There was no doubt about which team set their alarm clock for the 10 o’clock game of the Apache Invitational tournament. The game was a matchup between Glendora High School, the defending CIF-Southern Section Division II champions and ranked third by this newspaper, knocked off Bonita, currently ranked first in CIF Division III and ranked second by this newspaper.
The Tartans hit a pair of solo home runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 10-0 win over the Bearcats.

The win gives the Tartans (8-3-1) a 1-0-1 record in pool play while the Bearcats (10-3) dropped to 1-1. “You have to give Glendora a lot of credit,” Bearcats coach John Knott said. “They were ready to go and those two solo home runs pretty much set the tempo. It was a pretty impressive showing from those guys.”
Senior Nick Cooksey hit a one out home run over the right center field fence to start the scoring for the Tartans. Catcher Brennan Salgado then hit a drive over the right field fence that might have gone out of Dodger stadium.
That was enough for senior Sean Beckman who pitched a 3-hit shutout and improved his record to 4-1.
“It was a good win,” Beckman said. “We came out hard and pitched well and hit well. (Bonita’s)K.C. Huth had a little ground ball up the middle and then there was one hit hard to right but my catcher, Brennan Salgado, and I worked our spots and got the outs by making them roll over and get out in front. This is definitely one of my better of games of this year.”
Huth had two infield singles and Mark Lindsay had the other hit for the Bearcats.
“I knew, coming in, we needed some extra focus,” Tartans coach Dan Henley said. “I was really proud of our kids today because we played all facets of the game well. At 10 in the morning, it’s a tournament game and you never know what you’re going to get.”
One of the most focused Tartans was designated hitter Bill Regis.
Regis, whose brother is currently starting at UCLA and was a 2009 Glendora graduate, was three for four at the plate and knocked in five runs to lead the Tartans.
His 3-run home run in the bottom of the 6th ended the game due to the 10-run rule.
“That was one of our best games of the year,” Regis said. “And for me, it was probably my best. That last pitch was a fast ball a little middle-in. I just had the mentality to get my foot down today. I wasn’t thinking as much as I usually do at the plate and just played the game as it went. Not thinking is probably what got my brother into UCLA.”
The Tartans will play Temple City at 1p.m. today and Bonita will face San Dimas at 10 a.m. in the final round of pool play. Both games are at Arcadia High School.
“We have to learn from this,” Knott said. “It’s one of the great things about tournaments. It doesn’t give you too much time to dwell on it, you have to get back out there.
