Ms. Hinckleys book Watercolor Basics: Painting Flowers is a delight to read. At first glance her paintings seem to have been created so effortlessly they can be intimidating (how can I ever paint this well! ). But only for a moment. Her writing is so warm and friendly, and the techniques presented so clearly and sometimes whimsically (check out the painting at the bottom of page 29one of my favorites) that youve absorbed a host of tricks and tips before you know it. From valuable advice on materials, organization, palette arrangement and mixing strategies to step-by-step demonstrations that culminate in truly breathtaking results (Calla Lilies, pages 118-121, is my absolute favorite for its depth and richness) I have never had an instruction book offer so much helpful information while being such an enjoyable read.

Damien...not sure what "booked out" means?

If you're saying he "flunked out" or was put on probation that's news to me. Nevertheless it doesn't dismiss my point that gifted kids have choices and those choices speak to the individual's upbringing...that was my point.

By way of making "your" point...if I understand your point correctly ....has something to do with failure ...right?

Look no further than another Damien Trojan, full ride kid, who lost his way but by the accounts I've heard is making a remarkable comeback...let's hope for the best for any student who get's into the "deep end of the pool", so to speak, and realizes too late that they've lost their bearings.

Interesting story about Damien, one that I've shared before and one that I haven't but makes mention of this issue.

When my son interviewed with Harvard a "good" friend came up to him and told him directly, 'I hate you because I know it's true. You don't deserve to get into Harvard" My son will graduate from USC this coming May...so I think he did alright if he did it in four years with out a problem.

The other story, new to most, is another "good" friend had similar feelings and once told my son, "I should have had that spot at SC..and not you".

Well the kid went to a shcool up North and lo and behold became that school's Sports Editor...a position ironically he probably wouldn't have had at USC if I understand things correctly.

Point being every school isn't for "EVERYBODY" ...sometimes things happen for a reason. I'm glad my son went to school locally and even more proud that get accomplished so much while there instead of being an all too common "couldn't cut it" statistic. Besides I liek teh example my son sets for his siblings, balancing a rich social life witha rigorus academic work load.

Now I'm secretly hoping "booked out" means Ryan graduiated early and considering Stanford was interested in him...it wouldn't surprise me. Plus his dad is a great guy.

BTW Damein's Harper, another Damein student, was in the papers recently as well. Still think he'd had done better at Georgetown but that's why we raise "great" kids...to make grown up decisions. Best to D. Hartp who is killing in the classroom if not on the field. A USC Accounting degree is still in high demand, so he'll do just fine.

Best of luck to the students who understand that life isn't "high school" any more that blogging is Greek Philosphy. I know far too many high school phenoms who look back at high school and wish it never ended.

Ryan McMahon got booked out of SC.

It really says csome thing when it athlete turns dow a school like Stanford. She must eb an incredible individual to make that choice. Kudos to her family for obviously doing an outstanding job in developing an inspirational student athlete.

Damien had a similar athlete in Ryan Mc Mahon who chose USC over Stanford. While Stanford might be enjoying a better season, UCLA like USC, are no slouches and speaks to the athletes willingness to compte in front of friends and family. Teh least we can do is supprt them during tehir careers and cheer for them from teh stands.

Excuse my spelling, considering i'm talking about "eliite" schools you'd think i'd give it more thought...but you get the point.

Congratulations! What an accomplishment and good luck on your journey in ebcoming a Bruin.
