Boys Soccer: Damien couldn’t beat undefeated Claremont, settles for a 0-0 tie

By Clay Fowler Staff Writer
With a No. 1 ranking and a combined zero league losses in tow, the Damien and Claremont boys soccer teams were pleased entering Wednesday’s Sierra League showdown. After a scoreless tie that included overtime, everybody left with similar emotions. “We knew it wasn’t going to be pretty,” Damien coach Eric McElrea said. “We knew it was going to be a lot of bumps and bruises, but this is a good result for us, especially on the road.” Said Claremont coach Fred Bruce-Oliver: “I’m happy. The only way I could be happier is if we’d gotten one of those goals to go in.”

MONROVIA — This much is now clear: there’s rich talent on each side of the San Gabriel Valley.

That message was sent loud as the East withstood a frantic rally from the West to record a thrilling 25-22, 27-25, 23-25, 21-25, 16-14 victory in the inaugural San Gabriel Tribune vs. Pasadena Star-News Girls Volleyball Senior All-Star game at Monrovia High.

The East All-Stars, made up of senior standouts from the Tribune circulation area, were thought to be a more balanced team. But the West All-Stars, made up of players from the Star-News circulation area, proved every bit their worth.

No more than three points separated each team in the first two sets, eventually won by the East. There also were 13 ties in each set.

UTEP’s loss was Crutchfield’s gain: The Baldwin Park standout is headed to prestigious Georgetown; Jackson’s decision coming soon

By Fred J. Robledo, Staff Writer
Baldwin Park High School linebacker Wardell Crutchfield showed that in the end, grades were more important that football. Crutchfield had given a verbal commitment to the University of Texas El Paso on a full athletic scholarship back in August, but learned later that UTEP didn’t have enough scholarships available for him to enroll in the fall. UTEP wanted Crutchfield to grayshirt, meaning he would have to enroll in a community college in the fall and start at UTEP next January – which is a delayed form of red-shirting and a way that UTEP could still honor the scholarship it offered to Crutchfield.
UTEP’s decision forced Crutchfield to rethink his plans too, and on Wednesday he gave a verbal commitment to attend the University of Georgetown and its football team after weighing other scholarship offers from Eastern Michigan, Southern Utah and Villanova.

Charter Oak’s Gibas to Colorado State

Charter Oak offensive lineman Tanner Gibas is one of the top-rated long snappers in the country, and the specialty paid off. Gibas announced on Wednesday that he has accepted a full ride to attend Colorado State. Gibas chose Colorado State, though Kansas and California were interested too. “When you think of scholarships in football you think of the glory positions like quarterback or linebacker, but long snappers are a valued position too,” Gibas said. “I’m thankfull that I got offered. I loved my trip to Colorado State, especially the coaching staff and campus and when I got back home I made the decision to accept and go there.”
