Covina actually started to pull out most of the starters after the first series in 3rd quarter. However I do know what you mean but that was def not the case. I am sure the thought behind last nights game was not to rack up points but to finish strong.

on another note.. how funny to hear all the GHS fans speak openly on how they would beat us and how WC beat themselves like we had nothing to do with it…now you are all silent.

We can’t take hard hits? Is that why we have forced several fumbles thse last two games?

Hey nutsideout, Bet on it? You must be a horrible gambler.

  • SD Fan

    C-town USA,

Covina has beat an overrated West Co team, which manhandled you with there starters for 3 1/2 qtrs, but game is 4 so good win, a sorry Gladstone team and you are thinking they are the best VVL team. Bonita would kill you guys. As for Pomona, they barely beat Garey and Montclair who are not good at all. Keep thinking you guys are all that cuz come league, SD will spank you guys again. BP will have something to say about the league title and hopefully Covina can get in on an at large birth. Congrats on the great start and we will see you soon!

  • ST G54

    C-town USA,

Good thing your VVL Standing are just (IYO)

    1. San Dimas
    2. BP
    3-7. Toss up

Its nice that your representing your team, but lets be real SD is the defending champs & untill they are knocked off they are still #1.

BP is right there knocking on the door for league

Pomona from 2 games so far this season does not look that good. They have athletes (like always) but something just isnt clicking..

    Covina IMO is #3

Haven’t heard much bout the remaining 3 & honestly think they can all very easily be shuffled around from #4-7.

  • Colts Win!

    SD Fan

We don’t take anybody lightly and when you play teams that may be not that good you should crush them, just like Bonita did to you last week.

Difference is, were 2-0 and SD is ? Watch out for SEM, those guys on that side of town are tuff boys.

Lets face it, SD has no passing game to speak of and the wing-t is winged out without your studs of the pass! When you lose guys like that, Kohler, Barbone, Joseph, good luck filling those holes! LMFAO!

Now what? Soft San DImas again! Remember the day of the Colts, were back and coming to kick your @ss! Count on it, were back in full stride!

You guys have ZERO speed to kept up!

Colts go to playoffs this year while SD looks in the mirror..

  • P-High

    Pomona HS
Were any of you at da game? We got dominated on the line. If it wasn’t for our speed it could have been 0-0. i very concerned about us winning more games if we don’t start hitting.

  • ST G54

    P-High

You didnt get dominated up front, your RB’s kept turning the ball over & that’s what kept Montclair in the game.. I believe 3 Fumbles lost in Montclair’s territory, correct me if i’m wrong? & 4/5 Fumbles in total..

Montclair just couldn’t punch it in, & couldn’t tackle at all. I will say that your center doesnt really move much and very eaily gets beat. Your D-line was getting through & put plenty of pressure on MC’s qb..

  • SD Fan

    Colts fans,

Keep thinking SD is soft… The same was said last year after we lost to Monrovia. And who has the ring to show how soft they are??? SD DOES! So until they are knocked off in league, cuz your soft preseason schedule is nothing to brag about, keep thinking you guys are that good. SD will probably be 1-3 entering league but the 3 losses are from legit programs. This will make league an even easier task. Also, when SD’s QB #4 comes back, I doubt your 5’5′ DB’s can stop the 6’4 SD receiver. See ya at the field soon.

  • Dan

    SD Fan,
Your calling WC overrated, wouldn’t you think the Saints are a bit overrated too? Bonita putting 52 on you doesn’t look too stellar on your part, the Pot calling the kettle black?

  • SD Fan

    Dan,
where did you get 52 points from? it was 41, but still not good. SD better get there act together or it will be a long year. Bonita has a great team this year and if they stay healthy they can make a great run in CIF.

  • Living Legends

Sd Fan: that 6’4 Wr does a lot of good when you throw the ball 8 times a game. Come on now, you don’t have the same team as last year and either does Covina so let’s get real.

  • Colts Win

We’ll see how living in the past doesn’t help you this year! QB #4 won’t help, he can’t throw either. Check the numbers over last year!

If you don’t have a guy to run the wing-t SD is done. No talent in that backfield at all and you won’t get it done this year!

    Colts will roll you up!

  • Soft Saints

    SD FAN

Get a reality check! The VVL was weak last year and one team in the Mid-Valley was good- Monrovia!

Yes the colts are back, soon to be Carried by one of the mighty ainsworths looking to be a big recking force in the vvl. Ainsworth is in the making and showing great Rb abilities big, physical and getting faster and also remember he is an impressive sophmore.
