Today: We’ve got today and a week left of baseball and softball until playoffs. The most intriguing on the schedule this afternoon is West Covina softball at Bonita for first in the Hacienda, which is where we will be.

Thursday’s Sierra League Baseball: Damien beat Ayala 8-6 behind senior Griffin Lord and sophomore Chad Hawkins, who each had two hits and two RBIs for the Spartans (13-11, 8-5) over Ayala (10-12, 2-11). Chino Hills’ Ameron Pongs hit a grand slam with two outs in a five-run seventh that helped the Huskies beat Charter Oak 7-6, and also keep Chino Hills (15-8, 10-3) tied for first with South Hills (18-4, 10-3), an 8-0 winner over Claremont. Charter Oak’s (10-11, 6-7) collapse in the seventh means it will not make the playoffs.

Thursday’s Sierra League Softball update: Chino Hills beat Charter Oak 9-7 and South Hills beat Claremont 10-7, giving Chino Hills (19-5, 10-2) a half game lead over South Hills (16-6, 10-3) with one week left. In the battle for sole possession of third, Ayala clipped St. Lucy’s 6-5. Ayala is 10-11 and 7-6 while St. Lucy’s dropped to 11-12 and 6-7.

Thursday’s Baseline League softball: Glendora lost its fourth straight and it wasn’t pretty, losing 18-4 to Rancho Cucamonga to effectively end its playoff chances.
