Back to normal, and for those of you who watching the game tonight, Oregon is a lock
Comments are working again, perhaps better than ever and Aram is expected back from vacation on Tuesday and yes, the Tribune all-area football team will be out later this month, on Jan. 20 is the date given to us. The Oregon mascot will do plenty of push-ups tonight, still can't understand how the Ducks are 2 1/2 point underdogs to Auburn. With all their speed the Ducks are going to crush them, can easily imagine them winning by two touchdowns or more. In any case, the blog is up and running.
Steve's Take: This from the guy who gave me TCU and 14 points over Wisconsin. But seriously, this one will be close. As I wrote in my bowl season preview column: Both teams feature two of the best offenses in the country. On one side you have Darron Thomas and LaMichael James for Oregon matched against Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newston. But as great as these offenses are, this one will be decided by the defenses. And Oregon, led by linebacker Casey Matthews and Cliff Harris, has been more consistent than Auburn, led by tackle Nick Fairley. Expect a shootout, but color this one green by game's end.
And as a reminder of what it takes to win, here's some advice from the one they called the Bear:

You made some decent points there. I did a search on the subject and found most guys will go along with with your blog.
This really is such a superb resource that you simply are supplying and you give it away for free of charge.
To me the video clearly shows the Auburn runningback landing on his hand not his wrist. The difference between him and the Arkansas back was as Steve said, the hand of the Arkansas kid was faceing up which removes all doubt that he landed on his wrist/forearm area. Dyers hand was facing down and his knuckles from all his fingers were touching the ground, try touching your hand on your desk or the ground with your palm down and fingers or knuckles also making contact with the desk and I think you will find that your wrist is not touching, instead the bony part of your lower palm is what is supporting your weight. For your wrist to make contact you have to raise your fingers up off the desk, at least I did.
I wanted Oregon to win but I think the video clearly shows Dyer landed on his hand, at worst there was nothing conclusive to turn the call around.

Quit making excuses Duck fans. One play didnt change the outcome of this game.
Maybe if you could score on the one inch line, your crying wouldn't be going on now.
The best team WON
Steve, Oregon and Kelly move on because they must. These blogs and talk radio exist for reasons just like this. If everyone just "moved on" these wouldn't exist : )
Agree you play to the whistle, but a major concern for the players at that time is also a late hot penalty in case they didn't hear the whistle during the final minutes of a tied championship game in a packed stadium.
Again, if you pause video at 1:33-1:33 the hand is CLOSED and the wrist touches. It is not until Dyer has supported his weight that the hand opens and a regains balance. Take a look and tell me if you disagree with that point.
All 22 players stopped - that tells us something.
Just sayin: Difference is back of the hand to naked open hand, which is a significant difference. Open hand to the ground can be construed as a brace to keep your balance. There is no way the Arkansas player was trying to brace his fall to keep his balance. It can be argued that the Auburn player was, and game officials interpret the rule that way. The thing that is being missed is that the whistle never blew, which means live ball. Yet, the Oregon players froze and assumed Dyer was down. And you know what they say about assume.
But like I said, there are certain things in sports that go down as "life is tough" and you just move on. Chip Kelly and the Ducks have, and you should too.
Moral and NCAA for some reason don;t always go together
this one shoulda been easy. both these runners are down.

only problem is only the pic on the right was called as such
I know what the rule states. But from my view - and I looked at my recording of the game again - it's at best inconclusive. His wrist may have touched, but as the review states it has to be to a moral certainty to overturn a call on the field, which was ruled not down. If you disagree and believe the call was wrong, just file it under "life is tough" and move on. Chip Kelly has.
Hey Fred who do you have as a lock for this wknd NFL playoffs???....please post so i can bet the opposite! lol..
ARTICLE 3. A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle or declare it dead:
a. When it goes out of bounds other than a kick that scores after touching the uprights or crossbar, when a ball carrier is out of bounds, or when a ball carrier is so held that his forward progress is stopped. When in question, the ball is dead.
b. When any part of the ball carrier's body, except his hand or foot, touches the ground or when the ball carrier is tackled or otherwise falls and loses possession of the ball as he contacts the ground with any part of his body, except his hand or foot. ...
In my opinion the ruling on the field was wrong..You can clearly see his wrist touch the ground he should have been ruled down...Go back & watch the replay..article 3 says any part of the body, except hand & foot...Is the wrist concidered the hand???? I think not!! either way i dont believe Oregon would have stopped them anyways..but we will never know!..Check out Yahoo.com theres a still shot of the runner wis his wrist on the ground on the front page!
Steve - If you freeze the video at 1:3-1:35, I'm thinking that is no longer his open hand that is supporting him - but the wrist and even maybe the lower forearm. Down, IMO. Thought so then - think so now
Auburn jerseys are on their way. Gamers from the school . Another day in bandwagon commerce. Help economy. Oh yeah please like Ive always been Auburn fan, pth!
As a rule of thumb, i'll usually go to Vegas and throw down more than a few bones on a game like this one. But for some reason, I decided to pass it up this time around.....and i'm glad I did.
Freddie, a lock ? Man, I was thinking of taking your advice on this one big guy.....
Oh well...
Just sayin: It was ruled properly. The difference between this play and the Sugar Bowl was the play in the Sugar Bowl was the backside of the runner's wrist touched the field, which is down. Dyer's wrist never touches the ground. But his front hand does, which is not down. This happens on a lot of plays, where a runner is tripped, braces with his naked hand, maintains balance and keeps on going. This was the correct call because neither his leg or back of the hand ever touched. Oregon's players should have known to play until you hear the whistle. No whistle, play is still alive.
may have been closer to "a lock" if the officials had ruled on this properly.

Ok...who's job was it to get the word to Auburn that Oregon was a lock? I want names!
Oregon could not contain the run game & was getting completely dominated by the big uglys in the trenches..not to mention they didnt apply any pressure to the QB who had all day to throw..there was alot of contributing factors that led to the Ducks loss..Fred you didnt do your homework on this one by saying that Oregon was a lock!! lol...
Oregon is not a lock!!! This is a heavy weight battle..both teams have speed..both teams run a no huddle offense...If anything the advantage would have to go to Auburn they are after all the #1 team in the country!!..This mite be a barn burner & look for Oregon to win it down the stretch..Or look for Auburn to break it open in the second half..but to say that "this one is a lock" is simply foolish!~
