Sunday’s playoff pairings set the table for the magical four weeks that follow

You can access the CIF-SS playoff brackets on the Section website during the following times listed below Sunday. I will post the brackets later that afternoon, but between now and then, discuss it all you want. Who gets the four Mid-Valley wild card berths? How far will Bishop Amat fall and will they get a first round home game, which is a 50-50 proposition now? With so many fans on pins and needles, remember what the Guru predicted in his mock draft. He had the Amat-Alemany loser facing the Santa Margarita-Mater Dei winner in the first round. Santa Margarita won 17-7. Guess we’ll find out if he’s right tomorrow. Where will they send Charter Oak? Did Bonita do enough to give the Hacienda two top four seeds along with giant West Covina? And for our own silly purposes, is there a new No. 1 in Tuesday’s final regular season Trib poll?

    wow Amat better hope they dont have to face Santa Margarita. That is a first round loss. I think the Amat schedule made them look better than they appear.

    Hope W.C. and Bohi are in different halves of the brackets. Dbar over ER for wild card. They earned it. Any ranked team should hope to avoid first round game against Muir. Arcadia a tough team to figure. La Mirada- W.C. final would be a great game. I think POY should be a player deep in the trenches maybe an offensive lineman from W.C. or a linebacker from Bonita. Santa Fe looks ready to go deep in the playoffs. Southeast is going to be fun next week. Enjoy it players!!!

    Now with the results in from friday, the issues going on within Wilson can play a major factor in the playoffs. With El Monte lossing and going 4-6 and finishing in third place. Wilson’s game can make the difference in making the playoffs. Espically since a team has to win at least 5 games to be elgible for one of the four at large berths.

    I laugh at those that talk about Amat’s schedule. Garfield is the #8 seed in the City D1 playoffs and Venice is #3. No one on Amat’s schedule was as bad as Diamond Ranch – SM’s 1st game of the year or Canyon (who Glendora beat up). Muirs showing what they’re capable of and Amat was Dominguez only loss.     In looking a the Gurus playoff brackets, this loss may very well have been a very good thing in a way, because it keep us out of a bracket where most of the heavy hitters are.

    First of all, lets look at the playoff brackets according to the the way the Guru broke it down the other day.

    In our grouping we have:

    Mission Viejo vs LB Wilson winner playing Crespi vs Los Altos
    Amat vs Santa Margarita winner playing LB Poly vs San Clamente

    In the other grouping we have:

    Alemany vs Jordan winner playing Edison vs Mater dai
    Lakewood vs Tessoro winner playing Servite vs Newport Harbor

    Personally, I think we got a better draw because knowing that Santa Margarita has two losses already this season, I am thinking we get a home game there. Anyway, all of you already know we are unbeatable at home, so lets look at the next game. Amat vs the winner of San Clemente vs LB poly.

    Tell me folks, how much more motivation do we really need when it comes to Poly ? Do any of you remember that game where theyre players refused to shake our hands at the end of that last one ? I remember and you can bet that we really clean their clocks this time around even if we have to go back to Veterans stadium for that one.

    So then, what we have is a potential set up game with Mission Viejo. To tell you the truth, I would rather have Mission Viejo at home than Servite on the road.

    Bottom line is that I think our road to the championship might not be as bad as we think. The only problem is we may have to go up against perhaps the greatest high school coach in recent memory. But hey, maybe he has an off day ??

    Bonita secured the two or three seed last night with La Serna taking one of them. The fourth seed will be going to La Mirada. The reasoning behind this is Bonita cannot be seeded on the same side of the Bracket as West Covina. Bonita’s 38-10 win over Diamond Ranch is also way more impressive than La Mirada’s 33-20 win over Bellflower.

    If you say that the win doesn’t look good because Chase Price wasn’t there, then I’ll tell you this: Diamond Ranch still had Jacoby Carter and Andrew Fischer. Also in the final poll Diamond Ranch was ranked 6th and Bellflower wasn’t close.

    I’ll admit to being an occasional scold, drives my kids bats. Maybe being an old fart means little patience with trash talk and self serving shenanigans. Last night, after a tough football game, I saw the other side of the coin.

    Following a punishing 38-10 loss to Bonita, Diamond Ranch Head Coach Roddy Layton had his Panthers take a knee behind his Coaches and face the opposing sideline while the BoHi band led the Bearcat players in their Alma Mater, an extraordinary display of grace and class, things that are increasingly hard to find on prep football fields these days. Most of the time, what you see of the team with the lower score, (no way I’m calling these boys losers today), when the horn blows is either a quick ass chewing or an even quicker exit to the bus.

    While not much of a DR guy over the years, (although I do admit to a high degree of admiration for things Goodwin and Lengyel), you can now add me to the list of Roddy Layton admirers.

    Cov80 I can actually agree wit u on the possibility of coach t gettin coach of the yr. big win over west co n a record of 9-1… but #5 for covina is not as impressive as #1 from bp.#1 from bp gets the mvp. That kid all yr either got dbl teamed or bracketed n still made things happen. On another note Covina woke up the eyes of baldwin park players both mentally n physically. the offense is peaking at the right time. 49,57,45 are the the points that were scored in the last three games. In the tourney its about who gets hot at the right time so dont be surprised if bp goes deep in the playoffs. N I am 100% sure that covina will not make it past the 2nd rd… too many close games during regular season. against good teams they have played well no doubt about that but against teams that they are suppose to blow out they struggle… all that tells me is that they dont have a killer instict. wouldnt be surprised if they lose a close one in the playoffs against a team that they would be heavily favored in… just saying

    I think what matters most for Amat is getting a home game. The opponent is going to be difficult either way since it’s gonna be another second-place team. But the Lancers seem to be a touchdown better at home. You don’t really see that in HS. Maybe it’s the smell of kettlecorn.

    Just spoke with Thom Simmons from CIF and he had no clue about any forfeit or illegal activity at Wilson. CerebruM, I must agree with your bracket. Seems about right. Maranantha not a good draw for LP if that is what happens. Arroyo versus Village Christian is a possible upset. BP beats Schurr or any other team they draw in the first round. They are the Dark Horse.

    Look out for BP, you are an IDIOT if you think your guy is MVP over Venegas. Covina is 9-1 and the Valle Vista League Champs and Vinny single handedly closed the door on any chances of you guys beating us during our game and your guy was NON-EXISTENT on offense and on defense during the Covina/Baldwin Park game. Vinny plays RB, WR, DB, and returns PUNTS and KICKOFFS and has 20 TD’s this year with another 5-6 picks on defense to add to his offensive domination in the Valle Vista. Who cares what you have done against Wilson and Northview as they are the cellar of our league. Vinny was a part of everyone in the leagues defensive plan to try and stop and he still scored 3 TD’s in the championship game against SD, and also has a 5 TD game this year. COV80, you are absolutely right, Coach T for COY and Vinny Venegas for MVP. Who was talking about these two before the season began and notice that everyone that has seen Vinny play has nothing but praised him and who is talking about your guy? NO ONE but you. #5 is one of the best players in the valley. Vinny Venegas is the MVP!

    GLADSTONE = 33-0
    EL MONTE = 31-0
    WILSON = 36-16
    NOGALES = 41-21
    and wins over WC, BP, and SD. Whether or not Covina gets past he 2nd round, your comment is totally off and makes no sense whatsoever so please leave the intelligent comments to those that actually speak the fact and not with their heart. BP has underachieved and will not make an impact in the playoffs.

    Have to say Coach of the Year candidates are to about two: Coach Podley and Coach Thomas, Coaches that would also be in consideration are Coach Scherf, Coach Haggerty, and Coach Maggiore. Depending on what Claremont does in the playoffs I might throw in Coach Collins.

    Coaches that none of us expected to win at all Coach Duncan, Bassett; and Coach Flemming, Ganesha.

    Play all the senarios with Amats next match up I dont care. What is great is Amat will play next week and that is more then I can say for alot of teams out there right now that are on the outside looking in. Losing to Alemany was huge for the seeding but it is what it is and to Amat fans , players and coaches losing your first game of the season on the last game of the season and being 9-1 is truly remarkable. It does not matter who Amat draws we are in the tournament. Haters will always be in here taking there 50/50 chance of going with the team Amat plays against hoping to come in here and say I told you so but they never come in here when Amat wins which is more often then that one loss yesterday. Amat will bring it Friday , on the road or at home they will show to play and play hard. This loss could be a good thing as Amats thirst for a victory will grow with this loss yesterday. All I can say is the team that draws Bishop Amat in round one is playing a very dangerous team. This Amat team will come in hungry. I am sure the opposing coach will know he is getting a 9-1 team and a team coming off their first loss.

    Should have been some other titles for Covina (05-06) At least CIF is getting some things right.

    But I’m wicha Covina 76. The colts are overdue for another title.

    COY….Like anyone else here I am partial. My opinion is that it comes down to 4. AZUSA, COVINA, WEST COVINA, and AMAT. Now…figure in which team THIS SEASON is the biggest surprise to be where they are at. Biased? HELL YES…just like every one else.

    POY… Bised again. Vinny. There are MANY great players this year. Too many to list. I could not vote subjectively because I have see first hand Vinny do things that left me with my jaw open. I am blinded by what I have seen personally. I think anyone else that watches this young man first hand would be biased too. Yeah…He’s THAT GOOD.

    Just for laughs….Vinnys career goal is to be a millionaire ( Program notes ). If he goes after life like he does sports he’ll get there.

    10-0in the Montciew is like 5-5 in the Valle Vista and worst in any other league.. You must be cousins with the dude from BP. Your coach doesn’t have ONE win thats even close to that of a Baldwin Park or a San Dimas, let alone a victory against West Covina. Nobody gave Covina a chance against WC and week in and week out, Coach Thomas had to answer the call from all the doubters. In the weak Montview it was just a matter of how much Azusa would beat up on poor Duarte (who has 20 kids in their whole program), Bassett, and Happy Rock. Please, please dont bring your weak ass argument for Azusa’s coach for Coach of the Year. People are getting tired of hearing about your 10-0 season against Sisters of the Sacred Heart HS.

    Top Bracket:

    #1 Mission Viejo(10-0)
    #4 Bishop Amat(9-1)

    Bottom Bracket:

    #3 Alemany(10-0)

    The reason I see Amat as the number 4th seed is the obvious, No other team other than Lakewood has the same record for a top 4 seed. But due to Long Beach Poly having a 8-2 record and being the Moore league Champions, not even Poly (8-2)record should have them at the 4th seed if the second team Lakewood has a better record at (9-1). Given that, Amat as remain, for over a month at the the Pac-5 number #3 ranking and the #4 ranking Alemany beat Amat, so Amat should not be dropped to anything less than the number #4 seed. Santa Margarita is the #2 Trinity at (8-2) and #3 Mater Dei is at (6-4).

    Despite who Amats gets, be it Tesoro, Santa Margarita, or even Mater Dei, Amat should secure a home game and probably travel to either Poly or San Clemente or whoever they meet in the second round.

    Yes, Amat vs Poly would be great with the winner to meet #1 Mission Viejo, and we know what Mission Viejo did to Poly a 37-7 spanking during the regular season.

    If all goes as planned, I see either Crespi playing either Mission Viejo or Servite in the quarter finals and Alemany playing Servite in the semi-final with Bishop Amat playing Mission Viejo in the Semi-finals possibly at Amat.

    This would be the the Pac 5 Semi-final match ups. If Amat gets Mission Viejo at home for the Semi-final believe me, it’s either a home record of 16-0 for Hags or Hags gets his first lost at home at 15-1. In any event, we know what can happen at home. It happen with St.Bonnie. Would that be something if Alemany beats Servite in the Semi-final and Amat upsets Mission Viejo for a all Serra League showdown for the Pac 5 championship. Believe me, Amat would love to get revenge after what those refes did. Pay back is a “perra” female dog, for you non speaking brothers.     Coach Thomas is coach of the year….and well deserved! I can’t believe anyone would think he doesn’t deserve it! That does not mean that there aren’t other coaches out there who could have been as deserving, but don’t take anything away from Coach Thomas! He is an outstanding football coach, mentor, and friend to his players. He has had a winning season that surprised most of us! Let the man enjoy his honor…..he earned it!

    What good did it do Montebello to play a tough preseason, when a team like Gladstone can lose every preseason game and then get 5 pathetic wins in the sorriest league in the Valley. I understand the 5 win rule and the third place rule, but here’s guessing teams will now look at preseason a little different. Great job by BP to get 2nd because with that preseason a loss to San Dimas and they’d be forced to watch Gladstone in their spot.

    Gladstone will get Monrovia, not Covina. I know you guys are trying to avoid it, but you will be getting the Olympic #3. Unless by some miracle, CIF puts you as one of the top two seeds, your gonna have a tougher road than that.

    Look at it a little like this. Top college teams play a weak schedule, for the most part, for a reason. There is nothing to gain by getting beat up both physically and in the polls. I’ve always advocated playing 1 maybe 2 (and that’s an iffy 2) tough pre-season games just to see where you stand and to prep.

    Amat/MV and Servite/Alemany are highly unlikely to happen. Even if It was possible to draw MV, there is no way Amat would be at home.

    You might want to check that number 4 seed in the PAC-5 again. Next time just worry about Bonita’s place in the playoffs instead of things you know nothing about. You have been coyly slighting Amat all season and here’s a prime example. Picking an 8-2 LB Poly over a 9-1 Amat as a higher seed . Look at it with facts instead of thru hater eyes.

    Not really a hater at all, I’ve actually enjoyed Amat games at Kiefer stadium. The simplest logic for me was that LB Poly hadn’t lost in a long time and Amat’s loss was well less than 48 hours ago.

    Amat will be on the road in the second round. The only way Amat would get a second home game is listed below. Amat still has to get to the Semis, lets take it one game at time.

    vs MV – coin toss
    vs Wilson – home game
    vs Edison – coin toss if Edision defeats Wilson
    Home game if Edison defeats MV
    vs SM – home game if SM defeat MV
    coin toss if SM defeats Wilson

    CIF does coin flips to determine home games if both teams played on the road or at home the previous week.

    Hope W.C. and Bohi are in different halves of the brackets. Dbar over ER for wild card. They earned it. Any ranked team should hope to avoid first round game against Muir. Arcadia a tough team to figure. La Mirada- W.C. final would be a great game. I think POY should be a player deep in the trenches maybe an offensive lineman from W.C. or a linebacker from Bonita. Santa Fe looks ready to go deep in the playoffs. Southeast is going to be fun next week. Enjoy it players!!!
