Girls Hoops Playoffs: Bishop Amat, Bonita and Duarte cruise; St. Lucy’s goes down

Over/Under 8 first-round prediction: I guess I owe the Inland Insider Tom Kiss an In N Out lunch. I bet that less than eight teams would advance past the first round with 23 games on the schedule. Ten teams advanced, so the over’s win.

La Canada High School’s girls basketball team finished fourth in the Rio Hondo League and was under .500 during the regular season.
St. Lucy’s Priory’s, meanwhile, enjoyed one of its better seasons in recent years, finished a strong second in the Sierra.
But the CIF-Southern Section playoffs often offer up surprises and Thursday’s opener was no exception. (To continue click thread)

Cailan Howey scored 14 points and had 17 rebounds and Kristene Hossepian had 12 points and the visiting Spartans scored a 52-40 upset in a Division 4AA game.
La Canada, also getting seven steals from Howey, improved to 8-19 and will travel to No. 2 seed Bishop Montgomery in Saturday’s second round.
St. Lucy’s, getting 13 points from Nicole Zugasti and 10 from Savannah Selby, finished 15-11.
La Canada coach Tamar Hill: “It’s nice. Really nice. We knew St. Lucy’s was good. We’ve had history with their program before. They play tough. But I think our defense shocked them at the beginning of the game.”
St. Lucy’s coach Mondo Lanier: “I expected (this could happen). I told the girls this was a winnable game, but it also was a game we could lose easily. I think we just had a horrible first half. Second half we played much better.”
