Aram summing up the breaking news out of Wilson: The writing was obviously on the wall when retired former A.D. and football coach Dave Merrill was brought back to "oversee" the program.

By Aram Tolegian, Staff Writer
Wilson High School football coach Brian Zavala has resigned after two seasons at the school. Zavala resigned his position as football coach effective immediately and his teaching position at the school at the end of the year, according to Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District Assistant Superintendent Rob Roberts.

Zavala's decision comes only days after it was announced former football coach and athletic director Dave Merrill was returning to oversee the football program and be an adviser to Zavala. Merrill currently is retired but was an assistant coach at Damien last season. Roberts confirmed the district hired a private investigator to investigate Zavala and the football program, but would not elaborate on why.
Zavala went 4-16 in two seasons. The Wildcats got relief this past season from CIF by being removed from the Miramonte League and Southeast Division and being placed in the Valle Vista League and Mid-Valley Division.
Wilson was Zavala's first job as a head coach after spending time as an assistant at El Rancho, Rosemead and Northview.
