Lutheran wins: After returning five starters that won the CIF-Southern Section Division 5AA and state Division 5 championship, the La Verne Lutheran boys basketball team searched for the best tournaments it could find, leaving after Christmas for the prestigious Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Trojans (2-0) opened the tournament on Tuesday in survive-and-advance fashion, edging Illinois' St. Rita 73-71 behind a huge effort from Loyola Marymount-bound senior Bruce English. The guard was nearly perfect, hitting nine of 10 shots for 24 points to go with a team-high 13 rebounds.
Junior forward/center Grant Jerrett, who has committed to Arizona, was steady too. Jerrett dominated the paint, finishing with 18 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks while UTEP signee C.J. Cooper chipped in with a much-needed 17 points.
St. Rita (4-4) got a team-high 21 points from Tim Gorski, but the Trojans shot 52 percent from the field and connected on 11 of 18 field goal attempts in the second half.
The Trojans advance to today's quarterfinals against Texas'
Prestonwood Christian Academy (10-9) Wednesday at 4 p.m., which boasts one of the
nation's top players.
Prestonwood Christian features 6-foot-8 sophomore Julius Randle, who ESPNU has named the No. 1 player prospect for the class of 2013.
Randle, who had 24 points and 10 rebounds in Prestonwood's 71-50 first-round victory over Canada's Father Henry, has all the heavyweights recruiting him, including Texas, Duke and Kentucky..
For those wishing to follow the Trojans, there will be a live stream of today's game at www.beachballclassic.com.
