Anthony Castro and Lauren Justus have been the Glendora High School cross country teams’ one-two punch the past few seasons. It was no different in 2010. Castro earned a second consecutive trip to the CIF State championships and finished 15th in Division 2, with Justus winning the Baseline League championship and advancing to the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 finals. Claremont’s Rob Lander is boys Coach of the Year, with Bonita’s Lonny Carr girls Coach of the Year.
The rest of the boys team features Claremont’s Paul Ross and Henry Falotico; Glendora’s Kelly Hernandez and Austin Mendoza; Rowland’s Nick Rivera and Northview’s Alan Callison. The girls first team features the Bonita trio of Marissa Scott, Lexie Jackson and Mikayla Flores; Ayala’s Taylor Khan and Jaclyn Gonzalez; and South Hills’ Alexandra Borunda.
“This year was really up and down,” said Castro, who repeated as boys Runner of the Year. “I showed up in the beginning, kind of went down for a bit (during the middle of the season) and came out of CIF finals with my best race.
“(The state championships) wasn’t what I wanted, but I got to be there. I’m really thankful for that.”
Castro’s best run of the season was 15:13 in the CIF-SS prelims at Mt. San Antonio College. He followed with a second-place time of 15:52 at the Division 2 finals, also at Mt.
SAC. He ended his season with a 14th-place finish and a time of 15:37 at the CIF State championships in Fresno.
Justus had the top time in the area of 17:53 at the Mt. SAC Invitational before winning the Baseline League title in 19:08. Her effort of 18:39 was sixth in Division 2 at the CIF-SS prelims before slumping to a 19:11 and 25th place at the CIF-SS finals. She also was sixth at the Woodbridge Invitational in 17:04.
“The end of my season wasn’t the way I wanted,” she said, “but the beginning was really good. That was my highlight.”
Lander earned boys Coach of the Year honors after leading Claremont to third-place finishes in Division 2 at the CIF- SS finals and CIF State championships in Fresno. His team included Ross and Falotico, who finished fourth and seventh, respectively, at CIF-SS finals. Ross and teammate Colin Domonoske also finished 10th and 11th, respectively, at the state meet.
Carr, with the help of Scott, Jackson and Flores, guided Bonita to a ninth-place finish in Division 3 at CIF-SS finals. Scott also finished 25th at the CIF State championships.
Here’s a brief look at the rest of the boys and girls first teams:
Paul Ross, Claremont: The senior anchored the Wolfpack’s run to third-place finishes at CIF-SS finals and CIF State championships. He had the best time among area runners of 15:03 at the Mt. SAC Invitational. He also led the Wolfpack at CIF-SS finals with a fourth-place finish in 15:53, and a 10th-place at the state meet with a time of 15:29.
Henry Falotico, Claremont: The senior was the second half of the Wolfpack’s one-two punch. He finished seventh at CIF-SS finals with a time of 16:01 and 21st at the state championships in 15:45.
Kelly Hernandez, Glendora: The senior, along with Castro, keyed the Tartans’ 11th-place finish at the Division 2 finals. He finished 22nd with a time of 16:18, then ran 15:35 at the
Mt. SAC Invitational.
Austin Mendoza, Glendora: The junior had one of the better times in the area, 15:52, at the Mt. SAC Invitational in October.
Alan Callison, Northview: The senior ran a personal-best 15:49 at CIF-SS prelims. He also finished ninth among area runners with a time of 15:53 at Mt. SAC. He finished 48th at CIF-SS finals in 15:53.
Nick Rivera, Rowland: The junior had the fourth-best time in the area (15:24) at Mt. SAC.
Marissa Scott, Bonita: The sophomore capped a banner season with a time of 18:50 to finish 25th at the state championships. She led the Bearcats with a time of 18:43 for a fifth- place finish in Division 3 at CIF-SS finals. She ran 18:08 at Mt. SAC.
Lexie Jackson, Bonita: The sophomore was the second part of the Bearcats’ three-headed monster. She had one of the area’s best times (18:53) before finishing 39th at CIF-SS finals in 19:55.
Mikayla Flores, Bonita: The freshman is Bonita’s next runner to watch and showed it with a time of 19:10 at Mt. SAC. She also was 46th at CIF-SS finals in 20:03.
Taylor Khan, Ayala: The junior helped the Bulldogs finish sixth in Division 2 at CIF-SS finals and the state championships. She was 16th at the state meet in 18:25 and 17th at CIF- SS finals in 18:58.
Jaclyn Gonzalez, Ayala: The junior was part of Ayala’s one- two punch with Khan. She finished 45th with a time of 19:41 at CIF-SS finals and was 25th at the state meet in 18:35.
Alexandra Borunda, South Hills: The junior had one of the top times in the area, 19:09, at Mt. SAC. She ran a 19:24 at CIF- SS prelims and missed the cut for the finals by just three seconds.
