This year’s Tribune all-area football and all-emcompassing San Gabriel Valley team to be published in TribXtra magazine

We’re in the process of selecting the 2010 Tribune All-Area football team, which includes player and coach of the year and the top 25 position players, but there will be a twist, it will not be published in the newspaper. Instead, we’re publishing the all-area team in our TribXtra magazine that will run the first week of January and be available to all subscribers and those who wish to buy a copy from the racks or in our office at the Tribune. The magazine will include a first-ever prestigious San Gabriel Valley all-encompassing top 25 football players selected from the Tribune and Star-News coverage areas. The best part, however, is we will still honor and picture traditional all-area teams from the Tribune and Star-News. Essentially, what you have is three teams, the All-Encompassing all-area and the Tribune and Star-News all-area selections all in one magazine, which includes coach and player of the year from each area. There is not “one” player of the year from each area, instead, the cover will feature the player of the year from the Star-News and Tribune. With more space to work with, we also will select for the first time offensive and defensive players of the year, one each from the Star-News and Tribune coverage areas. It’s a huge project and a lot of fun, but we think the players, fans and families will enjoy it. When I get a firm publication date, I will pass it along.

  • One question

So the Tribune will offer this service and publication for what female sport? Will it be for volleyball, basketball, water polo, soccer, softball, swimming or track and field? Just curious.

  • AMAT 73

    Fred J ,
Maybe since there will be plenty of room in the magazine you could give us some insight as to how you guys go about picking the players for these lists. Like a point system for int.,yards rushing, and so forth .I know I have seen many times bloggers questioning your choices when the clear cut favorite was overlooked and I am speaking for all players not just AMAT as I don’t think we will have more than a couple on the lists. I think it would help us, the bloggers ,understand what led you to choose a certain player over another who might have equal or better numbers.

  • FredJ

    One question
The TribXtra is for FOOTBALL only…all other all-area teams for girls volleyball, cross country, water polo and tennis will run in the newspaper like in years past, nothing changes on that front.

    Amat 73
Between Steve Ramirez, Miguel Melendez, Aram and myself we decide on the team. We look at stats but keep in mind the level of competition and what we remember covering games. We also look at the all-league lists to see how coaches voted. Basically, we sit down and put the teams together factoring in all of it.

  • Who would have guessed ….

So basicly what you are saying is the team will be made up of players from the popular teams in the area that the tribune choices to cover their games. O ye I’m sorry and their is no accountability to your picks.

    Sounds about right…..

  • FredJ

The accountability is with us….popular teams? You mean successful teams

  • MAL

These comments are ridicules they are trying to offer something extra for area football teams, fans and families. Yes some people will get overlooked but nobody questions selections for the all-pro teams and college all-American list they are all voted through media. This is the same thing just on a smaller scale. I’m not always thrilled with who the paper covers and who they don’t however they usually cover the best teams and as I tell players all the time nobody cares about a great player on a bad team. Lastly, as a former girls coach I understand the need for more recognition for female sports and I wish there was however this is not a public institution the paper does not have to provide title nine protection. This is a private newspaper and is entitled to create anything that will help their business and serve their customers. If you don’t agree or don’t like it you can do a few things, either create your own, don’t buy the tribune newspaper or stop complaining and get over it.

  • AMAT 73

    Fred J ,
Thanks for the info . I almost didn’t want to post the question for fear the avalanche of idiots who would find some way to knock how you choose, ala mr. who would have guessed .

  • Aaron

I’m going to try and limit it to five guys from Bonita. One of them being without a doubt Eric Mikity, kid has just been a beast this year. However with those same five guys I will put up two from other schools that would be deserving. Just to show you that I’m not a complete homer.

  • Wells

Who would have guessed — It is predictable that you would focus on one of four criteria for the selection process. It said that four people using four criteria would select players to honor them.

There will always be some bias, but you are like so many people in these blogs…another uninformed person that wants accountability without leaving his name…to monitor his accountability.

  • LANCER 4 LIFE

Fred: Does a second team SERRA ALL LEAGUE carry more weight than any of the local first team all leaguers!

  • FredJ

It depends who the local all-leaguers were and how important they were to their teams success. Every year, every case is different.

    One Answer -

When your sport starts selling newspapers like good old fashion Boys American Football does. That’s when…!

  • kh

how about best band and cheerleader squads.
    its part of football.
sante fe band kicked ass brother.

  • Aaron

Lancer 4 Life…easy answer is that it should not. So please stop wading through your own BS.

  • Bulldog Parent

I agree with kh(never thought those words would come out of my mouth)Santa Fe’s band was awesome!! I guess I am biased but West Covina’s cheerleaders are great! Amazing job this season ladies!

  • Colt74

I think this will be a very welcome belated Christmas Gift to the player, their families, and the fans.

This would probably be a logistics nightmare but how cool would it be to give autographed by all players, copies to the Coach(s) and Player(s) of the year. Tell me that would not be cool. Something to ponder anyway.

  • Lancer#76

    LANCER4LIFE

Please stop drawing attention to me.

I’m still pumping myself up for the All Area Votes!

  • kh

cheerleaders,,s.d. girls rocked, man the flips they did at half was cool.

  • AMAT 73

    Aaron,
Did you bother to read where Fred relied to my question of a criteria list they use and wrote they keep in mind the level of competition and also look at all league lists to see how coaches voted. So your easy answer is wrong and what BS are you wading thru in that reply to LANCER 4 LIFE. This is some what similar to you seeing all those supposed anti Pendleton posts by AMAT bloggers.

  • Aaron

Notice how I registered my user name? Now I just have to

You know what I’m saying though right? That being second team in the Serra shouldn’t be weighted more than 1st in the Montview. Based on what Fred said is he’s going to attempt to weigh things subjectively and how much a certain player impacts the team. If his impact is truly greater and he’s a second teamer for all league he can still be all-valley because all league is voted by the coaches.

    It’s about selecting subjectively right?

Like two people I’d select as RBs would be Jalen Moore and Chris Solomon.

  • just sayin’

It’s clear that the Lineman of the Year in the Serra League (the 6th toughest league in the NATION) doesn’t have to drum up any Fish Bowl All Area votes with anybody that knows anything about football – which leaves you out.

  • Lancer#76

I agree with Mr. Aaron. 2nd team in the Serra League means nothing for All Area.

And somebody please explain to me how is it that the Serra League is the 6th Toughest league in the NATION. Uh, that would be you Mr. just sayin’ Please step up.

I mean Amat played all the powerhouse Defenses in our far far superior Serra League this year. PAC 5 teams Like:
    - Loyola (0 – 4) gave up more than 25 points 7 times.
    - Notre Dame (1 – 3) gave up more than 30 points 6 times.
    - And Crespi (2 – 2) gave up more than 25 points 8 times. EIGHT TIMES!

and of course, lets not forget how we beat all our Step Up non-league games like:
    - Garfield who gave up more than 20 points 7 times
    - Damien who gave up more than 25 points 6 times
    AND
    - Cathedral who gave up more than 30 points 5 times

Sorry SGV! I respect all of you, but we are the best in the SGV because we play the best in the country! Just look at our far far superior Serra League and our Step Up non league schedule.

We CAN’T win, but we play the best!

  • just sayin’

    simple answer

    http://calpreps.com/2010/ratings/National_leagues.htm

the next closest Fish Bowl league was the Sierra that came in at – #102

  • not many more stairs

when you finish the season as the #9 ranked team in the highest division and you played 3 of the teams above you – there’s not much room to “step up”?

  • Colt74

The WEIGHT should consider in order:

    1. Which team(s) won CIF in their division
    2. Which team(s) won their league
    3. Overall records
    4. Which teams fans fed Fred, Aram, Steve, Mike, and Tom
    5. Which teams were hospitable to Mike

  • AMAT 73

    Aaron,
Yes I know what you mean and agree with you but we don’t choose the teams and the people that do use their criteria not ours. So in essence LANCER4LIFE’S post was a valid question and no wading thru bs at all unless you put a spin on it which you did.
    oneanddone,
If you really think 76 is from AMAT then you are a bigger idiot than I first thought you were. So maybe you should take it easy with toasting with the nation as I will not drink from their cups . What is probably the truth is you ,76, and notsince are all the same person. As far as the rankings you speak of they don’t mean a thing as I have always said the only ranking that matters in the number one ranking in CIF after the season is over. As far as POY my vote goes to the Bulldog ( maybe same team you root for ) leading the charge George Johnson. I said he would lead them at the beginning of the season to the title and I still stand by that .The one thing you have right is that our season is over which isn’t even in this discussion and I have yet to see any true AMAT supporter, not these fakes who you back and protect, post anything different. Funny you write the fishbowl is getting impatient with AMAT , well at least you know your place KINGFISH since you are speaking for the bowl you swim in.

  • IE TOWN

Guys like Aaron and Kh don’t understand the meaning of strength of schedule. It quite different for a player to play in their fishbowl and pound their chest than play in a much tougher division. Just ask CO and SH.

You guys are lucky there gone! Because the reality is, it just might be a different picture for Bonita if CO was still around!

I would love to see Bonita try and that’s a BIG TRY to play Amat. Are you kidding me?

Again KH and Aaron boy, schedule us please..

  • jmcdonough

    Fred,
Does this mean we are breaking tradition by picking a poy that is combined by the star news area and the sgv tribunes areas. So this new honor is no longer the “Tribunes Player of the Year”. I think that is sad. I know I personally just follow the sgv teams that are featured in the tribunes articles and blog. Now I am going to feel lost by not being familiar with the star news teams and players. I personally

think you should not fix something that isn’t broken. Love the magazine idea. But I think it was so special opening up the paper and seeing your sons face on the front top headlines. It was special.
    Amat 73″
I agree with you about George Johnson. He is truly a stud. I’ve watched him play since he was a little boy. He played for me in the vikings for years. He is very similar to mikey. He is tough as hell not afraid to run. He is definately a play maker. Will step up in big games. Excellent athlete….he has my vote. I believe he should have received more coverage. Me and mikey will be at his game cheering him on.
Good luck wc…jmcd. Congratulations George and Georgie. That day we saw you at chilies , it seems our wishes on that day for georgie have come to pass. Were proud of you…beyond words…and truly
from the heart another viking son with great success! Go bulldogs!!

  • FredJ

No, we’re not breaking from tradition, there is no all encompassing player of the year award. The cover will feature the Tribune and Star-News player of the year. The all-encompassing SGV team will be players taken from the Tribune and Star-News all-area teams.

  • the truth

    Thanks, co bro

love to hear about success stories after high school.

How is Chris Allen and Muema doing??

For those still crying about league changes, its time to step it up against your level of competition. No more CO or SH and how they would do in the Hacienda division. The new sheriff in town is W. Covina which will now get the recruits given that nice field and great coaching.

CO, well good luck, I enjoy the team and think the world of the coaches and now they are exactly where they belong. Its to bad that all the other sports do have to go with them. But thats the price you pay for football revenue sport success along with all the headlines and quotes they used to get.

I am sure Amat will get there fair share of all areas. No need to over lobby amat bloggers , you have distinct advantages over all others:

    1. highly visible program
    2. best and loyal fans
    3. tribune loves you due to the support and participation
    4. Solid football program that does play tough competition

Just remember these are high school kids and many are deserving even if other leagues. Those kids work as hard or harder to excel.

    The truth out

  • strength of league

I suppose you have to take into account strength of league as a use of measure. Based on CalPreps, this how the SGV leagues rank nationally:

    Serra 6th
    Sierra 102nd
    Hacienda 289th
    Mission Valley 1777th
    Montview 1947th

This is out 2157 football leagues in the country.

To Me and Mikey who ever you are( some coward who can never post his real name)
I don’t know how going to the west co game and supporting an old friend or congratulating him on his success is living in the past you stupid hater. I have just as much right on this blog as you do my comment was about George Johnson,.not Mikey. Or are you to ignorant and uneducated to read. I have many more players up and coming that I may comment on in the future. I have every right to. I have followed them since the were young some of them 6 years old to now varsity level. If you think you or your stupid coward comments are going to stop my comments…you’ve got another thing comming!!! Get it through your head that I am still heavily involved in the development of youth football in sgv as well as my new youth so calif state championship tournament that I myself have created. I have vision that your ignorant self will never have. I see the future of sgv high school football. So believe me you idiot I am clearly no living in the past….I am clearly doing my part to be able to live in the present and in future years of the up and coming football stars. I currently partner with statcheckers to develop the opportunities for our up and coming youth. What do you do?…….besides leave nameless comments?.. sorry to everyone else for my rant!!! I’m just sick of these negative gutless bloggers who alwys comment with put downs and never comment with substance.

Thanks Fred I’m glad to hear that!

  • AMAT 73

    oneandnone,
You call that help .And this coming from a person who sets himself up for replies on the blog ala 76′s post. You know that 76 is you in disguise along with the village idiot’s posts. So what if in your book AMAT has not won anything of significance . What’s it to you . Why do you care and why would you bother to help anyone from AMAT . By the way what do you call beating every team we have faced from the fishbowl the last 4-5 years straight since you say we haven’t won anything in the fishbowl .Oh I forgot that is something we are suppose to do with our great recruiting advantages . The truth of the matter is you are just another idiot who cannot live without AMAT .Like I always say, love us or hate us but we are always on your mind. Isn’t that right onedumbazz. If you really want to help me just crawl back in your hole or under your favorite rock for the rest of the winter .

I think youre just some fat lazy guy sitting around a car dealership here in W/C reliving your so/so football career.
The fact you need to come on here and embellish your contributions to local sgv football is pathetic just like you!
You come on here criticizing my very intelligently written Blogs to feel better about yourself. Dont worry, a judge in Sacramento said you and Mikey can stay married.
So get of the computer and go back to work you old hack! Or better yet, stay the way you are; the world needs losers too.
    Go Bulldogs.
