Girls Basketball: Bonita's big night ends in championship loss to Orange Lutheran, 59-42

Bonita High School hasn't had a good track record in championship games, losing divisional finals in baseball last spring, football in the fall, and girls water polo last week.
You can add the girls basketball team to that list too.
Bonita's first trip to a CIF-Southern Section Divisional girls basketball final ended with a 59-42 loss to Orange Lutheran in Wednesday's Division 3A final at the Anaheim Arena Convention Center, marred by foul trouble to Bearcats freshman sensation Nikki Wheatley, and despite a huge effort from Loyola Marymount-bound senior Taylor Anderson, who finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds. When Bonita beat Orange Lutheran 59-53 in the Nike Tournament of
Champions in Arizona in December, Lutheran didn't have senior guard Natalie
Luzar for most of the game because of an injury.
She was the difference-maker this time.
Luzar finished with a game-high 23 points as Lutheran (25-6) avenged
its earlier loss to Bonita (28-3) in front of 3,986 fans.
Luzar didn't waste any time either, helping Lutheran to a 16-8
first-quarter lead by hitting four-of-eight shots, which included two
3-pointers to set the tone.
"She made some unbelievable 3-point shots and some of those she was
far out," Bonita coach Darren Baumunk said of Luzar. "You can tell they were
looking to get her going."
After falling behind by nine points, the Bearcats started chipping
away, getting a 3-pointer from Madison Zylstra, a driving bucket from
Wheatley and 3-pointer from Anderson that trimmed the Lancers' lead to 20-18,
and they trailed just 24-21 at half thanks to Anderson's 10 points and seven
first-half rebounds.
Wheatley, who scored 26 points in the Bearcats' semifinal win over
Bishop Amat, scored just two points and sat on the bench for much of the
opening half with three fouls. She finished with 11 points and two assists.
After Anderson's putback and Wheatley's free throw, Bonita tied the
game at 28-28 midway through the third quarter, but Sydney Jacobs (12 points on five-for-five shooting) put the Lancers back in front with a 3-pointer followed by a Luzar steal and bucket to extend the lead back to 33-28.
With Anderson picking up her third foul late in the third, Wheatley
picked up her fourth foul on Luzar's 3-point bucket, which she converted at
the line for a four-point play to push the Lancers ahead 41-34. Then Abbey
Goodsell hit a 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer, giving the Lancers
their largest lead, 44-34 heading into the final eight minutes.
It snowballed from there, Luzar hitting another 3-pointer dagger in the fourth to extend it to 49-36 with 5:22 left.
"We weathered the storm early on and got it to three points at half," Baumnuk said. "But they got a four-point play in the third (quarter) and that was tough. Both of those two girls (Anderson and Wheatley) picked up fouls early and it kind of hurt us. We couldn't play as aggressive defensively as we would have liked, but give them credit, they played good and we knew we would have to play a good game, especially with Luzar tonight."
Bonita will likely earn an invite to next week's state playoffs, but
getting over a championship loss may take a while.
"I know these girls are upset," Baumunk said. "It's their first time
in the finals and a step in the right direction. Last year we got to the
semis and this time the finals. Maybe soon it will be our turn."

Bullpuppy - what has Lutheran won? What has Damien won? and the Bullpuppys need to be happy the better teams were moved out of their division or they might not have either. And weren't the WC girls were losers both times they face Bonita head to head

Bulldog, You need to get a life. From what I can tell you don't even have the "RING". I've had one for more than twenty years,I actually won 2 out of 3 years. After the 1st year I think I've worn it 10 times in my life. Any kid who is lucky enough to win one learns more from the journey than claiming the prize....Congrats to any kid that becomes a varsity athlete.

okay seriously. congrats on the football and wresting cif rings. we get that you have rings for those sports. we know that you win with "class and humility" and we should kiss the ring. we are truly really happy for you but when you come to talk about any other sports (basketball, water polo, soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball) west covina should have nothing to say. since this is girls basketball thread (noting that wc didn't make it out of the first round in girls basketball) you shouldn't come in here and dance around with your cif rings in football and wresting telling bonita to kiss your rings. that is just not classy. say something positive or dont say anything at all and when football and wresting come around again you can brag about your rings all you want. but for now just stop acting like a child and show some support for the sgv teams in cif playoffs that are representing you, your league, and area since west covina can't get even pass the second round in any of the sports listed above. thanks.

Oh well, contrary to what I've read in the SGV Tribune, overall records don't mean as much as a teams scheduled opposition, and the league they represent. That bein said, the girls bastetball season is not over. There are three teams that the SGV Tribne covers playing in the State D3 tourament next week, and ALL THREE have talent. I'm sure more exciting basketball awaits, just don't be in a rush (SGV Tribune) to describe these girls in superlatives until its all said and done.
Great Job Bonita Girls Basketball on an outstanding season. Agree with EVERYONE who said what a fine job you did. Just to get to the finals is an honor and shows your hard work and team spirit. Just think about how many teams/girls would have loved to be in your shoes! Once again, congrats and good luck in the future.

It is real funny that all of the negitive post on here are from people that support teams that did not do as well as Bonita did this year. Yes they did finish second in CIF, but first in leage. What the hell ever happened to sportsmanship? When a team wins, they do with sportsmenship and the same when they loose. It is funny how these kids can be good sports, but the adults that post all of the negitive post act like little kids. All of you jackasses need to grow up. Orange Lutheran played a heck of a game and has a great team. They were better on this night and deserved to win CIF. So, congratulations to OL on there CIF title and on the Bearcat ladies on a great season! Proud of all of you young ladies! As for all of you negitive posters, get a life and grow up!!

Do you represent all WC parents? Do you have a ring of your own or are you one of those never was who is living through the success of your kids due to your spouses genes? Now that Mrs. Reynolds outed you on this blog I think I'm going to take the afternoon off when WC baseball pays a visit to Bonita this season. Your probably that baseball dad who is questioning every pitch during the game so I'm sure you'll be easy to pick out.
P.S. It's a good thing CO got bumped up this year because you would have been our playoff hoe again.

so what if we lost CIF championship just think of it as an opportuninty that you
girls made it this far. And you still have a chance at the State championship to

Ladies, you had a great season, like football, water polo (girls and boys), soccer (girls and boys) basketball (boys and girls) and girls volleyball did. No other school in the valley has had as good of a year in sports, all around! Congratulations! The most important thing is, how every one of the sports finished with class. That says a lot for your parents, coaches and most important on how great of kids you all are! Again, Congratulations on a hell of a season and keep your heads up!
