Former Amat great Jonathan Cornell hoping to realize NFL dream at next months draft

Jonathan Cornell never has doubted what path his football career would take after graduating from Bishop Amat High School in 2006. It’s basically been NFL or bust.
Fresh off four seasons in the SEC as a middle linebacker at Ole Miss, Cornell is ready to make his vision a realization in next month’s NFL draft.

Track: Covina’s Remontay McClain hoping to duplicate state titles in 100 and 200 meters

High School State Leaders on Dyestat

By Steve Ramirez, Staff Writer
Remontay McClain made history last year, and the Covina High School senior, who scored a rare double in winning the 100- and 200- meter runs at the CIF State track and field championships, plans on making more this season. “I think he’s naturally motivated,” Covina coach Kevin Glaspy said. “He understands that winning last year did not come easy. If anything, he’s even more hungry this year and works as hard as anyone. “We’ve had talks about it, and he wants to do it again. He’s up for the challenge.”

With spring here (sort of), Aram takes a look at how football teams are getting prepared for 2011

Don’t expect Baldwin Park High School football coach James Heggins to back off his audacious offseason plans for his team this spring. The Braves, who last season did everything from typical weight-room workouts to playing under the lights on Friday nights in May, will be back at it again shortly. Baldwin Park has lined up two dates in late April and early May to play Walnut in 11-on-11 action in a home-and-home arrangement.

Softball: South Hills beats Ayala 7-6 and Charter Oak pounds Claremont, 12-5; Pitching not as dominant as it once was

Look at the high-scoring games above, that’s how it’s been this year. How much has moving the rubber from 40 to 43 feet changed the game? I can’t recall ever seeing so many softball boxscores that look like baseball boxscores. In a quick unscientific look at MaxPreps, the 20th ranked strikeout leader in the Southern Section last year finished with 223 strikeouts. This year No. 20 is at 53 strikeouts. In previous years I get texts all the time about so and so throwing a no-hitter or striking out 14, 15, 16 batters in a game. This year, not one text like that. While pitching is still the most important position, you can tell that hitters have a more even playing field now, and your defense needs to be much more accountable. You can’t rely on a dominant pitcher like previous years, you have to make plays now…I don’t know about you, but I like it.
