Baseball: Glendora, Diamond Bar open with league wins; Bonita smudges San Dimas, 3-1; Sierra League opens today

By next week we should have our full staff back, but there are a couple baseball games that we must cover. Thursday’s Sierra League opener with Damien going to South Hills and Friday’s Valle Vista League opener with Northview heading to Nogales are two great games to start the league season. It will be South Hills and Nogales’ first introduction to their new leagues, and both have a great chance of competing for titles. Other good games to note, Glendora opens the Baseline with a 7-1 thumping of Upland and Diamond Bar appears headed back on the right track with a 5-1 win over West Covina to open the Hacienda. Kenny Mathews pitched six solid innings for Diamond Bar, allowing just two hits. Henry Omana closed the 7th, and had a home run. Baseball’s version of the smudge went to Bonita, who beat San Dimas 3-1 under the lights Wednesday. Bishop Amat opens the Del Rey on Friday at home against rival St. Paul. The rest of the week’s schedule is below. Please updates games where you’re at, and I will update results as soon as I can.

    Fred,

You wrote: Bonita will host San Dimas under the lights tonight at 6:30 p.m., but it’s the other way around, (your game schedule has it right). The BoHi game is at San Dimas High School, tonight at 6:30 pm.

  • Amat Alumni and Parent

I believe the Amat game vs. St. Paul is at St. Paul.

  • SaintsR4real

    Where’s KH??!!

Just not the same without his cRaZy TALK!

  • Blue Blood

I got Amat at home Friday 3:15pm vs. the st. paul SLIME!!!!

  • FredJ

Amat just emailed to confirm game is at Amat on Friday.

  • Amat baseball

Get it right Fred, St. Paul isn’t our rival anymore- we aren’t concerned about them

  • Joe Amat

    Amat baseball

You may not have been around for very long – but St Paul will ALWAYS be a rival. That doesn’t mean we’re “worried” or that they have the upper hand in any way. But they are the next best baseball program in the Del Rey and they will always be “The Slime”.

That’s enough to always want to beat the St Paul Spies (ask around-you’ll find out why)

  • SaintsR4real

    SWEEEEEEEP :(

    GONGRATS BONITA!!

  • Know the Game

St Paul was the next best program in the Del Rey League…La Salle will take over this year!

  • Aaron

Whoever the big guy on the mound was…he was big, and when he stood next to Mark Lindsay I was like..he’s big. He hit four guys…after two I’d have pulled him but that’s me. Coach Regan needed to get him a little more under control and settle him down. However I understood having him pitch longer to preserve SDs other guys since this was not a league game.

Not being bitter so don’t come after me, I’m just saying. Nice to see Justin Garza cap a complete game and get out of a few rough spots more than a few times.

KC Huth did great today for all those wondering. Great arm from right field which got the Bearcats out of a jam a few times.

    Good game.

  • FYI

BASEBALL – Bonita Beats San Dimas 3-1
Justin Garza’s stellar pitching performance was backed up by the clutch hitting and defense of KC HUTH as Bearcats top Saints before packed house at San Dimas. Garza’s fastball overpowered Saint’s hitters all night even in the 7th. HUTH’s 2 run single later in the game was the margin of victory. HUTH also displayed Div. I quality right arm throwing out an advancing Saints runner at 3B by 10 feet. Props to Matt Gelalich for starting things off for Bonita earlier. Bearcats get pitching, they are gonna be hard to beat.

  • Yeah Baby

    Aaron

You’re being to kind. Reagan is a bag of —-. They have played NOBODY until tonight. Who was coaching 3rd base?

Garza lights out again! KC played a great game and glad to see his early success this year.

Kh, read but remember silence is golden, don’t jinx it!

  • Leyva Who?

    Hey Leyva:

How many first pitched strikes did you take right down the middle of the plate? Get a clue and learn how to coach the game. Obvisouly the hitting philosophy shows in the stats.

  • Bearcat Fan

Very good game played by both Bonita and Saints last night. Fun game to watch.
Saints have a good club and should be just fine.
Solid pitching performance by Garza along with Saints pitcher.
Bonita only had 4 hits by Huth, Lindsay, Mier, Gelalich but the HBP’s were the difference in this game.
Best of luck to both teams – they should represent the Valley well.

  • JFR

    Fred,

I was very much looking forward to opening my paper with cup of joe in hand “as I do everyday” to read the results from yesterdays league opening games and what do I get, squat. Is this due to mandatory vacation days for you people over there because the last couple of weeks you guys have been horrible with getting scores out. I’m not blaming you but you are the editor as I am an owner so we get to take the heat. I have always been loyal to this paper as a deliverer and subscriber and don’t seem to be getting my pennies worth, hell bump it up a couple bucks a month to hire on more I’ll pay. I’ve invited you to hit some but now I think it’s your turn.

  • Fred Robledo

JFR, Steve is off again this week, and I’m helping with Whittier reporters who are off .. By the middle of next week, everyone is back for the rest of the year (hopefully). We got baseball covered the next two days. Yesterday, I covered softball since so many area teams were in one place…Thank goodness so many are calling in boxscores, the results of Diamond Bar and Bonita were in the paper today….

  • AMAT 73

    AMAT Baseball,
I second that Joe . St Paul slime will always be our rival . It’s in the blood of every Lancer to want to take it to the slime.

  • JFR

    Fred,

I see you were correct in picking DB 2-4 at the #10 spot over 1-5 WC in your weekly poll. Sorry but I just couldn’t resist that one, karma is a bear.

  • Colt

good one JFR. Hey bullpuppy, BACK to BACK to BACK to BACK. I know you still have nightmares.

  • Judy

Fred — can parents send in the scores or does it have to be a representative of the team? What number gets called or can we email?

  • Dan

    Joe Amat,
Memories from the 70′s, the ole St.Paul spy scandal. In our freshman year, it was the first round of the 4A playoffs. I remember that somebody spotted the St. Paul staff midweek in the Denny’s parking lot across the street from our varsity practice field spying on our varsty practice.
It came out in the Whittier Daily news the week after, I believe they were caught filming from a van but it was such a long time ago that I’m not a 100% on that. Pioneer went on to the second round despite their loss to St. Paul, but didn’t go any further as they ran into a very good Newport Harbor team, South Hills eventually won the division Championship, beating St. John Bosco
at the L.A.Coliseum to start a nice run of Sierra league teams winning the division the next three out of 4 years.

  • FredJ

Judy, usually a coach calls in the results or assigns a person to do so. You can email in boxscores to scores@sgvn.com or call us at 626-962-8811, ext. 2233 or 2242 …results need to be in by 8 p.m., for the following day….

  • JFR

    Dan,

Are you talking about the infamous fog bowl, Nemzek told us that he couldn’t see most of the game from the sidelines.

  • Lancer daze

Any Bishop Amat Lancer worth his salt KNOWS that st paul is,and always will be,”the SLIME”!!!
st paul is known as Bishop Amat’s eternal rival because they are the eternal SLIME!! For this reason, and this reason alone, they will always be known (as AMAT’s rival); otherwise, they cease to be relevant.

  • AMAT 73

    JFR,
I remember when Nemzek was our 8th grade P.E. teacher and coach of the 8th grade football team at my junior high school.

  • Joe Amat

    Dan,

Absolutely correct. Forgot you were a Pioneer guy. JFR, that was the “Fog Bowl” at the Coliseum. I know I couldn’t see much from the stands for sure. Bethke and the QB from Bosco share POY honors but Bosco had a great RB named Ford who I thought made them go. That was a great era for the SGV with South Hills, Los Altos, Amat and West Covona really being among the elite at the highest level.

  • JFR

Good old “Happy Jack” Nemzek use to break out the old projector and would watch those games because we ran the same damn offense eleven years later.

Joe, Mark Vargas who’s son is at SH and also blocked for Bethke is doing some construction on one of Brian’s properties out here. I think he stayed back in the mid west after playing for KU. Those were some great teams back then, I remember going to a LA vs WC game in the seventies and LA made this incredible goal line stand to end the game.

  • From The Stands

The past couple years were great seeing a certain St. Paul girl cheering for her Amat pitcher even at the CIF championship game.

  • colt

BACk to BACK to BACK to BACK….remember that hot June night at Hollenbeck. hahahaha

  • JFR

    Colt,

Didn’t you guys beat them in football and baseball?

  • DHS

    A. Gonzalez goes the distance for the Spartans against SH for a 7-4 win. Gonzales cruised through 6.2 innings when a costly error extended the inning and provided SH with some life. D. Granados led the Spartans with a HR, while G. Lord, J. Chavez and J. Spohn provided additional bat support. Gonzalez looked great on the mound and the Spartan bats woke up. Great job boys!

  • reality

Mr. Robledo. The Tribunes lack of desire or will to control the disgusting running commentary is ruining my favorite blog. While I respect freedom of speech when a sports blog gets reduced to calling out family members and such it is no longer about sports is it? It is unfortunate that you or whomever is in charge has allowed this to go on seemingly unchecked. If there is nothing you can do about it I apologize but if you guys actually like this stuff and find it amusing then I shall take my leave.

  • CO

    Charter Oak beat Ayala 6-4

  • 1 trick pony

Fred, I 2nd what reality said about Bulldog1, his banter is old hat!

  • Fred Robledo

I agree with Reality, problem is I’m not on this blog 24-7, but when I read dialogue getting out of control, I delete comments, you have no idea how many I have to delete each week. And Bulldog, I erased most of your comments on this thread, you have to tone it down pal. You’re irritating the regulars.

  • playball

Fred, thanks and please delete the childish banter and personal attacks. Constructive criticism is fine but enough already with the personal attacks on these young athletes.

Baseball was made for kids, and grown-ups only screw it up. ~Bob Lemon

  • WCBBFan

    Fred I am not a Bulldog1 fan but I don’t think
that Reality was talking about Bulldog1.
I think it was the attack of Bulldog1 kids.
Bulldog1 is an idiot but he only picks on the
Parents that babble on about their poor kids
Who don’t play enough or weren’t vote for something.
I am not sure who is worse them or Bulls–t1

  • Bulldog1

Fred, I agree 100% with reality and Im glad you deleted my last comment as well as the cruel comment about my sons from Mario Mendoza, which I dont believe is his real name. I will keep it classy as always because thats just the Bulldog way.
I have never called out a single player by name in any way other than to compliment them. By the way Fred, I am also a regular Blogger and have been for years.
No hard feelings for deleting my last post and you, Reality and playball may still, Kiss the Ring.
By the way we will be battling the Roland Raiders today, so, wish us good luck!
    Bulldog fever.

  • playball

Bottom line – The SGV area is a hotbed of baseball talent and the comments on this blog should reflect a better respect for the game and student/athletes. Keep the “Raider Nation” type mentality and comments of this blog!

  • jmcdonough

    Fred
I dont know how you can put any blame on bulldog. I read the post last night; his kids were all but named and attacked personally on that thread.

  • Colt

Bullmutt, BACK to BACK to BACK to BACK!!!
