Baseball: McCreery struck out six in two innings in front of dozens of scouts

Bonita pitcher Adam McCreery made his much-anticipated season debut last Saturday against Cabrillo and did not disappoint the estimated 30 scouts watching the 6-foot-8 left-hander throw for the first time because of an elbow strain that's kept him sidelined the entire year.

McCreery struck out six, walked two and gave up a hit in two innings in Bonita's 20-0 victory over Long Beach Cabrillo in the Centennial tourney.

"They had 87-89 miles per hour, one guy had him touching 90," Bonita coach John Knott said. "We were pretty happy. He wasn't trying to overthrow. It would have been real easy for him having not thrown in a while to get caught up seeing that many (radar) guns, but I thought he did a good job just staying within himself."

McCreery, headed for Arizona State, will throw a bullpen session later this week and get more game action when Bonita hosts Vista Del Lago on Saturday at 11 a.m.

"We'll see how he feels for Saturday," Knott said. "We're pretty much day-to-day with him. I definitely want to stretch him out, but I don't have a timetable as to when. His arm is going to be the one telling us where he's at.

"If he's feeling strong, we'll stretch him out further by an inning or two each week. If he's not, then we'll just stay with what he's been doing."
