Homecoming for Wilson coach Brian Zavala going against Northview on Friday

By Steve Ramirez
Friday night will be a homecoming of sorts for Wilson football coach Brian Zavala, whose Wildcats host Northview in a Valle Vista League game at 7. Zavala was the Vikings’ defensive coordinator for three seasons before taking over at Wilson prior to last season. “It’s definitely something I’ve been thinking about,” he said. “I left on good terms, so there are people over there I have a good relationship with.

“It’s tough to coach against (your friends), but we’re competitive, too, and that comes out. I know the kids are pumped up for it.”

It’s also a big game for both sides, with each team needing the victory to stay in the hunt for playoff consideration. The Vikings, who beat Pomona 35-20 last week, are 1-4 overall and 1-1 in league. Wilson, which lost to Covina, is 3-2 and 0-1.

“It’s going to be a battle,” Zavala said. “I think there’s a little more incentive that we both know each other, but we both need this one. We’re aware of all the factors that go into (finishing in the top two in league to get an automatic playoff berth). Who knows how the at-large formula is going to work? We have to take care of business.”

The Wildcats are led by Moses Vega, who has rushed for 399 yards and six touchdowns.

Northview, which also likes to run the ball, is led by Marquis Thomas, who rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns last week.

  1. iam a covina alum and i hope northview rolls them there abunch of sore LOSERS the team and coachs and fans have no CLASS WELCOME TO THE VVL next year well beat them 50 to 0

  2. oh ya you anit going nowhere but home at the end of the year bp and sd are gonna smack you like covina did

  3. Our program at this time is a mess. There is talk around the program that we may not win another game the rest of the season. As far as San Dimas and Baldwin Park at this time we have no chance. You want to believe in the coaching staff, but based on what we see on the field it doesn’t look very good. I heard about the comments are coaches made after the Covina game, just not sure if I believe them.

From a Wilson parents perspective this season doesn’t seat well, and it doesn’t look good on Zavala. Covina had talent, but our talent was at that level or above and what happened we got blown out. The teams we have beaten we should have blown out, but ended up beating them by one or two scores. I see great plays out their but not a great team. Sorry but that is coaching.

  4. I don’t care who plays QB they could put #3 back there and play QB if they think it will help Wilson win. We got the wheel back, hopefully win homecoming, have a chance to get into the playoffs, it could be a lot worse. Sorry I wont comment about Wilson anymore (even though I am a alum, r u?)…Let’s go Wilson shut these damn parents up and enjoy.

  5. I have no idea what Zavala or his staff looks like at practice nor do i care as long as they keep the Wheel and compete for the playoffs. HAHAHA yeah lets compare Wilson to Santa Margarita or Bishop Amat.

  6. cookie,

Are you saying the Mcdonalds on Gale doesn’t have the best burger in the world???
