Amat’s Concerns: Crespi QB sets another record

Next week, Crespi (5-1) at Bishop Amat (6-0), Serra League opener: For the second straight game, Encino Crespi quarterback Kenny Stenhouse set a new school passing record Friday night in the Celts’ thrilling 53-47 victory over Woodland Hills Taft. A week after throwing for a school-record 484 yards and five touchdowns against Vista Murrieta, the senior tossed a school-record six touchdown passes against the Toreadors.

50/50 out of control: Talk about hitting the jackpot. When Amat hosted Damien, the 50-50 winner won $2,800. Last night for homecoming against Venice, the winner was awarded $2,300. There were 15 other games in our coverage area Friday, I bet if you totaled the 50-50s from all the rest it still wouldn’t add up to $2,800. Most games I cover the 50-50 is rarely over $200.

crespi’s passing game a major concern for amat as their secondary looked confused, missed assignments and were exposed by venice hs #11.

  • Unreal…

What Fred failed to mention is that they won 53-47.

    Sodenheimer points this out here:

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/varsitytimesinsider/2010/10/football-offense-is-great-but-defense-wins-championships.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+VarsityTimesInsider+%28Varsity+Times+Insider%29

Taft isn’t Amat and Crespi doesnt put up anywhere near 53 again for the rest of the season.

  • It’s a must see!

    Amat vs Crespi

This is a must see game. I wouldn’t be surprise if this game was the early League Championship. Don’t get me wrong Alemany is a good football team, but the way Crespi is playing right now after their first game loss is ridiculous.

I truly believe that Amat respected Venice but was really looking forward to Crespi.

They both have coaching staffs, though I give the edge to Amat, I would have to give the edge to Crespi when it comes to talent. Don’t get me wrong Amat has some dudes. But the overall talent of Crespi is incredible.

Amat seems to be balanced with the run and pass, while Crespi is has a running game, but primarily is a passing team. Amat’s defense is really going to have to step up for there biggest challenge of the season.

    1. They need pressure consistently throughout the game.
    2. LB’s have to finish the QB on their blitzes.
    3. The DB’s cannot give up the big nor can they give to much space for the receivers to catch.

I believe Amat will achieve all those things.

  • Amat honk

Amat’s safeties are young but athletic. The one weak link appears to be #38. He got beat deep late in the game. He is undersized and not very physical. Expect Crespi to go after him.

  • the critic

sorry amat fans but you should be worried about crespi and a payback game against Alemany. i kno its down the road but man oh man believe me coach Harrington or the Alemany warriors havent forgot about that whooping you guys put on us last year now that league has started i hope you guys beat up on crespi, loyola and Notre Dame. so we can have a big finale at the end of the season good luck amat.

  • Truth be told

That is why you play the games in league. No one said this Serra league would be easy for Amat but Also the people of Crespi feel the same way. This will be a tight game, where as you know winning your first league game is very important. You do not want to start in the Serra 0-1 so Amat will be pumped, plus playing at home is a advantage. Right now all teams are playing very well with the exception of ND but dont let that fool you Kevin Rooney will prepare for this league battle and maybe has not unleashed his arsenal full throttle yet. Loyola beat a very good Valencia team so they are clicking as well. This is no cakewalk for any team here. Amat has just as good of chance as the rest. It will be exciting. The way I see it in order of finish
    1.)Alameny
    2.)Amat
    3.)Loyola
    4.)Crespi
    5.)ND

anybody care to list their order of finish for the Serra?

  • jcaz

    Truth be told,

Unfortunately, that is also the way I see it happening this year and that is only because that last game is at Alemany.

Last time we went there, our JV’s whipped them something like 55 to nothing, but our varsity didn’t do so well.

Maybe this year is a little different if only because we beat them in our last game over at Kieffer.

  • Amat tested

Two words for coach Hagerty at Amat, “Pass Defense.” Their soft underbelly has been exposed and unless they can control possession during the game, it will be a Crespi feeding frenzy. Stenhouse is all that and their O-line protects him very well. Sorry, Ruiz, he’s got you beat for 1st team All league.

  • Amat tested

The Serra finish will look like this:

    1. Alemany
    2. Crespi
    3. Loyola
    4. Amat
    5. ND

Loyola will be at home against Amat and will have Neuheisel at QB ready to light up the place as he did last year. Alemany is just too “battle tested” to be denied and that taste in their mouth from last year’s whoopin will be motivation in itself. Crespi’s pass game will be too much with 11 pass TDs in two games…ouch.

  • the critic

i think the serra league finish will look like this:
    alemany
    crespi
    amat
    loyola
    nd.
and if alemany was to get upsetted by any team it would be crespi sorry bishop amat but you guys are going to get all that alemany has to offer in that last game….

  • Write this down!

The Serra will finish like this!

    Bishop Amat
    Crespi
    Alemany
    Notre Dame
    Loyola

  • WERD UP

AMATS GOIN DOWN THIS WEEK. GO CRESPI. AMAT SUXS

  • Ro

I do not think any team in the serra league will go undefeated.there is to many great teams that can beat each other .

  • the critic

i gotta disagree with you ro:
Alemany is by far the toughest team in the serra league and if there were odds in who would most likely go undefeated Alemany would definitely be the most favored but your right about the league but Alemany is far more talented better coached and more disciplined then any team in the serra league….Alemay only loss will come in the semi-finals the pac 5 is too deep for my Alemany team but we will make major noise….

  • Coach Pasadena

The Serra will finish like this!

    Alemany
    Crespi
    Loyola
    Bishop Amat
    Notre Dame

    the critic

Alemany is now “your” team? LOL! How did I know that was going to happen…?

Anyone else want to hop on Alemany’s bandwagon right now? Save us your prediction, “critic.” We all know you’re an Amat hater that would love nothing more than to see us lose.

BTW, when Bishop Amat beats Alemany, you’ll want to change your allegience to Mission Viejo. They are favored to win the Pac-5 this year. Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll have it in you to hop bandwagons w/ no problems.

  • bbbbb

It seems that Northview got rid of the disciplened joke of a Head Coach Arrellanes and would rather win games.

  • ???

    Northview?

This is a Crespi vs Bishop Amat thread. I think you are in the wrong class, Jr.

  • Amat Dude

Remember that Amat and Hagerty is undefeated at HOME. That will be a big factor in this game, I’m sure he will pull whatever tricks he’s got in his hat to keep the streak alive and our quest to win the Serra League championship. The big home advantage will be a huge plus for the Lancers…Amat will prevail, by a field goal. If we can beat St. Bonnie like we did last year, we can beat almost anyone at home!

    Go Lancers!!!!

  • http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/varsitytimesinsider/2010/10/football-the-times-top-25.html LA Times Varsity insider

Amat still gets not love from the LA times, they are unbeaten and are still not considered one of the elite teams….

“Long Beach Poly’s upset win over Lakewood has made it clear that there are only five elite unbeaten teams battling for No. 1, though Alemany and Bishop Amat hope to join the conversation.” Quoting the LA Times.

  • Forget Records & Rankings….this is the Serra!

If you guys remember, Crespi beat Bishop Amat last season through the air. BA was unable to stop Crespi QB Bryan Bennet who completed 21 of 30 for 322 yards and 3 TDs. Crespi also ran for 158 yards. All of this happened against a BA defense that was much more mature and talented in comparison to this season’s Lancers. On paper, Crespi should win. Then again, on paper, BA should never win against any Serra school. However, this has never stopped BA in the past.

Some big yards have been put up against Crespi’s defense and special teams (approximately 400-500 yards a game average) and Amat’s offense can score as we all know.

It seems to me that Dominguez kept Stenhouse in check just by the mere fact that Dominguez had speed. Dominguez defense put some pressure on the QB, but moreover, the secondary kept Crespi’s receivers in check, not allowing them any major yards. Amat has the speed in the box, but the secondary may be an area of concern for Amat, as they are young and probably not as fast.

What’s baffling to me is that Dominguez had at least 5 lost balls and still managed to win the game. Three were fumbled inside Crespi’s 20 yard line!!! I don’t know where I read a stat about football, but it pointed out something to the effect that when a team is +2 in fumbles/picks, that team will win about 80% of the time. I don’t know the exact number of lost balls Crespi had, but I do know they were at least +2 in fumbles/picks. In other words, statistically speaking, Crespi should have won (at least on paper) the game.

Amat will have to put pressure on the QB to be successful. Yes, I know, that can be said of any team, but it really is going to make a difference here. Amat will have no problem containing the run or running on Crespi, as Amat has put up some impressive run stats and other teams have had no problems containing Crespi’s run.

Otherwise, look for a shootout with it being anyone’s game.

what are you talking about now alemany is my team i have been going for alemany since the scott brothers played there come on dude get real and i go for all of pasadena teams because that is where im from and all the players from pasadena is on alemany go check the roster out…and bandwagon hopping never i been an alemany fan when they were called the indians maybe you dont remember that but as always there’s a hater and critical condition your the chosen one…lol…i give amat props for what hey are doing thats a good team but to me alemany is better and payback is a dish best severed cold.
wait who was my team before them……..

  • Halloween?

Isn’t it funny that every school Amat plays, some mysterious fan of that school shows up on this blog talking smack. lol.

  • Dan

Crespi gave up 47 to Taft, they only beat them by 6 points, their passing game could give Amat trouble but I think Amat beats Crespi at home.
Alemany’s win over Oaks C. was first game of the season, lots of things can happen in first games, Westlakes easy win over Oaks C. takes some luster off Alemany’s win over Oaks despite the fact that I think Westlake is one of the top three in So.Cal. Back to Alemany, they are good this year but I don’t see anything spectacular that they have done to make them favorite’s over the other Serra teams, since Amat has both Crespi and Alemany at home I give them the edge for the Serra league. I also think Loyola is improving and could be a factor in the Serra.

  • amat forever

Lots of hype about Crespi’s QB…yards will come if you throw close to 50 times a game…In the Serra you need to be balanced, because passing that many times will get you blitzed and picked and quick 3 and out’s…Amat has one of the better balanced offense’s in the Pac 5…Long sustained drives will keep the ball away from Crespi… If Hag’s let Rio throw 50 times a game he would shatter all Amat’s records, but it isn’t gonna happen because…you need to run the ball to be balanced, we have excellent running backs with different styles, they complement each other very well…additionally we run screen passes better than any one because we have one of the best reading QB’s at this level, Rio is learning the right reads and is getting better and better every week…Look for Amat to pull away late in the game and the defense to shut down there big play maker Lucien. Montes and Juarez will have big games defensively, and Big Wallace will have his break out game…Backs will be steady and Rio will make plays and reads… when Hag’s start’s letting Rio throw deep down field with some double moves and deep outs…no team will be able to stop Amat, he throws on the run as well as any D1 QB…Hag’s knows this and has been playing it close to the vest…he is going to open up the vault soon…I can’t wait to watch…We could run the table…Next 4 weeks are going to be some of the most exciting football La Puente has seen in a long time…The swagger is back, where other teams start doubting themselves getting off the bus and stepping on our field…Psych job’s are very real for both coaches and players…

  • Amat tested

I like all the arguments in favor of Amat winning the game. I’d like to see it. I saw that game last year and they were smacked up and down the field both offensively and defensively by Crespi. The score was actually closer than the game appeared. I believe McClanahan was sacked several times in that game on crucial situations. They will put that same pressure on Ruiz, and although he is more mobile than McClanahan, he doesnt have any break-away speed. They’ll have to rely on the short pass and busting runs. I’d enjoy seeing Stenhouse on his back but the guy has big-time game and will put up big numbers. Amat must control clock and hope to get stops. If they get past Crespi things will look good in the Serra. But I don’t see it happening.

    **BishopNation is now Below .500**

    AVERAGE – Week 6

BishopNation 2010 Season as of today:
    Garfield 2 – 4 – They beat Jordan. Jordan got smoked by CRESPI 51 – 8! Oh…Oh!

    Dominquez 4 – 1 (BYE)

Muir 1 – 4 – They lost to Arcadia. Arcadia got smoked by the powerhouses that are little old St. Francis and Monrovia! Oh…Oh!

Damien 3 – 2 – OMG…did you see what JSerra did to these guys! Brutal…! JSerra is a historically below .500 team and JSerra beat these guys worse than you did!

Cathedral 4 – 1 – They beat South Pasadena who also lost to that powerhouse that is Alhambra.

And then of course your below average performance against an undermaned 1 – 4 Venice team.

    WHAT DOES THAT SPELL…?

Total opponents record: 15 – 16…! Can you say BELOW AVERAGE…?

Really…! I’m not making this up people…! And the Tribune says this is toughest schedule in the SGV?

Sondheimer…Is this really worthy of your ranking in the Times? Hello…? Crickets…Crickets…Crickets! C’mon! Shame on you…These are the facts!

And, this is what the Keeblers are so proud of…? These are “the best football schools in Southern California?” Really…?

BishopNation, stick to the Fishbowl. This is NOT 1995.

Leave the Powerhouse contests to the actual Big Boys in the PAC 5!

  • the critic

ok amat fans your team is great offensively, defensively your an average team your pass defense is probably one of the worst pass defense in the serra league. and alemany has one of the top all around offenses in the state of california. so to me thats spells trouble and most likely a big lost at the end of the season and probably knock you out of a playoff spot…..lol…j/k about the playoff thing amat will make playoffs…

@ns95, the scheduling is all part of the master plan, the big picture. Feel free to repost your comment over and over again. I will repost it after our victory.

We don’t have one of the worst pass defenses. Again, our 2nd and 3rd string defense has been getting a lot of playing time. If we kept out 1st offense and defense in the entire game like crespi and alamany rio would already have over 2500yrds passing and the td’s scored on us would be half, but that’s not the amat way. We are are ready to silence all you haters.
    Victory to Amat

  • Smallcity

You’re absolutely right Fred. Speaking of stats, mathematically speaking, you are waaaaaaayyyyy more likely to hit an equivalent jackpot playing the 50/50 than the California lotto.

  • Lance R

Well looking at Crespi on IBN they rely on #15 Devon Luci(sp?) as the big game breaker reciever with a good left handed QB getting him the ball. Their running game is average as they throw more then they run. Amats secondary will be tested if they cannot put pressure on the QB. Amats Defensive coord. Difiori lives for these type challenges and will call a great defensive game, you will see more blitzes to keep pressure on this Crespi QB. Amat will shut down what running game Crespi does have, so it is a battle of how well Amat covers a stretched field with a pass happy team. IBN has a poll on who wins the Serra, they give Amat their props but one guy picks Crespi to win the Serra, with that I am sure he has Crespi winning this Game vs Amat friday. It is a pick-em Game but I see Amat winning a close one being they are at home, Crespi won last year at home, this will be the payback game with Amat at home . Amat tends to get up and play great football games when they are locked in with a good opponent. The key is Amats OLINE. They must dominate this game giving Moore and Shay lots of space to run. With that Rio gets to go pass happy as well. This will be the first time the starters will play 4 qtrs so point totals could go way up. No prediction in score but I like Amat in a close one.

Transitive property called with the following analysis:

Amat > Dominguez > Crespi = What’s all the worrying about?

  • Alfred E. Neuman

    “What – me worry?”
Who from Amat has expressed any concern? Only Fred and the detractors.

  • transitive x 2

Bishop Amat > Damien > Diamond Ranch > Walnut > Covina > West Covina > Glendora > Charter Oak

All is well in Fishbowl Football Land! lol!

  • Parochial Madness

True BA Fans are always concerned with the Serra. Any team can beat any team any year. The reason for this is because the difference in talent between schools is minimized. Last year is a perfect example in that Bishop Amat lost to Crespi but Crespi lost to Loyola and ND (both of who BA beat). More parocial madness would be Bishop Amat’s 2008 victory over Crespi. Crespi beat Servite that season who got stuck in a 3 way tie for the Trinity with Orange Lutheran (Trinity #1 by cointoss and who lost to BA) and Mater Dei. I could go on with example after example but it’s pointless as these schools are more like mini-universities rather than high schools.

Regardless, this is great football in arguably two of the greatest high school football leagues in the entire country. This weeks BA vs. Crespi will be no different.

About 10,000 fans are expected at BA’s Keifer Stadium this Friday. And yes, the 50/50 Drawing will probably be close to $3,000.00 again.

    GOOD LUCK LANCERS!

  • Joe Amat

What is forgotten about the 50/50 raffle is the “other 50%* Amat’s success in the 50/50 gives the Amat Booster Club additional funds to help the athletic program. That means every home game that is this size gives them the equivelant to help some team buy another set of uniforms, pay for a few extra busses, or buy additional equipment.

Thanks to everyone that participates in each schools 50/50 … remember – half of that goes to a good cause!

  • AMAT 73

Congratulations to all the teams of the SGV that got the W last Friday night and better luck to those that lost. As for AMAT last Friday was the first time I have seen a Lancer team come out flat in 3 seasons . Don’t know if it was because the discounting of Venice or looking ahead to Crespi but for whatever reason they were flat. I imagine it was looking towards Crespi as the announcer was referencing their score and yardage a few time during the game. Maybe all of us were looking towards them because it was a quiet night and people seemed to be more intersted in the 50/50 amount then the game. The Men in Blue still performed very well and yes Venice chalked up yardage but not to many points on the 1st string defense. What was exciting was seeing Gonzales and Booth working on the field . Gonzales got his first TD of season and a few key catches for first downs .Looks like when he catches the ball he falls for 3 extra yards at least. Booth also played well and is a fine blocking tight end and receiver aa well . I expect to see a different team come Friday and the staff will have them ready. Like I have said they can run wild between the 20′s but it’s what your defense does in the red zone that counts and that’s where AMAT’s does shine. For all of you putting your hopes on Alemany that is a long way off and a lot can happen by then . When you play in the Serra anyone can knock off any team at any time that is why we take them one week at a time . We do have a bye before that game so we will have 2 weeks to rest and prepare for what many are thinking will be the game for the league title.

  • 12th man

The 12th man will prove to be the difference in this showdown thriller!! Look for special teams to play a big role in this game~ I just find it hard for any team in the Serra League to come into Keifer Stadium & pull off a Win!!~ The dog pound will be “Rock”N”~ Final Score: Amat 31 – Crespi 28…& remember! You heard it here 1st with the “12th man”!!!

  • COChargerfan

Was reading the blog and everyone seemed a little down so I brought good old transitive into the picture strictly for motivational purposes…and it worked because that’s the attitude that I’m looking for from the Family.

Now, put on your freakin game faces and focus on getting your revenge on Crespi and forget about the SGV and Inland teams because they’re not on your schedule…game faces from here on out as it’s time to win league again.

And Amat 73, you’re right that every team is capable…so focus on your prize and stop worrying about the ones that CO, SH or anyone else in the SGV is trying to win.

Time to focus…one game at a time.

  • AMAT 73

    cocf,
Kind of puzzled by your post . Not sure your comment about not worrying about CO ir SH was directed to me or the AMAT honks in general .Kind of think it was to me as I usually post before a game to stay focused and keep your eyes on the prize. Either way all I see on here from the Family are posts concerning Crespi and how we will take care of business Friday night and no other team other than a few sprinkles of Alemany mainly from non AMAT fans which I myself said is a long way off. It is well known we focus one game at a time hence my thoughts on AMAT coming out flat against Venice by looking ahead to Crespi . I for one do not worry about any other team winning other than to wish them well and congratulate on nice wins . Don’t know where that is coming from at all. I don’t see any post that reflect being down about Friday’s game . On the contrary I see nothing but positive post in that we will take of business at home this Friday night. The one negative is from our mutual pal Jcaz in him seeing Alemany take league which is so far off in the future it’s not even worth thinking about right now . Crespi is now and AMAT WILL SHINE come Friday night . And yes I do think a little of CO as I do hope they uphold the honor of the SGV in the IE when the time comes but not to the point where I am distracted from the task at hand which is cheering on The Men in Blue this and every Friday night. Good luck to your boys in their season opener

  • COChargerfan

Amat 73youre reading too much into what Im trying to sayjust trying to fire up the troops to focus on winning the Serra and to quit worrying about who is king of the SGV baloney. Come on, the response to my transitive comment was 100% predictable so I used it to set up the follow up and to make my pointthat is, there’s no transitive property BEFORE a game is played (only afterwards when the outcome is known) and for the Family to focus on your prize because many of your fellow SGV football fans are also pulling for Amat to represent our fishbowl.

    Good luck.

This game will boil down to defense.

Put pressure on # 5 QB Ken Stenhouse and contain #15 6’2″ 190 lb Devin Lucien and Amat will win. Crespi’s Defense has given up 139 points to Amat’s 62 points in six games…that’s alot provided more than half the points were scored on our 2nd defense. You are like a serial killer , you must get close to your victum and where else to be but at the Amat game among the ones you hate the most and not be known . I just imagine the thrill you get .

  • Amat tested

If the O-line for Crespi can maintain their blocks as they did last year, it could very well be raining footballs. They are a passing team…you don’t think they’ve worked on protecting the QB who has had 11 TD passes in two games? Their pass protection is top-notch. Likewise, Amat can run up numbers on them as well. Crespi has faced tougher competition but Amat can hit like mules. So, the easier schedule may have kept their team physically stronger for league. Ball control ad nauseum will be deciding factor.

    COCF,
OK no harm no foul. Thanks for the explaination as sometimes your posts are a bit puzzling. It seems the Trib’s love for the AMAT vs CO battles keep the flames going . I mean look at the thread on CO’s possibility of winning 3 titles in a row . Why a thread on that , and I bet you knew as well as I did that it would wind up a pissing contest between the bloggers of the two schools . Never fails that a thread containing AMAT or CO is an automatic 75 or more hit thread regardless of the topic. Whether started by an AMAT or CO honk or just some sideliner looking to start shiat between it always happens . Also the no mention of Bonita and only as other on the poll was taken as a slap on the face by many Bearcat followers. Why not make it fair and just list all the SGV teams affected . If it brings the hits then you go with the hot hand and in the SGV CO and AMAT bring the hits.
    Jcaz,
Oh pal of mine. To quote you in reply to truth be told post of the SERRA finishing with Alemany at 1 and AMAT at 2 you wrote, ” unfortunately that is also how I see it happening this year and that is only because the last game is at Alemany.” That doesn’t sound like a could or maybe it will happen that sounds like you agree with truth be told . Now I am not saying it’s not possible because anything is possible but as of now I am going on record that we will win league and go in the playoffs as the number 1 seed from the Serra. This Friday is the first test and we will be fine and come out with the W as Hags and company will have the Lancers firing on all cylinders .

  • Amat Dude

    AH,

It may be raining footballs on Friday, but you will be crapping footballs through that big hole of yours on Saturday dumbshiat! We are at home, if that means anything to you and that Crespi defense will have a fun time trying to stop the run and pass.

  • 12th man

All of you Amat haters are pathetic!!~ Lets be realistic..Theres only two guys from crespi you need to be concerned about & theres about 7 from Amat! Do the numbers??? If this was court it would be an open & shut case!! Theres no way the Amat defense will allow an aerial attack..they have been preparring all week for crespi’s offense & its not like crespi has something up there sleeve..we all know what there going to do.. A blind man could see it coming!! Come friday the blue & gold will be ready..There shouldn’t be concern about our defense of backs as much as there should be concern about the entire crespi defense that is allowing an average of 23.2 points per game!! “Swallow that” (notsince1995)
