Heee’s Back: The Scouting Guru knows his Bracketology, giving insight to Sunday’s Draw

The Scouting Guru has been all over the San Gabriel Valley and beyond, and like always, he’s offered to share his thoughts, free of charge. Don’t hate, enjoy it for what it’s worth, which is one man’s opinion on the talent in the San Gabriel Valley. Today the Guru talks Bracketology. The Guru shared this with us last year and was pretty darn close.

From the Guru: OK, it’s time for Dr. Bracketology to put his pencils, pens and paper to work for you and get you up to snuff as we head into week 10 of the high school football season. Today I will concentrate on the Pac-5 and Inland DIvision. Tomorrow, I will try to put together a Southeast and Mid-Valley bracket for you. The CIF-Southern Section will announce its playoff pairings on Sunday. For a breakdown of the Pac-5 and Inland and how it might shake out for Sunday’s draw, click the thread and enjoy.

I though all league champions get seeded????? So no way does Roosevelt get a seed….Whoever finishes first in the Sierra will get that seed

  • Chino Hills

    Scouting Guru?

Are you some kind of “poser”. According to the CIF playoff handbook, which you have obviously not refered to, 2 seeded teams from the same league i.e. Centennial & Roosevelt, can’t be in the same bracket.

“SEEDS – The initial step is to designate four teams (maximum) as seeds, with No. 1 and No. 4 placed in the top bracket, and No. 2 and 3 in the bottom bracket An exception to this procedure would be if seeds in the same half of the bracket are from the same league. If this occurs, and using the example of the top half of the bracket, No. 4 would then become the No. 3 seed, and No. 3 would fill the No. 4 position, to separate the league representation.”

Please come up with a better scenario for the Inland Division.

    Thank You

  • Steve Ramirez

    Norco:
Chino Hills is right. You don’t have to be a league champion to be seeded. But, as he wrote, all second-place teams must be in the opposite bracket of the league champion. Also, the league champion must be seeded ahead of the team that it beat out for the league title.

  • gralx

Beyond the Roosevelt/Centennial issue… All 3 Sierra league teams in the same side of the bracket? One, that doesn’t happen. Two, that means you are giving Claremont the #1 Sierra seed, which is fine, but the 8th seed. But, will play a 3rd place team (maybe 4th technically) as a league champ. Which means nothing worse than the 6 seed in all reality. So, the inland bracket you drew up was not even worth the 20kb of disk space you used to save it on.

  • whitey

ahhh the Guru, hey coach git-back , I guess you do make a difference at SH they kinda went downhill there without your contribution

  • Sierra League

    Guru wrote:

    “Playoff Implication Games

Actually, the way I understand the Sierra league’s funky tiebreaker system, Damien can’t possibly go as a #3, only as a #2, and only if both they and South Hills upset this week.

So if we assume Chino Hills beats Ayala (things get really wierd if -that- game is an upset), the 4 possibilities are:

    1. Claremont over Damien, Charter Oak over South Hills:

    1. (tied 1st) Claremont (Head to head)
    2. (tied 1st) Chino Hills
    3. Charter Oak

    2. Claremont over Damien, South Hills over Charter Oak

    1. (tied 1st) Claremont (Head to head)
    2. (tied 1st) Chino Hills
    3. (tied 3rd) South Hills (Head to head)

    3. Damien over Claremont, South Hills over Charter Oak

    1. Chino Hills
    2. (tied 2nd) Damien (Head to Head vs both)
    3. (tied 2nd) South Hills (Head to Head vs Claremont)

    4. Damien over Claremont, Charter Oak over South Hills

    1. Chino Hills
    2. (tied 2nd) Claremont (Head to Heads cancel, win over 1st place Chino Hills puts them over {strange rule})
    3. (tied 2nd) Charter Oak (Head to head vs. Damien)

  • Smallcity

Amat has much to gain by winning. There’s a BIG difference between playing against Jordan and Santa Margarita/Mater Dei.

I thought CIF forbid any rematches from the prior years first round game. Didn’t Amat go up against MD in the first round last year?

  • smallcity

I forgot to mention that Massey just listed their new California football rankings and have Alemany at #10 (last ranked #12), Amat at #11 (last ranked #16), Mater Dei at #12, Santa Margarita at #14 and Jordan at #…………………… 221. Yes, that’s right. Two hundred twenty-one.

Guru ?????? Does this dude even have a clue as to how the CIF brackets even work? For example, he has Chino Hills playing #4 Roosevelt in the first round. There are 2 problems with this pairing alone. #1) Roosevelt will lose to Centennial and will not be a #4 Seed. #2) Let’s say Roosevelt was seeded # 4 that would mean that Chino Hills would have to be the 13th seeded team (according to 16 team bracket rules) …..are you kidding me??? This is just the beginning of the errors….there are many other mistakes your so called “guru” made (see previous posts). Posting a blog like this shows how little this person knows about sports (Ex: March Madness, NBA Playoffs, etc.) Come on Fred did you let a monkey pick these?

  • Guru….Really, Come on now

Did this so called guru ever play sports in high school, even watch them on tv, or read the sports page? There are many problems with the inland CIF pairings.

    - You have Roosevelt being seeded even though they will lose to Centennial and be a 2nd place team, drop in the polls and not seeded
    - Claremont will be the Sierra #1 team and you have them in the #9 slot and the 3rd place team they would play, Redlands in the #8 spot…….Any 1st place team will not be seeded less than 6th and never seeded less than their opponent
    - You have Chino Hills as the 13th seed even though they are ranked #5 in CIF and will probably move up to #4 after Roosevelt loses.
    - You gave Upland the #5 seed….Above Norco & Chino hills who have been ranked above them all year long.
    - You have 3rd place Etiwanda seeded 10th – higher than 2nd place Miller seeded 11th.

Did ANY thought process take place when doing this or were names drawn out of a hat? If you are going to let someone have their predictions go to print, at least make sure they have a clue…..or just let some hot Blonde in a bikini do the picking and post a picture of here doing it….at least that would have some entertainment value.

    Guru aka “SH honk”,

I must say that I am very surprised and impressed that you are taking CO over SH. I sure hope you are right on both counts, need to get by SH first and would love to see Rancho again.

  • RCcougars

We are pulling for CO also, we would like to beat them again, so we can make it 3-0-1 against them. Be careful what you wish for CO… I dont think that will be the first round match up anyway. This Guru in bracketology is all screwed up. Plus there are too many games that can change the whole bracket with a win or loss. We will find out Sunday at 10am what the real bracket will be.

  • Norco

    RCCougars…

We just qualified for the playoffs for the 25th consecutive season but wont finish any better than third in the Big VIII, creating a nightmare first-round match-up for their playoff opponent. IMO CIF will not treat Norco as a 3rd place team based on their rankings and our overall league SOS…

    BIGVII 35.1
    Sierra 26.8
    Baseline 23.5
    South Western 20.4
    CBL 16.2

This is how I would seed them..

    Team: Power Ranking: Seeding
    Corona Centennial 65.2 1
    Vista Murrieta 45.3 2
    Redlands East Valley 43.1 3
    Rancho Cucomonga 40.4 4
    Claremont 36.3 5
    Corona Roosevelt 46.3 6
    Norco 44.8 7
    Chino Hills 43.4 8
    Upland 38.6 9
    Redlands 36.4 10
    Corona 36.2 11
    Murrieta Valley 30 12
    Los Osos 27.1 13
    Charter Oak 26.9 14
    Fontana Miller 23.8 15
    Great Oak 22.1 16

  • OldMan in Chino

    Norco
I am a novice when it comes to figuring out the placements within the brackets. If I use the seeding you proposed; does #1 play # 16 and #2 play #15 etc? So if the brackets follow the pattern you have laid out does that mean that #4 Rancho Cucamonga plays #13 Los Osos? So in the first round two teams from the same league would meet? Also #8 Chino Hills plays #9 Upland ( re-match of last years Central Division semi-final game).

  • CH Husky Fan

    Norco,
I think your seedings will change when Roosevelt loses. They will drop a little I think CH and Norco move up a slot and Roosevelt drops to 8th. Also, They will not put 2 teams from the same league against each other the first round (Rancho vs. Los Osos) I don’t think they will seed Norco ahead of Chino Hills being that they are a 3rd place team and CH is ranked above them in the polls…..hard to justify that. I do think that Norco will get a 2nd place team from the Baseline, CBL or Southwest…..my guess is Upland or Redlands.

Barring any major upsets this week Azusa, Monrovia, Arroyo, and Covina will remain the four seeds respectively in the Mid-Valley. The two remaining league champsWhittier Chr and Schurrare placed to meet the 3 and 4 seeds in the 2nd round, with the better record (Whittier Chr) facing the 4, Covina.

Because CIF places the 2nd place teams on opposite sides of the bracket LP, BP, and Valley Chr go to the bottom, and TC, Mead, and BG go to the top. By record, the best 2s play each other in the empty bracket, with the worst record of the 2s playing the unseeded league champ.

That leaves the four remaining slots to be filled with At-Large teams. There are four 3rd place teams that qualify with .500+ records: MHS 7-3, SD 6-4, and Glad & LC at 5-5. No 4th place team can bump a 3rd place qualifierregardless of record (sorry, Sierra Vista). The four slots are filled in beneath the seeded teams so that there are no potential intra-league matchups in the first two rounds.

With that lengthy preface, I give you the Mid-Valley Division Playoff Bracket

    1 Azusa (M1, 10-0) vs. La Canada (RH3, 5-5)
    Bell Gardens (A2, 7-3) vs. Rosemead (MV2, 7-3)
    Whittier Chr (O1, 9-1) vs. Temple City (RH2, 5-5)
    4 Covina (VV1, 9-1) vs. Gladstone (M3, 5-5)
    3 Arroyo (MV1, 9-1) vs. Maranatha (O3, 7-3)
    Schurr (A1, 7-3) vs. Baldwin Park (VV2, 5-5)
    La Puente (M2, 8-2) vs. Valley Chr (O2, 7-3)
    2 Monrovia (RH1, 8-2) vs. San Dimas (VV3, 6-4)

    Talk amongst yourselvesIm verklempt!

  • Norco

    Oldman Chino…

CIF typically tries not too, but the shift in playoff division this year would be a headache in preventing rematches. Even though they supposedly try, it is the least of their worries. But I guess you could switch Corona with Los Osos….but hell Im confused just as much as the next guy…lol

  • Norco

I don`t think CIF will matchup Norco again with Upland since they played already…

Also like I said in an earlier post CIF will not treat Norco like a 3rd place team come seeding time based on Norcos CIF ranking, SOS and League SOS….but I agree Norco should not be seeded above CH and we will play a 2nd place team… I will say this…I feel sorry for whoever gets us in the first round…We are finally healthy …both our OG and TE are back….

  • CH Husky Fan

    Norco,
I guess we should just be happy we have this “situation” to worry about…..over half of the football teams will be done after Friday…sad time for the seniors who have busted their butts for 4 years.

  • Are you Kidding me?

Some people just don’t have a clue. There are those that are trying to figure it out, and those that think they know it all but don’t. The 2nd is much more entertaining and angering.

League #1 and #2 cannot be on the same side.
League opponents cannot meet until round 3.
The only teams that are seeded are 1 through 4. It is not a seeded bracket, after the initial 4 seeds, they fill teams in where they fit. They try to give overall seeds #1 and #2 the easier 2nd round matchup. It really is not all that difficult.

Based on the current CIF rankings in the Inland Division the seeds would be Centennial, Vista M, RC, and Roosevelt. Roosevelt and RC would flip flop so that Roosevelt and Centennial would not end up on the same side.

For the record that is based on the current rankings. When/if Roosevelt loses to Centennial this week, they could fall out of the top 4, moving everyone else up. Chino Hills cannot be seeded if Claremont isn’t (Likely Sierra #1).

In my opinion, the 4 seeds will be Centennial(1), Vista Murrieta (2), RC (3), and REV (4).

And one more thing, everyone read the original bracket wrong. It had Miller as the CBL #1, not REV.

  • RCcougars

Norco the problem with your seeding is that Osos would play RC in first round.. Will not happen. RC is ranked third and probably will keep a 3 seed if they beat Glendora Thursday Night. We lost one game this year and our starting qb did not play. Huge drop off to the second qb, just like any team. Plus I hope they do not have any rematches in the first round, it they can help it.

    1. Centenial 2. Vista Murrieta 3. Rancho Cucamonga 4. Redlands East Valley. After that it is up in the air.

It really depends on who wins and loses in the next couple of days.

Norco is 3rd in their league, but probably as good as any team that won their league. I think it is Centenial then everyone else is about even.

  • RCcougars

ONe more thing for Los Osos to even get in they have to beat Upland Friday night, then there would be a coin flip between Etiwanda, Upland and Osos. Loser being left out of the playoffs. Like I said before it will all work its way out after the next couple of days.
