Softball player of the year chase wide open as well as 12 Tribune first-team spots

In all my years covering softball, I can’t think of an all-area team where a pitcher wasn’t player of the year. Last year it was Bonita’s Chloe Wurst, year before that Glendora’s Dana Waldusky, before that Los Altos’ Diana Lynn-Patterson, and so forth.
In four years at the Star-News, a pitcher won every year too, mainly because pitchers, who can pitch every game, have an unbelievable impact on the success of a team. Although still true, pitchers are not nearly as dominant, which has opened the player of the year discussion to several outside the circle.
You can agree or disagree, but the player of the year chase could be anyone with playoffs having a big impact on final decisions. But to this point, if you were filling out first team all-area, 12 spots and a coach, how would it look?

    hssv,
ok i get it your a Chino Hills parent, why dont you nominate the whole team give me a break. some of those girls aren’t even the best at their possition on their team let alone the valley.

  • CO FAN

Ken Carlson is an outstanding coach and you cry baby Bonita parents need to shut up before you run him off. You might get some jerk like the last coach you had, remember him?

  • nominating

I would have a hard time nominating multiple players from Charter Oak based on their league record(3-10). If they had such impact players, I think their league record would be better. I would also be mindful when nominating anyone from SD. It’s bad enough that their league is a cake walk, but a couple days ago they played a non-league game with Chaffey HS. Why? They won 24-10. They had 24 “hits” and 17 “RBIs”. Great pad the stats game.

  • CO FAN

    Nominating,

it shouldnt matter what place your in if you are hitting damn near 500 in the sierra league your worthy of all of these awards……

  • nominating

    CO FAN
You are throwing in 3 players from a next to last team for the best in valley? Maybe defensive skills are suspect?? You mention batting .500, is that against the Sierra League pitching or overall?

  • CO FAN

    Nominating,

no, i mean in your pressious sierra league. Take a look at max preps and see for yourself…

  • Intheknow

    Nominating,
I don’t understand your position on what a player’s stats are against certain teams or leagues. Should players bat from the opposite side of the plate or not try as hard against lesser opponants? As inane as that sounds, it’s just as nonsensical as your point. The players being mentiioned here who are having terrific seasons don’t need to be torn down by you because they don’t play high caliber teams everyday. I believe every player mentioned on this blog are going on to college to further thier careers. Do you think the collegethey were recruited from was really worried about their high school stats? They work hard every game so give them credit where credit is due.

  • hssb

SGV Softball Dad. Using your logic, you must be a Bonita parent. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and very few have seen all the players on all the teams play. Have a little class and celebrate the great performances of all the athletes instead of speaking negatively about some.

I agree with “nominated” that while there are some good performances on all the teams, the teams at the top of their leagues are there because they have several impact players leading the way. I simply gave my opinion based upon the teams/players I have seen. I haven’t seen Amat, so I can’t comment.

There are clearly more than 12 that deserve to be recognized. Off the top of my head, Lexi Robles (South Hills), Garie Blando & Paige Gumz (Chino Hills), Padilla & Gonzalez (Amat-from what I hear), etc.

Fortunately, we don’t have the tough job of selecting only 12. How about we just be happy for the players that are nominated and those that are selected!

  • Sierraleagueparent

All I gotta say is that CO would be in way worse shape if it wasn’t for some of the players they do have and they do deserve some recognition. My daughter played them this year and if it wasn’t for some dumb coaching moves (Definitely not coaches of the year) they could have won. That freshman pitcher they have, sorry I don’t remember her name, without her they would have been in big trouble this year. Did anyone see the season Cassie Andrews had? I don’t think CO would have won a game if they just had her. And Nicki Sprague was on base all the time, we could not find a way to get her out. The point is my daughters team does have a winning record and i’m not nominating everyone for first team honors. The recognition is for each girl’s achievements this year not the teams.

  • SoftballMom

I’m not sure how Anissa Sanchez is getting Pitcher of the Year accolades when she has ONE pitch! Just wait until next year, when Gano is gone and Bonita has less than stellar defense (oh, unless of course the Bonita coach can get his Team Smith players – like Sanchez, to come play for him, even though they lives out of district!)

A fastball doesn’t get any pitcher very far…

  • really??

CO FAN, never said anything negative about her. i just dont think anyone has ever made the tribune team TWICE in the same year for different positions. come on now. be real. so lets make gano player of the year AND infield selection…now SHE’s all that and more.

  • CO FAN

    Really???

Hands down Britney is a better player, Gano make’s way to many errors for a “SUPER STAR”. and those are just the ones that are reported…I saw her in a game last year with her old team make 5 errors against us and they reported 1. So dont believe all the hype. She is a very good player but dont get carried away….Washington wont be padding her stats….

  • really??

CO FAN, no need to bash. we both have different opinions thats all. i dont believe rodrigues is a SUPERSTAR if thats what your saying but i wont get into why. gano, hands down, player of the year. rodrigues as 1st team catcher is fine.

  • Get Real

Some of these selections are out in left field. The criteria for such an honor are based on what? Amat is ranked number 1 in the SGV and D3 with arguably the coach of the year. Yet no players from Amat are mention. Okay, if rank doesn’t mean anything or winning league, lets take St. Lucy’s O’tool. That kid is as good if not better than any of the pitcher/players mention below, and where is she mention? Get real people.

  • fuzzymath

    Get real

First off Amat is no longer ranked #1 in division 3

Second the selections are based on how well these players performed during the current season.

Third stop tooting your own horn its obvious nobody in the valley but you and Fred believe Amat should be #1.

  • just saying

Really, no one said she should get it twice. Its just a nomination. Get a grip. So you mean to tell me that Hssb is ok with nominating Gano twice. Come on! Its a thought and an oppion Exactly.

We would like to nominate the SL coaches for “coaches of the year” because they let our daughter start and are so nice to her.

  • fools gold

I would not put anyone from the Valle Vista League on my list. Batting in the .400′s in that league is no accomplishment. Where are the SD players going to school? If they are that good, I am guessing they are going to D1 programs, look at the company you have grouped them with.

  • SGV Softball Dad

    And 1,

I agree with everything except your last outfield spot. Nikki Sprague has better stats and played in the sierra league. She played the outfield all year. Alena started at SS then moved to outfield. Just need to switch those 2…??

I have been to every Bonita game this year.. Out of 103 balls hit to Gano she has made only TWO errors, one being a throwing error..

Hands down Gano deserves POY. look at her stats.. her BA is .620. what is Natalie Sanchez hitting? no comparison.. and rodriguez compared to gano? come on you’ve got to be kidding!

  • sgv

    get real
I don’t believe your going to get very many votes on this board no one here knows of amat with the exception of northview and we both know how that went. If you want recognition in the valley you might want to talk to your coach and play at least one local tournament next year. All the top teams in here including some others that aren’t in here would give Amat fits I for one believe you would lose more
    then you would win.

  • teamplayer

    Wow:

It takes a lot more than a batting average to be mvp. How about loyalty to your school???

  • teamplayer

    Wow:

Come on you got to be kidding???? Gano over Rodriguez…..That’s like saying Washington over Power house UCLA!!! Now that’s a joke!!!!

  • Big Fish

sgv-No one knows of Amat? Tell your coach to schedule a local tournament? WHY? You base your whole arguement on the fact that northview made a game out of their meeting, so what! I’m sure any team that Amat plays would try their best to make a game out of it. Bottomline….SCOREBOARD! Why don’t you request that your school’s coach go beat down the Amat door and schedule a game with Amat? Because they probably won’t. Why do you ass*u*me that Amat didn’t want to play your school? The only reason Amat would not want to play in a local tournament is because they are in a better tournament against better teams some where else. It is usually of no benefit to Amat to play local teams as Amat is usually the only “Top Team” on their schedule. Anyone can play a good team once and possibly win. Try consistently playing good teams and winning….it’s a lot harder than you will probably ever know because you just*won’t*do*it!

  • reality

teamplayer is on drugs man, no joke. gano comes into a school and hits .620 and plays her butt off defensively and thats not LOYALTY? why? cuz she had NO CHOICE but to move? Would YOU have ur kid drive on the 210 to the 57S to the 60W to go to LA during rush hour traffic both ways during RUSH HOUR?? Come on ur a teamplayer no?? ARE YOU INSANE?? And there is just NO COMPARISON between gano and Rodriguez gano will be on the field at 3rd or SS or maybe 2nd at WEAK Washington while rodriguz will be keeping her fingers crossed she steps on the dirt at POWERHOUSE UCLA. Now thats a FACT!

  • Come On!

People please, its just some nominations. Reality IS they are both Great players. It is obvious that there are Gano fans and Rodriguez fans. Gano is the Senior this year let her have the glory Rodriguez is still a Junior no need to fight over it. Both are great in diffrent ways CAN NOT compare. Rodriguez is a catcher and plys the corners Gano is a middle infielder. Night and day. Both are going to top D1 schools and Pac10.I think that is an accomplisment enough and BIGGER than any award here. Let these girls enjoy it.

  • ????

Reality, Ucla power house over Washington anyday. Thats a FACT!

Your on crack little fella this isn’t football the sgv has been dominate in softball for awhile now.

glendora: quarter finals, semi finals last 4years
San Dimas: semi finals, finals almost every year
Bonita: Semi finals last year lost 1-0 to Ayala(state champions).

Ayala:State champions highest team ranked 6th nationally
chino hills: semis almost every year
    charter oak: quarters and semis
    west covina: quarters and semis:
    pomona catholic: semis,final,champions

The list goes on I’m sure I forgot somebody your smoking some funky sh-t dude the sgv is legit and in some sports better then the rest………….
come in play with the big girls even oc varsity knows whats up!

  • Get Real

I don’t doubt that some SGV teams will give Amat fits as in the case of Northview. But like all good teams do they find a way to win those games. Color the win any color you like. Playing top D1 teams that are ranked by CIF-SS speaks for itself. When do you ever hear about D1 rank teams coming over to the SGV to gauge where they stand? The SGV doesn’t have that reputation and that’s not to say that the SGV doesn’t have good teams, they do, but it’s not the top of the food chain.

  • hssb

I agree with Come On! Some of you have completely lost your mind. This is supposed to be about the girls and honoring their accomplishments. Instead, some of you are making it about you and your egos. There is simply no reason to speak negatively about any girl.

Why not just focus on the positve? These girls give 100% every time they step on the field, and many are going on to play in college and get their education paid for. Does it really matter whether they will play in the Pac 10, or the SEC, or the Big 10, or which Pac 10 team they play on? No it does not, and it should not.

We are talking about HIGH SCHOOL accomplishments THIS year. And to bash a kid because she had to move with her family to a new area, which resulted in her having to go to a new high school…that is the epitome of ridiculous.

Grow up people! You are supposed to be adults, yet the children have more class. Most of them are friends or travel ball teammates, and support each other regardless of which high school team they are on.

  • Letcifdecide

Lets put this baby to rest the POY odds look like this.

Courtney Gano: 4/5 favorite to win it
Courtney has had an amazing year both in the box and at short. I’m not sure how her circus plays at short have gone unnoticed by some(remember the charter oak tournament).

Natalie Sanchez: 8/5 second choice in the running shes had a great year on the bump and at the plate. How far they go in CIF will tell the story.

Anissa Sandchez: 2-1 Is the freshmen really this good? or just surrounded by a really good defensive. Shes done it so far in the Hacienda but CIF is lurking.

Brittney Rodriguez: 3-1 With no stats posted but we all know she can hit with the best of them, probably has more true power then most and what she was probably recruited for.Her defensive has always been the question is she really the best catcher in the valley?

Stephany LaRossa: 5-1 The kid has been this good since she was 13 years old and probably should have won this prestigious award two years ago when she hit over .600 in what was once the mighty sierra league.

Nikki Innamorato: 5-1 Not her best year in the numbers department but she lead her team to the semis last season and has chance to lead them all the way to the ship this year and vault her way to greatness like other Sierra league pitchers before her.

Sam Nieves: 10-1 Going to the deep south to play at the next level she always steps up in big games and has been consistent on both ends of the field for all four years. Sam has the ability to hit to all fields and does the little things that sometimes go un noticed.

Breeanna Sandoval: 10-1 A four year starter for the Bearcats and like Sam she is going to a small D1 to finish her softball career. Known best for her great catches in the outfield she’s also having a career best hitting 3rd in the line up.

Liz Rubalcava: 15-1 She has more hits then LaRosa and probably a big reason why Diamond Bar is even in the hunt for a league title kudos to the junior for a breakout season.

Taylor Castro: 15-1 After tranffering from St. Lucy’s last year she’s made a tremendous impact for West Covina everyone knows WC for Dekota’s big bat and heart in the circle but Castro has been hitting over .500 all year and holds down the hot corner.

Mercedes Cundiff: 15-1 I don’t care what anybody says 45 hit this year and I believe is a four year varsity starter. Like LaRosa she is a great player who has been plagued by being on horrible teams.

Courtney Hine: 15-1 Courtney has a cannon for an arm and will finish her senior season as her best. Plagued by injuries her junior year has definitely made amends this year. She has fallen through the cracks of the Valley Vista and yes she can hit any pitchers outside of the Valley Vista.

Nicki Sprague: 15-1 Can anyone say lead off hitter. I’m sure its been disappointing for Charter Oak not making the play-offs but this one deserves mentioning. Shes an exciting player to watch and no matter who their playing this one finds away to make a defining impact.

  • Big Fish

sgv – Please see “Get Real’s” post below. Now ask yourself the question….

“When do you ever hear about D1 rank teams coming over to the SGV to gauge where they stand?”

  • sgv

    Big Fish,
Your food chain needs an overhaul as evident in the D1 champion and runner up losing to D4 schools last season.
The D2 Champion Upland, local team
The D3 Champion Ayala, local team and funny how they get the state number #1 ranking and best national ranking over all those top D1 teams lol top of the food chain huh!

  • Cheese me

    Amat

  • Amat Dad

Well Fred you really stirred it up this time, being as we only saw Northview and Covina from the SGV this year I’m really not qualified to give you an all SGV team other than the ladies at AMAT who I saw all year. I’ve read many an article of the girls who have received the press but still not enough to make up a list. It’s hard to argue with what Sanchez has done in the circle this year and having arguably the best defensive catcher in the valley in Jackie Carlin certainly helped. !st baseman Lexi Gonzalez came through in clutch situations all season long and deserves mention as does Victoria Saucedo at 2ND. I haven’t heard one mention of Cassie Padilla the SS all she did was hit .535 against some very good teams that Amat played all year long. Our cf and leadoff Alma Cortez was steady year long and chased down anything remotely close to her and her speed caused problems for any catcher Amat faced. Can’t see any of this happening though without the support of the coaches who dedicated themselves to this program. After reading the negative comments about high school coaches on this blog site I must say that our softball program is in good hands.

  • Big Fish

sgv – TWO teams? You come back at me with TWO TEAMS for your proof of sgv dominance? AND you have the lack of knowledge to do it with TWO TEAMS FROM S.B. County! You just made my point (at least with you)!

  • Mama Bear

@sierraleagueparent – MY daughter may have not had the best season…but CO is loaded with talent and Brooke had a great year. Guess thats why its called a TEAM….and theres more than one way to help your TEAM…and MY daughter did with her bat.

  • sgv

    Big fish or little guppy
    I believe your question was>
“When do you ever hear about D1 rank teams coming over to the SGV to gauge where they stand?”

Both these teams play in the fish bowl every year and they happen to be defending champions! The sgv brings better then just ordinary d1 schools they bring champions huh state champions. Now go away, you lose, egg on your face potato head.

  • Big Fish

sgv – First, it wasn’t my question. Two it was asking when do other “D1″ teams come to the SGV to gauge themselves? I take that to mean when do other top ranked programs come to the SGV to gauge themselves (unless you can tell me who is in D1?). You came back with TWO (2) teams! Pretty sorry overall and I was waiting for your laundry list of Top Ranked teams that seek out SGV schools to measure where they stand at any given time? Still waiting.

Great job Tayler! Good to see your name tossed around for All-Tribune, good luck on that! We could have used your bat this year at SL, but most of all, the girls miss your laugh. I’m glad you are playing for a coach that is a winner and wants to win, but most of all, believes in you. Good luck against Diamond Bar and in CIF.

So here is my updated list of candidates based upon the end of league play. Again, just my opinion. Best of luck to all the girls nominated!

Still really undecided on Coach of the Year. Still think Gano is the undisputed POY. Pitchers: Sanchez, Innamorato, & O’toole have led their teams all year. Catcher: Rodriguez has come up big for her team, but so has Gumz. Infielders: Still think Gano, La Rosa, & Girard are the best all-around infielders, but Nieves, Blando, Padilla, and Valdez have had an outstanding year & contributed huge to their teams too. Outfielders: Still think Sandoval is the best all-around outfielder, but again Sprague and Hine have had outstanding years & have been standouts for their teams. Utility: Still think Parks is the truest utility player, playing both outfield and pitching, but Castro & Gonzales have been fabulous too.

Coach of the Year: Jesse Mendez (Bishop Amat) or Mike Southworth (Chino Hills)
Player of the Year: Courtney Gano (Bonita/Washington) BA 622, 23 RBI
Pitcher: Anissa Sanchez (Bonita) 1.32 era , 94 Ks, 20-4
Pitcher: Nikki Innamorato (Chino Hills/San Luis Obispo) 1.75 era , 111 Ks, 15-5
Pitcher: Danielle OToole (St. Lucys/San Diego State) 2.48 era , 114 Ks, 10-9
Catcher: Britney Rodriguez (South Hills/UCLA) BA 442, 20 RBIs (stats only updated thru 4/19/11)
Catcher: Paige Gumz (Chino Hills/Fresno State) BA 424, 14 RBIs
Infielder: Stephany LaRosa (Diamond Bar/UCLA) BA 500, 25 RBIs
Infielder: Nikki Girard (Chino Hills/Arizona State) BA 400, 23 RBIs
Infielder: Sam Nieves (South Hills/Middle Tennesse) BA 508, 10 RBIs (stats only updated thru 4/19/11)
Infielder: Garie Blando (Chino Hills/UNLV) BA 440, 23 RBIs
Infielder: Cassie Padilla (Bishop Amat) BA 535, 26 RBIs
Infielder: Sam Valdez (Charter Oak) BA 500, 28 RBIs
Outfielder: Nikki Sprague (Charter Oak) BA 465, 17 RBIs
Outfielder: Breanna Sandoval (Bonita/Cal State Bakersfield) BA 513, 27 RBIs
Outfielder: Courtney Hine (San Dimas) BA 495, 28 RBIs
Utility: Taylor Castro (West Covina) BA 544, 16 RBIs
Utility: Alexis Gonzales (Bishop Amat/Oregon State) BA 372, 32 RBIs
Utility: Patricia Parks (Chino Hills) BA 394, 23 RBIs, 2.09 ERA, 43Ks

    SoftballMom,

Even I know that a fastball is the most important pitch in anyone’s aresenal. Obviously the girl has some good velocity and command. To top it off, if that fastball dances a little bit, then watch out!

“A fastball doesn’t get any pitcher very far…”

That should be restated. Without a fastball, a pitcher gets nowhere. Even those pitchers with fancy change ups NEED to have a reliable fastball

softballmom aka Lynda Alright does need a life. Why she is even commenting on a player in this league is beyond me. Her daughter plays in Pasadena.

Valadez and Padilla have made too many errors. If you are voting on hitters they are in. But as infielder’s? No way. Not everyone see’s all games against all teams so try not to comment on the few you have seen. Errors also aren’t always scored as much by the home coaches.

  • errors should matter

Against St. Lucy’s, Valadez had an error in all three games, some that resulted in runs. O’toole also kept her to 2 for 11 hitting.

  • crazyseason

Its hard not to place Danielle O’toole from SL into the mix for pitcher of the year. She has come back from an arm injury and has shut out big teams and now leads the Sierra league in strike outs. If you look at the numbers on max preps it’s very interesting. “Runs for” and “runs against”. SL has only put up 82 runs, that’s 26 below the lowest team and 100 behind CH. And the runs against is only 92……which is 2nd behind CH. Its pretty darn good that there in 3rd in the tough Sierra league with only 82 RF. If you compared apples to apples, she is arguably the best pitcher in the valley.

  • SH has stats!

South Hills has stats up, now we get a total picture of the league. Sam and BRod are 2 and 3, no surprise. Charter Oak by the numbers, hit pretty good but did not translate to wins. Wow Lucys, you own 5 of the bottom 6 batting average spots. No wonder they have only scored 82 runs. Only 3 batters are over .350. Chino Hills’ line-up is probably the most consistant from top to bottom.

  • CO

SH has stats, not sure what your looking at But Valdez and Sprague are 1 and 2 get used to it…

  • since you are bringing this up….

CO, go to maxpreps and go to the first SL/CO game. Maxpreps has Valadez as only having 2 at bats, she had three. 1st at bat, ground out to SS, 2nd at bat pop up to 1st, and finally in her 3rd at bat, a base hit. It was only recently that it was changed from 3 to 2 at bats. She batted .333 not .500 for the game. I only suspect that this was done in order to give her the season average of .500. I would suggest that other teams check their books to see if there are other manipulations. In other SL/CO games Brooke twice sac bunted into an FC where the pitcher fielded the ball and got the lead runner at second. Both times CO scored Brooke with hits. I’m guessing your stats are way off. It would only explain how on paper it seems that you hit the crap out of the ball, but only placed 5th in league.

  • CO

Dont hate,at least we turn our stats in.. should be an interesting all league meeting for your coach, good luck….

  • actually

SH HAS been keeping official stats all season… like baseball on gamechanger. which is pretty cool cuz like college gametracker fans/parents can follow each game while at work play by play & the system automatically keeps stats for each plyer. and if u dont want to watch on computer u can have sys text you – updates on what only ur kid does, score updates, etc. any1 can see final scores but u have to be a paid fan to see indiv stats (like $10) these stats can then be sent/uploaded to maxpreps because somehow maxpreps and gamechanger are connected. which what it seems SH decided to do at the end of the season.

  • All League Honors

All league honor numbers are set by league placement. They normally go like this:

    1st place team: 4 to 6 players
    2nd place team: 4 to 6 players
    3rd place team: 3 to 5 players
    4th place team: 1 to 3 players
    5th place team: 1 to 2 players
    6th place team: 1 to 2 players

  • wow

a freshmen on Glendora hit 8 homeruns? and I think has the best batting average on the team. Too bad they don’t post stats on MaxPreps.

  • seriously!

Who really cares what you all have to say about these girls in the end your votes and shameless comments don’t even matter! Here we have a bunch of whining parents on here behaving like a bunch of dumb kids making comments about a bunch of girls who work there butts off on and off the field trying to improve their game just to keep their parents happy. While most of you stand there for 7 innings critiquing every bad hit, pitch or fielding mistake these kids make. Parents are standing on the side lines making comments towards other players not thinking or caring if any of the players on the field or bench can hear you. Nobodys super stars on any of these teams are untouchable with rights to all MVP awards so get over it. For all you who keep your own posted stats just to try and bring these kids down get a life. There is nothing you can do about whats on paper no matter what you think is right or wrong just keep your fingers crossed that your kid brings all the awards that you want on your mantel at the end of the season

    To all you awesome girls:
Love it, experience it, and when you step on the field just do what you do best for you and only you

  • OMG

    Seriously,

Stop your crying just because your kid isn’t getting any awards. Maybe next year…..

  • seriously

    OMG-
You must be one of St. lucy’s classy parents
