Will post all-league teams next week: Hacienda girls have a couple shockers, where’s the justice for Lauren Stupin and Nikki Wheatley?

I won’t release the all-league teams until next week, but I have most of them with a couple of shocking decisions that stand out, both from the Hacienda League. How Cal State Fullerton bound midfielder Lauren Stupin wasn’t the player of the year in girls soccer is outrageous, she was far and away the best player on the best team in the Hacienda. That almost always results in an MVP, so not sure how they screwed that up. I guess politics as usual. Speaking of politics, I almost fell out of my seat looking at the Hacienda selections in girls basketball. I have to tell you, Bonita freshman guard Nikki Wheatley is getting strong player of the year consideration from us, but she’s not even on the first team in the Hacienda. Are you kidding me? I know she’s a freshman, but don’t penalize her for it, she’s obviously one of the best five players in the Valley, so for her not to be on a Hacienda first-team list (that includes seven players) is pure robbing the freshman of her just due.

    Boy you said it Fred…POLITICS!

I’m not a high school coach, and never have been. I’m not sure how the voting works exactly, but for these two girls to NOT get their just rewards is a travesty…especially for Stupin, a Senior!

What the hell are these coaches thinking? My guess is it was a “screw them…I want to help my girls” type situation. When voting is involved and, as I understand it, ranking of players, all I have to do is rank the best players the lowest and it will bump my girls up above them. My guess is this is what happened in this situation. So sad that adults always have to screw it up for kids.

  • FredJ

I’m still shocked at both decisions, Stupin and Wheatley were no-brainers. Los Altos won the Hacienda with the best player on the field, how could you not give it to her. It makes absolutely no sense. With Wheatley, it’s even more outrageous, are you telling me she’s not deserving of first-team all Hacienda when she’s arguably a player of the year candidate in the San Gabriel Valley? Didn’t Bonita go undefeated in the Hacienda and beat DRanch twice? Did anyone see what she did to Bishop Amat in the semifinals? I’m speechless, what are coaches thinking?

  • hacienda

Calm down Fred. do some homework first. as far as Wheatly, you have to remember that this is a regular season all league team, not a CIF playoff team. Wheatly tore it up in CIF and really took her game to the next level, but as far as the regular season, you can legitimately argue that Anderson and Zylstra from Bonita were just as deserving and they probably were not going to allow 3 Bonita players on the all league. That just wasn’t going to happen. Wheatly was the 5th leading scorer (11.0) in LEAGUE PLAY behind Zylstra (14.8) and Anderson (12.7). Zylstra and Anderson play different positions and are seniors (shouldnt matter). Barnes and Williams have to make the team also WHeatly is certainly in the discussion, but not a slam dunk as you make it out to be. She will, however, be on the team for the next 3 years and win a couple MVPs and all CIF honors as well. She has a bright future.

  • Laurens Dad

From what I have heard Lauren was torpedoed by the West Covina coach who, instead of ranking Lauren in the top 3-4 players of the MVP pool, ranked her in the bottom 4-5. His justification was that she only scored 2-4 goals against his squad while many other players scored 5 or 6!
In the three games LA played against West Cov. Lauren scored 9 goals to go along w/ 5 assists, not sure how much more she could have done. Also, by the second half of the 2nd league game, Coach Reeder instructed his 1st string to stop shooting and feed the ball to some of the other players. Considering how poor the WC team was, it is disheartening to realize how a coach of such little knowledge of the game could have such a big impact on the lives of the deserving players.

    Disappointed Dad

  • Fred Robledo

Why wouldn’t you put three players on the first team when its obvious she belongs? I remember one year when four of five first-team All-SGV players were from Amat? Why, because they won a state title and it was obvious they were four of the best players in the area. I think it’s obvious Wheatley is among the top eight in the Hacienda? There is nobody on West Covina or Walnut better than her, yet those two teams had two players each on first team. Wheatley’s best value to the team isn’t as a scorer anyway, she led the league in steals, and directed the show on the best team in the Valley and Hacienda. The most important position in girls basketball is the point guard, not just offensively, but defensively in slowing down other great guards. She’s the one who defends other point guards with her quickness, if you don’t have that type of player, you don’t win CIF playoff games. I agree that Anderson and Zylstra were no brainers also, but in my opinion, Anderson and Wheatley were the two most important players to Bonita’s success because of what they do on both ends of the floor and in transition. The fact you say the league probably wouldn’t allow three players on first team is what I’m talking about, it’s bad politics.

  • Fred Robledo

Lauren’s Dad, I heard the exact same story, what a shame.

  • hacienda

my apologies. did not know there were 8 players on that team. You are right, she is one of top 8 players. Thought there was only 5.

  • Fred Robledo

Hacienda, yeah, there is the player of the year plus seven first team slots .. that was my complaint with Hacienda voting…Even if there were only five players, given that Bonita and Diamond Ranch were head and shoulders above the rest, if you had to pick only five, there should be three from Bonita and two from Diamond Ranch… I don’t even have to mention their names, it’s pretty easy to figure out who the five best are.

  • Check out the stats

Laurens Dad, I hate to say this but, I disagree with your statement that, the West Covina coach who, instead of ranking Lauren in the top 3-4 players of the MVP pool, ranked her in the bottom 4-5. His justification was that she only scored 2-4 goals against his squad while many other players scored 5 or 6! sounds like the coach made the right choice.
West Covina sports always play it straight! We call it as we see it. We always win with class and humility! We dont blame others for our failures like you do! I know its tough luck that Bonitas girls basketball was your realistic last chance at a ring, but thats something you have to deal with. Maybe you werent committed enough or didnt work hard enough. You are welcome to Kiss the Ring!

I believe this would be my second ever comment on a site i have enjoyed reading and receiving great updates and status on all areas sports. As for the voting, i doubt this will effect or make a difference in Nikki’s career present or future since she never played for the recognition or rewards. However, she has had many in such a short career. In naming a few, MVP Michael Jordan Camp( Boys Division), ALL Star first team, Adidas Phenom Camp Girls ect.. Nikki plays for the love of the game and competition. She was blessed to have the opportunity to play at Bonita that has the Best Boys Coach in San Gabriel Valley and the anticipated Coach of the Year, Girls Division who i have all the respect and blessed to have three more years with my daughter. i appreciate all the comments and respect greatly the opinion of Fred and the other readers. Nikki is easy. Her play speaks for its self. it would be nice to end on a positive note. i know Nikki and her teammates have enjoyed a journey that will last a lifetime and the girls have bonded in a way that is priceless. This is why i do what i do. I like to recognize the Diamond Ranch duo, Erica and Chelsie for their support at the Serra game. Very classy. I would further like to acknowledge Coach Mike James for the class he displayed at a time when many expected the opposite. I have not yet spoken to my daughter about the ” decision” but i anticipate she would ask about Taylor or Madison and Cheslie and Erica and would not be affected one way or the other as to her. This is who she is and i hope who she continues to be. Fred! Thanks for your reporting on Girls basketball throughout the season.

  • Aaron

Are you serious Fred? You think that…you just killed yourself.

Madison, Taylor, and Nikki together are why Bonita did so well this year. With them and 10 role players…I’m serious about that, although Brianna Kennedy in the post is a GREAT player.

Remember Fred, Madison Zylstra is the leading scorer in Bonita Girls history…without her the last four years where would the girls be?

However you could have helped your argument greatly if you showed the All Hacienda League football picks where the entire O-line came from West Covina.

And Nikki Wheatley getting gipped as a Frosh is bogus because she was by far the best PG in the league.

  • AMAT 73

    bulltrash1,
Get it sraight fool Lauren’s Dad is speaking of his daughter who plays soccer for Los Altos not Bonita. Man or should I say boy , you really have a bad case of Bonita on the brain. You have it so bad you can’t decipher who plays for who . Are you sure your not related to sgvsworstidiot . Him with AMAT and you with Bonita are two peabrains in a pod. You do have one thing wrong on not blaming others for your failures, you only blame all the members of your own team as you did on another thread and that sure did show a lot of that class and humility you write about.

  • Bulldog1

Amattrash setenta y tres, I guess its hard for a dull blade like yourself to understand, so Ill keep it simple for you, there is a certain crybaby mentality associated with certain schools in the area, primarily South Hills, Glendora, Los Altos, Bonita, and of course Amat! None of which has won anything this year in CIF. If you read my comment properly you would notice that I never referred to Lauren playing for Bonita my peabrain friend!
Just to let all you Amat folk know, we always win with class and humility.
Fred, could you please post the CIF per school awards for this season please?
Please feel free to stop by and watch the Bulldogs play baseball. But, Amattrash setenta y tres, you may not kiss the ring!
    Bulldog Fever.

  • I suggest a moratorium that Bulldog1 be banned or at least ignored!

Bulldog1 is such an annoying tool that I think we should all ignore him and his taunts, kiss the ring, win with class and humility BS! Don’t comment or even mention him from this point forward!

  • JFR

    DOUCHEpup1,

I see you are still trying to tear down young ladies from Bonita that obviously have more talent than you ever had. I’m starting to figure you out though, getting turned down to the dances by a gal who was an inch or two taller has buried a hatred in you that has finally erupted now that you have teenage kids and you see these young ladies. I also understand that your kids didn’t play a down for the football team but you are claiming fame to their success. My favorite is how you argue that WC should be ranked ahead of DB for the #10 spot in the valley. Go back under the bridge you little troll and rub your PRECIOUS.

  • Colt

Hey bulldog, do you remember this. BACK to BACK to BACK to BACK.

  • Fred Robledo

Bulldog 1, you’re just annoying for the sake of being annoying. I laughed for a while and like the kiss the ring thing you got going, but bring something better, if all you’re going to do is call teams out with mean-spirited comments, I can’t let you keep posting. Not saying you can’t speak your mind or comment on others, but take it easy will ya .. that asking too much? C’mon, a little humility once in a while. If you’re gonna rep West Covina, do them right.

  • Steve Ramirez

I have to agree with Fred on this one. Basically, the Bonita story this year is an added variable. Last year, with Madison Zylstra and Taylor Anderson, the Bearcats went 25-5, finished second in their league and advanced two rounds in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. This year, with those two players back, and the addition of Nikki Wheatley, they went 30-4, went undefeated in their league and advanced to the CIF State SoCal Regional quarterfinals. Yes, returning players get better, but it’s obvious Wheatley was the difference maker. Just a thought.

Fred and the boys probably saw more hoops than I did this season, but I picked it up in the postseason.

Nikki Wheatley is the best player I saw.

I played w/ a guy who was voted 2nd team all league corner. He ended up being 1st team all CIF and 1st team All SGV. Pretty sure Nikki was more intrested in winning titles. She got 1 league title, hope she gets a CIF in the next 3 years. She will end up being one of the most decorated athletes in the valley’s history.

Carroll. I would like to caution you on coming on to this blog. There are unhappy people who come on here and find fault with Mother Teresa. I enjoyed your post but be careful, in time someone will make a personal, hateful attack on you or your daughter and it will ruin your day. I

  • Bulldog1

Carroll Wheatley, The Bonita girls had a nice run this year. They seam to play well as a team. Your daughter has a very bright future in what ever she does in life, the fact she competes at such a high level as a classy young lady is incredible and you should be very proud as Im sure you are! As a parent its nice to look forward to our childs future, and I am positive Nikki has a bright one.

  • AMAT 73

    bulldumb1,
Did you forget our CIF title in girls soccer. Now who’s the dull one. I would never lower myself to kiss some ring that a hot wind bag thinks he had so much to do with winning . What is it with you and this ring deal anyway . What did you do to help the team win it ? And what about you calling out the whole WC baseball team if you have so much love for WC.

  • Don

I enjoyed reading the comments of Carroll Wheatley, clearly one of those parents who get it. Not surprisingly, he is also, by most accounts, quite a good basketball coach too.

Mr. Wheatley recognizes that what really matters is that his kid continues to improve, to try and play to the very best of her ability. When she does that, as she has so far, personal and team success, as well as personal recognition for her contributions, will follow. In this atmosphere of youth sports we live in, where parents restlessly move kids from league to league, travel team to team and school to school looking for the perfect combination of high visibility on a successful team, Mr. Wheatley’s example is beyond refreshing. It provides a little hope.

After a week of reading posts from the little man on lark ellen and the thread from softball parents bickering over who should be honorary captain of the team it was a pleasure to see the parent of a prominent local athlete stand up for so much that is right about prep sports. Good on you Mr. Wheatley.

  • Another Fan

It is ALWAYS about politics and disappointed and defeated Coaches trying to get their senior girls on the First Team. It’s all GOOD, I’ve known Nikki Wheatley since she was a wee little baller and she is a great baskeball player and a CLASSY girl. She plays harder than anyone else because she lvoes the game. I KNOW that she will have a bright future. Let the other girls have their first team honors – some deserving, some not – doesn’t matter because we will see Nikki play over the next 3 years, in college and probably in the WNBA. She will look back and not even remember she did not make First Team her Freshman Year. Ball on, Nikki, Ball on!!!!

  • COACHES?

Politics always plays some kind of role in sports! This one is truly a “Sick” one given this girls performance.

What else does an athlete on a court have to do? She played her “heart” out all year long and lead her team like a champion. Sure, a team is made up of a group of players, but to not give this girl her due is just BS…

The coaches that vote for this crap should be down right ashamed of themselves.

Age doesn’t play a role in success and we could list NUMEROUS players in sports that have proven that.

Don’t know this young lady but he’s a FIRST TEAMER in my book!

  • Nikki Fan

1st team/2nd team nominations have always been political in every sport. Every coach wants their kid represented regardless of overall performance and team results. It is disheartening. I have seen players not even get a 2nd team nod (although they were a full ride scholarship; were on the first place team and dominated against all the teams).

Zylstra and Anderson were beyond deserving of the recognition. However, for the blogger who talks about looking at the overall points (an excuse of why Wheatley might now have been considered) doesn’t know sports. How many times did Wheatley spoon feed it to her players? Time and time again. This is basketball at its finest. Congratulations Bonita Girls Basketball. You made your school and the Valley proud. Nikki, know one has to say anything to you. You got everything you need (family/friends/school). Keep being the shining star that you are!

I have had the pleasure of watching Nikki play on boys/girls teams and it doesn’t matter who she is with. She is a team player and makes any team shine. The Wheatleys are a class act and will continue to be.

Fred-Thank you for making the arguement you did. This is a great kid and everyone knows it.

First of all I don’t like Bonita. But dayum, right is right. Wheatly is what Bonita has been missing. Without her DRanch beats them both times, and it may have gotten ugly. I saw all of the Hacienda League teams. Here is how I would rank the players based on what I saw.

    1. Barnes- The best player in the SGV hands down. 20+ppg against better competition. Avg a Double-Double in the play-offs. Also the best defender in the SGV.

    2. Anderson-Can play any position. Having Wheatly allowed her to move off the point and show her full game.

3a. Williams-The most versitile of the top 5 players. Ran the point quite a bit in the play-offs.

3b. Wheatly-Her positon is PG but it needs to be changed to basketball player. I was impressed with her fearless rebounding.

    4. McDill- Her team really struggled down the stretch. She remained consistant.

4b. Zylstra-She never had a good game in her 4 years against DR. She roasted the rest of the league with her sharp shooting.

    Mr. Wheatly,

You hit it right on the head. Your daughter seems to be very comfortable with who she is. She was able to fit in with a team of seniors that have been together for 4 years. That’s not easy, especially with girls. I think being humble and working hard will carry her much further and All-League First Team. I look at the body of work. That speaks louder that words ever could. I know Coach James and his staff like Nikki a lot. I’m sure that you don’t like all the trash talking that goes on on these blogs. Some people on here can be real haters and try to suck people in to all their ignorance.

Scroll down further on the thread and you will see what my post pertains to ( March 15 2011 2:26 pm to be exact) . Yes he did say one nice thing ( which I was not slamming him on ) after numerous posts slamming other school supporters as crybabies. Kind of trying to clean up his mess. What do think about him slamming your whole baseball team on another thread and praising only his son as being the only factor for Keppel being WC’s only win ?

That was a really nice thing to say about Nikki and Lauren, and your poem was nice too.

Good luck to the ladycats softball team.

  • Frankie C

There have been many points made whether Nikki deserves to be or not be a 1st team selection and they all have their merits and points of view. This is the All Hacienda League 1st team and only the League game should be taken into account. Unfortunately I did not get to see all of the away League games but I did not see 3 others Players other that those from Bonita or Diamond Ranch that should have been on the 7 member 1st team ahead of Nikki. The Lady Bearcats were 1st and foremost a TEAM. Jaclyn, Madison and Taylor started together and then added Brianna and they made it to the CIF Semi-Finals in 2010. They added Nikki this year and made it to the Elite Eight in State (Semi Finals of So Cal). All of the Lady Bearcats did their part for the team to succeed, be it Scoring, Rebounding, Setting Picks, Stealing the Ball at Both the ends of the Court. Different Schools tried to take away a different player or players each game and it was up to the others that game to pick up the Slack and they did. They are better together as a unit than apart, and what school would not want to add a player that starting unit to their rooster? Remember someone has to be on the other end catching the passes to have a successful Play. Nikki as the other Lady Bearcats no doubt understands the concept and that is why they were so successful. There is no doubt that Nikki as well as the other Lady Bearcats will and should be considered for all Valley as well as All CIF Honors.
In the CIF Play-offs if you were there Nikki took it to the next level, stepping up when they took away some of her teammates and passing off when they tried to stop her, and her teammates were able to finish off the play. Stronger together than apart! TEAM! When have you ever seen the point guard get as many rebounds as you see Nikki had in those games? As far as the Amat, Peninsula, Bell-Jeff games, well you should have been there. Nikki has 3 years left and 1 more with Brianna and we will see which players step up an earn next years starting spots. I can hardly wait for next year season to get here! She help her teammates set the set for future teams to aspire too! Remember, Nikki is FRESHMAN and only has the future to look forward to!
Mrs. Wheatley demonstrated Class in here remarks as well as Courage by not hiding behind an Alias. I have personally sat next to both Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley and have found them to be a class act as well as the others Lady Bearcat Parents. You can see why Nikki carries herself well beyond the years of an ordinary freshman. Congratulation to all of the Lady Bearcats for a Memorable and Amazing season as well as all of the Coaches and Staff for all of their hard work! I am sure all of the Lady Bearcats will look back in the future and have fond memories of this season and the lifelong friends they made with their teammates.

    Frankie

Have to disagree with you on this. Doesn’t matter if she a freshman or not. Did see all the games, and this young lady deserves it. Now, it’s not going to determine her fate, because any normal recruiter knows the lay of the land.

But someone show me some facts, stats, or some better leader that doesn’t warrant the gold. Just to say, she has more years ahead of her, doesn’t cut it.

Hard work should be rewarded accordingly and her play has been down right stellar this year. Period!

    Enough Said..

    Madison Z,
I really hope you are Madison and not bullfrog in diguise. I wrote it was a nice poem except for the error on Lauren’s name. If you look at this guy’s post 99% of them are knocking the SGV schools as losers and crybabies. He is on a ruthless attack on Bonita ever since Fred hurt his feelings by writing that Bonita was the top sports program and not WC this year in the SGV. Go to some of the threads and read his posts and maybe you will understand why many bloggers put him on blast.

  • daily ref

no way its madison z, she is way to smart and classy to get involved in this stuff.

  • Frankie C

Well Go Bearcat it’s OKAY to disagree! I wrote The fact that she is ONLY A FRESHMAN to acknowledge just how bright (Up Side) a future that I believe Nikki has. Not a reason to keep Nikki off of the 1st Team All League. Weather she is selected or not to the 1st Team I expect to see Nikkis Name on the All Valley and CIF Teams. I believe that you can find Stats on the Max Preps web site that only has he League game if that helps out. But Stats do not always account for all of the impact that a player has in a game. Taylor changed her game this year and became a more Scoring, Rebounding, Passing, Pick Setting, Defensive all around Player that my friends who I convince to come the few games were very impressed with. They were also amazed how fearless that Nikki was in the Paint. So Go Bearcat I do indeed agree with you that Freshmen or Senior, your play on the Court should speak for itself. I also wrote that I believe that I did not see 3 other Players in the league that should have kept Nikki from a spot on the 1st Team All League.
Her Father mentioned how Nikki wants to improve each year and add to her game. She is aware that the journey is indeed a process. A trait that the Great Ones possess! I agreed with Mrs. Wheatley in that Nikki understands the concept of TEAM PLAY! Kobe needs Pau and Fish. Michael needed Scotty and others. No one Player can do it all. One player to Past the Ball, One player to catch the Ball, Shooting, Rebounding, Defending, TEAM Work! The NCAA is going on at this time and a team can upset a team of a few stars. Wow that just happen, just asks Louisville. Diana Tarausi did not have the players around her and we all know about her Amazing Story!
Again Best of Luck to all of the Lady Bearcat Seniors for the Future, as well as the returning player as the rest up and begin the process anew! Looking forward to next year, but all season in their own time!

Politics as usual in all league voting! Living in DB and watching several of their games. I was impressed by their outside defender #28. Come to find out she got no acknowledgement from the league or coaching staff. Damn shame…she’s the only one moving on to play in the ncaa. Good Luck kid!

  • DR Fan

Hear is my last comment on this matter. According to what I was told, here is the way All-League voting works. The players are nominated by their coach. Then the other coaches rank the players according to a point system. The points are added up. The 7 players with the most points are your First Teamers. I would think that most of the coaches did the right thing, but it only takes 1 maybe 2 to screw it up.
