State Playoffs: You mean St. Lucy’s and Chino Hills might do this again? Part IV? Why not

St. Lucy’s was awarded the top seed in the Southern California Division Division II bracket after defeating Chino Hills in four sets to claim Saturday’s Division 2AA title. The Huskies didn’t fall far, earning a third seed, meaning if they both advance two rounds in the state playoffs, they would meet at St. Lucy’s on Nov. 30 for the Southern California Regional Final, with the winner advancing to the state finals at the Event Center at San Jose State University. What I love about the state playoffs is that the lower seed is always at home, something the CIF-SS should consider instead of coin flips, I’m all for rewarding home games to teams that had the best regular seasons. In the first-round however, champions are at home, which is why Chino Hills is still on the road in the first round. In any case, wouldn’t it be great to do watch these two go at it again? First-round games are Tuesday night. I need the volleyball experts to tell us if we’ve got a shot at St. Lucy’s-Chino Hills IV. That Troy (29-1) looks dangerous, but the Huskies would get Troy at home.

Southern California Division II Regional

  • St. Lucy’s/Chino Hills in the Regionals…

There is a very real chance that both St. Lucy’s and Chino Hills can be in the Regional Game on November 30th.

St. Lucy’s and Chino Hills have the best chance of any to meet up one more time. As they should. These are some of the best teams around.

St. Lucy’s (30-9-see maxprep) should do well at their brother school Damien High School Tuesday night. Chino Hills should destroy Palisades and both teams should advance to this Saturday.

The three best days of the year: Christmas, Easter and the CIF-SS Volleyball Finals. A day and a match of volleyball at its highest level. I will not write about Marymount shutting down REV and their star, nor the Poly team that dominated Set 1; only to get a little complacent before stepping it up, nor the error filled game of Rim. I know what paper this is.
St Lucys v Chino Hills (Rd. 3)-It was clear that St Lucys was the better team this day. They seemed to get off to a slow start but never lost focus and proved they were going to battle. And battle they did. No one got down on themselves or other teammates. I only heard words of encouragement for the next ball directed at the SL players by their teammates and coaches. This is a lesson that Im sure a lot of teams can learn from. No back-biting, no negative comments, no dirty looks or sad faces.only a determination to win the next point.
Chino Hills got excellent play from a number of key players-Siko (Cal State Univ-Bakersfield), Haebe (Uncommitted) and Trueman (Jr). Siko was perhaps the most athletically talented player on the team. She seemed to get to every ball and always in proper position. Trueman was virtually unstoppable and led her team in kills and played solid defense. Haebe provided another stellar showing in the back row-almost refusing to let any ball drop. They should all be proud of their run. They just happened to get a St Lucys team that played or scrapped a little more.
St Lucys-What can you say that Fred did not already say. Dalton (West Point), as her coach points out, is/was the go to player. She has great court awareness and you can tell she is the leader of that team as she kept her teammates focused and played like a champion. Middles Young (Sacred Heart) and Callen (Univ of No Florida) were huge on both sides of the net-Blocks and Kills, Blocks and Kills. Macy (Jr) worked the ball around effectively making very good decisions. Rivera (Jr) showed her aggressiveness in getting to many balls others would stand no chance. Hogarth (Jr) contributed with some timely kills in her front line rotations. Warmington (Jr) was a difference maker. Her play was nothing short of outstanding. Sifuentes (Jr) matched her counterpart dig for dig and pancake for pancake. She was determined that no ball hit the floor in front of her. Bast (Fr) was exceptional. Her serves forced CH into sending back free balls. Her aggressiveness in the back row cannot be overlooked. Notice a trend here.underclasswomen.
The differences did not stop there. There was a noticeable difference in the way the crowds (mostly student sections) handled themselves. The St Lucys students (and their counterparts) cheered loudly for their favorites. On the other hand, the Chino Hills students were an embarrassment. They shouted obscenities at the opponent (I finally had to move to the top row of their stands) and required a stoppage in the game to retrieve items thrown on the court. All of this while the Staff sat back and did nothing. What a fine example of my tax dollars hard at work.
Good luck to both teams. Dont overlook any opponent, regardless of what some nameless/faceless Bloggers might say. Play hard and treat us to CHHS v SLPHS (Rd 4).
St Lucys players and coaches-Wear your RINGS with great pride as only you know what you had to do to earn them.

    ………………………………………

It was embarrassing to see 3 yellow jacket security guards between the Chino Hills fans and the volleyball court during the fourth game. Nice job in distracting the Chino Hills team, the crowd’s actions only hurt the team. It took away from a great match between two great teams.

    Robert,

The Chino Hills HS student section has behaved this way all year and have been referred to the CIF office at least once this year – sad that it continues to occur.

  • It starts from the top down….

After the 1st game between SL/CH, some of the fans wrote the raunchiest comments. The CH Home match was accompanied with vivazuelas (which are banned by CIF) and their pit chanting “overrated” to the SL team through most of the match and for the other part yelled obscenities to the SL players before every serve.

Second match, SL won in five and the CH Fans continued their bashing through blogs saying ” we still swept you the first time,”. Declaring the rematch so CH could show SL who is boss on any other court but a home court. Fans writing in, giving their full name and giving their expert advice of why CH was better, One fan accused SL of being afraid of Chino Hills.

But at the end of the day, St. Lucy’s team won, not once but twice and did so with class. Not one of the SL blogs were distasteful, derrogatory or belittling to the CH team. If the parents are advocating this kind of behavior then its not to shocking that the pit/fans would behave that way too.

The security came at match point and CH trailed the entire fourth set.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let’s not make this about some unruly teens. This section should be about the GIRLS.
Don’t make me regret my post.

  • Thank you

Thank you Robert for your awesome words about St. Lucy’s. I know you have been a longtime follower of volleyball and part of the volleyball blogging community for sometime and that is about the greatest compliment I have ever heard you give the Regents and it is appreciated. And I agree with your assessment. Amazing kids on this team and there is some incredible talent that will stay for next years team too.

    Good luck in State Regents!

  • fans

CH fans did not represent their home town of Chino very well.

  • Fair Weather Fans

I find it interesting that there is now talk about the CH fans when this entire season CH’s has used that to their home court advantage, packing into smaller gyms in an attempt to intimidate other teams. It was all fine and good when they were winning, but now after a loss, it is embarassing? Really? Where was your integrity before now.

In a way I have to thank you, because you woke the sleeping giant and made sure that SL’s had that gym packed, and our fans came out in droves! Nice job to all those that came out to support SL’s and did it with class. That is the way it should be done! The Damien/St. Lucy’s family is strong!

  • Damien student

How well do you think St. Lucy’s will have against number 2 St. Francis or number 3 Presentation if St. Lucy’s did make it to the state finals?

  • Robert, the Town Cryer

Robert YOU brought it up. Last year Damein played Eisenhower and had a letetr sent to CIF regarding their insulting behavior. *Let’s NOT relive that incident ) They are kids, you’re right but last year no one was saying Damein had class, on the conntrary a former retired teacher took exception and was railed on this same blog as being uptight.

Most people know the smartest and most heavily funded students act up the most, as if it’s tehir birth right. Think about Stanford, Duke and other similar schools wh roputinely cross the line of good taste and get forgiven while lesser advanteged schools get called far worst.

It was a heated event with more fans than usual, fans ironically that aren’t aware of the bonds bewteen the two programs, going over several off season years.

Call it what it was….kids being overwhelmed by their environment and 3embarssing innocent individuals.

Robert either you painted with too braod a brush or you should have addressed teh proper authorities and left it at that. Wait…i9sn’t taht what the Eisenhower former teacher did?

    Your call.

  • SL Fan

Damien has one of the best PIT’s hands down. Even Fred had to give a shout out in his basketball blog. I was at the Ike Game and Damien wasn’t that bad. The Big D pit is reminiscent of a Stanford prankster group. They were actually very tame at the St. Lucy’s game compared to what they are capable of. Not sure what we will see tonight given the game is actually at Damien. School is out so it should be tame.

But all this discussion of the fans is useless. Neither side was ever a factor. Chino Hills ” village idiots” in their pit didn’t have any ammunition, especially in the fourth game.

This blog is about the girls, and Robert did an excellent job recapping what went down and who stood out.

St. Lucy’s has been the most balanced team in the area this year. Every position could go toe to toe and then some with any team in this area. From the OH (Dalton), to the reigning middles (Young & Callen), standout OPP Warmington, stellar setter (Macy) and backrow DS & Libero (SiFuentes, Rivera, Bast). They have it covered.

My additional two cents would be I didn’t hear Robert mention Chino Hills setter (Anderson) who I believe was a standout at Saturdays game.

    Go Regents!!!

  • VillageIdiot

    Robert, the Town Cryer
What a great comparison………….A high school football game with 4 or 5 times the attendance to an indoor volleyball game. What’s next….are you going to tell us the oil spot on your driveway is like the BP Gulf spill. Come on, Robert made his observations and even later asked that the blog be about the GIRLS. If you want one about rowdy crowds, ask Fred to open another blog and you can post away.

  • Hooked on Phonics…..

Yes Village Idiot, please read what SL Fan said.

Do you have anything to add Village Idiot about the girls or more running commentary about something else that everyone has declared to be a nonsubject?

So hey, back to the girls. What are the chances of SL or CH moving forward to the next round?

  • WhyNot

CH beat Palisaides in three. We haven’t heard any news on SL. ‘Assuming they won….

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
