Girls Soccer: Northview takes command of Valle Vista, beats San Dimas 3-2 in overtime

By Steve Ramirez
Northview High School has lived in the shadow of Valle Vista League girls soccer stalwart San Dimas the past few seasons. The Vikings took a step toward changing that on Thursday. Freshman Amanda Fuentes scored two goals, including the game-winner in sudden death overtime, and senior Khalalah Todd had a goal and two assists and Northview took early control of the league race with a 3-2 victory over the Saints in sudden-death overtime.Northview, also getting two assists from Kendahl Anderson, improved to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in league play. San Dimas, which scored two goals in the final four minutes of regulation to force the extra period, slipped to 8-2-1 and 3-1.
“This was a big test of character for us,” Northview coach Al Lorello said. “(San Dimas) scoring the last minute or so to tie it up and us to comeback and compose ourselves and put that goal in was pretty special.”
The winning play started with a throw in from senior Jade Vehawn. Anderson received the pass and went down the right side before feeding Todd, who drew goalie Rachel Jones away from the net.
Todd then passed to Fuentes, who tapped it in for the game winner.
The Vikings, getting a first-half goal from Fuentes and an eary-second half tally from Todd, looked to have the game comfortably put away. (to continue click thread)

But the Saints, who have won the league title the past three seasons, didn’t die easy.
Junior midfielder Audrey Vasquez started the charge with less than five minutes to play, feeding Jamie Quaternik, who put it past Northview’s Carol Garcia to cut the Vikings’ lead to 2-1.
The due then worked the magic a second time with about 30 seconds to play.
Quaternik gathered in a loose ball just outside the top of the penalty area. She was able to dribble inside and drew out Garcia. She then fed Vasquez for an easy tap in to tie it at 2.
“When we are down, we’ve gotten a lot better coming back than we used to,” San Dimas coach Kelly Kocalis said. “In the past, in my first couple of years here, we had trouble coming back.
“But now in the last couple of years, we have a track record of being able to come back. I think we really believe that we could do it.”
But Northview believed it as well, and Fuentes put an end to the impossible comeback 3:46 into the overtime period.
