Boys Soccer playoffs: Mountain View earns fourth-seed; Glendora, Damien, Bonita, Pomona, Ganesha all league champs

By Fred J. Robledo, Staff Writer
After winning back-to-back CIF-Southern Section Division 6 title, the Mountain View High School boys soccer team will try to win its third straight title in the Division 5 playoffs, where it earned the fourth seed when the playoff pairings were announced on Monday. Mission Valley League champion Mountain View will open the playoffs on Friday against the winner from Wednesday’s wild-card game between host Garden Grove and Oaks Christian. The Vikings stumbled down the stretch with two ties and a 3-1 win over South El Monte to secure the lead title, but coach Javier Aguiniga is not concerned.
“I was a math major at UCLA and one of the things I noticed about our team is that every year we have this great stretch during the season and stumble a little just before the playoffs,” Aguiniga said. “I like to do graphs and there is a pattern there. But when the playoffs arrive, we sort of refocus and are ready. It’s a very tough division with undefeated (top seed) La Canada. But I like our team and I we’ll be ready.”
All wild cards and first-round games in boys soccer are Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
In other Division 5 wild-card games, Nogales will be on the road against Paloma Valley and Northview will be home against Carter.
The winner between Nogales and Paloma Valley will advance to the first round against Valle Vista League champion Pomona.
Mission Valley runner up South El Monte is home in the first round against Monrovia while Baldwin Park draws a home game against Maranatha.
El Monte, which finished third in the Mission Valley League, is at Tri-Valley League champion Carpinteria.
Glendora’s move from the Sierra to the Baseline League resulted in a league title and a first-round game in the tough Division 1 playoffs against Aliso Niguel, with the winner likely facing top-seed Edison in the second round.
After a long drought in recent years, Damien won the Sierra League title and will face Capistrano Valley in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.
Claremont, which finished second in the Sierra, is home against Indio while third-place Sierra finisher Chino Hills has a road game against Empire League champ Kennedy.
The Division 4 playoffs have several area teams.
In Wednesday’s wild card, Workman is home against Beverly Hills while Diamond Bar heads to La Salle and Sierra Vista plays at Serrano.
In first-round action, Hacienda League champ Bonita will face the wild-card winner between Glendale and Culver City while Montview League champ Ganesha plays host to Saddleback, a second-place team from the Orange Coast League.
La Puente has a tough first-round game at Burbank Burroughs, with the winner likely facing top-seed Santa Monica. Los Altos is on the road against Oak Hills in the first-round.
La Serna, which finished second in the Del Rio, is on the road against Diamond Ranch, a second-place finisher in the Hacienda.
