Wrestling: Area’s elite 8 punch tickets to Bakersfield by advancing to Masters semifinals; 17 others still alive for state bids

Friday, as far as area wrestlers were concerned, was a luke-warm day at the CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet.
Eight competitors, including those from the East and West San Gabriel Valley and the Whittier area, advanced to the semifinals of their respective weight classes, and have clinched spots for next weekend’s CIF State Championships in Bakersfield. There are another 17 area wrestlers who are still alive to earn their state-meet bid. All must win fourth-round consolation matches Saturday morning to advance to next week. If they lose, they would drop into the ninth-place semifinals and would need to win two matches to advance.

For a good part of Thursday afternoon’s CIF-Southern Section Division 3 girls soccer semifinal, visiting Serrano was much more physical than second-seed Bishop Amat, so much that the frustration started wear on the Lancers’ faces. The Diamondbacks sported a pair of imposing forwards in Kellsie Gleason and Katie Pound, but the Lancers stood their ground for the most part, getting a solid effort from goalkeeper Alexis Carillo, who came in an out of the penalty area to continually knock away crosses and keep the game scoreless long enough for the Lancers to get going. You can run, but you can’t hide … We might get a Lutheran, Damien showdown in state playoffs

For all of our (my) complaining that you have three of the best teams in La Verne history not scheduling each other during the season and wasting all the money and excitement that comes with it, thank goodness for the playoffs. The Bonita-Damien game on Tuesday is why those two should play every year. It’s hard enough drumming up excitement for the boys basketball season, we don’t need top teams making it any harder by not scheduling each other. The Damien-Bonita game was by far the most packed and gut-wrenching game of the season. And we might not be done, with Lutheran and Damien still in the hunt (not guaranteed yet) for a Division III state playoff berth by reaching the divisional semifinals, wouldn’t that be something if their paths crossed in the state playoffs. … They can all hide all they want from each other during the season, but you can’t hide now …

Remember how you voted before the playoffs began … I picked Amat girls hoops .. but St. Lucy’s water polo looks like the real deal

If you were voting now, St. Lucy’s girls water polo sure looks good, so does Bonita girls water polo, which wasn’t on the list. But the favorites that most selected are still in play, Damien boys basketball, Bishop Amat girls soccer, Bonita girls basketball. Curiously, not many picked Lutheran, maybe it’s that smaller school Price they’re worried about. P.S. – For Saturday’s Amat-Bonita game, I vote they play down the street at Edgewood, my alma mater. Covina or Northview are very good new gyms too. I here that Arroyo is probably out, let’s just hope they keep it close, it’s going to pour on Saturday night…
