Former locals push UCI into Super Regionals

UC Irvine players celebrate at rallying for a 4-3 victory over host UCLA in the NCAA Division I regionals. The Anteaters advanced to face No. 1 Virginia in next weekend’s Super Regionals.

Sunday was a big day for former local baseball players Jordan Leyland, of San Dimas, and Tommy Reyes, of Bishop Amat. Both helped UC Irvine rally for a 4-3 victory over UCLA to advance to next weekend’s NCAA Division I Super Regionals, facing No. 1 national seed Virginia.
Leyland and Reyes went 2 for 4, with Leyland knocking in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth with double. UCI rallied to score two runs in its last at-bat to win 4-3. Reyes had an infield single in the rally.
UCLA’s Jeff Gelalich, of Bonita, went 1 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs.
It was also a good day for former Glendora standout Adam Plutko, who gave up just one hit in 7 2/3 innings as UCLA advanced to face the Anteaters with a 4-1 victory over San Francisco earlier in the day.
